Yamaha MT-09 SP
MT-09 SP is another Yamaha designed for people with head. I used to have MT-09 and MT-10. And now another model has fallen into my hands - MT-09 SP. What do I think of him? How to drive it? What are its strengths and weaknesses? More on all this in the next review.
The MT-09 SP is another Yamaha designed to take over the city's arteries. Generally speaking, the entire series is a surprisingly unruly and successful family of motorcycles. Although there are significant differences even between the MT-10 and MT-09 SP, there is generally a big gap between the MT-09 SP and MT-07. The following video review includes the MT-09 SP model, but the review may well be the standard version (I am also referring to the first experience with the MT-09 ). This is mainly due to the fact that...
...differences between MT-09 and MT-09 SP
– they are not that big. If they are converted into zlotys, they will cost 5 thousand zlotys. What do we get in return?
- fully adjustable Ohlins suspension at the rear and KYB at the front,
- chair with stitching,
- Finished in Silver Blu Carbon,
- dial with inverted colors.
Yamaha MT-09 SP
Also, apart from the MT-10-style appearance, it should be noted that the SP version will have a safer grip on the road thanks to better suspension. There is full adjustment of hardness, goodness, reflections, stresses - generally this suspension will work the way you set it. It's nice that we have back firmness adjustment. If someone is riding with a passenger, they will probably appreciate it. The issue of appearance is less important here, although the dial with inverted colors is much better than the classic one. You can see them better, everything is clearly visible, whether in the sun or in the rain. At night it can be seen as if the signs are biting in the retina.
Engine Yamaha MT-09 2021 and Yamaha MT-09 SP
Yamaha got it right with the new engine. By adding 42 cubic meters to the inline three thanks to an increase in piston stroke by 3mm, the designers increased performance to 119 hp at 10,000 rpm and 93 Nm at 7,000 rpm, and this while meeting the more stringent Euro5 requirements. It’s still nice to see that people are working in the right direction: there are fewer emissions and higher productivity. Moreover, not only the environment benefited from this, but also the riders’ wallets: according to the manufacturer, the motorcycle became 9% more economical. The tidy shows a consumption of 5-6 liters per hundred, which is generally not bad with a 14-liter tank.
The 2021 version features electronic throttle instead of a conventional cable. When , not everyone liked it, and rightfully so, given that the first versions were quite glitchy, making the motorcycles not only unpredictable, but also quite unpleasant. Fortunately, Yamaha has thoroughly dealt with this issue, and the system works almost identically to the usual cable throttle, taking into account all the goodies of electronic throttle. Hence the efficiency and precise cruise control (which is only available on the SP version).
Engine in MT-09 SP
The motorcycle is driven by a 3-cylinder unit producing 115 hp. and 87.5 Nm. At the same time, he weighs 193 kg. It's definitely a better power-to-weight ratio than the Aprilia Shiver 900 . The power is felt. The Mt-09 is one of the craziest bikes I've ever ridden. In first gear, it enters the wheel itself under normal acceleration. As usual, at some point we get a power surge and the bike lifts up on its own. In second gear the gas comes out, in third there is no more gas, but a shot from the door handle will help. Do you like flying on rubber? Then this mot is for you. You don't have to worry too much about getting the front wheel up. However, the heart can beat and let you know of your being by beating the driver's legs with heat.
Yamaha MT-09 SP
In addition, we have here any slip clutches and quickshifters in the series. This combination makes it easier to both increase and decrease. The slipper clutch works great on the MT. The shifter is a bit more complex than the YZF-R6, but it does the trick in the head. This causes people to use the machines differently, mostly by playing with them. Anyway, the gearbox works very well and has noticeable lever travel. Unfortunately, the clutch basket housing, in my case at a height of 180 cm, sticks to the foot, stopping and supporting the foot. It's just so far from the engine that it's a little awkward.
Ninth Shaft: Test Drive Yamaha MT-09
The MT family of Japanese naked bikes, which replaced the FZ galaxy of all sizes on the Yamaha assembly line in 2013, became a real revolution in the world of road motorcycles. Strong in-line fours, like a samurai sword, were cut off from civilian use, replacing them with a “two” on the medium-sized MT-07 and a “three” on the large-sized MT-09.
The character and design of motorcycles changed, which at that time became a truly new word in the industry. It would seem that this is success, however, just four years later, in 2017, the MT-09, popularly called the “nine,” was redesigned. This will be discussed in this review.
Video version of the test drive of the naked Yamaha MT-09 2017:
Frankly, the “pre-restyling” motorcycle looked very, very fresh. The appearance, with all the will, could not be called boring or conservative, especially compared to the predecessor FZ-8N, which did not change much over the years of production. Or maybe buyers didn’t appreciate such radical changes?
I don’t think, even in our area, where world premieres arrive late, if at all, “nines” began to appear on the streets. Probably, Yamaha simply decided to further warm up the fans by bringing the naked car’s appearance closer to the top-end, liter MT-10.
The appearance of the new product is controversial, but it does not leave anyone indifferent. For example, I liked the old one better.
There is no arguing about tastes, but it’s difficult to call the “ten” a beautiful and original motorcycle, unlike the platform on which the device is based. However, almost all world brands strive to bring the appearance of all brand models to a common denominator, focusing on the top model.
However, all the changes came down to the head optics, where a wide headlight with an incandescent lamp gave way to two slanting, frowning LED embrasures and tail feathers, where, among other things, the shape of the lamp changed (hello BMW S1000R), and the license plate bracket moved from under the ass to the pendulum. I will not talk about the detrimental effect of its influence on the unsprung masses, I will only say, looking ahead, that it is no longer useful. This means that the owner of the new “nine”, as well as the “old” one, will have to constantly sit in the “moto-couple” group and other escort services in search of women with wide backs who can effectively cut off the flow of water and dirt flying from the pilot from rear wheel.
Alas, apart from their remarkable appearance, the number plate brackets screwed to the pendulum have no advantages.
However, this is the only serious drawback that you will have to put up with. The rest is in perfect order: the knees are slightly covered by a wide tank, the front wing copes, and the missing wind protection on top only aggravates the sensations; lovers of “safe sex” will be left in the dust.
Landing? This is Sparta! Nothing that doesn’t relate to adrenaline and dynamics - the driver’s seat sets the mood even before you turn the key in the ignition. The saddle is relatively high and does not even try to seem soft, the thin waist of the device will appeal to people with short legs, the footpegs are raised and pulled back, and the pilot is literally pulled to the wide crossbar of the handlebars and is shifted close to the front wheel. So much so that if you lean forward slightly you can see it.
The high saddle is narrowed at the base, which means that short people will be comfortable driving the MT-09
There are a minimum of keys on the remote control, and when you see the dashboard, your head keeps remembering a line from the capital’s Krovostok team: “What about Domodedovo? It’s better for you to forget about Domodedovo.” It depends on everyone, but I categorically did not like the design, readability, or functionality, but it is designed, of course, in an original and unusual way, which is important for such a device.
A small box with a monochrome monitor displays speed, fuel level, engine operating mode, and boasts a tachometer equalizer and a set of all the necessary indicator lamps. But even if you don’t like it as much as I do, don’t be upset - it doesn’t affect the feeling of the motorcycle in any way, while driving you look anywhere but at it, speed, revolutions, gasoline, all this information loses all meaning, Once you start the inline three and play with the throttle.
The angle of the tidy can be adjusted, but it itself is not very convenient - it’s a very small monitor
Even if you choose the most vegetable of the three fuel maps, even with activated traction control and ABS, the motorcycle sets the mood in chilly autumn weather. There is a lot of torque and power from the very beginning to the end of the tachometer tape, the gears are stuck in with exemplary clarity, and the quick shifter came in handy for the new product.
The quickshifter on the MT-09 is not a luxury, but a necessity
I twisted the handle, and just hold on, the short wheelbase and 847-cc displacement immediately throw the front end up to the sky, or rather, they strive - the electronics catch such pirouettes with a bang, wheelie lovers will have to turn it off. And don’t let only 115 horsepower and 87.5 Nm bother you, it looks boring only on paper, but on the move it’s a real lighter.
The inline “three” is damn good, especially compared to the previous bland and boring “fours”
This is because the chassis, which, by the way, has not changed compared to the pre-Restyle, remains one of the best in the class. Components without revelations and failures: an “upside-down” adjustable for spring preload and rebound stiffness with thick pipes, an adjustable rear shock absorber working in tandem with the so-called asymmetrical double-sided pendulum, but what harmony! Torsional rigidity is standard, 188 kilograms of curb weight are not felt at all, and the suspension settings...
Wheelie-car on the road: you just have to want it, and at the same time two wheels will touch the asphalt only at traffic lights
On smooth, sporty asphalt, it’s hard, you can feel every joint of the asphalt, while speed bumps and other irregularities are perfectly absorbed, it doesn’t break through anything, and most importantly, it doesn’t bite much when braking.
Reference! And how the vehicle steers... It's provocative, sharp, absolutely predictable, it tilts and shifts effortlessly, the trajectory can be easily controlled and adjusted regardless of the angle of inclination, and the suspension density is sufficient for effective braking in corners.
The suspension is tight and pleasant, and the standard settings are excellent. There is no need to mess with adjustments.
At some point, the device even seemed too nervous and harsh to me: the character of a supermoto is good on the track, but in the city you want more smoothness and imposingness even from a street fighter. But there is no peace here - even in the standard, “vegetable” mode of the engine’s response to turning the electronic throttle, the engine is extremely jerky and sharp, aggravating the sensations of the chassis, and once you turn on the dynamic mode “A”, jumping over the middle “B”, it’s like insolence The device generally goes beyond all possible boundaries.
But there is nothing to be afraid of, in addition to modern electronics, the “nine” can also boast the most magnificent Sumitomo brakes - a pair of front opposed 4-piston radial-mounted calipers is exactly what such a gun needs. The feedback is standard, the deceleration is linear, the efficiency is sufficient for braking from any speed and placing the device in any “stop.”
There are plenty of brakes to spare, efficiency, linearity, feedback and ABS settings can be set as an example for competitors
What else is needed for complete happiness? It’s difficult for me to answer this question: the device, although unique, is amazing in its concept, but too nervous even for such a lover of hot things like me. But I’m sure he will have enough fans, despite his controversial appearance.

Systems in MT-09 SP
The bike has 3 levels of traction control and three D-mode riding modes. These modes allow you to change the power failure characteristics. Standard mode provides powerful bottom and top speed range. We have a wild mode at the bottom and this mode has power, but less response to the movement of the throttle. This gives so much that the bike runs smoother but still has power. I traveled in this mode the most because it works in the city. The bike is responsive and responds to every movement of the throttle, happily jumping forward. This means that on uneven surfaces it sometimes drags the entire motorcycle and the rider. And here comes mode B with its soft driving
Traction also provides advice, and the manufacturer does not rage without the need for a number of levels of control. The tracks can be disengaged when the bike is stationary, but we have to do this every time the bike is put into gear. 1 degree traction control ensures wheel slip. You can have fun when the motorcycle enters the wheel smoothly, also the system will not react. Well, unless accompanied by a stronger rear skid, the computer will take control of the car and bring it to the ground. In mode 2 traction control there are no such antics. Also for beginners, B+2 traction control mode will be the best option.
Yamaha MT-09 SP
Classically we also have ABS, which works very well. Definitely better than other bikes I've had the opportunity to ride. The brake is operated by one finger. Full braking force is available without problems. For this, ABS is able to cope with sand, wet, stray, starts on pebbles - but this is nothing new. Using just the back is an action that goes beyond the purpose of ABS unless it is a very mild acceleration assist.
What else about riding the MT-09 SP
The motorcycle is quite large, wide and tall. I say this, of course, from my point of view and experience. There is no tragedy, but I had a thin block under me. The weight does not interfere with driving, but it makes itself felt during free maneuvers. Unfortunately, the sofa is hard, but I sat on it, driving 200 km - so you can understand. The position will not tire anyone, because we sit in an upright position, our hands are wide enough on the steering wheel, and not bent too far forward. The passenger will be worse off because there is less padding in the rear seat, but its width is good so there is enough to reach 50 km. Additionally, while wearing typical motorcycle boots, my heels touched the passenger's feet.
Really great lights on a motorcycle. The LED is a sign that the light will be white, almost like daylight. You can see well, far and wide. This Yamaha model also comes with a thick footer. No thin rod is just a solid support that our motorcycle does not hit due to the wind on the ground.
Yamaha MT-09 SP
Basically, I can’t imagine how you can drive it quickly without an accessory. Without it, it starts from 120 km/h. With the fast one, you can easily fly up to 160 km/h. Moreover, the addition is quite a must if you plan to leave it out of town as an owner. There are usually a variety of motorcycle accessories available and you can find them all in one place.
Aka FJ-09, aka Tracer 900, aka simply Tracer.
Crossovers.
The consumer is spoiled! I remember my first motorcycle - a Sibikha Fora with 400 cc, produced in 1992. Like first love - the best motorcycle in the world! It cornered perfectly, was extremely comfortable on a long journey, and was amazing at traffic lights with its dynamics. And how with delight I told my friend about the incredible 180 km/h achieved on... of course a closed track, accompanied by an instructor, ambulance, fire brigade and rescue boat. However, time passes, we change our two-wheeled friends, gain experience and begin to look at technology more critically. You can't please us these days. Road worker? Archaic! Sport? For the psychos! Turynda? Fat! We constantly hear something like - I want an inexpensive motorbike for the track, but so that it’s ok in the city, and sometimes to the countryside 10 km on a dirt road and so that my friend can feel comfortable on the back and the fork must be reversed, and the engine is diesel, like on mine Opel... in general, I still want to drive in the back, like those blacks in shorts from YouTube! It’s exaggerated, but there is a request for a motorcycle for everything. To our joy, the damned capitalists are closely monitoring our wishes. For example, motorcycles that are called crossovers (or all-rounders, not in our country). The approach is the same as with cars. A passenger car chassis, a higher seating position, a hint of off-road capability and all sorts of features on the topic of practicality. I think the best example is the Honda nc700/750. Simple chassis, comfortable upright position, compact/elastic/economical motor and relatively low price. More or less suitable motorcycles include the 650 Kawasaki Versys, 800 Honda Crossrunner, Yamaha Tracer and the excellent S1000XR. They don’t shine in any discipline, but almost everyone can do it!
Choice.
After selling the Siber, I wanted a fresher litrosport, but... a crisis happened and I realized that I actually wanted something more affordable and, if possible, as fresh as possible. The classic Yamaha MT-09 seemed like such a motorcycle to me. Relatively inexpensive, excellent engine and light weight. Everything suits us - shall we take it? In fact, no . Surely you have experienced a similar feeling - you have decided on the key parameters, price, color, you are already figuring out what is missing in stock... and the worm of doubt continues to gnaw. What did MTkha not please? The main thing is that after sports I will miss wind protection. Wind deflectors on classics are attached to the motorcycle in such a way that they transfer air flow pressure to the steering wheel, and this is bad for me personally. The expressionless face is fixable, but I don’t like the collective farm. Yes, after all, I already had a classic! That. The next candidate for my new motorcycle was the Tracer, which is still the same MT-09, but: Wind protection - check. Expressive muzzle - check. Something new is also a check. Of course, it is a little heavier (not fatal), the steering wheel is wider, more expensive, and in general I have a rule - not to look at new equipment that has not been sold for at least a year, which means the manufacturer has not yet managed to overcome all childhood diseases. On the other hand, the regular MT-09 is already on sale and... you only live once.
About the advantages of a motorcycle.
I won’t ramble on with thoughts and will briefly go over the pros and cons. 1. Motorrrrr. Very funny. 850 cc, 115 horsepower + 88 Nm of torque + weight of 210 kg + top speed of 230 km/h = at medium speeds you can provide yourself with a good acceleration kick at any time. 2. The tank is 18 liters - a little more than a simple MT. It's a small thing, but nice. 3. Large, convenient tidy with useful and not so useful features. For example, the “ECO” indicator - save gasoline, take care of nature, keep the speed lower, switch to higher speed early - well, yes, yes. 4. Unlike the regular MT-09, there are more comfortable seats + 2 driver positions at a height of 845 or 860 mm. 5. LED headlight with an unnatural bluish color, which is easily noticeable by car drivers. Plus 2 dials for headlight height adjustment. 6. Height adjustment of the windshield. 7. ABS + switchable traction. 8. Wide, comfortable steering wheel. 9. Operating modes. Standard, A (awesome), B (boring). The latter is suitable for running in and rain. 10. Cigarette lighter. 11. Central stand. 12. Convenient remote controls with large buttons from Pimp. 13. Clear box with feedback. Not a Honda, of course, but definitely better than a Suzuki or a Kawasachi (guys, this is strictly IMHO). 14. I liked the brakes - informative and with good force, definitely better than on jixers before 2009 15. The stock version does not make you despondent, like on a Siberian, for example. It felt like you were riding an electric bike. 16. Hand protection only slightly diverts the air flow, so in hot weather leather gloves are quite ok.
Minuses.
1. Steering wheel. Wide also due to the hand protection, which is more a part of the design than protection. It’s sad in the aisle after a sport where you just ride and don’t worry. Then you fold the mirrors and don’t worry even more. 2. Suspension. Yes, it’s from an ordinary road builder, albeit retuned, but of course I want it to be like a Siberian, or better yet, like a Beha, and for the same money... hmm. Subjective moment. Maybe sports is not enough for me, because everyone has their own riding style and needs. 3. Wind protection. Yes, it is here and works, but with a stock windshield after 130, a ragged stream of air flies into your helmet, which creates both noise and vibration. I got myself a big mug from Givi. Again the point is subjective. 4. Wind protection again. More precisely, the mechanism for adjusting the windshield. It was clearly invented by a person who has no idea about motorcycles. 2 vibration adjustment knobs spontaneously unscrew, and the other day 1 of them decided to leave the side along with the plastic retainer. Moreover, the problem is solved with a penny washer, which removes a significant part of the vibrations from the clamp and bolt. Big hello to Yamaha. 5. Seat. It is certainly more comfortable than on the MT, but for a long journey I would like something softer. Subjective of course.
A couple of interesting features. Due to the short wheelbase and direct landing from traffic lights in the first two gears, the traction wheel constantly catches attempts to get into reverse and chokes the engine in the first two gears, so if you want to show someone Kuzka’s mother, we turn off the traction, move as close as possible to the tank and lean forward. It turns out to be a kind of cross version. Again, you need to be prepared that the unloaded front wheel will start to “sausage” at the very first hole, but the effect is quite controllable. For example:
What's the result?
I tried driving at different paces, through traffic jams in the city and on the highway.
I'm happy with the technology. I caught myself thinking that, by and large, this is a motorcycle for the widest audience. For beginners and for guys with experience. For long journeys and for the city. For those who like to shoot and drive slowly. For boys and girls, moms and dads If by analogy with cars, it’s probably like a German SUV with a diesel engine, but definitely not a boring utilitarian Japanese, which the nc750 is more like. If you ask yourself the question of what to replace it with, then the competitors are who are heavier, who are more vegetable. Here's the S1000XR, yeah, but it stands like a cast-iron bridge. You can buy a second bike, sport for the track or endura, you know what it’s for. The motorcycle allows you to ride according to your mood. You can be quick, take turns, and you can hustle kilometers along the highway. Of course, in the first case you will be more pleased with the R6, and in the second with a pimp, but I can only afford 1 motorcycle
Summing up the MT-09 SP
This bike is designed for urban riders, but not necessarily for beginners. This is a very well made mote, the finish and materials give no reason to stick. Combustion of 7 liters shouldn't shock anyone, this is the kind of bike it is. He tempts you to commit sins, encourages you to drive fast, has a crazy temperament and loves to show off his power. This is the "dark side of Japan" after all.
Find out more about the motorcycle itself on the manufacturer's website. There are too few numbers and photos from me. Also, I encourage you to watch the video review below.

Yamaha MT-09 Tracer: test of a very popular Japanese crossover
They say that the best is the enemy of the good. With the passing of generations, successful models often lose their essence, becoming too expensive and complex. But as time goes on, even bestsellers such as the Yamaha Tracer have to evolve.
Dmitry Fedotov
Crossovers are breaking sales records not only in the world of cars. Yamaha Tracer, created on the platform of the road naked MT-09, became a bestseller immediately after its debut in 2015. It is not surprising that the new generation is so similar to its predecessor, although it has evolved in every detail.
I definitely like the new corporate style. The old one was not bad, but today you expect more emotion from the design of a motorcycle, and the new Tracer gives it. A pair of LED lenses under the frowning fairing, stylish trims on the sidewalls and, most importantly, a red taillight diffuser, which looks like a real revelation in the world of boring “bleached” lighting technology.
And what a dashboard! A pair of 3.5-inch color monitors mounted at a slight angle is impressive to look at. And how it works! The engineers despaired of pleasing everyone and finally suggested that the pilot independently determine the functionality and display on the screens what seems most important.
The landing, on the contrary, has remained almost unchanged. Of all the differences, the only difference is the saddle, which is one and a half centimeters closer to the ground. However, it doesn’t take long to change its height: the adjustment allows you to choose between a lower position of 810 mm and an upper position of 825. In addition, you can change the position of the steering wheel and driver’s footrests.
The range of adjustments doesn’t end there: you can also change the height of the windshield. The adjustment is mechanical, but convenient: you can operate the latch “with one left hand” even on the go. But if on the outside the list of improvements looks like a revolution, on the inside the Tracer remains true to the concept set by the first generation.
The all-new aluminum frame differs little from the outside from the previous generation, but new technologies helped add rigidity and shed weight due to the wall thickness being halved - from 3.5 to 1.7 mm. The same applies to the pendulum, which is now attached to the frame differently.
A special pride is the wheels. The sides of aluminum castings are heated and rolled out with special rollers, achieving the strength of forged wheels while maintaining the cost of conventional “casting”. The new wheels are 700 grams lighter than the old ones, a small thing! But it's little things like these that make the 2021 model feel completely different.
Lightness, sharpness, excellent suspension performance and enthusiasm make you seek out the most winding roads. The asphalt does not have to be perfectly smooth, but it should be: suspensions on the primer, instead of pleasant density, communicate their short travel. However, Yamaha itself positions the Tracer as a sport-tourist; no one promised off-road potential.
But on asphalt there are few equals. The dynamics are breathtaking! Excellent traction from the very bottom and powerful pick-up in the middle, accompanied by the front wheel lifting off during acceleration - this is what you need both for driving around the city and for traveling. Japanese engineers completely redesigned the old engine; increasing the displacement from 847 to 889 cm3 is just the tip of the iceberg.
And although the power has increased symbolically, from 115 to 119 forces, combined with total relief, the new Tracer feels different. Electronics have also stepped forward, including a unit that monitors the position of the motorcycle along six axes, multi-level traction control and four engine operating modes.
In other words, Tracer has completely changed without changing in principle. As before, this is a bright and dynamic motorcycle for both the city and travel. I don't think there's a single grumbler among previous generation owners who would say that the Tracer isn't the same anymore!
