The elements of off-road. How is an ATV different from a quadricycle and other vehicles?

Before side-by-side ATVs came to market, ATV riders who wanted to share the off-road experience with a friend relied on two-seat ATV models. And while the two-seat ATV isn't as popular as it once was, that doesn't mean the segment is going away anytime soon.

First, there are still many trails that are closed to side-by-side ATVs. Even where you can legally drive these ATVs, some guys prefer to ride ATVs. Additionally, two-seater ATVs are more compact, making them easier to transport. Two-seat ATVs tend to be cheaper to buy, are more fuel efficient, and don't take up as much garage space as a side-by-side ATV.

We decided we should pay a little more attention to two-seat ATVs and look at every two-seat model currently available on the market.

Features of obtaining rights

It was mentioned above that driving any of the listed types of transport requires a license. To drive any of the vehicles listed above, you must have a B license with category AS or MS . The first implies the presence of a car steering wheel and seat (quadricycle), MS - a motorcycle steering wheel and seat (quad bike and tricycle). They were introduced in 2013 after amendments were made to the law on vehicles.

Important! Category B1 gives the right to drive a tricycle, quadricycle or quadricycle with an engine capacity of 50 cc and a weight of up to 550 kg. If the equipment has smaller parameters, then you need to get a license of category M. They allow you to drive ATVs with an engine capacity of up to 50 cubic meters and are issued from the age of 16.

If you have category B rights, then B1 is automatically assigned, marked AS. If class A rights were previously obtained, then B1 MS is assigned. If you do not have any license, you will need to complete training and pass exams, having first submitted an application and passed a medical examination to obtain a driving permit. If the license does not have the B1 mark, then you just need to contact the traffic police and ask to indicate it. You can get a license from the age of 18, but you can undergo training and pass exams from the age of 14. Then you just have to wait until you reach adulthood.

Features on this cold-weather ATV include heated grips, a heated windshield, a factory-installed 3,000-pound Warn winch, mud flaps, and low-range gearing.

Advantages and disadvantages of these models

The main advantages of lightweight ATVs are:

  • ease of maintenance and repair;
  • high cross-country ability;
  • low fuel consumption (2 times less than in utilitarian models);
  • cost (cheaper compared to heavy all-terrain vehicles).

The main advantage of lightweight ATVs is their weight. When stuck in mud, the rider can independently pull out the equipment and move it to a more even road surface, while heavy models will require a winch, cables and an additional tractor.

If we talk about disadvantages, it is worth mentioning the following:

  • worse handling (due to low weight);
  • low level of safety (when operating this vehicle, additional protection is required in the form of a helmet, gloves, elbow pads and knee pads);
  • lower engine life (compared to all-wheel drive models).

What to choose?

Having understood the differences between an ATV and a quadricycle with a tricycle, we can definitely say that the technology is completely different. Each device has its own strengths and weaknesses, so the choice of machine depends on your needs.

For lovers of speed and drive who prefer racing tracks and public roads, a tricycle . The device will give you the necessary adrenaline and energy boost. Despite its dimensions, the speed of the equipment is not inferior to many sports motorcycles.

Fans of calm and measured riding who are not chasing speed should pay attention to the quadricycle . Compact and maneuverable equipment fits perfectly into city traffic and allows you to drive almost anywhere. A tangible advantage of the car is a kind of roof that will protect the driver from dust and light rain.

The appearance of the all-terrain vehicle hints at off-road driving and high power. An ATV is a real workhorse , with which you can not only transport cargo, but also go fishing. The only drawback of the technology is the restriction on the use of ATVs on public roads. But given the cross-country ability of the car, this will not be a problem.

In Europe [edit | edit code]

In Europe, the category of quadricycles was introduced primarily in order to legally separate microcars and sidecars, which have historically enjoyed significant benefits in most European countries, from “full-fledged” cars. The UNECE has established two categories of quadricycles [7] [8]:

  • L6e - Light quadricycles
    , four-wheeled vehicles with:
  • curb weight does not exceed 350 kg, excluding the weight of batteries for electric vehicles,
  • speed does not exceed 45 km/h,
  • the engine displacement does not exceed 50 cm³ in the case of an internal combustion engine with forced (spark) ignition,
  • or the maximum engine power does not exceed 4 kW for other types of internal combustion engines (for example, diesel engines),
  • or the maximum engine power during long-term operation does not exceed 4 kW for an electric motor;

L7e - quadricycles ,
or otherwise - heavy quadricycles
-
fully comply with the definition of a quadricycle accepted in Russia, must meet the requirements for vehicles of category L5e (tricycles).

Previously, vehicles of these categories were equated to mopeds, which was confirmed by UNECE Directive 92/61/EEC of 1992. Directive 2002/24/EC from 2002 introduced for the first time the division of quadricycles into light and heavy. Finally, Directive 2006/126 prescribed a uniform procedure for issuing driver’s licenses for driving vehicles of the “light quadricycle” category for all EU countries and recommended a minimum age for driving them, set at 16 years.
