Technical features of Outlander ATVs

The company's ATV vehicle lineup includes more than a dozen types of vehicles. They mainly differ in the number of wheels (these are either classic 4x4 all-terrain vehicles or 6x6 tourist vehicles) and engine power. Naturally, when purchasing, one cannot help but notice the presence of additional functions that directly affect traction and cross-country ability.

In the best traditions of creating professional vehicles, the manufacturer has been creating its ATVs based on the Rotax engine for several years in a row. Among the models, the buyer can choose several options, distinguished by power: 450, 570, 650 or 1000 cm3. All of them are created on different frame bases, which made it possible to divide the series into single and double models. In 2021, the Outlander ATV line includes 13 models, including the limited edition Outlander MAX 1000R Limited.

General technical parameters of the models include:

  • Rotax engine with smart air cooling system. The V-shaped piston stroke system allows for maximum power, due to which all ATVs have increased cross-country ability in complete off-road conditions.
  • The electric starter and variable transmission ensure a comfortable ride, even if this is your first time behind the wheel of an ATV vehicle.
  • Disc braking system for 4 or 6 wheels. The ability to switch driving modes on the go allows you to easily overcome steep ascents and descents without fear for the stability of the vehicle.
  • Professional shock absorbers for comfortable rides on highways and rocky terrain. Starting in 2021, most of the manufacturer's models are equipped with FOX Performance, which brings the ride comfort of the Outlander series models closer to direct competitors from Polaris.
  • Professional fuel supply and injection system. The latest generation injector allows you to save up to 20% fuel, compared with models before 2021. Now, with a full 20-liter tank (for example, in the BRP Outlander 650), you can easily cover 130–150 km with mixed driving.

In general, the Outlander series is a repeated winner of various ATV competitions in various disciplines. The model has some shortcomings, but the manufacturer corrects them with the annual update of the line. Considering the cost of a brand new ATV, the series has no analogues or direct competitors in the Russian market in terms of price-quality ratio.

Operating experience and advantages of BRP Outlander 1000 XT

The Outlander 1000 ATV has proven itself when driving off-road and on difficult trails. The owners noted that the device handles confidently on any road and can even drive through a small swamp.

Users also rated:

  • Build quality. Plastic parts can withstand even strong impacts and sudden temperature changes. A durable frame and high-quality shock absorbers make the off-road ride soft and smooth. But before operation, it is recommended to check all bolts and, if necessary, tighten them.
  • High cross-country ability. The BRP Can Am Outlander 1000R ATV is capable of driving on any off-road terrain, climbing a small hill, crossing a stream or swamp.
  • Specifications. The manufacturer stuffed the utility with first-class parts that provide high power and versatility. The vehicle can accelerate to 110 km/h and tow a load weighing 500 kg.
  • Reliability. The Canadian device can skate for several seasons without the slightest breakdown.

The only drawback of Outlander is its high cost. The device from the showroom will cost 1.5-1.6 million rubles. A used ATV can be found for 900,000-1,200,000 thousand rubles.

Reviews

  1. I am very pleased with the ATV. I took it last spring from an official dealer. I previously had other models, but this one, in my opinion, significantly surpasses them in terms of cross-country ability. Large wheels with increased lugs make their presence felt. The quad remains stable almost everywhere. I even overcame a small swamp there, and here the technology showed itself perfectly. Among the shortcomings for now I would like to mention the insufficiently tightened bolts, but this issue can be resolved quickly, the main thing is to immediately check everything after purchase.
  2. This model was recommended to me by my relatives, since many in our family like to devote their weekends to riding such machines. As a result, I purchased a used quad in very satisfactory technical condition. The car is very dynamic and controllable, which allows me to even lead in our runs. Consumption is not to say that it is large, but also not to say that it is small, rather average for such motorcycles. The model goes up and down descents confidently and quite easily, although it can be scary in places. In my opinion, this ATV is very good for free riding in different terrains.

Technical characteristics of BRP Outlander Max 800

The company's first ATV was the Outlander 400, but the device lacked the power to overcome difficult obstacles. Therefore, in 2005, the brand developed the Rotax engine, which is used in all modern BRP all-terrain vehicles. The Outlander Max 800 model is equipped with a 71 hp engine, providing excellent dynamics and high cross-country ability.

Key features of the all-terrain vehicle:

  • 800cc Rotax V-twin engine cm.
  • Liquid cooling of the engine.
  • Electronic fuel system with two injectors.
  • Electronic ignition.
  • All-wheel drive operating in 4WD and 2W modes.
  • Kick starter and electric starter.
  • Transmission – CVT variator.
  • Independent torsion bar (rear) and double wishbone (front) suspension.
  • Oil shock absorbers FOX Performance S 1.2 Podium RC 2.
  • Cast aluminum wheels.
  • Dual-circuit braking system.
  • Dynamic power steering.
  • Gas tank with a capacity of 20.5 liters. Fuel consumption depends on the route, driving style and speed. On average, the device consumes 14 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
  • The dry weight of the device is 362 kg.
  • Load capacity is 135 kg and towing capacity is 590 kg.

The package of the two-seater device includes: powerful LED lighting, two luggage racks, a durable bump stop, a winch, a trunk, a tow bar, and hand protection.

If desired, the buyer can immediately tune the device. The manufacturer offers to strengthen the luggage racks, install a winch with a remote control, install a differential lock, three-range power steering, gas shock absorbers and Carliste ATV tires. In addition to factory tuning, the buyer is recommended to bleed the brakes, since due to the heavy weight of the device, its handling suffers.

Reviews

ATVs in this series have deservedly received a lot of positive feedback from users:

“Super quadric! Outlander 400 has low fuel consumption and compact dimensions. It can fit almost everywhere, you can even ride between the trees in the forest.”

Experience in operating Outlander ATVs

Without exception, all Outlander ATVs belong to the premium class of motor vehicles. It is not surprising that positive reviews on thematic forums predominate, although a barrage of criticism can also be found. Mostly individual functional or design features are criticized and directly compared with competitors. According to experienced users and owners, most critics evaluate Outlander models subjectively, although negative opinions do exist.

If we put aside the undeniable reliability, then the main subject of discussion among owners remains the possibility of tuning motor vehicles. For owners of the Outlander ATV, the manufacturer has created dozens of various types of upgrades. Each tuning element is very popular and, according to reviews from owners, the most popular ones can be identified:

  • Lighting. More than twenty types of original lighting equipment are available to owners of all types of Outlander PDUs. Utilitarian, sports and touring models can be retrofitted with more powerful LED lamps, headlights and lenses. Additional fog lights are also available for sale, so the quality and range of light can be selected individually according to the owner’s requirements.
  • Additional protection. The eternal confrontation between the Canadian BRP and the American Polaris forced the manufacturer to create several types of additional protection. Since the Americans are leaders in the production of convenient and thoughtful models in terms of comfort, the creators of BRP decided not to give up their leading position. A full series of protective covers, plastic and metal linings have been developed that can not only protect the driver and passenger from possible injuries, but also make the trip more comfortable by changing the weight of the vehicle.
  • Body modernization. Enlarging the hull has always been a key desire of the owners. Discussions among drivers about the possibility of replacing the casing with a new one led to the fact that in 2021 the development of a full-fledged replacement body began, which differs not only in color, but also in more aggressive lines.
  • Reinforced winch. Without exception, all BRP Can Am outlanders are equipped with professional winches from Warn, but for true enthusiasts there was always not enough engine power or cable length. That is why the manufacturer makes it possible, when purchasing a vehicle from the dealership, to order additional equipment for the vehicle with a reinforced winch from the older generation model, which is capable of pulling the ATV out of the swamps, even when it is fully loaded.
  • Replaceable wheels and tires. Different models of Outlander ATVs can be sold as standard from dealers in the Russian Federation with different types of tires. For example, the true off-road X-MR series have a rougher and deeper tread pattern. Any types of wheels can be ordered from an official representative, although in addition to the classic version of disks and wheels, the manufacturer offers an original track system for driving in swamps or snow. Users liked the ability to choose the type of wheels and tires themselves, and the practice of producing several options was adopted by companies around the world.

Unfortunately, Outlander owners have problems with repairs. Due to the large number of electronics and the complexity of the equipment, not all breakdowns can be repaired independently.

Review of the Can-Am Outlander MAX 1000 LTD 2013 ATV

Our expectations were completely confirmed with this two-seater ATV.

The Can-AmOutlander MAX 1000 LTD is a powerful beast with great options, meticulous fittings and stunning exterior trim.

This car first came to the attention of professionals several months ago, in June. And the ATV lived up to all expectations. The large two-seater Outlander received only one complaint from numerous drivers who decided to break in the newcomer. We will return to the essence of this issue a little later, after discussing the new products that have adorned the car.

Four 26-inch Carlisle tires sit on 12-inch cast-aluminum wheels and spin through a liquid-cooled 975cc V-Twin with fuel injected through four massive valves per cylinder. The fuel mixture is supplied by a 46 mm throttle body with two Siemens VDO injectors - one for each piston.

Our Can-Am Outlander MAX 1000 LTD is built on a combination of solid power and luxury options.

The front suspension features double A-arms with 9 inches of vertical travel. At the rear is an independent torsion bar with 9.3 inches of travel. The ATV freezes in place when the front dual disc brakes with a diameter of 214 mm with dual hydraulic pistons are engaged. At the rear are single discs of the same diameter, supported by twin-piston calipers.

A distinctive feature of the ATV is the presence of an air compressor, which can be used for two purposes:

  • tire inflation;
  • maintaining pressure in the rear air suspension.

In the latter case, the gas flow rushes to the ACS with FOX Air Assist shock absorbers, whose task is to compensate for the weight of the passenger or luggage. It is possible to use one of six preset spring settings. And the air-controlled shock absorbers adjust on the fly.

Driving impressions

Right under the handlebars, BRP has placed its sticker, which loudly and verbosely explains that this is not an ordinary ATV. This machine has more power, in general, what is there to hide, this unit is one of the most powerful things in its class. BRP is literally passionate about safety, so the Canadian company has equipped the Outlander with two digital knobs for this option:

  • black - to bring the engine to full power;
  • gray - cuts the number of horsepower.

It is the latter that serves for everyday needs and will be activated in 95% of cases. The engine is quite strong, this was especially noticeable to our driver, who got behind the wheel straight from the Sportsman Touring 850. Only the gray handle saved him from shock and allowed him to somehow cope with this whole herd of horses. This is discussed in more detail in our review, where the mentioned models are compared head-to-head.

Just mash the throttle and the 975cc Rotax V-Twin reveals itself.

The Outlander MAX 1000 LTD rides on a 59-inch wheelbase with 11 inches of ground clearance. From the outside it may seem that the center of gravity is located too high, but this is not so. The manufacturer's stated dry weight is 816 pounds. In a fully loaded state with fuel and all liquids, according to our measurements, the vehicle weighs 434 kg. Considering the combination of weight and horsepower, the price seems reasonable to us.

The steering wheel turns in one plane, just like off-road motorcycles and mountain snowmobiles. We decided that this was done to make it more convenient to travel through the hills. This may be unnecessary, but we will mention that the handling is very similar to the Ski-Doo Freeride.

In most situations, the team enjoyed the 975cc engine on a track riddled with humps, roots, doglegs and snakes. The ATV walked briskly through tight right and rollicking left turns. As we progressed, we had to press our legs all the way back, slide along the seat to the right and left, lean on the bends of the track and control the damper as much as possible. The Polaris 900 XP LE and Maverick 1000R X were immediately tested in the race, fighting for the top place. 8 kilometers. from a lost river along roots, sand, rocks. So there you go! Both models could not beat ours. The advantage remained with Outlander all the time. In reality, this is not a sports model at all, but the stability and at the same time agility strongly resemble one.

You wouldn't think a two-seater ATV could race headlong, but our MAX 100 briskly beat the RZR XP 900 and Maverick 1000R X.

Outlander is equipped with a three-speed power steering system. With the minimum, maximum and mid settings, the driver can adjust the assist force and feedback from ground unevenness. You can completely remove tactile sensations or leave a response. This is decided by the driver himself. Maximum settings are great for slow traffic, sand and mud. Finally, the minimum mode transfers full response to the hands. This sometimes prevents excessive steering angle at high speeds.

The amplification system is equipped with magnetic sensors with fast response.

The steering wheel, instrument compartments and cockpit are ergonomic and comfortable, with excellent finishing. Below the right handle is a serif selector for each position. You can lock the lever in the desired position, which will prevent unwanted speed changes.

Whether the brakes are applied individually or in tandem, the Outlander exhibits no tendency to skid. There is no heating of the discs or calipers. The diameter of the rubbing surfaces is quite enough for fairly steep descents.

Hand shields reliably cover your hands from blows from small branches.

Garmin GPS is included by default, which is great. We were pleased with the device's comprehensive information about waypoints. The built-in camera made it possible to leave smartphones in your pockets. Downloaded maps are a great help on the road. The Montana 650t held its trajectory perfectly. We never got lost while moving from the abandoned river. I immediately thought that this was a great gadget for rescuers, for whom it is very important to arrive at the scene of an incident as quickly as possible.

The Montana 650t GPS receiver is standard on the Outlander MAX 1000 LTD.

The passenger and driver footpegs are spacious with excellent grip. The angles of the knees, shoulders, arms and legs are quite comfortable. The driver hardly gets tired. The passenger position also offers many benefits. The grip handles have several positions, and each of the testers was able to find a suitable position for themselves.

There are bumpers along the hood and tail. At the front, this equipment largely protects from impacts and grass. The rear bumper is traditionally equipped with excellent hand grips, they are used to move the ATV by hand. The exhaust pipe is located quite far from their location.

The front bumper reliably protects the nose.

There is a built-in hook on the bow that can withstand 1360 kg. The driver can control the winch from the steering wheel or remote control. Very convenient to control from the side.

Buyers can see this model on the catwalk for about $15,500. It's expensive, but also quite appropriate. A two-seater vehicle for long trips with a 975cc engine, GPS, winch, power steering, air compressor that adjusts the rear suspension, bumpers, a large rear cargo net, front storage compartment for various small items, and comfortable seats is worth the money. In addition, there are several other versions of the ATV, both cheaper and more expensive.

The passenger seat is truly comfortable.

The handles are quite safe.

As mentioned earlier, there is still one drawback. The Big Twin is simply a crucible. Like its Maverick cousin, this model gets extremely hot in the floor and seat at shin level. Sometimes I had to catch the breeze overboard with my feet to get rid of the persistent burning sensation. In general, in the hot summer this can be quite annoying. As a result, we can confidently say that we have learned to wear long trousers on board this two-seater beauty. It would be a good idea to add some insulation to what you already have to protect your feet.

Otherwise, the ATV did not present any surprises. The engine ran reliably, the finish and comfort were first class. Would we like one like this? Yes. But let BPR do something to protect your shins from the heat.

Advantages and disadvantages of the model

The device has several significant disadvantages, which were noted by all users:

  • High price. Not every buyer can afford to buy an ATV for 1.2 million rubles.
  • Heavy weight. The car climbs hills with ease, but problems arise when descending. Due to the large mass of the device it becomes practically uncontrollable. Therefore, the owner should bleed the brakes.
  • Maintainability. Original parts for the device cost a lot of money, and besides, finding spare parts is not so easy. Even if you order components from a dealer, their delivery will take several months.

However, all the disadvantages pale in comparison to the advantages. The main advantage of the device is its incredible maneuverability. The car will drive anywhere, be it mountains, swamps or small rivers. Owners will also be pleased with additional equipment: skis, tracks, etc. can be installed on the ATV. The all-terrain vehicle can also be used for clearing snow, towing cargo, and cultivating the garden.

On the market, the BRP Outlander 1000 model stands out quite strongly from its analogues due to its very wide standard equipment, which has:

  1. 30-inch tires with 3.9-centimeter lugs.
  2. Three-mode power steering, often acting as a damper.
  3. Special protective wind shields mounted on the steering wheel.
  4. High-quality and durable arch extensions.
  5. Analog-digital sensors installed on the dashboard, which also has a built-in program that diagnoses the ATV.
  6. Anti-slip footrests made of aluminum.
  7. Front and rear bumpers made of high-strength alloy.
  8. Built-in snorkel system.
  9. A special anti-theft system, which also has digital encryption of important data.

Main competitors of BRP Outlander 800

The Canadian manufacturer of PDUs is the world market leader in the production of off-road equipment. The company's machines are distinguished by their reliability, power and functionality. For example, the BRP XMR 800 can be used for transporting goods, expeditions, tourism or racing. But despite the high quality and versatility, the technology has a lot of competitors.

Instead of the Outlander 800 BRP, many buyers choose:

  • BRP Outlander 1000 XMR. This is a more massive and powerful vehicle, which is ideal for driving through swamps, mountains, mud, etc. A predatory all-terrain vehicle with a 976 cc engine. cm, equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable ride. Considering that 1000 XMR of 2021 will cost 1.6 million rubles, and the 800th model costs 1.2 million rubles, the choice is obvious.
  • Polaris Sportsman Unlike Canadian vehicles, American Polaris all-terrain vehicles are designed for a smoother and more comfortable ride. The Sportster 850 is not inferior to the Outlander in power or cross-country ability, but wins in handling and versatility. Another plus for an American is the affordable price. A new all-terrain vehicle Sportsman 850 with full equipment will cost approximately 1 million rubles.
  • CFmoto X The BRP 800 ATV also competes with the Chinese X8, created by the CFmoto brand. The all-terrain vehicle with a 63 hp engine is distinguished by its modern “filling”, cross-country ability and significant service life. The CFmoto ATV will be an excellent alternative to the expensive Outlander. The new Chinese all-terrain vehicle will cost only 620-800 thousand rubles.

Buyers who want to find a high-quality and inexpensive tourist often pay attention to domestic ATVs. Particularly popular are the Stealth Cheetah 850 and Russian Mechanics RM 800

MoscowRus197 › Blog › New beast! Can-Am BRP Outlander 1000 XMR 2015.

I want to tell you about this unique beast. But first, my indignation...

I just don’t understand why you can’t add ATVs to your garage on the website. What is prohibited by the rules is understandable. But what then to do with the huge number of quads on the site, or all-terrain vehicles... Various kinds of special equipment and even armored personnel carriers... After all, armored personnel carriers cannot be classified as a car, and for some quads they even opened the B1 category, and not shoved them into the motorcycle category, that's all there are four wheels, not two... And it would be logical to remove from the site all the equipment that is prohibited, but this has not been done, and new ones cannot be added... Although I am sure that if sections for motorcycles and other motorcycle equipment are added to the site, then the site will be of no use will only win!

In general, because You can’t add this device to your cars, so I’ll blog about its rides, modifications, tuning and much more that it will encounter in the harsh realities of Russian off-road.

Can-Am BRP Outlander 1000 XMR.

What is it. To date, this is the most powerful ATV, equipped with a V-shaped two-cylinder liter engine producing 82 horsepower. And this is 345 kg of weight! (not taking into account the pilot) When I say the most powerful, I mean the factory equipment. Of course, with tuning you can squeeze out all 150 forces and install a turbine, etc.

BRP

is
a Canadian brand
that produces ATVs, side-by-side all-terrain vehicles, jet skis, snowmobiles and spyder roadsters. And of course there is a huge amount of clothing, equipment and accessories for this technique.

Can-Am

Talks about the brand’s belonging to ATVs.
Outlander

-
this is a model.
A utilitarian option, designed primarily for off-road use.

1000

this is the displacement of the engine.
There are also 450, 500, 650 and 800 cubes.

XMR

-
this is a complete set
. The most complete and most prepared version of the ATV for tough use in any environment. The main differences from the regular off-road version are that almost all the necessary tuning for harsh conditions comes from the factory. This includes a radiator located in front of the ATV, and snorkels integrated into the radiator cap. These are reinforced external grenades of the front CV joints. These are aggressive off-road 30″ tires on 14″ wheels. And the most noticeable thing is the new coloring for 2015. Pixel winter camouflage with light green bumpers. There is also a powerful winch. Power steering with three ranges of lightness settings and much more.

But even all this factory tuning does not cover all the need for after-sales preparation of equipment for harsh realities. This is why they immediately installed a bottom protection, a trunk (there is a more beautiful one, but in the event of a coup, the beautiful trunk will fly apart, because it is very fragile. This is proven and it is not afraid of a coup. Very durable. And a towbar. This is the most necessary thing for the first time.

Future plans in order:

1. Passenger seat.
The XMR package comes with a small cabinet instead. 2. Two powerful LED lights forward and a small strip back. 3. Turn signals, signal and rear view mirrors. For moving around the city. 4. Power front bumper. 5. Road tires with wheels. Also for moving around the city. You cannot drive on standard off-road tires, because there is an increased load on the chassis, and the rubber itself will instantly wear off. Power increase: 6. Intake.
7. Direct exhaust. 8. Chip tuning. I will tell and show you everything. I also record rides on GoPro, so I’ll also post the most interesting ones. But in general, my personal attitude towards this model. There really is no better device. In terms of reliability, cross-country ability, there are no obstacles to it at all, the main thing is to approach all obstacles head-on and then any can be overcome. I've driven many models. Everyone loses to this device. True, there was a polaris 850. So it was more comfortable and the engine sound was more beautiful, like those of real American mask cars, but its CV joints constantly broke down and flew off... This is a completely different story...

It’s been a while since I made a couple of posts with photos and videos of rides. Still on the previous technology. You can watch it HERE, HERE AND HERE. MORE HERE and video HERE :)

Comparison with competitors

Buyers choosing an ATV face a difficult choice. The BRP company has released two similar series: Can Am Outlander 1000 and Renegade 1000. The devices of both lines are very similar in technical terms, but differ significantly in price. The utilitarian 1000 XT, released in 2021, costs around 1,500,000-1,600,000 rubles, and the Renegade can be ordered for only 800,000 rubles. However, the Outlander has better cross-country ability. The Renegade Sport model is not designed for rough trails or wet terrain.

The BRP Outlander 1000 ATV is also seriously competing with the Scrambler XP 1000, created by the American company Polaris. A stylish device with a predatory design, more powerful than Canadian technology. Under the hood of the American lies 89 hp, which is 7 hp more than in the 1000 XT model. The Scrambler XP 1000 has another tangible advantage - price. The Polaris device costs approximately 1,250,000-1,300,000 rubles.
