BRP Outlander 800 is an ATV developed by a Canadian company for outdoor activities and tourism. The first model of the device appeared in 2007 and was equipped with a 62 hp engine, a winch, independent suspension and a tank with a capacity of 20 liters. The technique has proven itself to be a reliable, but restive horse. At high speeds, the rider had to constantly maintain course, which negatively affected comfort.
However, a number of shortcomings did not stop the company from further developing the device. Over the course of 10 years, the Canadian brand has released 8 more modifications of the all-terrain vehicle, differing in both configuration and technical characteristics.
Based on the BRP 800, a model was created:
- Outlander 800 XT. The car was presented at the end of 2007. The equipment is equipped with a V-shaped engine with a volume of 800 cc. cm, electric starter, independent suspension, disc brakes and a gas tank with a capacity of 20 liters. The device differed from the base model only in its configuration.
- BRP 800 MAX. Overall, this is a base model with an extended body kit. In technical terms, the devices are no different. An interesting feature of the ATV is its flexible configuration. In new versions of the device, the buyer can choose a single or double seat, the number of trunks, a backrest, etc.
- Outlander Max 800 XT. The equipment differs from the regular 800 model in its expanded configuration. The delivery set includes a seat with a backrest, a powerful bump stop, mirrors, etc. The car is ideal for tourism and driving on difficult routes: wetlands, mud, small streams, clay, snow, sand.
Other models, such as BRP 800 R, 800 HO EFI LTD, 800 Max XT LTD and 800 R Max XT, differ only in the scope of delivery and minor design changes. More noticeable modifications are observed only in the BRP 800 XMR ATV. The car has a 71 hp engine, a 16.3 liter gas tank, an EFI electronic fuel supply system, tires for heavy off-road driving, an automatic transmission, etc.

The humorous comparison between an ATV and a swamp vehicle arose naturally—it’s enough to take a look at the Outlander to understand: it was created to handle the heaviest off-road conditions without leaving a trace.
An interesting feature is surprisingly similar between the Ishimbay “elephant” and the Canadian “ant” - positive buoyancy. Both the ATV and the swamp vehicle do not sink in water when externally loaded: the Vityaz rollers and Can-Am wheels work as floats.

The BRP Outlander Max 800 is a full-fledged two-seat ATV with large cargo capabilities and easy transformation into a single-seat sports model. The Canadian handsome man is always ready to share the joy of a trip for two. And its original design will not leave anyone indifferent.

But we still don’t have a “combat leaflet,” so we’ll concentrate on civilian equipment.
In a quad, the power flow is filtered by a variator with the already familiar engine braking function, then, through the transfer case, it is transmitted by shafts to the axles. Here the Canadian engineers showed off their hearts - the distribution of torque is handled by the clever Visco-Lok system, which in all-wheel drive mode automatically connects the front wheels when necessary, and also makes the front differential work like a viscous coupling: the greater the difference in the speed of rotation of the front wheels, the more torque falls on the “slow” wheel.

The left steering column seems to be overloaded with buttons.
But it only seems so. The left steering column seems to be overloaded with buttons. But it only seems so.
The brakes are also inseparable from the transmission: the front discs are located near the gearbox, and not at the wheels. For what? Firstly, the unsprung weight is lower, and secondly, the brake mechanisms are less exposed to water and dirt. And at the back, one disc is enough for both wheels - there is no differential. It takes a while to get used to the operation of the brake force distribution system: on the right handlebar there is nothing except the gas lever! The hydraulic circuits are combined, and it doesn’t matter which control you act on: when you press both the pedal and the brake lever under your left hand, all wheels are braked. Perhaps those who like to rock out will wrinkle their noses mockingly, but wait, gentlemen, the large engine capacity and “smart” transmission never classify the Outlander as a sports car. So, by utilitarian standards, this brake arrangement can be considered optimal.

The right handle does not have the usual brake lever.
Honestly, it’s never been uncomfortable. The right handle does not have the usual brake lever. Honestly, it’s never been uncomfortable.
The suspension is simple and perfect: rear independent TTI on two diagonal torsion bars (almost like the Vityaz - its torsion bars are straight) and the front on double A-arms. If the front is a stronghold of authenticity, then the main advantage of the rear is simplicity: two wheels, two levers and two hinges, and those are at the top of the frame. Class! Only the “but” again intrusively climbs from the stalls onto the stage. The “but” is that with the usual design of the rear suspension of heavy ATVs on A-shaped arms, the axle shaft, CV joints and boots are protected on all sides by the arms from stumps and branches. Here they are open to all snags and hummocks. Yes, BRP engineers made the CV joint boots from elastic polypropylene, not rubber. Yes, it’s great, it’s stronger, but believe me, spruce hemp can tear rubber like plastic. It’s good that you can install a tuning set of aluminum shields (instead of the standard plastic ones) on the anthers and “belly” of the quad. Although, to be honest, on a car of this level with a price tag of 25 kilobucks, it would not be a sin to see them in the basic configuration.
Advantages and disadvantages of the model
The device has several significant disadvantages, which were noted by all users:
- High price. Not every buyer can afford to buy an ATV for 1.2 million rubles.
- Heavy weight. The car climbs hills with ease, but problems arise when descending. Due to the large mass of the device it becomes practically uncontrollable. Therefore, the owner should bleed the brakes.
- Maintainability. Original parts for the device cost a lot of money, and besides, finding spare parts is not so easy. Even if you order components from a dealer, their delivery will take several months.
However, all the disadvantages pale in comparison to the advantages. The main advantage of the device is its incredible maneuverability. The car will drive anywhere, be it mountains, swamps or small rivers. Owners will also be pleased with additional equipment: skis, tracks, etc. can be installed on the ATV. The all-terrain vehicle can also be used for clearing snow, towing cargo, and cultivating the garden.

The tidy is very informative and, importantly, is well protected from water, dust and shock.
The tidy is very informative and, importantly, is well protected from water, dust and shock.
What has always alarmed me about ATVs, snowmobiles and other off-road conquerors is the contrast between the sophisticated technical solutions of the main components and assemblies, such as injection engines, abstruse transmissions, suspensions with all conceivable and inconceivable adjustments, LCD instrumentation, and, finally, primitive ignition switches . Quite toy keys work in tandem with frail locks, which are easier for thieves to break than seeds. But here I am calm for the nerves and wallets of future owners - the dead-looking key contains an electronic anti-theft chip DESS (Digital Electronic Security System), without which, no matter how hard you want, the “brains” will not allow you to start the engine.
Estimated cost
The modern all-terrain vehicle Bombardier Outlander Max 800 XT-P, released in 2015, costs from $21,000 to $22,000.
A last year model with a mileage of 1,000 km, in excellent condition, already costs $15,000-16,000.
Considering the reliability of such machines, it’s not at all scary to wait another year or two and buy a used model for much cheaper.
The BRP Maverick 1000 Turbo ATV is unusual not only for its technical characteristics, but also for its real field capabilities.
This ATV is compact and handles well, which should appeal to outdoor enthusiasts:

And it looks and pulls monumentally.
Although what else can you expect from an 800 cc V-twin? And it looks and pulls monumentally. Although what else can you expect from an 800 cc V-twin?
And since we’re talking about electrics, it’s worth mentioning a power mount for a GPS navigator, powerful headlights, an informative but compact LCD instrument panel and a powerful winch with dual controls (a button on the steering wheel and a remote control on a three-meter wire).
On the move, the quad turned out to be not at all a stupid, utilitarian “felt boot”, as I expected, but quite a playful and controllable machine. But he doesn’t blur or distort the line between extreme and lawlessness—it doesn’t let you forget. But, believe me, you can get no less pleasure from a heavy utility vehicle than from a light sports 450. And this pleasure is not at all driving and adrenaline, no, the thrill of such cars is that they allow you to drive comfortably where the devil breaks your leg. Not to drive, but to ride, and also to carry a passenger and (or) a bunch of all sorts of useful things on the racks and in the trailer.
Model description
It is very difficult to describe the model in a nutshell.
This unit has excellent control parameters , so even a child can handle it (at low speeds, of course).
The appearance of the ATV strongly resembles something unearthly, like a lunar rover.
Due to the wide and large wheels, the all-terrain vehicle inspires confidence . The design of Canadian developers is also very impressive, because all parts of the body, even in the event of a possible fall, are hidden by shields.
Safety and ergonomics are already a lot for an ATV.
It is also interesting that the rear seat can be replaced with a spacious trunk, if you like to travel alone on your horse.
In the first versions of the model range, it was possible to immediately select the number of seats, but too many people preferred two-seater configurations.
Regarding maneuverability: the power of the ATV has increased and therefore hills/unevenness are a simple misunderstanding for the Bombardier Outlander Max 800 XT-P.
It climbs up very easily , but when you slide down on such a bandura, you feel uneasy.
Naturally, this is absolutely safe, but due to the fact that such weight is attached to acceleration , the driver may lose composure at first.
The reliability of BRP is not subject to debate, because it uses 2nd generation spatial beam technology.
This is practically a guarantee of safety, and this design looks very stylish .
On such an iron horse you will happily go hunting, to the mountains, or even just for a walk.
Even work in the country becomes something unusual.
The Stels 600 Leopard ATV is a utilitarian model that allows you to travel on roads with different surfaces and off-road.
This ATV from Stealth became famous even before its appearance.

The rear suspension is as simple as a meat grinder, but leaves the CV joint boots practically defenseless.
The rear suspension is as simple as a meat grinder, but leaves the CV joint boots practically defenseless.
The dynamics by the standards of utilitarian cars are at the highest level, the engine follows the gas lever without lagging behind, instantly reacting to the movement of the thumb. But at some point it seemed to me that the engine’s potential was not being fully used: the power unit, which has excellent traction at low speeds, is constantly twisting - the variator asks for a little heavier weights, they will allow the V-twin’s locomotive torque to be used more fully. And this will also reduce gasoline consumption. Will we lose in the deadlift? Maybe. What then is the use of “lowering”?
The braking dynamics are no worse than the acceleration dynamics; sometimes you don’t even need to press the brake - the variator “holds” the connection between the crankshaft and the wheels.

Handling at speed is simply excellent. Even taking into account the fact that there are no anti-roll bars, roll in corners does not cause even a hint of discomfort. But standing still, it’s hard to turn the steering wheel. Not to mention what it feels like when you try to steer out of a rut or windbreak. I can do 12 pull-ups and don't carry a weight in my pocket to keep it from getting blown away by the wind, but once I've tasted the joys of electric power steering on a Yamaha Grizzly, I can't forget it. Such a device would be perfect for Can-Am too.
As I already said, the quad does not sink. No, of course, it’s stupid to use it instead of a life jacket, but by itself it won’t give in to the swamp without a fight, the main thing is not to flood the air intake, and if you turn off the engine, the exhaust. But it’s hard to think of a swamp that the “Canadian” won’t overcome - even sitting on his belly and spinning his wheels in vain, he, like Munchausen, will pull himself out of an ambush - not by his hair, however, but by the cable of a mighty winch.
I love heavy cars for their steadfastness, in other words, for the force of resting inertia, which forces the suspensions to give their all, and also gives the “carcass” a smooth ride and the absence of jerks and strong shaking. The coordinated work of all units, components, materials, molecules, atoms, electrons and quarks of the ATV does not make you particularly strain when driving - everything happens easily and naturally, as in a large SUV with an automatic transmission and a bunch of stabilization systems. You drive and enjoy the confident smoothness and delight of the passenger; you don’t want to drive, jump, or get into a swamp up to your ears (although I got in a couple of times just for fun - the pig will find mud). If we draw analogies with motorcycles, Can-Am looks like a big cruiser. Smooth but fast, heavy but relatively easy to handle. Allowing you to relax, look around and take a ride into the forest with your girlfriend. It’s a pity that driving the domestic Vityaz is much less enjoyable.
Main competitors of BRP Outlander 800
The Canadian manufacturer of PDUs is the world market leader in the production of off-road equipment. The company's machines are distinguished by their reliability, power and functionality. For example, the BRP XMR 800 can be used for transporting goods, expeditions, tourism or racing. But despite the high quality and versatility, the technology has a lot of competitors.
Instead of the Outlander 800 BRP, many buyers choose:
- BRP Outlander 1000 XMR. This is a more massive and powerful vehicle, which is ideal for driving through swamps, mountains, mud, etc. A predatory all-terrain vehicle with a 976 cc engine. cm, equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable ride. Considering that 1000 XMR of 2021 will cost 1.6 million rubles, and the 800th model costs 1.2 million rubles, the choice is obvious.
- Polaris Sportsman Unlike Canadian vehicles, American Polaris all-terrain vehicles are designed for a smoother and more comfortable ride. The Sportster 850 is not inferior to the Outlander in power or cross-country ability, but wins in handling and versatility. Another plus for an American is the affordable price. A new all-terrain vehicle Sportsman 850 with full equipment will cost approximately 1 million rubles.
- CFmoto X The BRP 800 ATV also competes with the Chinese X8, created by the CFmoto brand. The all-terrain vehicle with a 63 hp engine is distinguished by its modern “filling”, cross-country ability and significant service life. The CFmoto ATV will be an excellent alternative to the expensive Outlander. The new Chinese all-terrain vehicle will cost only 620-800 thousand rubles.
Buyers who want to find a high-quality and inexpensive tourist often pay attention to domestic ATVs. Particularly popular are the Stealth Cheetah 850 and the Russian Mechanics RM 800.
