BMW F 750 GS: “not enough” or the new gold standard for mid-sized enduro? Forced march to Sochi

BMW F 750 GS: “not enough” or the new gold standard for mid-sized enduro? Forced march to Sochi

BMW has so many varieties of “geese” alone (this is the line of GS series motorcycles) that it’s impossible to figure it out without a glass of schnapps. For example, the fresh F 750 GS model turned out to be not just another “underdog” for those who don’t have enough for the flagship R 1200 GS, but a completely independent combat unit - and, moreover, a golden mean!

The class of medium-sized touring enduros was mastered by BMW Motorrad back in 1993, when the F650 Funduro model with an Austrian Rotax engine appeared - a universal and inexpensive machine for any conditions. So is the F 750 GS - naturally, adjusted to modern realities.

Not a motorcycle, but a construction set! Ergonomics of the driver's seat? Which one do you like? The seat height varies from 770 to 830 mm, and if this is not enough, you can order an option with a lowered suspension. It's the same story with the package. Does the dashboard layout and two-way quickshifter seem like overkill? Just choose the basic version with the old-fashioned dial alarm clock.

This is the best dashboard! Graphics, information content... And competently Russified software

Even ABS in two versions - regular or in the Pro version, the so-called corner ABS, which works more subtly when the motorcycle is tilted. The same story with engine modes. Which, by the way, is supplied to the assembly line in Germany from China.

The left remote control seems overloaded at first, but you quickly get used to it: everything here is extremely logical and understandable

Moreover, the engine capacity here is not 750 cc, as one might assume, but the same as in the older brother F 850 GS - there is an in-line 853 cc “two”. It is considerably derated: 77 hp. versus 95 hp with my older sister. The leitmotif is painfully familiar: the best torque at low and medium speeds, total friendliness and equality, recognition of transgender people and same-sex marriage... Hey, bring back eighteen “horses”, it’s not hard for me to turn the tachometer another thousand revolutions, I’m not in a truck, in Eventually! But no - peace, friendship, bubble gum.

Double-sided quickshifter on a mid-sized enduro? Of course yes! You get used to good things quickly

And a crooked misunderstanding, more like a piece of bikini, which BMW for some reason considers a windshield: if you want normal wind protection, pay extra, bitte!

This piece of glass does a good job of protecting… the dashboard. But the dealer will be happy to offer you an alternative

True, this is rather normal for a city motorcycle, and the 750 is a pure crossover, starting with a 19-inch front wheel and ending with very moderate suspension travel (151 and 177 mm for the fork and monoshock).

The monoshock absorber is electronically adjustable, but this is a privilege of expensive versions

But I decided not to get stuck in Moscow traffic jams, but to make a forced march to Sochi. A day there, a couple of days to explore the landscape of the Absheron region - and a one-day return. Total 4500 kilometers in four days.

New BMW F 750 GS and F 850 GS.

Since their debut in 2007, the GS F Series models have represented adventure motorcycles in the mid-price segment and offer maximum riding pleasure in traditional BMW Motorrad style. As before, the GS acronym on the motorcycle stands for the ideal combination of long-distance touring and sporty dynamics with excellent off-road performance. After 10 years of consistent development, BMW Motorrad has completely redesigned the mid-range GS models with the aim of creating the ideal vehicle, even easier to drive and hassle-free to use. The new products will be demonstrated for the first time in Russia at the 6th international exhibition “Motospring 2018”, which will be held on March 16-18 in Moscow at the Olimpiysky Sports Complex.

The new F 750 GS and F 850 GS are even more tailored to the needs of the target audience than their predecessors. The F 750 GS is designed for all riders who prefer the look and concept of an enduro touring bike, a low seat height, impressive power and high quality at a reasonable price. The F 850 GS, meanwhile, offers even more power and torque and features even more enduro touring characteristics combined with superb off-road performance.

Powerful, new twin-cylinder engine with dual balancer shafts and 270/450 degree firing intervals for smoother operation and more emotional sound.

As before, the heart of the new F 750 GS and F 850 GS is a completely new in-line two-cylinder engine. During the development process, the designers pursued two goals: a significant increase in power and torque, as well as optimization of fuel combustion to reduce consumption.

The creators achieved a powerful and emotionally rich sound using a crankshaft with 90-degree journals and 270/450-degree flash intervals (previous models had a flat crankshaft and 360-degree flash intervals). This change is accompanied by a particularly powerful and emotional exhaust sound, similar to that of a 90-degree V2 engine. Unwanted vibrations are balanced by the new engine's two balancer shafts.

To reduce mechanical losses and ensure maximum reliability even in difficult off-road conditions, the F 750 GS and F 850 GS engines feature a dry sump lubrication system that does not require a separate oil tank. All oil coming from the main bearings then enters a special channel isolated from the crankcase.

The slipper clutch provides a significant reduction in clutch lever pull and reduces engine braking torque, increasing safety when downshifting. Power to the rear wheel is transmitted through a six-speed gearbox and chain drive, which is now located on the left side of the motorcycle. For quick, clutch-free gear changes, BMW Motorrad offers the Pro quickshifter as an option.

The engine capacity of the F 750 GS and F 850 GS is now 853 cc. cm (compared to 798 cc in previous models), with a cylinder diameter of 84 mm and a piston stroke of 77 mm. The new F 750 GS offers impressive power and torque: 77 hp/7500 rpm and maximum torque of 83 Nm/6000 rpm. The engine in the new F 850 GS develops 95 hp/8250 rpm and a maximum torque of 92 Nm/6250 rpm. The F 750 GS can accelerate to 190 km/h, while the F 850 GS can exceed 200 km/h.

The "Road" and "Rain" driving modes, plus ABS and ASC, enhance driving pleasure and safety. Pro driving modes are available as an option.

The new GS models cater to the driver's individual needs and offer a choice of "Rain" and "Road" driving modes, while ASC and the latest ABS ensure a high level of safety.

The F 750 GS and F 850 GS models can also be equipped from the factory with Pro riding modes: "Dynamic", "Enduro" and "Enduro Pro" (the latter only available on the F 850 GS), DTC Dynamic Traction Control and ABS Pro with optional lean braking.

Newly developed suspension and bridge-type frame made from deep-drawn steel elements for increased rigidity, reliability and handling precision.

The suspension of the new GS F Series models is also a completely new concept. Despite the fact that previous models have already impressed drivers with high precision and ease of control, stability at speed, designers still give priority to optimizing these characteristics.

The bridge-type frame was created specifically for the new F 750 GS and F 850 GS: it consists of welded parts made from deep-drawn steel sheets, with the two-cylinder in-line engine serving as the supporting element of the structure. Unlike previous models with tubular steel frames, the innovative new frame features a monocoque design for improved torsional rigidity.

Conceptually, the new frame also involves moving the fuel tank. While the fuel tank in previous models was located under the seat, the 15-liter tank in the new F 750 GS and F 850 GS is located between the seat and steering column. This decision is due to the optimization of the load on the front wheel, the position of the center of gravity and the overall layout of the vehicle. In addition, thanks to this change, it was possible to make the rear of the motorcycle narrower, while simultaneously optimizing the luggage compartment under the seat.

The new F 750 GS and F 850 GS models also have optimized suspension geometry. Precision, handling and ride stability are improved thanks to new key suspension geometries.

The front suspension on the F 750 GS features a new, more flex-resistant telescopic fork with a 41 mm diameter stay. The F 850 GS is equipped with an inverted telescopic fork with a tube diameter of 43 millimeters. Compared to previous models, the new telescopic fork has improved responsiveness. Working x front suspension F 750 GS – 151 mm (131 mm in the lowered version). To meet the more demanding demands of off-road use, the F 850 GS has 204 mm of front suspension travel (184 mm on the lowered version). The sensitive fork stays are protected from stones by plastic shields integrated into the front fender. The rear wheel suspension consists of a double wishbone aluminum swingarm with a monoshock absorber.

Powerful braking system with BMW Motorrad ABS as standard. Driving modes Pro, ABS Pro and dynamic brake light for even greater braking safety.

Dual disc brakes on the front wheel with a diameter of 305 mm discs and two-piston floating calipers provide maximum and reliable deceleration. The rear disc brake consists of a 265 mm disc and a single-piston floating caliper. Like all BMW motorcycles designed for the road, the new F 750 GS and F 850 are equipped as standard with BMW Motorrad's ABS system, which can be deactivated by the driver if desired (eg in off-road conditions).

ABS Pro is a step above conventional BMW Motorrad ABS and offers increased safety when braking in corners. ABS Pro prevents wheel locking even during hard braking and provides greater stability not only on a straight line, but also in corners.

Optimized ergonomics and different seat heights.

The new F 750 GS and F 850 GS models have generous suspension travel and high ground clearance as standard for enduro. However, not only tall riders will feel comfortable on these motorcycles.

With a standard seat height of 815 mm, the new F 750 GS is at the same level as previous models, while the standard seat height of the F 850 GS is lowered by 20 mm to 860 mm. By lowering the seat height (factory option), it is possible to achieve a minimum seat height of 770 mm on the F 750 GS and 815 mm on the F 850 GS.

Connectivity is a multifunctional instrument panel with a 6.5-inch full-color TFT display and a wide range of capabilities, available as a factory option.

The F 750 GS and F 850 GS feature a completely new instrument panel design consisting of an analogue speedometer and multifunction display along with indicator lamps.

Even faster, driver-friendly access to information with minimal distraction from what's happening on the road is now a reality thanks to the new optional Connectivity equipment, which features a 6.5-inch full-color TFT instrument panel. Together with the BMW Motorrad Multi-Controller, this option gives the driver quick access to vehicle and communication functions.

Making calls or listening to music on the go has never been easier. For example, the driver can link his phone and a helmet equipped with the BMW Motorrad communication system using the TFT display and easily access the playback system and phone functions. In addition, the free BMW Motorrad Connected app provides practical, everyday navigation directly via the TFT display.

New, more dynamic design with a sharper GS profile.

The new F 750 GS and F 850 GS are designed from scratch and now have an even more dynamic and masculine appearance. The design of the models, with easily recognizable features such as asymmetrical headlights and the characteristic GS silhouette, immediately makes it clear that these motorcycles belong to the BMW Motorrad GS line. The distinctive silhouette of the motorcycle is formed by the high front fender, which flows into the lines of the fuel tank and seat, ending with a functional and significantly more elegant rear section.
