The BRP Ski-Doo Tundra LT 550 F is a classic utility snowmobile with the longest track in the segment. The model represents the Ski-Doo family of cars (manufacturer – Canada). The Tundra series is positioned as an inexpensive alternative to more advanced modifications of the brand and Yamaha snowmobiles. At the same time, the equipment has excellent grip and a large power reserve.
The Ski-Doo Tundra Series comes in one color. The basic configuration of the model is minimalist. Previously, it did not even have an electric starter, which was installed as an option. At the same time, the snowmobile had everything for comfortable movement: comfortable steel steering handles with curved ends, a 10-inch windshield and a REV-XP seat.
A special feature of the series is the eDrive clutch mechanism, which is paired with a powerful motor. In the brand's lineup, Ski-Doo Tundra modifications are considered budget models, but they are not deprived of pleasant details. All snowmobiles in the series are equipped with a hydraulic brake and reverse.

Ski-Doo Tundra - a budget snowmobile from BRP
Snowmobiles of the Tundra series are produced by one of the leading manufacturers of equipment for work and recreation? by BRP, founded by Canadian entrepreneur Bombardier. This son of a simple farmer gravitated toward technology since childhood, and after acquiring a small garage, he began to design new models on his own. He was especially attracted to tracked vehicles.
It is not surprising that Bombardier was the first to develop transport for winter travel. The snowmobile track system is still exactly as the company founder designed it. The high reliability and efficiency of the equipment produced allowed BRP to take a leading position in the production of ATVs, jet skis, all-terrain vehicles, and snowmobiles.
Engine
The BRP Ski-Doo Tundra LT 550 F is powered by a Rotax 550F 2-stroke engine with nearly 10 years of history. Its predecessor was the time-tested Rotax 500 motor. The modernized version was positioned as an inexpensive unit for budget snowmobiles. At the same time, the Rotax 550F has a long service life and excellent characteristics. The power plant is equipped with 2 carburetors, which ensure precise dosing of the fuel mixture. Cooling is carried out by counter air flow and a fan.
Rotax 550F Engine Features:
- lack of anti-theft electronic system DESS;
- presence of “suction”;
- minimum amount of electronics.
The Rotax 550F is a classic 2-stroke engine, so efficiency and environmental friendliness are not its strong points. The simplicity of the design makes the engine a standard of reliability and simplifies its maintenance.
Characteristics of the Rotax 550F unit:
- working volume – 553.4 cc;
- rated power - 57 hp;
- number of cylinders – 2;
- cylinder diameter – 76 mm;
- The recommended type of fuel is AI-92 gasoline.
The fuel tank holds up to 40 liters of fuel. Oil tank capacity – 3.7 l.
Snowmobile "Skido Tundra" - detailed review
Anyone who understands snowmobile technology certainly knows what characteristics a snowmobile should have. One of these characteristics is high cross-country ability. The SKI-DOO TUNDRA LT 550 is famous for its cross-country ability. This is achieved through a lightweight RF control system platform. In addition, the unit is very ergonomic and does not contain anything superfluous. Thanks to the high seating position, every trip turns into a pleasant pastime. The driver's back, arms and legs do not experience discomfort. Pilot 6.9 skis provide the best guidance for your snowmobile, even in dense forest conditions. The SC-5U suspension system allows you to efficiently overcome various snowy areas, without any shaking or vibration.
Snowmobile "Skido Tundra 550"
The snowmobile is characterized as a high-speed machine, which together has excellent maneuverability, power and dynamic qualities. It is worth noting the high maneuverability of the snowmobile. It is difficult to find places where he will “sit”. Due to the moderate seat width, the snowmobile is very comfortable to travel through areas in a standing position. The ride is also comfortable in a sitting position. The back and legs do not experience discomfort or any difficulties. The telescopic front suspension properly ensures good handling and a smooth ride of the snowmobile.
There is an opinion that the Tundra is squinting due to the narrow caterpillar. Practical tests and tests have shown that this is not true. Even with extreme driving, it is difficult to roll a snowmobile on its side. That is, we can safely conclude that the Skido Tundra 550 is ideal for forest conditions. By the way, if you expect fast driving with constant maneuvering, then it is better to drive the snowmobile alone.
I would also like to say a few words about the practical purpose of the snowmobile. Despite the powerful engine and decent traction characteristics, you won’t be able to haul packed trailers with firewood on this snowmobile. If this is a well-worn road, then you can still try. But if it’s loose snow, it certainly won’t work. At night it is very convenient to ride due to the front headlight. Its light illuminates the road efficiently.
Appearance
The snowmobile looks very modern, despite its “tourist” purpose. Designers and constructors worked hard before putting the snowmobile on the mass market. On the front you can see a protective bumper, which will protect the equipment from severe damage when colliding with tree stumps. The windshield eliminates the impact of headwinds and snow on the driver while traveling.
Looking at the snowmobile from the side, you can see a fairly long platform, a set of rollers and a caterpillar track with hooks. There is a luggage area at the back, thanks to which an additional compartment – a trunk – can be installed. To minimize the level of discomfort during long trips, a special backrest is provided for the passenger.
Technical characteristics of the SKI-DOO TUNDRA LT 550
The productive element is a two-stroke power unit with a displacement of 553 cc. There are two cylinders installed, each of which has one carburetor. The snowmobile's power is 57 hp. The engine receives the necessary cooling due to the flow of the oncoming engine. The dry weight of “TUNDRA LT 550” is 227 kg. Main parameters of the model: length - 3310 mm; width - 957 mm; height - 1220 mm. Track parameters: length - 3923 mm; width - 406 mm. Skis are installed, the type of which is “Pilot 6.9”. The fuel tank is designed for 34 liters of fuel, the oil tank - 3.5 liters of oil. Capacity – designed for two people. An oil suspension is installed at the rear and front.
Owner reviews
- “Simple controls, fairly fast snowmobile, powerful engine. Ideal for traveling through dense forests. Valency is very low. High cross-country ability, which is achieved thanks to the height of the hooks of more than 30 mm. Gives a “light” to many Yamahas that cost incredible amounts of money. A very nimble snowmobile, weighs little. It’s especially nice to ride a snowmobile alone while standing, when you just feel unreal control over the equipment.”
- “It’s difficult to find something more suitable for hunting. Lightweight, if it “sits” somewhere, then two adults can pull it out. The engine starts without problems even at -40. Among the shortcomings, I can say about the carburetor, which “likes” to freeze sometimes.”
- “Whatever they say, but in terms of fuel consumption it cannot be called “gluttonous.” The low weight allows you to ride on loose snow without slipping. Excellent maneuverability, good lighting at night. Thanks to the even distribution of the weight of the snowmobile, it is easy to get out of the snow in reverse. It’s quite economical; if you fill up a full tank, you can drive about 180 km.”
- “Yes, I agree this snowmobile is very reliable. Overall it has a lot of advantages. But I can say one thing with complete confidence - if you are going to do any work (transport firewood, etc.), then it is better not to purchase this equipment. This is certainly not what it was created for. We need something more powerful, at least take a closer look at the Tundra 600 snowmobile.”

There are much more used options on the Russian market. The final price tag here is determined by the mileage and condition of the snowmobile. Average prices:
- 2007-2008 – 250,000-320,000 rubles;
- 2011-2012 – 390,000-450,000 rubles;

Features of operation
"Tundra" from "Ski-Do" is one of the lightest utilitarian snowmobiles. The LT modification is distinguished by high cross-country ability, as evidenced by numerous positive reviews from owners. The all-terrain vehicle is equally suitable for both beginners and professional snowmobile riders. The high seating position contributes to a comfortable ride on long trips, which brings this “utilitarian” closer to the tourist class.
The improved suspension contributes to good track control on hard-packed snowy roads. Pilot 6.9 and Pilot DS skis (depending on model).
They have a slight “taper” at the end, allowing them to cope well with obstacles in forest conditions, as well as in very rough terrain.
Owner reviews
- Alex84: I have owned a Ski-Doo Tundra LT 550 F for almost 5 years. For me, the choice in favor of this snowmobile was due to several reasons. I was going to ride alone or with my son; I planned to carry a small load on the sled (100 kg, maximum 150 kg), so a powerful and expensive device was not needed. A narrow gooseneck and a fairly powerful engine made it possible to drive a little. For driving across the field and infrequent trips to the forest for hunting, this snowmobile should have been enough, and the light weight simplified the process of pulling it out of the snow captivity. In the end, I got it right with the purchase. In addition to the above advantages, the Tundra LT 550 F also turned out to be a very reliable car. I continue to use the device and do not plan to sell it.
- Russian: Ski-Doo Tundra LT 550 F is a decent snowmobile. For a beginner it will be the best option. Maneuverable and playful, but at the same time easy to control. I usually ride it alone, but the snowmobile carries two people no less confidently. The load also carries well. The maximum load was as follows: things, provisions, two people on a snowmobile and two on a homemade foam. The Tundra LT 550 F coped with the task perfectly, although the speed was low. One full tank is enough for almost 100 km (without heavy load). There have been no serious bugs yet, only positive impressions. The only downside is high fuel consumption.
- Murmansk: I went to the BRP showroom for a completely different model, but the seller convinced me that I didn’t need anything else besides the Tundra 550. In the end, I chose this snowmobile and was not disappointed. In terms of price, the snowflake was one of the cheapest, but in terms of cross-country ability, it is an absolute cosmos, you can get it from anywhere. Everything is extremely simple and convenient to manage. From time to time I ride with a neighbor who has a Yamaha Aventura. What I want to say is that I had to push him out 7-8 times, but I never planted mine. The only thing I don’t like about my snowman is that it smokes like a steam locomotive, and my clothes stink for a long time after a trip. If I change the Tundra 550, it will only be for a 4-stroke snowmobile.
- Victor: The Ski-Doo Tundra 550F is a completely normal snowmobile, but it has a lot of disadvantages. I have been using the technique for 5 years and have managed to study it thoroughly. It is not suitable for serious work because it is quite weak. It doesn't go well in deep snow, but it consumes a lot of gasoline. The dashboard has a minimal number of sensors. There are no complaints about the quality of the snowmobile (everything is assembled perfectly, the components are reliable), but getting to the engine and main elements is difficult. It is impossible to carry out repairs and maintenance of the Ski-Doo Tundra 550F yourself; everything must be done through a dealer, which is quite expensive. The model is quite controversial, but it is definitely not inferior to domestic snowmobiles.
Ski extensions for snowmobile BRP Tundra lt550: to buy or not
On the forums, almost all Ski Doo Tundra owners write that skis only spoil the handling of the LT550, but this is far from the case. They worsen only for rides, but for hunting, fishing and long-distance driving they only improve the behavior of the snowmobile in deep snow. Low-speed handling in deep and loose conditions is the same, and stability is much better. Forgives many mistakes (does not fall on its side). A ski in a meter of snow sinks 5 cm, counter-steering freely falls on its side, before in a snowstorm, only the ski came off a little straight away on its side and you walk on tacks, now you can freely correct the steering wheel. A visual confirmation of the rear sight, now you can ride while sitting, but before this was simply not possible. I bought 26 cm extensions specifically for the experiment (price 2600 per pair), but now I will never take them off, although I myself like to drive and fool around in the snow.
Chassis:
The suspensions are equipped with oil shock absorbers, which contribute to a soft ride, and the front suspension is made telescopic for high-quality absorption of road irregularities. In the best traditions of BRP modifications, the forty-nine has the colors of a chameleon, for example, the option with the PRO prefix means a single seat and an enlarged luggage platform, which can accommodate provisions and fuel for a week-long expedition.
