In Russia there is a saying: “To fall in love is like a queen, to lose is like a million.” Russians are not accustomed to half measures, and if we have a desire to pamper ourselves with something like that, then it will certainly be the best. Having tested the Polaris Sportsman Touring XP 1000 ATV, we can definitely say that this “American” is perfect for the broad Russian soul.
For avid hunters and fishermen, an ATV is by no means a toy, but a real means of transportation. And they approach the choice of transport fundamentally, as they say, taking into account their needs. For miners, it is extremely important that the all-terrain vehicle be reliable, easy to use, have all kinds of luggage racks and compartments for transporting various things, and, of course, be a two-seater. Powerful ATVs are especially popular among those who like to wander around with a gun. It is clear why. Now you take a 500 cc machine, ride it for a month or two and realize that this volume is catastrophically small (especially when driving together) and your soul asks for something more. As a result, you will sell the unfortunate “five hundred” for next to nothing and - damn it! — buy the most powerful ATV.
Horses matter
Of course, if you take an all-terrain vehicle solely to ride it three times a year to pick mushrooms and berries, then there is no point in chasing power indicators. However, for the needs of seasoned hunters, when you need to get into such wilds where a tank will disappear without a trace, and then drag out a large trophy in the form of a wild boar or elk, then horsepower plays a key role. The Polaris Sportsman Touring XP 1000 is equipped with a two-cylinder power plant producing 88 horsepower. With a weight of 403 kilos, this two-seater ATV has enough power for the eyes. Even when you have fully loaded the luggage racks and seated a well-fed passenger behind you, these circumstances do not affect the acceleration dynamics at all.
How quick is it to jump from a stop? Suffice it to say that this is the most powerful model in the Polaris ATV line. You press on the gas and it feels like the acceleration will never end. At the same time, adjusting the variator allows you not to cause wheels to slip when starting off. For example, when during the test we drove into a swamp and stopped, such a gentle adjustment of the variator allowed us to continue driving through the mess without “deepening”.
Price
The Polaris SPORTSMAN XP 1000 ATV without mileage is currently in the price range from 800 thousand rubles to 1 million Russian rubles. The price tag of a car directly depends on the configuration and year of manufacture, therefore, the newer the equipment and the richer its configuration, the more expensive it is.
The used version is now in the price range from 550 thousand rubles to 790 thousand Russian rubles, depending on factors such as technical condition, mileage and year of production.
Two in a boat
As we said, the Touring XP 1000 is a thoroughbred two-seater. When driving in tandem, neither the helmsman nor the passenger feel any deterioration in ergonomics. There is more than enough space for both. Although in fairness it should be noted that the passenger rides with great comfort, because he sits on a real soft throne with an additional shock absorption system. By the way, despite the fact that the hero of our story is a comfortable two-seater ATV, you can’t call it a clumsy limousine. Polaris has extraordinary maneuverability, in the literal sense, you can spin like a snake between a palisade of growing birch trees.
Reinforced
A powerful engine requires the equipment to strengthen all adjacent nodes. In particular, in order for the liter Sportsman Touring XP to withstand all the hardships of the Russian off-road with dignity, the manufacturer strengthened the front drives by 50% (we commonly call this part CV joints), added strength to the gearboxes and gearbox, and increased the performance of the braking system. Well, so that the engine can “breathe” easily off-road, I increased the air filter.
In terms of aesthetics, no matter how strange this phrase may sound, the “thousander” is also enhanced. To prevent contact with bushes and tree branches from spoiling the plastic, turning it in a couple of trips into the semblance of an old cast-iron, deeply scratched frying pan, the manufacturer used a new painting technology. Automotive paint is nine times more scratch resistant than body-painted plastic. In general, even after years of merciless use, your Touring XP 1000 will remain a piece of candy in appearance.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to reveal all the features of an off-road vehicle in a short test. And yet, after several hours of driving on rough off-road conditions, this liter “tourist” left the most positive impressions of itself. You can feel the enormous potential of the engine, excellent handling, excellent maneuverability and unsurpassed comfort. And at the price, the Polaris Sportsman Touring XP 1000 will probably give any classmate a run for its money.
ATV catalog
Juicy orange
The first thing you notice when looking at the ATV from the side is not even the bright orange color, but the unusually large wheels. They are indeed larger than the standard Sportsman ones both in diameter and width. And with their toothiness they can compete even with tractor ones. These are exactly what you need to overcome big mud (which is what the Sportsman in the High Lifter version is designed for)! The second point that attracts attention is the same orange color, so beloved by all rescue services. The front metal of the quad, the rear of the frame, as well as the steering wheel, elements of the dashboard and seats, and even the High Lifter inscription itself are thickly painted in it as the culprit of this holiday called the “orange harvest.”
When we try to look under its bottom, we again see the “orange stash” - the suspension arms. And an experienced eye will immediately notice the unusual shape of the lower arms: they are not straight, as is usually the case, but curved! Due to this bending, the distance between the wheel mounting point and the frame is increased, which in turn leads to an increase in ground clearance and, consequently, cross-country ability.
A glance from the front did not reveal... a radiator. On a standard Sportsman, like most regular civilian ATVs, it is positioned vertically and quite low, which often leads to clogging with dirt and even damage from stones or sharp branches. In the High Lifter version, the radiator was actually under the front trunk - at the top and securely covered by the frame, plastic and a two-ton winch, which is included as standard.
It is clear that such intervention cannot improve handling, but one must understand that the Sportsman High Lifter is not made for high-speed racing, but for overcoming water and mud obstacles. It is there that he should feel in his element.

Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 High Lifter Edition Review
What's so special about the Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 High Lifter Edition?
Most recently, the American company Polaris introduced the sports-utility all-terrain vehicle Sportsman XP 1000. When creating it, the engineers gave 100%: they worked on the design, handling and maneuverability, and took care of a lot of additional features. Despite its rather impressive weight, the all-terrain vehicle easily accelerated and overcame difficult obstacles. The soft suspension, powerful engine and reliable shock absorbers allowed it to drive through off-road conditions and swamps. But this was not enough for the developers - they set out to create an ATV that will overcome any dirt. This is how the new Polaris Sportsman XP1000 High Lifter Edition was born.
ENGINE | 952cc cm, turbo, 85 l. With. |
CLEARANCE | 34.3 cm |
TIRES | 29.5″ x 9.5″ Outlaw 2 |
Dimensions | 224 x 127 x 128 cm |
What's special about the XP1000 High Lifter Edition?
To create the updated Sportsman, Polaris teamed up with High Lifter, a company that has been successfully turning ATVs into mud conquerors for over 20 years. Key features of the updated version of the ATV:
- High Lifter Outlaw II tires with a diameter of 29.5x9.5" and 14" wheels. For comparison, the standard modification of the Sportsman, introduced in 2021, had wheels measuring 26-27 inches.
- Two-cylinder ProStar engine with a displacement of 952 cc. cm and a power of 85 hp. With. The motor is taken from the basic version of the Sportsman, but reconfigured for driving through swamps, puddles and mud. Among the main changes: the engine does not have an Action Descent Control system that controls descent.
- Additional water protection for the air intake and belt.
- Standard all-wheel drive . This component was completely borrowed from the basic version of the Sportsman. Since the system works on a 1:1 principle, the rear wheels of the vehicle do not lose traction before the front tires lock and slip.
- The clutch ventilation ducts and air filters are located above the steering wheel. This is necessary to protect the elements from moisture. The developers also raised the radiator, now it is located in the place of the front trunk.
- Cooling system fans are upside down. This makes the radiator easier to access and allows you to clean it at any time.
- Although all of the Sportsman's electronics were well protected from moisture, engineers decided to move the fuse box higher up. Now it is located near the radiator, which makes it easier to service.
How does a dirt ATV differ from a regular ATV?
The Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 High Lifter Edition features a rugged Extreme Duty bumper with an integrated winch capable of towing up to 3,000 pounds. The winch is installed quite high, so the rider will not get his hands dirty when using it. The rear bumper is no less powerful; it will withstand even a strong blow.
One of the most interesting features of the Sportsman XP 1000 is the grab handle located above the handlebars. It is used as a lever when the ATV needs to be pulled out of the mud. The engineers paid attention to even such a small detail as the footrests - they have holes that allow you to get rid of water.
Unique A-arms provide maximum ground clearance even on rutted surfaces. Engineers also delved into the device’s suspension. In order for the car to withstand the increased weight and adhering dirt, the developers installed stiff springs that maintain the required ground clearance. Since the ATV has new 29-inch wheels, the vertical travel of the suspension has been reduced. It is now 170 mm at the rear and 188 mm at the front.
To improve the efficiency of the rear suspension, the developers removed the anti-roll bar. The steering stops have also been upgraded. This avoided unnecessary wheel rotation and reduced rubber friction.
Since the Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 High Lifter Edition is slightly larger than its predecessor, it was equipped with larger tires. Now the dimensions of the ATV are: 223.5 cm length, 124.5 cm width, 132.1 cm height. But the key change ensuring high cross-country ability of the vehicle was an increase in ground clearance by 50 mm. The ground clearance is 34.3 cm, thanks to which the ATV can travel even on difficult off-road conditions.
All modifications have led to a significant increase in the weight of the all-terrain vehicle: the updated Polaris Sportsman XP1000 High Lifter Edition weighs 442 kg. To stop this monster, hydraulic disc brakes were installed, to activate which you need to press the pedal on the right side of the device and a special lever on the steering wheel.
With a radiator taking the place of the front rack in the XP 1000 High Lifter Edition, the rider can use the rear platform, which can withstand a load of 34 kg, to carry cargo. But don’t forget that the updated ATV, like the standard model, has a 7.6-liter trunk under the seat. Bulk and heavy loads weighing up to 680 kg can be easily towed. For this purpose, a coupling device is provided on the rear of the all-terrain vehicle.
Operating experience Polaris Sportsman XP1000 High Lifter Edition
Despite the fact that the updated Sportsman has just appeared on the market, some riders have already managed to appreciate its charms. Fans of extreme sports noted the excellent driving performance of the ATV. After modernization, the all-terrain vehicle literally breaks out of the swamp and loose mush. Thanks to a powerful engine, suspension and special tires, it confidently handles swampy terrain, off-road, loose and wet soil, and drives through deep puddles and small reservoirs.
Riders testing the Polaris Sportsman XP1000 High Lifter Edition were even able to put it on its rear wheels while conquering a muddy pond. A quadric weighing 441 kg, even in such an unusual position, easily drives through a reservoir one meter deep.
Riders also appreciated the new High Lifter Outlaw II tires. The tires provide excellent traction on both hard and soft surfaces. The all-terrain vehicle practically does not get stuck in the mud and does not slip. But if you put it on its “belly,” the driver will have to rock or push the ATV to free it from captivity.
Thanks to the unique tread pattern, Outlaw tires are ideal for driving on dirt, but also perform well on regular roads. During a trip over rough terrain or dirt roads there is almost no shaking, Polaris confidently holds the set course. And even the fact that to install large tires the developers had to reduce the vertical travel of the suspension did not in any way affect the comfort of the driver or passenger. Wheels with a diameter of 29 inches practically do not notice bumps and small holes, and the suspension copes with more serious obstacles. The model is less comfortable than the basic version of the Polaris Sportsman XP 1000, but also damps obstacles well.
There are also no problems with handling. The ATV corners confidently, even despite the absence of a stabilizer bar. At low speeds, electric power steering helps with steering. When riding, the rider feels virtually no recoil or vibration.
Bottom line
Now fans of off-road driving can independently turn their all-terrain vehicle into a mud conqueror. But modernization and components will cost a hefty sum. In addition, experienced engineers have already created an excellent ATV for dirt with excellent cross-country ability. Purchasing the Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 High Lifter Edition saves time, effort and money.
