So, what am I saying: the desire to buy a motorcycle usually comes when there is the least money in your pocket for it. Looking through the latest offers, you become stronger in the idea that “a motorcycle is always expensive, but a good motorcycle is even more expensive,” you believe the statements that “a normal bike doesn’t cost less than a million,” and you put off the purchase “for later.” And so, the beginning of the motorcycle season comes, when everyone around you is on two wheels, and you are standing on the sidewalk and desperately holding a “poker face”, because once again you “can’t afford” a normal motorcycle. It's a shame? Yes! But it’s even more offensive to find out that somewhere at this very moment good motorcycles costing less than 150,000 rubles are waiting for their buyer!
What can you afford for 150 thousand
Let me clarify right away: you can only get a normal bike at such a tempting price if you follow additional recommendations. Before we take a closer look at the what-where-when, I’ll say a few words about mileage. This topic has already been discussed in detail in the article “Is high mileage really that bad for a motorcycle” - read it, if in doubt, then we’ll discuss it in the comments. Briefly, I can justify it this way: motorcycles with a mileage of 40 thousand km are very difficult to sell because most people perceive the kilometers traveled differently - for a car and for two wheels. At the same time, the same people calmly buy a used car for 100K, not considering it a hopeless waste of money. I’ll tell you a secret: most good motorcycles, just like cars, have a service life exceeding 200 and 300 thousand, and a ridiculous 60–70 thousand km - with good service, this is not even a third of it!
What are you getting
Alas, miracles don’t happen and you won’t be offered a new motorcycle so cheaply (well, maybe a children’s Chinese moped, but now we’re talking about more serious things). For this price, it would be a used, but not requiring capital investment, 15-20 year old bike. Slightly worn, possibly previously repaired (suspension and exterior), possibly with light or medium tuning. Motorcycles that are damaged or show signs of wear and tear usually sell for much less, so they do not fall into this category. Although in general, any small defects or changes will play into your hands during the auction.
Where to look for a good bike
Experience shows that for a properly serviced, not “killed” motorcycle that has no problems with docks, you most often have to go to the regions. In Moscow, St. Petersburg and other large cities, a bike “psychologically” cannot cost less than a certain amount, even if it is “junk,” but as soon as you move away from the center, the prices become reasonable.
When to take a motorcycle
In the off-season. Prices fall especially pleasantly in November-December, when many novice motorcyclists are faced with the question of storing a two-wheeler. Some are trying to save money by not renting a box or spending money on conservation, others are naively planning to save up over the winter, and in the spring get something larger or from a different class. In any case, you need to buy a bike at the best price at the end of the season. Yes, the downside is that it is unlikely that you will be able to drive it under your own power (depending on the weather), but the benefits will still be higher than the costs of transportation.
How much does it cost to own a motorcycle?
And now we are not talking about the price of a specific model. Even absolutely sane people, when determining which motorcycle is best to buy for a beginner, forget that money for the purchase is not the last item of expenditure. When planning to join the motorcycle fraternity, you need to remember that you will also need money for:
- Training at a motorcycle school and obtaining a license
- Regular motorcycle maintenance (the more fashionable and modern the motorcycle, the more expensive)
- Proper storage and seasonal canning (if climatic conditions require it)
- Periodic registration of insurance
- Purchasing quality equipment
None of these points should be ignored or tried to save too much!
Yes, a normal helmet or jacket costs from 9,000-11,000 rubles each, and obtaining a category “A” driver’s license in Moscow will cost 15,000 rubles or even more. But a one-time fine for driving without a license costs 8,000-16,000 rubles, and 2,000 rubles. cast for just one finger.
Not always, but many require additional expenses:
- Protective bars (sliders) that will protect the rider and reduce the cost of repairs after a fall (and you will fall, believe me, bruises, contusions and more serious injuries for those who have been in the saddle for many years)
- Lighting equipment and mirrors - not only budget, but also expensive models cannot always boast of the ideality of these design elements, plus, we remember about personal anthropometry
- Cases and trunks - if you need to carry something, but the standard equipment is insufficient
- Secure parking – not everyone has their own garage and a space in the official parking lot
Attention Muscovites and guests!
Parking of two-wheeled motor vehicles in city paid parking lots is free. But this does not mean that you will not have to pay for violating traffic rules regarding placing a motorcycle in a temporary parking lot! And leaving a motorcycle for a long time somewhere in the yard unattended is not a good idea.
Good resource motorcycles costing less than RUR 150,000
This is my personal “rating”, not associated with any “top 10” (or top recommendations of trading platforms), in which popular “Japanese” are the leaders among the contenders. Seriously, if you need a good motorcycle from the “maximum rides – minimum money for repairs” category, choose one of the representatives of the “Big Four”: Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki. They make it possible to implement the same principle: “to be, not to appear” - they are quite legendary, powerful enough, capable of giving several more years (even decades) of pleasant operation.
For bad roads
- Honda VFR1200X Crosstourer . A sophisticated and powerful SUV designed on the basis of the VFR1200F sports tourer. It doesn't handle dirt roads very well, but it goes well on bad asphalt. It’s reliable, looks nice, drives very, very cheerfully – its sporting roots show through.
- Yamaha XT1200Z Super Tenere . A tall and rather heavy bike. It stands out from its competitors due to its combination of relatively low price (1.3 million for a new one) and rich technical equipment. In its price category, it can perhaps be called the best.
- BMW R1250GS . The famous “Goose”, which cannot be included in the top touring motorcycles! Not cheap, but worth every ruble paid for it. The GS series is incredibly popular, and if you can't afford a new bike, you can look at used options, such as the R1200GS or even the old R1150GS. Among the features is a boxer engine with tractor traction.
- KTM 1290 Super Adventure. A high-tech model made in Austria, expensive both to purchase and to maintain. The Super Adventure is simply great in every way, but it’s still difficult to call it the most reliable motorcycle for touring, since, according to reviews, it sometimes doesn’t handle the harsh realities of Russian off-road conditions very well.
- Ducati Multistrada 1260 . Not all “Italians” leave behind oil stains on the asphalt, and the “Multistrad” is excellent proof of this. The only disadvantage of this model is the price, from 1.7 million and above, depending on the configuration. But the previous modification, Multistrada 1200, can be found much cheaper.
- Kawasaki Versys 1000 . A bike proven over the years, equipped with a derated and retuned engine from the Z1000. Since 2019, the third generation has been produced, also known as KLZ1000. Cheaper than most analogues from other brands, and also a little simpler in terms of equipment.
- Triumph Tiger 1200 . It is available in various modifications, more or less off-road, and costs comparable to the Multistrada, that is, about 1.7 million rubles. The Englishman is equipped with an in-line “three” and a bunch of auxiliary systems, and also features a high-tech chassis comparable to that of BMW’s flagships in the touring class.
- Suzuki V-Strom 1050. The closest analogue to the Kawasaki Versys in price, although its character is completely different due to the use of a V-twin instead of an inline-four. It costs reasonable money; for a million you can buy an almost new bike. The previous models, the V-Strom 1000 and V-Strom 650, can be a more budget-friendly option if you want a relatively inexpensive touring bike.
Yamaha YBR 125
And the rating opens, of course, with everyone’s favorite “Yobrik” (Jobrik or Yubrik - as you like). A very hardy, easy to control, sneaky “horse” for the city, which, however, will not be embarrassed by wet primers. Yes, it’s a 125, yes, it only has 10 “horses” and a carburetor, but it has the same service life as a “four hundred”, spare parts are cheap, the seating position is comfortable, the wind protection works surprisingly well, and the controls are “easy” even for schoolboy. Many motorcyclists started with the YBR, later switching to more serious road bikes, but if you now offer them a chance to ride it, I’m sure that hardly anyone will refuse to be behind the wheel of a Zhuzhik again!
For 166 thousand you can take it in a state of “not sitting still”, and with mileage you can save almost half of this amount. Here, for example, is a well-maintained, well-maintained option with a mileage of less than 15 thousand km.
Piaggio Vespa
Indeed: why do you need a motorcycle? You can take a stylish scooter, it will definitely be very easy to drive. The legendary Vespa produced in 2008 with a mileage of 21,000 km is sold for $2,350.
“Permissions” are needed, since there are 150 “cubes” here, and there is no need to change gears. I threw my laptop into the trunk and flew to work. Very convenient and economical! The description for the ad is laconic: “Excellent condition, no mileage in the Republic of Belarus.”
Honda CB400
Now they will call me a snob and ask: why is “SiBiha” not in first place?! My answer is this: this bike from the last century eats a lot. Ideally suited for the city, the classic is equipped with a very durable water engine, which is capable of “walking and walking.” Thanks to the Hyper Vtec system, it can hit “hundreds” in 4.5 seconds, provoking a pleasant reckless “annealing” in a straight line, but at speeds over 120 km/h its 4 carburetors eat up almost twice as much fuel! Instead of a modest 4.5 liters, it starts to consume 7–8! Otherwise, it’s a great street car with a comfortable seating position and grippy (double-disc front) brakes that can adequately slow it down from estimated speeds of under 200 km/h. The frame is rigid, duplex, the seat is straight, the seat height is only 78 cm, comfortable for most drivers of average height, especially girls. In terms of reliability, it’s almost a standard (this is Honda!), requiring a minimum of inexpensive consumables.
Here, for example, is an option with a mileage of less than 50 thousand for almost 20 years. It can be seen that it was used carefully, most likely by one owner. The motorcycle is well-maintained, without signs of falls, no frankly unnecessary tuning, there is a bonus in the form of a navigator mount.
For old school connoisseurs
- Harley-Davidson Road King . This bike is built on the same platform as the touring Electra Glide and Road Glide, but differs from them in a more classic design and the absence of additional equipment. The old-fashioned-looking steel horse looks similar to the equipment of the 60s of the 20th century, while possessing a high-torque engine, a capacious gas tank, comfortable seats and roomy panniers. You can find a used copy for about 600-650 thousand.
- Yamaha XV1900 Stratoliner . There are also names Roadliner and V-Star 1900. A chic and stylish cruiser, which has only one drawback - a 17-liter tank, and this volume is still not enough. However, with a quiet ride, the consumption is within 5-5.5 liters, so it still has a power reserve of 300 km. Prices start from 450-500 thousand rubles.
- Kawasaki Vulcan. There are different models in this range, with engines ranging from 400 to 2000 cc. see, cheap and expensive. All of them are quite large, even the 400, not to mention larger bikes. But the classic appearance, combined with good engines and large gas tanks traditional for Vulcans, makes them good motorcycles for long trips. If you like this series and have a wad of banknotes crunching in your wallet, you should take a closer look at the VN1700.
- Triumph Thunderbird . It is equipped with a 1.7-liter in-line twin, atypical for the cruiser class (the previous modification was 1.6 liters). There is no plastic, like Harleys - only good old iron, which is why the bike weighs very decently. But thanks to its solid size and well-thought-out ergonomics, it is very comfortable to travel far and with pleasure.
- Suzuki C109R . Aka C1800 and Boulevard C109. Huge, heavy, massive - even from the photo it seems that the asphalt is bending under it! In Russia, this model is not very widespread, and completely undeservedly. It has many similarities with the popular power cruiser Suzuki M109R, but the C109 has a retuned engine, and therefore is less vicious. On the contrary, there is much more comfort. The C109 is capable of covering long distances quickly without tiring the pilot too much.
Yamaha FZ6 2008
Not yet “sport”, no longer “classic”. The derated engine from the R6 ring, equipped with an injector, accelerates 187 kg of dry mass to 10 tons of revolutions very smoothly and predictably, so the “Phaser” can even be taken as a first serious motorcycle. This “six hundred” is a very good option for a metropolis like Moscow. Firstly, it makes it possible to seat a girlfriend (or friend) of almost any size as the “second number”, without losing dynamics and stability. In comparison, the “four hundred” cars “die” noticeably, and some of them strive to “become an asshole” if the passenger feels like stretching their legs or waving a hand at someone. Secondly, a naked is a naked: not an ounce of excess plastic, which tends to chip, causing unnecessary repair costs, a dense, balanced layout, a straight, comfortable fit, comfortable even for drivers above average height.
A remarkable option, slightly past the “psychological mark” of 50 thousand mileage, but quite vigorous and combative.
Kawasaki Ninja 500 2007
Despite the fact that production of the model was discontinued back in 2009, this sport tourist is significantly unified with the more popular models: KLE500, ER 5 and EN500 (Vulcan), so it is not difficult to find spare parts for it. The remarkable thing about this “Cava” is that the motorcycle is very narrow, maneuverable, light, like a YBR, durable, like a 750, and absorbs less fuel than 400 cc models. A small “minus” is the rather archaic appearance of the fairing, but a huge “plus” is that it copes with its duties perfectly. Part of the body kit, like the trunk, by the way, can be supplied from larger models. You can easily travel with two people on this Ninja, plus load 50 kilograms of luggage - 60 “horses” accelerate it to a cruising speed of 120–130 km/h. If you want to go it alone, downhill, with a tailwind, you can drive 200 km/h.
If you have a little maintenance skills, you can operate this copy, which has not yet completed 50 thousand, without problems for several more years.
Which motorcycles are better not to buy?
We won’t say categorically that a beginner won’t be able to handle any particular motorcycle. After all, in addition to objective factors, there are also subjective ones, for example, one’s own perseverance. Quite a few experienced motorcyclists started their journey with heavy “Urals” without a sidecar, powerful “one and a half trucks” scattered along the road from the interior of cheap “Chinese” cars or always sick “Voskhods”. And besides luck, there is a comparison. Example - the Honda Rebel is considered the most unsuccessful model of the brand in its class, but at the same time it will give odds to many representatives of the global automobile industry, and not only the Asian “no-names” and the Soviet “oldies”. Therefore, our small anti-rating is more of a recommendation that will help make choosing your first motorcycle a little easier.
- At least for the first time, forget about overly powerful and (or) heavy motorcycles, as well as those on which you feel like a circus strongman on a three-wheeled “Gnome”. In both cases, it will be difficult to cope with the technique, but it will be easy to “knock off the settings,” that is, to acquire the wrong skill.
- You should not purchase retro models for learning to ride a motorcycle, even if at one time they were considered the best in the world. Over 30 years, even with good care, the highest quality materials have already lost their margin of safety, but it is very difficult to find spare parts for equipment that has long been discontinued, and with constant downtime, it will take more than one season to gain and consolidate experience.
- Do not sacrifice quality for the sake of cost, unless you set yourself the goal of becoming not a motorcyclist, but a general-purpose mechanic. Constant repairs will take up money and time, and thoughts about the high probability of breakdown will deprive you of confidence on the road. In the first season you should only think about riding!
"China moto" against the global motorcycle industry
Today there are a lot of high-quality “Made in China” models. Moreover, to reduce the cost of production, a number of famous brands assemble some series in the Middle Kingdom, but at the same time, the quality and its control at such “Chinese enterprises are no worse than in Japan, Europe or the USA. Therefore, it is quite possible to consider a Chinese motorcycle as a training one if it is well assembled, and the brand is already known and has proven itself well.
Used vs new motorcycles
It's a lottery anyway. On the one hand, a bike that had already run should have shown all its disadvantages, on the other hand, it was not a fact, nor was it true that they had been eliminated. Therefore, when you only have enough money for a used one, it is better to borrow from your good friends, or invite a friend (or a paid consultant) who understands a particular model to view it.
In conclusion, we remind you that we and our article in no way claim to be the “ultimate truth.” Our goal is to warn novice riders about possible difficulties and mistakes, sharing the experience of those who have ridden a little more than others on two wheels. And we hope that we have helped you, at least a little, including deciding on the contenders for the title of “your first motorcycle.” We are waiting for comments and suggestions regarding new publications...
Suzuki Bandit GSF 1200 1998
And here – fans of Suza will greet me with incomprehension – why was the so popular “Bandit” sent almost to the “tail” of the list? I try to evaluate by many criteria, and the “friendliness” of a technology in relation to a beginner is not the least of them. Precisely because “two hundred liters” cannot be called user-friendly - it occupies an honorable, fourth place. The bike is very charismatic, “angry”, torquey, despite the significant derating of the engine (originally belonging to the sports “Jixer”), producing almost 100 “horses” and accelerating 211 kg of weight to 240 km/h. A passenger on a “beast” that reaches 100 km/h in almost 3 seconds must be ridden with caution. This “Bandit” is definitely not a humane choice as a first motorcycle, but it can give “wings” to an experienced rider in the traffic. If you find a version with the index S (sport-tourist) - in the next ten years you will be able to “wind up” another 30 “thousands”.
One of the very rare examples, falling into the price range due to the need for repairs.
For connoisseurs of comfort
Nothing better than a full-fledged luxury tourer of the gran turismo class has yet to be invented. Imagine going on a trip, sitting on a comfortable leather sofa with a backrest, heated for everything you can, with a full multimedia system, a spacious suitcase and a bunch of other amenities. Do you like this idea? Then it’s worth taking a closer look at the top tourist models from European, Japanese and American manufacturers.
- Honda GL1800 Gold Wing . Available in two versions, with and without a topcase (GL1800 F6B). Such a device costs from 1.5 million rubles and more; used copies in good condition can be found from about 700 thousand rubles. The Gold has everything you could want, and it is perhaps the ideal motorcycle for traveling as a couple. Unless, of course, you intend to drive off the asphalt onto dirt roads.
- Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. It comes in different versions, the most sophisticated of which is CVO Ultra. “Harley” is not only four centners of chrome-plated pathos, it is also a luxurious engine, an excellent level of comfort, a spacious gas tank combined with modest fuel consumption, reliability and a unique style. But all this pleasure costs a lot of money, on average 2-2.5 million, depending on the configuration. However, used options in acceptable condition can be found for a more modest amount, from 600-700 thousand. An alternative is the Harley-Davidson Road Glide Ultra, built on the same platform. There are also bagger versions, such as Street Glide and simply Road Glide, without the “Ultra” prefix, but they have fewer basic options and simplified suspensions. True, all Harleys are smaller in size than the Japanese ones, so if you need a large motorcycle for travel, it’s better not to look in the direction of the “Americans”.
- Yamaha XV1900 Star Venture . Fresh model, direct competitor to Golda. In the USA they sell for 20-22 thousand dollars, in Russia you can come across almost new bikes for a couple of million rubles. Star Venture is equipped with all sorts of auxiliary stuffing, a phenomenally reliable and high-torque engine from the XV1900 Stratoliner and Raider, a large tank and a 6-speed transmission. Judging by the reviews, this is one of the best motorcycles for traveling long distances.
- Indian Roadmaster . The revived “Indians” brand is produced by the Polaris concern, known not only for its snowmobiles and ATVs, but also for the defunct Victory brand. In many ways, Indianas resemble Harleys, and in terms of performance characteristics they correspond to the Electra Glide. They cost about the same, so the final choice is a matter of taste. In the USA, Indianas are more often bought for show-off than for tourism, so you can look at American auctions for a slightly used copy with minimal mileage and at a more reasonable price.
- BMW GTL 1600 . Bavarian bikes are famous for their incredible number of auxiliary systems and attention to detail. The GTL1600 is a large and massive model that can be roughly called something between a luxury tourer and a sports tourer. It is expensive, comparable to Golda, and even more expensive to maintain. But it’s not for nothing that BMW has so many fans who would never agree to exchange their two-wheeled friends for motorcycles of some other brand.
- Kawasaki VN1700 Voyager . An attempt to create a competitor to Golde, but more budget-friendly, although equipped with everything necessary. Voyager is very heavy, and its center of mass is located quite high, which makes it quite rolly in turns - this must be taken into account when selecting. It's good on the highway, but it's not very comfortable to drive in the city. There is also a bagger modification of the VN1700 Vaquero, but its standard cases are small.
Suzuki Bandit GSF 400
The younger “brother”, undeservedly left in the shadow of the liter “Bandit”, on the contrary, is a very good choice for a beginner. The classic, initially produced only for the domestic market, turned out to be so popular that it not only made its way to the West and East, but was produced for another 20 years almost unchanged, in parallel with improved models. The dynamic in-line 4-cylinder water-cooled carburetor engine produces a stable 59 hp. With. As in the case of the “SiBiha”, the bike is predictable (even sluggish) in the first gears and demonstrates an impressive “pickup” at speeds above 10 thousand. When equipped, the weight of the motorcycle exceeds 180 kg, but this does not affect handling and the bike steers well in the stream. Allows the carriage of a passenger, even without much loss of dynamics. Consumes a little more than 5 liters per hundred, accelerates to 170–180 km/h. A small “minus” is the lack of front suspension adjustments and very soft rear shock absorbers. Thanks to the ease of maintenance and the abundance of spare parts on the market (both new and contract), the model can live for another 20 years without any particular difficulties.
Here is a perfectly preserved example, despite its thirty years of age, with some competent tuning, and timely serviced.
Best Motorcycles for Beginners 2021
Kawasaki NINJA 650
It’s far from the best option, but if you really want a sportbike, it’s preferable to opt for something relatively weak. NINJA has a recognizable design and perfect style. In popularity it is on a par with such lines as Honda CBR, Suzuki GSX-R. It embodies the strength and power of sports motorcycles with the versatility of everyday use. A sharp front fairing, bright aerodynamic elements, a shortened muffler and a slightly raised stance are features that make this model stand out from many others.
The heart of the motorcycle was 650 cc with a power of 67 hp. Compared to its older brothers, it’s not surprising, but for a beginner you don’t need more. A two-cylinder engine with parallel placement provides a noticeable increase in power even at low speeds. Thanks to the lightweight frame, the model does not feel heavy and difficult to control. These indicators are at their best.

Yamaha XT 660 X
A bright representative of the motard class with a volume of 600 cubic meters and a power of 48 hp. 17-inch wheels will ensure maximum maneuverability not only on asphalt surfaces, but also far beyond it. The motorcycle feels confident at low and high speeds, does not have any technical breakthroughs: a conventional steel frame, an unremarkable telescopic fork and a 5-speed gearbox. At first glance, this is not a remarkable model, but due to its simplicity, repairs will cost less than modern analogues. In addition, it will be easier to understand for routine maintenance and replacement of consumables.

Honda CB400
The vast majority start with it. For those who are little familiar with the model range, Honda will remind the representative of the Soviet motorcycle industry Izh Planet 5, but with its agility and reliability it leaves it far behind. Having debuted on the market back in 1992, it has not lost its popularity to this day. The heart of the Honda CB400 was a 4-cylinder engine with a capacity of 399 cubic meters and a rated power of 53 hp. It is characterized by an upright seating position and is preferable for riders with a height of 160 to 190 cm. Due to its light weight, it is easy to control on busy roads in noisy cities. A small windshield will protect you from oncoming air flows on the highway. The cruising speed of the device is in the region of 130 -140 km/h.
Honda CB400
Advantages:
- 6-speed gearbox;
- high maneuverability;
- disc brake system;
- fuel consumption is 4 - 8 liters, depending on how aggressive the driving is;
- clean, classic design that has not lost its appeal over the years;
- the best solution for a beginner.
Flaws:
- at speeds above 120 km/h there are inconveniences caused by a strong oncoming flow, the problem will be solved by installing a large wind deflector;
- a fork that is too soft will require the installation of hard springs;
- the suspension is only relevant for hard road surfaces;
- high cost of maintenance.
Bajaj Pulsar 200NS
The Indian company quickly broke into the CIS market and took a leading position. The aggressive streetfighter is equipped with a powerful 199 cc and 24 hp heart. The liquid cooling system eliminates overheating on hot sunny days and when driving in dense city traffic. The Brembo braking system makes the motorcycle obedient in any hand. The brand has proven itself well on sports models with a volume of over 600 cubic meters.

Flaws:
- the cost is comparable to famous brands KTM, Suzuki, Honda, etc.;
- high price for consumables;
- short passes;
- no ABS;
- long handle stroke;
- mirrors too small;
- There is no gear indicator.
Motoland XT250HS
By far the most budget-friendly new product of 2021. It is equipped with a 250 cc engine producing 16 hp. Simple and reliable, based on the Honda MD 33. With proper maintenance, it will not cause trouble for tens of thousands of kilometers. Bright and aggressive design, well recognized by Husqvarna lovers. Front inverted fork with air release valves. An adjustable shock absorber is installed at the rear. One of the best solutions for a beginner due to its accessibility and ease of maintenance.

Honda PC800 1994
Very comfortable, soft, 800 cc tourer with a powerful, durable 2-cylinder V-twin. The engine (a relative of the power unit for the Africa Twin) produces only 57 hp. s., but at 6.5 thousand revolutions. His pull from the “bottom” is simply “locomotive”! At the same time, the gear ratios in the 5-speed gearbox are selected so that in both the third and fourth, the bike accelerates above “hundreds” equally easily. The main “weapon” of a motorcycle is comfort. Excellent wind protection, complete shelter from rain and splashes, soft “sofas”, an informative, rich dashboard, options for heating the steering wheel and seats. There are large integrated luggage cases, as well as the ability to install a central one, with a backrest for the passenger. All this “goodness” in no way interferes with steering – thanks to the low center of gravity, the motorcycle is very stable at low speeds. Even despite the significant weight of the device, when operating it in the city, the driver will not get tired, and, thanks to the passive safety of the design and the abundance of body kit, he will be better protected from possible accidents. As a motorcycle for a novice driver - for the same reasons - the PC800 (Pacific Coast) will fully justify itself, especially since it “eats” regular 92 gasoline (5-6 liters per hundred) and is equipped with an almost “eternal” cardan drive , which does not require special service. One “minus” - only 14 thousand “Pacifics” were produced and it is very difficult to find one like it.
If you add literally another 15 thousand to the estimated 150, you will get an awesome vintage tourer, no less popular in its age than the legendary Golda.
Where to start looking for your first motorcycle?
With an understanding of two things. The first thing is your safety! The second is comfort. Both are impossible if you don’t understand why you need a motorcycle! After all, motorcycle classes are not an extra line in the PTS, but an important criterion in determining applicability.
Where, who and with whom will travel
Here are the basic questions you need to answer for yourself to ensure you understand which motorcycle to buy and not regret your choice. Let's start with the last one - with whom.
With no one. If you are just starting to master motorcycle technology, then wait a while with passengers. After all, the weight distribution and inertia of a motorcycle in the presence of a passenger are completely different, plus, there is a high probability of inappropriate behavior of the passenger. And until you learn to confidently handle a bike, it is strictly not recommended to ride someone. Therefore, when choosing the first model, first of all you need to look at your own comfort, and not about the large back seat or its tilt in your direction (so that the girl would snuggle closer).
Ratio between motorcycle and driver dimensions
Even a technically ideal vehicle will be difficult to drive if the rider is not comfortable. You must take into account your own anthropometry. Therefore, the rule “the lighter and smaller, the better for a beginner” is not entirely correct - for a two-meter and one hundred kilogram “guy” riding some “Honda Dio” will be uncomfortable and even dangerous.
Free, correct fit (and different classes have their own), trouble-free control of the controls, good visibility (including from the mirrors), lack of stiffness and pressure, but no unnecessary movements in the saddle, on the pegs and levers - this is the required minimum . The maximum is when you also visually like the motorcycle itself and the way you look on it, because thoughts about being comical do not contribute to attentiveness. The ideal is if all this is combined with safety precautions.
Each motorcycle has its own roads
If a motorcycle is necessary for everyday driving around the city, then a small small-capacity motorcycle will be “the thing.” On a moped or scooter it will be easy to “break through” the taffy, just park and maneuver, but on the contrary, it will be difficult to overheat even a “fifty kopeck” over short distances. If the intended “habitat of the iron horse” is country roads, dirt roads, areas with a large number of curbs, different types of surfaces, then it makes sense to look at models with high ground clearance, decent suspension travel and large wheels. The worse the roads, the more “specialized” the motorcycle should be. For medium and long distances, it is better to choose models with good wind protection and a low center of gravity.
Hold off on buying a sportbike
Wind in your face, adrenaline, mobility and maneuverability, attention of the opposite sex - all this can be obtained on any motorcycle. But when motorcycling experience is limited to a motor school site or country dirt roads, there is no need to rush. That is, a sports motorcycle for beginners is definitely a bad choice. Attention, muscle memory, the ability to determine the situation in a split second and respond correctly to it come with time. But a sports motorcycle does not give it and does not forgive mistakes, and not only yours - poor-quality coating, unsuitable fluids, unqualified service (and qualified service costs a pretty penny, which we will talk about later) - all this needs to be taken into account.
The largest number of accidents on city streets and highways involving motorcyclists occurs with newcomers to “sports”!
Nobody forbids mastering a sportbike from scratch. But it’s better to do this on a motorcycle track, under the supervision of an experienced instructor, gaining road experience on a calmer vehicle. If absolutely not, then let us remind you that today there are enough motorcycles and scooters with good dynamics, but not so sensitive accelerator and some limitation of power and speed, stylized as “sports”. For the first time they will be enough, and then you can take more serious equipment
Buell Blast 2003
Despite the admonition: “nothing but the Japanese!”, I dare to recommend one “guy” from Milwaukee. It’s not without reason that the American “five hundred” stands out from the slender line: it may be a small “half-size”, but still, it’s a Harley! Apart from charisma and signature vibration, nothing in the form of Bull reminds of the legendary “relatives”, but the motorcycle itself is very good. If you neglect the need to periodically screw into place the footrests and muffler that unscrew from the shaking of the single-cylinder half-liter engine, the bike requires no more maintenance than any Japanese “itch.” The wheels are cast, the belt life is about 35 thousand kilometers. Adapted “city dweller”, with soft rear suspension, comfortable seat, compact dimensions. Despite the 163 kg weight, it steers sanely. The carburetor overhead valve engine is high-torque and produces 34 hp. With. at 6.5 rpm min. The Americans are positioning it as a tool for initial training (after all, it’s half a Sportster), which is fully confirmed by good handling and a “natural” maximum speed limiter (in the form of terrible vibration) at 180 km/h.
Spare parts for such a vigorous option as this one can be found at the “officials” or on E-bay.
Mustang MT110-GY
Minimum price – $595 Mustang MT110-GY is a youth model, fast, modern and elegant. It differs from its predecessors both in appearance and technical characteristics. With a consumption of 2.8 liters per 100 kilometers, this is a very economical motorcycle in terms of fuel consumption. This is the most purchased motorcycle model in Ukraine in 2021. Spare parts are easily replaceable and easy to find on the market. Due to its simple controls, the model is ideal for beginners. Owners and dealership owners speak very positively about the Mustang MT110-GY. Country of origin: China Maximum speed: 80 km/h Engine power: 2 hp Fuel tank volume: 13.5 liters Year of manufacture: 2010
A few final words
Regardless of your choice, every motorcycle sold on the aftermarket will require further investment. Some – just oil changes, some – all consumables “in a circle”. Most sellers understand this very well and are ready to “throw off” a little for service if there is a reasoned bargain. There is a certain “limit” to this phenomenon, which should not be abused. Owners of used motorcycles often have consumables (tires, spare parts) set aside “for the future,” which they can share “for the load” if they agree on the price. By bargaining culturally, there is a greater chance of saving than by insisting on a discount for urgency or condition. However - don’t go to extremes - don’t take a very “tired” bike because of the attractive price - you’ll spend more on a chain of repairs.
You can protect yourself from buying “scrap metal” simply: first, focus on the average price in the region, second, be sure to watch what you will buy. Involve an expert who repairs motorcycles or, at a minimum, who understands motorcycle equipment.
In this part of the article, I wanted to make a short review of motorcycles suitable for the role of the first or second. I hope I succeeded. The review is aimed at beginners who are searching. PART 1 PART 2 you are reading PART 3
N.B.
This part of the article is in some way a bonus material to its main part.
I did not set out to cover all possible options. After riding a Yamaha YBR 125cc for a season and a half, I came to the conclusion that I wanted a road motorcycle, mainly for country trips (i.e. with a fairing) and preferably with ABS. When you make your choice, try to collect as much information as possible on the models that interest you. The availability of spare parts for certain modifications, their prevalence and generic sores - all this will help you when choosing.

For beginners (125-400cc)
If you have no experience of moving along our roads on any type of car/motor vehicle , then choosing a model is simple and banal - Yamaha YBR 125cc.
It’s better that you get tired of this motorcycle by the middle of the season than that your first season ends before the onset of dank autumn.
When choosing a YBR 125 in the secondary market, it is better to avoid motorcycles produced in 2007-2008. The fact is that motorcycles of these years were equipped with a vacuum carburetor, in which the choke foot was replaced with a rod. The advantage of this solution is the ability to regulate the opening value of the throttle valve when warming up, but such a device has a serious drawback - over time, the ability of the rod to be held in the open position is lost, which leads to spontaneous closure.
To avoid warming up your motorcycle over time with a clothespin, it’s best to exclude motorcycles from these years from your list.
You can find out more about the differences between YBR from different years by searching: Link to Yandex
Kawasaki Ninja 250/300cc
Also suitable for the role of a first motorcycle (provided you have at least experience on a moped or scooter). But there is a rule - everyone drops the first motorcycle. And those units that do not drop are an exception to the rule. With a high degree of probability, you will also fall, even if out of the blue, forgetting about the step. Therefore, if you are planning to start with this motorcycle, be mentally and financially prepared for plastic repairs. And don’t be upset when you fix it - this is an important stage in becoming a motorcyclist.
If you already have road, but not motorcycle, experience (cow bikes are included here)
The choice is somewhat richer - this is not only the Ninja 250-300 (from spring 2013) cc from Kawasaki, but also the Japanese 400tk.
Depending on finances and preferences, you can purchase either a heavily used 400t (golden hands, a workshop and tools for maintenance are required), or a completely fresh Honda CB-400 (there are options even with ABS) or a Yamaha XJR 400, and sometimes a Suzuki SV-400. However, the cost of a new 400cc is close to the cost of a 600cc of comparable years, and their spare parts supply, to put it mildly, is unimportant.
Many articles and reviews have been written about the characteristics of motorcycles. You can find information about the model you like on the Internet. The more information you collect about the bike you like, the more likely you are to get exactly what you want.
I will once again highlight several of the most popular models.
Honda CB-400
Legendary sea bream.
Where would we be without her? It’s better to buy this motorcycle in the fall for 80-100 thousand, invest another 40-50 thousand and finish it over the winter. A live sea bream usually doesn’t cost less than 150 thousand, but it’s expensive because... you will probably still have to invest at least another 10k. This is the most popular 400 in our country and that is why most often there are no problems with spare parts for it, however, for the most part these are used spare parts from broken motorcycles. Since finding a live seabird for humane money is very problematic (how many times the mileage was intentionally changed or the broken tidy was replaced on many of them - only God knows), I would still advise you to pay attention to the above-described Ninja 250cc.
Suzuki SV-400
An interesting model and it will definitely be on your list.
In addition to such usual nuances for 400tok as age and inflated cost, the SV also has a couple of birth sores.
The model has a two-cylinder V-engine, the weak point of which is the crankshaft (or rather, oil starvation and its consequences for the knee). The crankshaft is killed in an elementary way - they screwed it up (this 400 is great at this), didn’t keep an eye on the oil level (finding a used SV that won’t eat it up is very problematic), dropped it and the engine ran on its side for a long time, etc.
For those who love the classics, there is a naked version with handlebars, and for beginner riders there is an S version with a fairing and clip-ons. If you really want to, you can install additional plastic on the S version and get a completely bonneted version.
Remember, this banter appeared for a reason:
The advantages of the SV 400 are excellent low-end traction and low weight. This is one of the easiest and quickest scabies on our market.
Most often they ask for a high price for an esveshka and, adding, you can take the 650cc version (if experience and head allow it). My older brother still has the same illnesses, they just occur a little less frequently. However, more about it below.
Yamaha XJR 400
A classmate of the Seabihi from Yamaha, it is equipped with an air-oil-cooled engine. According to reviews, the engine is a little meaner and the brakes are stronger, however, breakdowns occur more often, and the motorcycle is not the most popular.
Suzuki Bandit 400
Similar to the CB-400, but angrier.
The device is still for those who know how to maintain equipment and get a kick out of it. The model is quite old, with spare parts as usual. There are significantly fewer of them on the secondary market than the same CB-400. There are also sports 400s, for example: Kawasaki ZXR 400, Kawasaki ZZR400 or Honda CBR 400 . Without going into too much detail, most older Japanese 400s will have issues with parts and/or reliability. Choosing a living device without qualified help will be very problematic, and the likelihood that you will have to repair it at least once a season is very high.
And at the same time, there are very, very well-maintained options for reasonable money. He who seeks will find.
There is also a Suzuki Impulse 400 , but this is already from the 250cc Bandit category. A very rare motorcycle, there are simply no spare parts for it.

For more experienced (600-650cc)
After a season or two spent behind the wheel of a 125-400cc motorcycle, many pilots think that the motorcycle “doesn’t work” and it’s time to increase the capacity.
Below is information on some of the possible options.
It is traditionally believed that Honda and reliability are synonymous words, whether to believe it or not is a matter of choice, but the gearbox is really cool.
Honda F4i
It has a powerful injection engine, very comfortable clip-ons (compared to the same SV 650), reliable, very light and quite low in height.
Finding a live copy for reasonable money is problematic, the model is old and out of production. In recent years, production has been resumed, but based on the Hornet, not the CBR.
It makes sense to order this model from Europe or the USA, and also consider already fitted options - there is a better chance of finding a live motorcycle.
There is an early version of the F4i labeled “Sport”. Distinctive features of this modification are a separate seat and the absence of a central footrest.
There is no such useful thing as abs for beginners. Real mileage most often starts from 30,000 keme, and in the spring of 2013 the price tag for a live device will most likely start from 230,000 rubles.
The motorcycle will quickly lose value, and then it will be difficult to sell a device with a mileage of 50-60k keme (to be honest and not twist it), except perhaps to stunters and at a different price.
Honda CB-600 Hornet
It is likely that this is the kind of motorcycle you have dreamed of all your life. At the same time, it cannot be called a light motorcycle, and the seat height will be most comfortable for people over 175cm tall.
The faired S version available on the market is quite old. The model has a conventional fork with a 41 mm stay diameter. Most people agree that the fork is soft, which is why the Hornet is “weak in the front end.”
HONDA motorcycles are traditionally one of the most expensive, which also affects their cost on the secondary market.
The reality is that the cost of a fuel-injected SV-650 or FZ6 is comparable to the cost of an older, carbureted Hornet.
Despite all the praises for Honda’s reliability, it’s worth remembering that the motorcycle is bought second-hand, and you don’t know how it was treated before you, but anyone can be killed.
Honda CBF-600S
Tourist for beginners.
The peculiarity of the model is the presence of ABS as standard, a height-adjustable saddle, which is very important for people under 170 cm in height, and also an adjustable windshield.
This is a very heavy motorcycle. When getting to know him, try to roll him around with your arms/legs; after all, you’ll have to put him in the garage, and sometimes you’ll have to turn around on the spot.
The old version, as usual, is carb, and the new one is injection (since the end of 2007).
Our market offers the S version with a fairing, but there is also a naked version.
The analogue of this model from Yamaha is the XJ6. Each model has its own advantages. For example, the XJ6 is lighter than the CBF 600, but ABS is optional.
Suzuki SV-650
A good device as a next motorcycle, it “drives itself” due to the fact that the V-twin engine pulls from the bottom.
There are two generations of SV and three versions of each: naked, faired, hooded. The pictures above show the second generation.
Production of the second (redesigned, injection) began in 2003. However, already in 2004, the model was further refined and, for example, the driver’s seat from 2003 is only suitable for 2003.
In 2007, the model was further refined - a second spark plug was added to each cylinder, and optional ABS also appeared.
Regardless of the generation, the model has its own characteristics such as: 1) Weak brakes 2) Weak fork 3) Problem with oil starvation and, as a result, death of the crankshaft
One of the nuances is that the fuel level indicator is designed in the form of a light bulb; when it lights up, it’s time to look for a gas station.
I would recommend looking at the second generation, it is fuel-injected and there is a chance to find it with ABS, although the appearance is not for everyone. In my opinion, the chance of getting on a motorcycle with a dying crankshaft is much higher for the first generation than for the second, due to age.
The version with clip-ons has a specific fit and is uncomfortable for many; before purchasing, try sitting on it for 10-15 minutes (while you communicate with the seller), or even better, take a circle around the yards if the owner allows it.
The SV has a fairly soft rear shock. Moreover, if you tighten it, then for a person with a height of about 170 cm, the motorcycle may already turn out to be a little tall, although in the loose version it was “just right”.
The height problem can be solved with the TRW Lucas Lowering Kit, but this is quite expensive.
Finding a live SV in good condition and with low mileage is a very difficult task. If you add ABS to the list, then it’s very, very good.
Advice: Travel first and see the options for yourself. If you suddenly like one, grab a knowledgeable friend or forum member and go look at the chassis and listen to the engine.
The ideal option would be if the mechanic is knowledgeable about SV engines. The V-shaped two-cylinder engine is quite noisy, and not everyone can hear the sound of the dying crankshaft. A mistake will be costly.
I personally watched as a man tried to sell a dying SV for fabulous money. As a result, a month later the motorcycle was already hanging on Auto.ru with a “damaged knee”.
Cost is the second serious disadvantage of SV in our market. It is almost impossible to buy a device for adequate money, and this despite the fact that initially the model gained popularity precisely because of its price/quality ratio and was the cheapest in the 600 current series. The situation when SV-650s are sold on forums for two or three years is completely normal, most often it’s a matter of price.
At the same time, there is no point in buying such a motorcycle in order to later sell it significantly cheaper or wait two or three years until a “connoisseur” is found. Therefore, in my opinion, it makes sense to purchase an SV only if its cost is about 160-180 thousand rubles (for the second generation), for the option with ABS you can throw in another 10k.
The SV has a continuation of its model range in the form of the Suzuki Gladius, but in our country it is quite rare.
Suzuki Bandit 600-650
A good country motorcycle, but very heavy.
There are 600cc (old) and 650cc (new) motorcycle models. There are also two versions available on the market - with and without fairing.
The curb weight is about 245 kg, so when you meet him, try to “roll his legs” with him. For pilots with a height of about 170 cm, it will most likely be a bit tall, which, combined with its weight, is very critical. At the same time, the weight of the motorcycle will be very useful on the highway, plus the gears are placed ideally for country trips.
The motorcycle is suitable for tall and strong pilots.
Relatively new vehicles have ABS as an option.
Most likely suitable for large and tall pilots, although sometimes even fragile women ride lowered versions.
Yamaha FZ6 Fazer
The model is currently out of production and there are three varieties.
1. “Classic” 98-horsepower FZ6 2. Still the same classic FZ6, but strangled by a limiter to 78 hp. The conversion to full strength takes about 30 minutes and requires nothing more than pliers or wire cutters. 3. Version S2 with brake calipers from the old R1, instrumentation from the FZ1 and a modified fairing.
Both with and without fairing are available in the market. The “minor” disadvantages of each option include the cost of the original headlight for the naked and the plastic fairing for the S2 version. She's tall.
The last two options, in theory, come with ABS, but personally I have only seen the third one with it (Fazer S2).
One of the birth problems is a weak generator; driving through many kilometers of traffic jams with high beams is difficult for it. The battery of this motorcycle is located not under the seat, but under the tank, which makes its maintenance somewhat more labor-intensive.
There are also American versions of this device on our market. Unlike Europeans, Americans have: • No ABS • No factory immobilizer (i.e. regular keys) • “Buggy” turn signals
Those. the dream of an FZ6 without an immobilizer and with ABS can be immediately discarded.
Why no immobilizer? The fact is that Yamaha has a very specific one. The set of keys consists of one red and two black keys. The red key is the master key by default and only with its help can you flash the black keys in case of a failure (the on-board computer “forgot”/lost the key) or the key is lost. Only two black keys can be stored in the memory of the on-board computer at the same time; it is physically impossible to program a third one.
Those. If you have lost your black key, making a new one will not be difficult. Losing the red key entails either replacing all the locks, which costs a pretty penny (check with the officials for details), or using various tricks, including installing an immobilizer emulator.
Hence the logical advice - do not buy a European version of a motorcycle if it does not have a red key.
The FZ6's weak point is its attractive, lightweight aluminum frame. It is not recommended to place sliders on it; if it falls in the places where they are attached, the frame often bursts with all that follows. Better put the arcs.
For pilots around 170 cm tall, the FZ6 will likely be a little tall. The problem can be solved by playing with the suspension settings or installing a lowering kit for the rear shock absorber.
Some people like it, some don't. The engine of the FZ6 is derated from the R6, which affects its character. Up to 7-8k rpm, the device drives quite phlegmatically, but after that the spirit of the R6 awakens in it, with all that it implies. This engine needs to be turned, it is for those who love and already know how to anneal and steer.
As for the cost, a live FZ6 in good condition can be found in the range from 180k (for the FZ6 of the first years of production) to 250k (for the FZ6 S2 with ABS 2008-2009 onwards) rubles. In reality, motorcycles costing more than 240k rubles are selling quite sluggishly; only variants with ABS and in good condition are quickly sold out.
Motorcycles costing 250-300 thousand often have a lot of tuning, which, as a rule, not everyone needs, but the owner wants to sell everything as a “set”.
Yamaha XJ 600 and XJ6
XJ 600
An old and rather heavy motorcycle.
If you buy yourself such a horse, then selling it later can be very problematic (2-3 seasons are in order, if not “merged”). Due to the antiquity and irrelevance of the grandmother, I propose to pay more attention to her granddaughter XJ6. The father in this case is the FZ6, and the mother is the R6.
ХJ6 N/Diversion/Diversion F
The XJ6 engine is derated to 78 hp.
strength and it will not be possible to increase their number (well, perhaps very slightly) Regarding the XJ6, opinions are usually divided into extremely contradictory ones. Some consider it a crisis and cheaper motorcycle, while others consider it a chic option for still inexperienced pilots and those who are not looking for “something out there” for every day.
The motorcycle is easy to control (partly due to the narrower 160mm rear cylinder), has an elastic engine and a modern look. The instrument panel is very informative, the only criticism is the turn signal light - there is only one and it is impossible to understand whether the right or left is on.
There are three variants of the XJ6 - N, Diversion and Diversion F. They are all the same motorcycle with different amounts of plastic body kit depending on the tastes and preferences of its intended owner.
There is also an American version - the FZ6R, similar to the Diversion F. The model actually replaced the FZ6, which replaced the FZ8 in the Yamaha line, and in the states the FZ6R is positioned as a sport for beginners. External differences that will immediately catch your eye will be: a separate seat, large-sized “burdock” turn signals and rectangular reflectors on the fork and the plate for the registration plate.
Smooth traction throughout the entire rev range, optional ABS, excellent handling and modern appearance make this device an excellent intermediate link on the way to the coveted “liter”. It will not become “small” as quickly as 400cc after the YBR 125 or Ninja 250, this is a device for at least a season or two.
Despite the weight, the motorcycle will be an ideal choice for girls. According to legend, in the FZ6R version the seat is additionally height adjustable. For convenience, you can even adjust the position of the steering wheel, although in practice this is extremely rarely required.
The model is still poorly represented on the secondary market; an adequate price for the version with ABS starts from 240k rubles. If you are focusing on the option without ABS, then the stock option starts from 220k rubles.
IMPORTANT! For the XJ6, it is also not recommended to purchase a motorcycle with an immobilizer in the absence of a red master key. The reason is described above in the review of the FZ6 motorcycle.
It makes sense to additionally search for the XJ6 in the XJ 600 section. Just enter the year of manufacture from 2009 (it was from this year that sales of the JX6 began in Russia). Sometimes sellers mistakenly list the XJ6 as an XJ 600, which is not in demand, and this affects sales. This gives you a chance to find a good device that, by chance, ended up in the wrong section. The American version of the FZ6R is often found in the Phaser section, where some sellers, for various reasons, attribute as many as 98 phaser forces to it (the main thing is that the PTS should have 78).
Kawasaki ER6
ER6, also known as Ruff, is a rather unique motorcycle with an in-line two-cylinder engine.
The “naked” version is perfect for the city, and for the countryside there is a hooded version.
Depending on the year of production, the ER6 differs in the dashboard, swingarm, plastic and more. The model turned out to be worthy and takes its place on the pilots’ path to the coveted “liter”.
The question often arises, which is better, ER6 or XJ6. These are two approximately identical motorcycles and you should choose based on the comfort of fit, personal preferences and needs. Since the engines are still different, the ER6 will be better at low speeds, and the XJ6, for example, will be a little faster at maximum speed.
In the US, the ER6 is sold under the Ninja brand and is positioned as a beginner's sport. ER6 is a lightweight, very beautiful and moderately fast and nimble device. The fact that it has an “in-line two” engine means you don’t buy it for life.
As for the complaints about the quality of Kawasaki, it may be a little worse than that of its competitors, but this is not at all significant. Absolutely everything breaks. It’s just that when a Honda breaks down, a person thinks that he is out of luck and quietly goes for spare parts. But when a Kawasaki breaks down, holiwars immediately begin on the topic: “Well, you were warned!”
Choose a motorcycle carefully, take care of it properly and then it will not let you down.
