Review of the Ski-Doo Renegade XRS 800 etec snowmobile

The BRP Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R is a snowmobile that is suitable for use in any conditions. The Ski-Doo MXZ 800 series has been on the market for quite some time. The Canadian brand BRP, which is responsible for its development, regularly offers consumers new models with improved characteristics. One of the most popular modifications of the series is the Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R snowmobile (year of appearance: 2011), which combines high speed characteristics and efficiency.

The snowmobile is based on the REV-XS platform. The aluminum track tunnel and pyramidal frame with a rigid structure allow the driver to position himself in the center of mass, which has a positive effect on the handling of the vehicle. The Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R has one of the lightest designs of any product in the brand. The single seat allows the body to move freely over a considerable distance, which improves maneuverability and dynamics.

The chassis of the model can withstand any load perfectly. The front suspension is based on double A-arms, complemented by HPG Plus R gas shock absorbers. An optional quick-release anti-roll bar link is available, which can be installed and removed without additional tools. This technology allows you to quickly change the “tactics” of movement, taking into account specific movement conditions.

At the rear, the new rMotion suspension is fully adjustable with HPG Plus/KYB Pro 36 shocks and can be adjusted in just a few minutes without the need for special tools. Brand representatives claim that the rMotion suspension has the greatest travel among analogues. During its development, priority was given to a comfortable ride on uneven surfaces and reliability when jumping. On heavy terrain, the suspension does not break through, and on hard-packed roads it behaves very softly.

The BRP Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R uses a dedicated PowderMax mountain track. Similar elements are installed on Summit mountain snowmobiles. Due to this, the device seriously improves its cross-country ability.

The powerful engine provides the necessary traction to tackle the most challenging tasks. The device gains high speed in a few minutes. The racing braking system allows you not to be afraid of the movement process, making it as safe as possible.

The BRP Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R stands out from other snowmobiles with its stylish design. An interesting combination of colors and an original body make us pay special attention to it.

The basic package of the model includes:

  • straight aluminum handlebar with J-handles;
  • fuel level indicator;
  • electric starter;
  • narrowed REV-XP X seat with luggage compartment;
  • windshield (size – 152 mm);
  • speedometer;
  • multifunctional digital information center;
  • heated handles;
  • tachometer.

Options include rear-view mirrors, an additional seat, a backrest and a tow bar.

The BRP Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R is a real beast that can wade through large snowdrifts, jump from steep banks onto ice, move over rough terrain and maneuver through the forest. This snowmobile is a dream come true for any consumer.

Trump card

ROUTE, road... no definition has yet been invented for such a surface. In general, the direction. The soil, which has not had time to freeze, has large and very deep puddles, all of which is lightly powdered with freshly fallen snow. There is either heavy drizzle or light rain in the air. I’m sneaking around on the “Renegade 800X” almost on my belly - trying to keep the thoroughly washed four-wheeler clean for a photo shoot. Hell no! The foppishly upturned wings give the ATV a dashing, combative look, but they only provide very limited protection from snow and mud flying from under the wheels.

Okay, let's forget about futile neatness. I open the gas trigger. Here is the first impression (which, in my deep conviction, is often the most correct) - beauty! I'm driving rear wheel drive. As one of my friends from Odessa would say: “Is there a sports four-wheeler underneath me, or what?”

A real “sport” should be driven on rear wheel drive. Actually, there are practically no “4x4” options among them. “Renegade” is an exception to the rule. Apostate. Please note that even in the Dakar marathon, on heavy sandy off-road conditions, all ATVs are driven by the rear axle. And as the athletes themselves say, the main thing in the African sands is not to lose momentum, otherwise you might get stuck and never move again. True, this is not “Dakar”, but ordinary Russian mud, but also impassable in places.

The more or less tolerable road somehow imperceptibly led to a pretty swamp. I cheekily aim at the very middle of the swamp. From under the rear wheels there is a spectacular geyser of dirt, and... my “Renegade 800X” begins to fade, lose speed, and as a result, dig into the quagmire much faster than moving forward.

This is where all-wheel drive comes in handy - the Renegade’s trump card is just for such a case. I click the button on the steering wheel. Simultaneously with the connection of the front axle, the automatic rear differential locking system “Visco-Lok” comes into effect. The ATV, rowing with all four wheels, like a huge swamp turtle, gradually begins to accelerate. The dirt is flying in all directions again, but mostly it feels like it’s on my glasses. I quickly pull them off due to their complete uselessness, but then the swamp ends...

Engine

The BRP Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R is powered by a reliable Rotax 800 HO Power TEK 2-stroke engine. The unit operates incredibly quietly and smoothly, sounding more like a 4-stroke unit. The engine's smoke emissions and emissions of harmful elements are minimal for this class.

The engine uses modern direct injection, which makes it very economical (average consumption 15 l/100 km). Another advantage of the engine is the ease of starting and the ease of pressing the gas handle. There is no need to prepare the unit for the rest period, since it has an automatic preservation function.

Rotax 800 HO Power TEK Engine Specifications:

  • working volume – 799.5 cc;
  • rated power - 137 hp;
  • number of cylinders – 2 (in-line arrangement);
  • cylinder diameter – 82 mm.

Unit features:

  • fuel system - injection;
  • cooling system – liquid;
  • ignition system – CDI magneto.
  • emergency engine switch – present.

Fuel tank capacity – 40 l, oil tank – 3.5 l.

Owner reviews

  • Ali1687: I bought a Renegade 800 3 years ago. The impressions from its use are twofold. After 140 km the spark plug burned out. I dealt with this problem quite quickly. However, after 100 km, a friend began to hear a noise during a slow start, then a cracking sound began to be heard under the seat. During acceleration, extraneous sounds disappear. The service center said that the equipment just needs to be warmed up. I put it in the garage, but the crackling and noise remained. As long as I drive like this, it doesn’t affect the functionality in any way. In terms of speed characteristics, the 800th Renegade is very good, as well as in terms of efficiency (consumption does not exceed 20 liters under any operating conditions and loads).
  • Mikhail, Vladivostok: Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R, as it turned out, is not the best model of the Canadian brand. I owned it for 2 years. Over 500 km of travel, the spark plugs had to be changed 2 times. The device works very unevenly. Sometimes the speed suddenly drops, the tachometer drops almost to zero, but the engine does not stall. Moreover, this happens even on warmed-up equipment, when it has already traveled several kilometers. When you start, you hear strange clicks from your left leg. At high speeds there is quite a lot of vibration. I didn't really like Snowball. After having to change the belt at the end of the second year, I sold it.
  • Anton, Saransk: Gad 800 from a friend, he bought it 3-4 years ago. We live nearby, so we took it for a ride several times. The technology is not bad in principle, but very expensive. I drove it through the forest and across the field. Consumption was approximately 14 liters per hundred. Once I ran into a snag that was hiding in the snow. Snezhik survived such a collision, dented his ski a little, but there was no damage. I liked the controls of the Gad 800. The steering wheel moves easily, the technology listens to the driver, and acceleration is generally excellent. A friend says there have been no serious breakdowns so far, and he is happy with the equipment.
  • Vitaly_1985: I've been riding the MXZ Renegade 800R since 2013. Today the mileage is 2500 km. I'm happy with the snowmobile. The device carries as much as is loaded on it. It goes smoothly, without failures. At the same time, it is light and dynamic, and the consumption is 13-15 l/100 km. It has all the options for driving in winter: heated handles, a powerful battery, rear-view mirrors. I did minimal snowballing. The problem only happened once. When I put the vehicle in reverse, the headlights suddenly stopped working. The reason for this turned out to be a blown fuse. I bought a new one, installed it, cleaned the block itself, the motor stopped working. In the end I had to remove the fuse, so that's how I drive for now. Otherwise the snowball is perfect.

Breakaway ATV - Can-Am Renegade Review

No matter how much ATV manufacturers fantasize about classification, there are only two real classes - touring and sports. If you want to travel, get all-wheel drive; if you want to jump, get a sports one. Single hybrid models, that is, all-wheel drive athletes, were a rare exception, and controversial both in design and technical characteristics.

In theory, of course, there should be two ATVs in the garage of recreational equipment - a tourist, with a good cubic capacity (if necessary, clear the snow around the house) and a rear-wheel drive sportsman. But in practice, not everyone can afford two ATVs, and the issue is not so much financial as mental. The wife will cut it down, because an active, living man should already have at least three pieces of this “iron junk” - a motorcycle, a snowmobile, a jet ski, and then they are also trying to stick two ATVs into the garage... The Canadians from BRP, apparently, have We have about the same wives, and we have a common issue of a universal ATV with them. What’s also nice is the desire of Canadian guys to develop a really fashionable style for all equipment, be it a snowmobile or a jet ski. The time of “peasant” ATVs is over; an ATV should be able to ride and at the same time be stylish. The Can-Am Renegade is a beautiful ATV. .. True, when they say about an ATV that it is beautiful, everyone freezes and waits for criticism that it is a little heavy, weak or angular. But in the case of Renegade, you won’t be able to perform much - under the trendy lines of a spectacular body kit there is a Can-Am Outlander 800 EFI, proven by American deserts and Russian swamps. The changes are small and useful. First of all, the Renegade has lost its utilitarian aesthetic, and 35kg has gone with it. Is it a lot or a little? Minus 35 kilograms is really a better chance of pulling an ATV out of a swamp or plus two cans of gasoline on a safari.

For active extreme sports enthusiasts, the Outlander touring suspension was modified - the front travel was increased by 25 mm, and now the Renegade double-wishbone suspension operates at 229 mm. The TTI rear independent suspension was added the same amount, and its travel became 254 mm. What good did Renegade get from Outlander? Of course, this is an 800 cc 4-stroke engine with more sporty settings. 65 horsepower per 270 kilograms of dry weight is a ratio that no touring ATV can boast of. Let's say, this is really close even to the outright athlete DS 650 Baja X, which weighs 225 kilograms for the same 65 horsepower and, of course, has only rear-wheel drive. You know what the best part is when you lift the Renegade off the trailer and crawl over the first reclamation ditch? It does not have the Outlander's critical front overhang, which is often used to dig into steep climbs. On the Renegade there is practically no front overhang: the edge of the wheel is the edge of a symbolic kangaroo. Let's go. The downside of the Renegade is, of course, the wings, which cannot be called anything other than symbolic. All the dirt that will be under the wheels will effectively fly into the air. The only thing left to reassure yourself is that no self-respecting ATV rider comes home clean. Regardless of where the dirt flies.

In terms of dynamics, calling the Renegade an ATV pleasant is an understatement. Anyone who has driven a single-seater Outlander knows that pressing the accelerator quickly at the start is, at best, scary, because after half a second the front wheels will already be dangling in the air. The Renegade has the same attitude and a little less room to rest your right foot if you deliberately decide to go wild. Because there was only a small aluminum arch left at the back. It is clear that there are no traces of any cargo areas or trunks on it. The passport says that you can put 16 kg on the rear trunk... well, try it. It’s better to have a backpack on your back and a set of essentials in it.

I would like to say something about the suspension separately. We need to work with her. In the sense that the stock device will surprise you with an overly soft suspension. During the test there is simply no time and conditions to set it up properly, so I won’t tell you how. But the Renegade has excellent suspension potential. If you're not satisfied with the factory shock absorbers, install "Yolins" or "VIP". In general, this device can be configured either with a small financial investment or simply by working with your brains. The Renegade itself is asking for tuning, because having a standard Outlander is a normal situation, but meeting a mega-spectacular second Renegade at a party is bad manners. It's like parking a Porsche Carrera RS next to a Porsche Carrera RS, only in a different color. You could have ordered a wing from TechArt...

In general, the Can-Am Renegade makes you look at owning an ATV from a different perspective than before. So I would take two sets of wheels for it. Plus to the regular ones. Angry size for real trophy hikes and a version of highway annealing. I would buy a special lift, a fancy impact wrench, and depending on my mood, I would choose a style of recreation - enduro, swamp, or communication with the traffic police officers on Tverskaya... Can-Am Renegade is a beautiful, powerful, lightweight ATV. This is a device for extreme sports enthusiasts and egoists, because it is difficult to call it particularly functional or reasonable. You are one on one with the most powerful engine in the modern ATV construction industry. This, on the one hand, is a guarantee of the most untethered drive, on the other hand, support for all-wheel drive, SST ski frame and automatic locking of the viscous clutch, which you won’t forget to turn on... The only thing missing is operating experience... Because the first season will dot all the i’s . But the first tests say: Renegade is a breakaway machine...
