2009 Can-Am Outlander MAX 800R EFI XT ATV Review

The Canadian company Bombardier is one of the most popular and reliable manufacturers of ATV vehicles. The undoubted sales leader of the manufacturer and the most popular motor vehicle can be considered the entire line of Outlander ATVs. Can Am Outlander has repeatedly won honorary titles as the most popular ATVs and was the official vehicle of the Olympic Games in America.

Almost all Outlander ATVs are available in at least several trim levels:

  • XT.
  • XT-P.
  • Basic.
  • X-MR.

Regardless of configuration and engine power, all models are also divided into utilitarian, sports and touring ATVs. The manufacturer has produced more than 20 series of ATVs throughout its history, but it was the BRP Outlander that was most loved by users, so in recent years mass production has been growing around these models.

Most models with different engine power are updated annually, and as practice has shown, the 2018 Outlander is insignificant, but different from the more recent version. In the fight against direct competitors, designers and engineers work for the client, trying to diversify the series, giving it new shades in appearance and technical equipment.

The key features of the mr product series are performance, precision engineering and a comfortable, driver-centric design. These are the most affordable ATVs. The manufacturer guarantees them for 5 years, without mileage restrictions.

efi products models are equipped with a special liquid-cooled engine. It has 48 hp, 1 four-stroke cylinder. For mud machines the power is 38 hp, for hunters – 46 hp. The gearbox has no steps and controls both engines. To continuously supply clean air to the engine, the air intake with 2 chambers is raised higher than necessary.

The models have a special frame. It does not have traditional tubular parts, so this chassis is more efficient. It is distinguished by a low center of gravity, fewer components and welding seams. Lightweight materials improve vehicle handling.

At the corners of the suspension are shock absorbers that have 5-position preload adjustment. Vertical travel is 228 mm at the front and 223 mm at the rear. The double A-arm suspension prevents squat under braking for excellent cornering control. The rear independent suspension is equipped with trailing arms and allows the wheels to turn up and down vertically. All 4 suspension angles are adjustable.

Standard models include:

  • front differential;
  • Automatic blocking;
  • 214 mm disc brakes front and rear;
  • steel wheels with a diameter of 12 inches;
  • Carlisle tires;
  • steel luggage racks with a loading capacity of 163 kg;
  • multifunctional digital instrument panel.

The ground clearance is 267 mm, the magneto power is 400 W, the gas tank holds 20.5 liters, and the towing force is 590 kg. For a small surcharge you can get 3-mode dynamic power steering, a front differential with 500-W magnetopower and 12-inch alloy wheels made of aluminum.

2009 Can-Am Outlander MAX 800R EFI XT ATV Review

Top class two-seater quad bike

Can-Am continues to improve its Outlander line of ATVs. New features for the 2009 Outlander MAX 800R EFI XT include increased power, a redesigned steering system and a skid plate to protect the underbody from heavy impacts.

Ergonomics

Getting behind the wheel of the Outlander MAX, even if there are already passengers sitting in the back, is very comfortable and easy. The seat is comfortable, and the distance to the steering wheel and footpegs is exactly what you need. The second seat is positioned slightly higher, as are the grab handles and footrests for the passenger, allowing the passenger to sit and move without any difficulty without disturbing the driver. We've ridden many Can-Am two-seat models, attracting riders of varying heights, and never heard anyone complain about a cramped seating position.

Like most ATVs in its class, the Outlander is equipped with an excellent instrument panel with a digital speedometer and tachometer dial. The instrument panel also features a fuel gauge, gear indicator, four-wheel drive indicator light, and several engine status warning lights. The odometer, two trip meters, hour meter and digital tachometer can be switched by pressing a small black button. To prevent the battery from draining if the driver leaves the key, the Outlander has an automatic shut-off system that turns off all electrics after 15 minutes of inactivity.

The ignition key, located to the right of the dashboard, is part of the digital anti-theft system. The engine will not start unless this key is inserted and a duplicate key can only be purchased from a Can-Am dealer upon presentation of identification. The idea is good, but not cheap at all. On the right side of the steering wheel there is a thumb throttle trigger and a toggle switch for switching the 2WD/4WD drive. On the left of the steering wheel there is a brake control lever on all four wheels. The same lever can be used to apply the parking brake.

Transmission

This 800cc V-Twin engine produces an impressive 71 horsepower.

Powering the Outlander is a reworked and great-sounding version of the Rotax twin-cylinder V-engine: 800cc, single overhead cam (SOHC), 8 valves. It is fed by two injectors that provide fuel injection in the throttle body; they are 10% more economical and at the same time provide

more power compared to the previous model. Based on Can-Am's claims, the Outlander 800 produces an impressive 71 horsepower. It may seem that such a powerful ATV is hardly really needed, but once you ride along high mountain roads in a 30-centimeter layer of snow, you realize that the power of this 800 cc engine is very useful. This reserve of power is always at the driver's disposal, but, of course, you don't need to always squeeze the gas to the stop if you're just riding at cruising speed.

The continuously variable automatic transmission has high and low gears, neutral, reverse and a parking brake. There are two drive modes: two-wheel drive (2WD) and four-wheel drive (4WD). When all-wheel drive is activated, the Visco-Lok front differential quickly senses wheel slip and engages the limited slip differential. Previously, the technology was often criticized for the fact that the front differential was not locked effectively enough to ensure that the front wheels confidently held traction when needed, but the new system works at least as well as its analogues. In any case, the ability to choose between drive modes and a full locking front differential is very pleasing.

Chassis

The Outlander frame is unique and unlike any ATV frame on the market. The design is called Surrounding Spar Technology and is essentially one large frame frame with one center. This system not only centers the weight of the ATV well, but also acts as a full-length skid plate. In the past, the center rail was prone to dents, but on the 2009 model it's protected by an additional plastic plate.

Torsion bar independent trailing arm suspension is a new design in Can-Am's arsenal.

Another innovation is Can-Am's independent torsion bar rear suspension on trailing arms. It consists of a pair of trailing arms mounted on an anti-roll bar. This arrangement ensures perfectly smooth movement of the tires, and the ATV does not pull to the side. This is one of the best rear suspensions we've seen, and it's surprising that no other manufacturer has switched to this system.

The front suspension is more conventional - a double A-arm design; The upper arm is made of aluminum. The design for the 2009 model has been slightly redesigned to make the steering a little lighter, especially when going downhill with a passenger on board. Suspension travel at the front is 203 millimeters; rear suspension travel is 228 millimeters. Both front and rear have shock absorbers with five-position preload adjustment.

Up front, the Outlander MAX features dual A-arms.

The braking system consists of two internal discs at the front and one disc at the rear, controlled by a single lever on the handlebars or a foot pedal on the right footrest. This installation of discs reduces unsprung weight and, as a result, improves the handling of the Outlander. Owners and even manufacturers of utility ATVs often do not understand how much unsprung weight affects the behavior of the machine. The less weight that is not supported by the suspension (hence the term "unsprung weight"), the faster the ATV responds to commands.

Center of gravity is another important factor. The lower it is located, the more stable the ATV will be when cornering and off-road. Another Outlander feature that has a positive effect on handling and stability is the installation of a 20-liter gas tank behind the seat.

Practicality The cargo racks on the Outlander are some of the best around. The front can withstand up to 45 kilograms, the rear - up to 90 kg. Under the rear trunk there is a sealed luggage compartment with a volume of 20 liters.

This convenient luggage compartment is located under the rear luggage rack.

With the second seat installed, the rear trunk looks quite compact, but instead of a seat, you can install an additional container there. That's the beauty of the Outlander MAX. With the passenger seat installed, the ATV can easily carry a second person on board, who, moreover, will not interfere with the driver and influence the behavior of the car. What's more, its longer wheelbase and length make the Outlander much more stable than other single-seat models.

Conclusion

Two-seater ATVs are good for their versatility. When necessary, you can easily take someone with you on the road. And if you ride alone, the increased wheelbase still makes the ATV more stable and more confident on the road.

The Can Am Outlander MAX XT 800R is undoubtedly one of the best two-person ATVs we've tested. The 800 cc V-Twin engine pleases with its power and roars to the ear. Unfortunately, the engine can get so hot that it’s quite difficult to ride at above-zero temperatures.

Unlike other ATVs, even sportier ones, the latest racing technology is applied to every aspect of the machine, including a new unique frame, excellent lightweight suspension and brakes. It all works great, but the brake lever doesn't feel very good, and the rear pedal doesn't feel good at all. We also noticed that the ignition key is very difficult to reach when the steering wheel is turned to the right.

Outlander MAX

This ATV can accommodate 2 people – a driver and a passenger. It can be easily converted from a single-seater to a two-seater. The passenger seat has a backrest, it bends smoothly, it is quite large, and vibration is reduced due to the latch lock. Due to the tilt of the backrest, the passenger experiences minimal kickback during acceleration or steep ascent. Models are sold with or without dynamic power steering.

The rear passenger handrail is installed at an angle and bends when driving to reduce the load and impact on the hands. The latter can be placed in different ways due to the special design of the handrails. When riding alone, the rear seat with handles does not restrict space in the luggage rack and does not interfere with the driver. All parameters (depth, angles of footrests) are designed for a passenger sitting in the back. Therefore, there will be no discomfort while driving.

Technical features of Outlander ATVs

The company's ATV vehicle lineup includes more than a dozen types of vehicles. They mainly differ in the number of wheels (these are either classic 4x4 all-terrain vehicles or 6x6 tourist vehicles) and engine power. Naturally, when purchasing, one cannot help but notice the presence of additional functions that directly affect traction and cross-country ability.

In the best traditions of creating professional vehicles, the manufacturer has been creating its ATVs based on the Rotax engine for several years in a row. Among the models, the buyer can choose several options, distinguished by power: 450, 570, 650 or 1000 cm3. All of them are created on different frame bases, which made it possible to divide the series into single and double models. In 2021, the Outlander ATV line includes 13 models, including the limited edition Outlander MAX 1000R Limited.

General technical parameters of the models include:

  • Rotax engine with smart air cooling system. The V-shaped piston stroke system allows for maximum power, due to which all ATVs have increased cross-country ability in complete off-road conditions.
  • The electric starter and variable transmission ensure a comfortable ride, even if this is your first time behind the wheel of an ATV vehicle.
  • Disc braking system for 4 or 6 wheels. The ability to switch driving modes on the go allows you to easily overcome steep ascents and descents without fear for the stability of the vehicle.
  • Professional shock absorbers for comfortable rides on highways and rocky terrain. Starting in 2021, most of the manufacturer's models are equipped with FOX Performance, which brings the ride comfort of the Outlander series models closer to direct competitors from Polaris.
  • Professional fuel supply and injection system. The latest generation injector allows you to save up to 20% fuel, compared with models before 2021. Now, with a full 20-liter tank (for example, in the BRP Outlander 650), you can easily cover 130–150 km with mixed driving.

In general, the Outlander series is a repeated winner of various ATV competitions in various disciplines. The model has some shortcomings, but the manufacturer corrects them with the annual update of the line. Considering the cost of a brand new ATV, the series has no analogues or direct competitors in the Russian market in terms of price-quality ratio.
