WE'RE TESTING THE 2005 SUZUKI RM85L

2005 Suzuki RM85L. This bike test is taken from the April 2006 issue of MXA.
The RM85 minicycle is a staple in Suzuki's recreational racing scene. More recently, drivers have liked Davy Millsaps, Nico Izzi and Blake Wharton have taken the yellow mini to the major championships. However, while all these kids are constantly growing (especially Davy), their trusty mini-bikes are not. This leaves many young people struggling with larger, more powerful 250F four-strokes or feeling like mammoths on their minis. There is a solution. The answer is "Big Wheel". In Suzuki's case, they put the "L" designation after the RM85 to make the RM85L. The "L" means it's a big wheel, but it's easily identified by its larger wheels and increased ground clearance. The RM85L is designed for the 85+ riders who are trying to move up to 250F.

STRENGTHS OF RM85L

Differences: Before highlighting the yellow rocket's strengths, it is useful to mention the differences between the RM85 and RM85L. Instead of a 17-inch front tire and 14-inch rear, the L has a 19/16 combo (along with a one-inch difference in seat height). Overall height has been increased by 2.6 inches, ground clearance by an inch, and weight by nine pounds.

powerband: Why is the RM85L such a good bike? Its little brother, the RM85, is a winner. The L has the same powertrain, frame and suspension. MXA test riders raved about the usable range. The low to midrange punch was punchy and powerful; a trait minibike racers demand. Luckily the bike is designed for big kids because the powerband is not for the faint of heart. At the same time, one flick of the throttle and every kid from Billy Beginner to Robbie Racer will enjoy plenty of power. It's not about how fast the RM85L runs, it's about how fast you want it to run. We like it. The top end isn't the strongest part of the engine, but it still barks before it fails.

Appeal: The RM85L engine was no surprise to any of the MXA test riders. After all, it's the same engine as the smaller RM85. What pleased test riders was that the “L” version handled bumps and G-outs. Mini bike riders usually have to put their weight on the back of the bike and hang on for dear life due to the big hits on the RM85. This is not the case when you drive on "L". Why? It's all on wheels. The larger wheel size covers more surface area, which in turn allows the bike to roll over bumps instead of being swallowed up. Test riders also noted that the RM85L was very stable at high speeds, giving them confidence to hold the throttle through long corners and across straights.

Ergos: Typically, when a manufacturer decides to offer a larger version of an existing model, they forget the nuances that can arise when changing wheels. Not Suzuki. There are no ergonomic or braking issues because the RM85L shines in many of the right places.

RM85L WEAKNESSES

Springs: Tester's number one complaint with the RM85L was that the suspension was too firm.
However, depending on how quickly Junior grows, he may find forks and shocks to suit his liking. Beginners and intermediate riders will want to choose softer settings to soak up the shock, while experts will do just fine with the standard settings. If every mini racer in the world had Expert-like speed, we wouldn't be complaining about forks and bumps, but that's not the case. Side: It shouldn't be a surprise that several MXA test riders complained about problems turning the big wheel. Larger wheels, a raised seat height and ground clearance allow the RM85L to feel swollen compared to the svelte RM85 mini. Small riders have a harder time starting a turn, and several experienced riders felt that the bike was not as easy to ride as the small model. Taller test riders didn't complain and loved the extra legroom in ruts and tight corners.

WHAT DO WE THINK?

The RM85L is as cool as the other side of the cushion. It's perfect for any mini rider trying to move up to bigger bikes. The "L" does a great job of making the big step easier. Obviously, the big wheels take the RM85L out of the usual milieu of the mini-bike classes, turning it into the "Big Wheel" class, but that's the way of the world with transitional machines. If you're too big for a mini but too small for a 250F, this is a chance to get your beak wet while you wait for the growth hormone to kick in.

Suzuki RM85 2011

Suzuki RM85 Preview

Faithful to their “race-breed performance” moto, Suzuki relies on their data from weekends at the racetrack to improve on their existing models. This is especially true in the motorcross / off-road world of motorcycles, where Suzuki's RM-Z 450 and 250 models are dominating across all expert classes.

But Suzuki never leaves the youth behind, and continues the youth-inspired line of RM85 dirt bikes for 2011. From motor to suspension to looks, the 2011 is designed as the stepping stone for future MX / SX stars.

Engine Features:

The RM85's high-revving 84.7cc, 2-stroke, liquid-cooled, reed-valve engine has a bore and stroke of 48.0mm x 46.8mm. The cylinder features Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM) for durability, weight reduction and effective heat transfer for superior class performance. A Keihin PE28 carburetor provides smooth throttle response and is designed for simplified maintenance. The exhaust valves are made of aluminum to best match the expansion rate of the cylinder itself, improve sealing. The RM85's exhaust valve governor and actuator helps provide good throttle response and overall tractability. A digital CDI map helps provide strong engine performance at higher rpms. The RM85 comes with a large-capacity radiator for efficient engine cooling. Showa rear shock absorber with large diameter shock body and valving designed to produce a plush feel and increase bottoming resistance Aluminum swingarm with chain adjustment system similar to RM250 Brake and shift pedals designed with thick cross-section for durability Chrome-moly footpegs for increased durability and improved rider feel Frame designed for increased rigidity, durability and straight line performance; features large diameter tubing in key areas and large front reinforcement plate Fuel tank, radiator shroud, seat and number plates with design and graphics similar to RM250 Lightweight rear brake system with large 200mm diameter rear brake rotor for positive brake feel Showa 37mm inverted fork featuring cartridge damping system with fully-adjustable rebound damping and 20-way adjustable compression damping — Includes fork guards to protect inner fork tubes Twin piston front brake caliper and large 220mm diameter front brake rotor, plus large capacity front master cylinder Wheel sizes to meet AMA 85cc class regulations F: 70/100-17, R: 90/100-14 High-revving 84.7cc, liquid-cooled, case-reed engine produces strong peak power and torque — includes aluminum exhaust valves for more stable exhaust flow and RM125-style exhaust valve governor and linkage for precise valve movement and strong throttle response Keihin PE28 carburetor provides smooth throttle response and is designed for simplified maintenance Knurl-finished gear shift lever tip for improved appearance and feel Large-capacity radiator for efficient engine cooling Magneto cover with styling similar to RM250 SCEM-plated cylinder — lighter than a steel-sleeved cylinder with superior heat transfer capability Easy to use clutch lever with long lever stroke for precise clutch operation and feel Smooth shifting 6-speed transmission — shift drum detent plate and detent spring designed for positive shift feel, plus needle bearing mounted on the left side of the shift drum to reduce friction.

Chassis Features:

A tubular steel frame and thick wall aluminum swingarm provides class-leading performance on the track, especially in the corners. The frame was designed for increased rigidity, durability and straight-line performance; it features large diameter tubing in key areas and a large front reinforcement plate. Showa 37mm inverted front forks are completely adjustable for rider weight, style and ability. The forks feature a cartridge damping system with fully-adjustable rebound damping and 20-way adjustable compression damping (also included are fork guards to protect the inner fork tubes). The front forks offer 275mm (10.8-inches) of travel. A Showa rear shock absorber, with large diameter shock body, is designed and properly valved to produce a plush feel and increase bottoming resistance. The Showa rear shock provides 277mm (10.9-inches) of wheel travel. The RM85 comes with a twin-piston caliper front brake with 220mm (8.7-inches) large-diameter disc and a rear brake with 200mm (7.9-inches) disc to provide excellent braking performance. The RM85 also comes with a light, narrow-diameter front and rear brake hose. The font brake hose is routed behind the fork leg, eliminating the need for a brake hose cover, which helps reduce weight. A rigid rear brake caliper provides reliable braking performance, long pad life and is easy to maintain. A plastic rear brake caliper guard reduces the possibility of deformation and saves weight as well. The RM85's forged aluminum-alloy rear brake pedal gives the rider accurate braking feel. The RM85's footpegs are made of cast chrome-molybdenum steel, instead of stamped steel, which makes them more durable with better grip. A long clutch lever makes it easy to accurately locate and work the engagement point during starts and when clutching off at corners. Each side of the RM85's seat has textured surface for better knee gripping. The RM85's wheel sizes meet AMA 85cc class regulations (Front: 70/100-17; Rear: 90/100-14)

Transmission Features:

The RM85 is equipped with a smooth shifting six-speed transmission. The transmission features a fully worked-out shift mechanism including a strong shift-drum detent spring and needle bearing on the left side of the shift drum. A knurled shift-pedal tip delivers excellent grip and shift feel.

Suzuki RM 125

Information on the Suzuki RM 125 motorcycle

Model of motocross motorcycle Suzuki RM 125

produced from 1970 to 2007. The most interesting are the versions from the early 90s to 2007. Older modifications of the motorcycle are very rare and practically never found in the Russian Federation, so this review will focus specifically on Suzuki RM 125 models from 1991 to 2007.

The main feature of the Suzuki RM 125 is a 1-cylinder, 2-stroke, liquid-cooled engine that produces about 41 hp. power and more than 30 Nm of torque. As with all models in this class, the Suzuki RM 125 engine is tuned to operate in the upper range and produces maximum performance at 10,000-11,000 rpm.

Other important features of the Suzuki RM 125 include a steel frame, a reed valve with variable valve timing, disc brakes and advanced sports suspension (in the latest versions). The Suzuki RM 125 model is used mainly as an initial sports equipment for motocross training.

“Senior” model – Suzuki RM 250.

The main competitors of the Suzuki RM 125 in the class:

Brief history of the model

  • 1970 - the beginning of the appearance of the Suzuki RM 125 series.
  • 1999 - The Suzuki RM 125 model receives an inverted fork.
  • 2007 is the last year of production of the model. The motorcycle produces 41.06 hp. power and 30.2 Nm of torque.

Starting from the 90s of the last century and ending with the last years of production, the Suzuki RM 125 model has undergone many changes regarding both the engine (increased performance) and the chassis. Unfortunately, it was not possible to find more accurate information on changes by year.

Suzuki RM 125 motocross motorcycle
