TOP - 7 motorcycles for the city up to 150 thousand rubles [CLEAR]

A budget of 150 thousand rubles has dominated the market for the first motorcycles for the average beginner for decades. There are many factors to blame for this, but their analysis does not fit into the topic of the article. Nevertheless, with this amount, sweat and blood, you have a chance to find a faithful two-wheeled comrade.

This note is intended primarily for those who are choosing their first motorcycle without having the proper experience and knowledge, or are well informed, but are simply looking for further confirmation of their thoughts. Experienced bikers who accidentally wandered into the light are already indignant about how they ended up here, but I think they, too, having scrolled to the end, somewhere in the depths of their souls, will touch a string of nostalgia and delve into the warm carburetor memories of their youth.

The material on this topic will be divided into 2 parts: “CLEAR” and “REGULAR” motorcycles. This is done due to the “diversity” of the audience choosing a budget motorcycle. For some, it is an outlet for life, a way to break away from reality, get sensations that money can’t buy, and just drive. And someone chooses a motorcycle that will become his accessory, a complement to his image, purely a tool for obtaining certain sensations. And there are no right or wrong here, you just have to remember that no matter how you feel about a motorcycle, the main thing is to treat yourself correctly and not engage in self-deception. Thus, today we will look at the “CLEAR” motorcycles. Their distinctive features: a developed plastic body kit, aggressive appearance and exclusivity (the combination of characteristics may vary).

As for the motorcycles themselves in the 150 budget, there is no need to start battles trying to prove the obvious advantage of one over the other. After 20 - 30 years, the reliability and fault tolerance of each of them became equal to the chances of winning the lottery. Someone is lucky, and for relatively little money he gets a really good motorcycle that runs for several seasons without significant problems. And someone will immediately fall into the basement with spare parts and insomnia, but will come out with a wealth of experience and knowledge.

“The simplest and most logical path is not always the most correct. Sometimes it doesn’t hurt to take a long detour, but reach your destination as a completely different person..."

And we begin...

Attention! The material presented in this article is solely the result of passing the author’s experience through the prism of his perception.

7. KAWASAKI ZZR 400

Scientific fact: 90% of newcomers who are inclined to buy a “sports motorcycle” secretly want to buy themselves a ZZR and zip around town on it.

Only lazy people probably didn’t write about Zizer. “The most common motorcycle in the CIS! Lots of cheap parts!” - the forums shout. Unfortunately, I have to disagree with this statement. The motorcycle itself is not as common as we would like. Used spare parts, for the most part, are in extremely poor condition. Also, which is rather unobvious, but very important - despite the widespread confidence in the understandability of the model and the abundance of information on it - finding a solution to your problem on the Internet can be problematic. The “community” of zizer breeders is rather sluggish, and specialized groups and forums are not full of activity. However, the motorcycle itself is quite good, and if you get the support of people who have already figured it out, then most of the faults will turn out to be easily fixable and not so significant, for example, the constant rumble and knocking coming from the right side of the engine is just a tired bearing clutch basket, and a sharp drop in power and unstable operation is caused by air leaks in the area of the air filter housing. As for the sport-tourist form factor itself, namely the “plastic motorcycle”, before you buy it, you should evaluate your capabilities and decide whether you are ready for the next maintenance with complete disassembly of all the plastic and its replacement in the event of an accident at a price at least 30 thousand for a sane set.

6. SUZUKI RF 400

The second motorcycle that separates sports tourists from this budget: for some reason everyone separates the prefix “tourist”, leaving only “sport”. The consequences of this approach are, as always, unpleasant. From sharp accelerations and switching at high speeds, especially from first to second gear, when the inertia of movement is not yet so great, the gearbox experiences a colossal load due to the weight of the motorcycle in the region of 210 kg. As in the case of the ZZR 400, every second “Rfka” is in danger of breaking the grooves on the countershaft, which leads to chronic overshoot of the second gear. The engine is still noisy, and plastic is still hard to find. But that doesn't make the bike bad. The main problem, in my opinion, is the lack of a central step, which is why when servicing you have to engage in invention, and sometimes it is completely impossible for one to cope with a seemingly simple task. Mikuni carburetors, which are used to scare “armchair experts” on forums, are in reality quite easy to maintain and many craftsmen can easily cope with such a task. Unfortunately, time also takes its toll, and the steel frame, which has clearly been saved on, is susceptible to rotting, although this does not occur on all specimens.

I would like to make a separate reservation regarding the two existing versions: the so-called “gray-headed” with a conventional timing device and the “red-headed” one, designated by the “VC” index, with a more inflated boost. Refusing a living “gray head” in favor of a VC is not the most balanced action. You won’t feel a noticeable difference in dynamics, considering that the motorcycle has only 400 cc volume, but high boost implies the use of higher quality fuel, ideally 98, which, firstly, leads to high costs, and secondly, at a minimum It is not available everywhere, even though it is already the eve of 2021.

However, the SUZUKI RF 400 has increased “Clarity” and yard authority, so it easily enters today’s top.

5. SUZUKI GSX 600f KATANA

Despite the fact that “Katana” is clearly of a different class than ZZR and RF, it is still stuck in a budget of up to 200 thousand rubles. There are several reasons for this: air-oil cooling, a tubular frame that also rots, not the best assembly and the low prevalence of the model. But that's what makes her such a desirable piece of the Clear Motorcycles pie. Often, you can find “katanas” in excellent condition for their age. The old, proven engine, which it shares with the Suzuki Bandit 600, is really noisy and rough, especially until it warms up and the pistons have no thermal clearances (see “Air cooling”). The community of owners is even less active than in the case of the ZZR and RF; the plastic is practically an artifact, obtaining which can be a task comparable to a flight to Mars. But the most interesting thing is that all the problems with assembly and components that opponents of this motorcycle rely so much on are clearly nothing compared to much more common analogues, where good Japanese assembly and fitting have long turned into Russian (red sealant instead of gaskets, welding with epoxy, fastening plastic with clamps and wood screws and other joys). It follows that if you find a decent option, which is difficult to do in a given budget, but possible, you will get a completely confident motorcycle, which will still have time to bring a lot of positive things before becoming a burden.

4. SUZUKI SV 400 S

The SV 400 is a proud representative of the so-called “hybrids”. On the one hand, the motorcycle is the spitting image of a road bike. It is moderately friendly and simple, without excessive boost of the engine and stiffness of the suspension, and on the other hand, the clip-ons, the angle at the knee when landing and the developed plastic in the “S” version clearly classify it as “Clear”. The motorcycle has proven itself well on domestic roads, and all its “sores” are well known and can be quite easily avoided with proper operation. This, for example, includes the resulting oil starvation of the front cylinder when the front wheel is lifted and the inevitable death of the crankshaft in the case of carelessness in monitoring the oil level. And, it would seem, well, replace it, drive it, check it sometimes. But the problem also lies in the tendency of the engine itself to eat oil at high speeds, which are inevitable due to the “Clarity” of this model. Therefore, it will definitely be useful to keep a liter of oil with you on the road.

3. HONDA CBR 600 F2

Despite the fact that Honda positioned this model as a “sport-tourist”, real youngsters are still pushing hard on a 20-year-old motorcycle. However, the CBR 600 withstands the onslaught of the Slavic enemy with the tenacity of a samurai, and remains a good option to purchase to this day. Prices for spare parts for it are significantly lower than for Suzuki, and the prevalence of the model leaves behind a decent supply of used elements. Plastic is still obscenely expensive, and used ones are sealed many times and no longer fit together. Another problem is constantly burning relay regulators. But this problem should not be classified as significant. You can replace the RR anywhere and at any time in 5 minutes, and their availability on sale does not allow this unit to be called problematic. However, the F2 is already much sportier than the ZZR and RF, which will undoubtedly affect the condition in which you receive it. After all, as you know, this motorcycle has most likely never seen a gentle regime, and as the years go by, its wear only increases. In addition, for some reason, even on a perfectly preserved motorcycle, you often find a rotten gas tank, all the rust from which rushes into the carburetors, eliminating the possibility of further operation without maintenance.

2. KAWASAKI NINJA 250

We move down to slightly more down-to-earth motorcycles, which are primarily suitable for short guys or girls. Unfortunately, this is the problem with Kawasaki’s “check”, which affected its popularity. The motorcycle itself is relatively new, so putting it on a par with the above-mentioned models is unreasonable. Here, taking into account the designated budget, you need to make a choice: either quickly or reliably. I wouldn't like to call the Ninja 250 a slow motorcycle. With its 33 horsepower and two-cylinder engine, it is able to please a beginner with good low-end traction, acceptable dynamics and even some kind of sound. Coupled with the compactness of the owner (the motorcycle, by the way, is also very small), a good engine and good condition, for 150 thousand you can find an excellent option for moving around the city and suburbs, which will not cause additional hassle, will be inexpensive to maintain and economical, and most importantly the main thing is that you can find spare parts for it without resorting to shamanic rituals with dancing around a fire.

1. HONDA CBR 250

And again a “check”, but this time from Honda. Today on the market it is a serious competitor to the Ninja 250, where it loses in some ways and wins significantly in others. And the main weakness of the CBR 250 would be the single-cylinder engine with 25 horsepower, which by the standards of the Chinese motorcycle industry represented in our latitudes is still an unattainable height, but still this is not as much as we would like, even taking into account the “maximum speed” in the area 150 km/h, and the vibrations from the “single-barrel gun” are much more noticeable. But, the most important advantage of this particular motorcycle, as a “clear” yard machine, but still perfect for a beginner, is the injector and ABS. No more extended suction with a roar throughout the entire area, no more panic when braking. To find a live option in a budget of 150, you will have to try. Most likely, it will have scuffs, perhaps dropped several times, but these problems are nowhere near those experienced by the average owner of an old Japanese car. Overall, the motorcycle is good, it’s just a pity that it’s not enough...
