Cross motorcycle, pit bike or enduro: choose wisely
Recently, motorsports and motorcycle tourism have become very popular all over the world.
Many parents are happy to send their children to sports schools and clubs. Indeed, motorsports promote the development of character, physical skills, coordination and responsibility. Athletes know how to plan their lives and achieve their goals. When should I send my child to the section? According to the recommendations of experts in our country, this can be done as early as 5 years (this is not a standard figure, but it is usually used by coaches when recruiting new groups). At least, according to the Rules of the sport “motorcycle sport” (approved by order of the Ministry of Sports of Russia dated 04/01/2019 N 281) (as amended on 06/05/2019), the minimum age category for participation in competitions is 6 years.
For comparison, in Italy, even children as young as 3 years old study. As practice shows, it is optimal to send a child to the motocross section from the age of 10. Previously, the child is not yet ready for serious training, both physically and psychologically.
In this article we will talk about off-road motorcycles, their design features and which motorcycle is best for adults and children to choose for sports or travel.
Pitbikes
These motorcycles are best suited for the youngest children. At their core, these are small mopeds. The pit bike is distinguished by a single-cylinder engine with a horizontal cylinder and air or air-oil cooling.
Historically, these bikes were intended to be used by technical personnel on motorcycle tracks. They are not distinguished by high speed characteristics, but are quite reliable and safe for young people.
In the 60s in America, these motorcycles began to appear in retail stores for the first time.
Today, the pit bike has become a sports motorcycle for small motorcycle tracks. The wheel diameter is usually from 10 to 17 inches, the gearbox can be manual, automatic or semi-automatic.
For beginners, the best option is an automatic transmission, as it is the easiest to use. However, with increasing experience, the athlete switches to manual shifting. If you plan to engage in sports for a long time, then it makes sense to think about a semi-automatic transmission, or maybe a manual one. The wheelbase of the pit bike is of a size that allows this small motorcycle to be controlled by an adult.
The pit bike is officially included in the regulations of motocross competitions by the American Motorcycle Association. In Russia, there is no official minimotocross discipline yet; competitions are held as part of the Russian Cup.
TOP 10 best motorcycles for a beginner in 2021
Due to differences in classes, as well as the fact that everyone’s financial capabilities are different, we tried to form our TOP motorcycles for beginners based on a balance of criteria such as stylistic preferences, price and technical characteristics. Moreover, the last point does not imply the best performance in its class, but its optimality for those who are just learning to drive a motorcycle or have minimal experience. And we looked for such “cars” based on a couple per type - a budget option and a more expensive model, as well as, if possible, the closest alternatives. So, let's go have a look...
Yamaha YBR125
Yamaha began producing this lightweight, small-capacity road motorcycle back in 2004, and to date, 4 generations have been presented. This is a truly universal model that will be easy for a beginner to handle, even if she is a fragile girl. If we take into account reliability, controllability, stability, convenience and dynamism, then this is the best that a beginner can buy with only 72,000 rubles (on the secondary market).
But it’s not for nothing that “Yubrik” is called so affectionately; for a large guy or man it will not be entirely comfortable, so if you have dimensions of 185 cm, 90 kg and have an additional 35,000 rubles in reserve, we advise you to take a closer look at its direct competitor - updated Honda CB125. It is slightly larger, similar in design and characteristics (torque is even slightly larger), and also has a very useful feature for a beginner - a gear indicator (shows not only “neutral”, but also a specific gear).
Bajaj Dominar 400
In the heavier and more expensive segment, the competition is much higher, but the product of the Indian concern is more suitable for a beginner due to its relatively calm nature (when compared with analogues of the KTM series). Last year, the engine of this model received two camshafts and became “heavier” to 40 hp. at 35 N/m. The exhaust system was adjusted, a 43-mm upside-down fork was installed, and the instrument panel was modified. In good condition, you can try to find such a used Bajaj for 230,000-250,000 rubles.
Accordingly, the main competitor of “Dominar” in the road motorcycle category – the BMW G310R, with a cost of 72,000-85,000 rubles more and much more expensive maintenance, can now rely only on its own “branding” and... still a slightly higher quality assembly.
Honda PCX150
Scooters are a very difficult category to choose. The abundance of manufacturers and the incredible variety of characteristics, as well as regular updates, make any rating subjective and of little relevance. But, if you remember the price, characteristics “for a beginner,” and also focus only on models that have already proven themselves, then you can settle on this Honda for 180,000-220,000 rubles. No longer a small-capacity vehicle, but not yet a “sofa”, thanks to the 14 wheels, this “Maksik” feels great in the city and suburbs, where a 150 cc engine can accelerate it to 120 km/h, and water cooling will prevent overheating.
An alternative in the category could be: an inexpensive fuel-injected Honda Pantheon 150 (if you can find this old model in acceptable condition); slightly more expensive than the Yamaha NM-X125.
Piaggio MP3300
Among the more expensive scooters aimed at a beginner, it would be right to highlight this Italian model with a slightly futuristic design. Its special feature is two wheels at the front, which, due to the special suspension design, can move at different levels and provide excellent stability. Although this is a tricycle, the wheels are located close together, so maneuverability and maneuverability in the city are excellent. The cruising speed of the 300 cc version on the highway is about 110-120 km/h, which is not very convenient on highways, but overall it is enough. The cost of an MP3, depending on the year and condition, fluctuates around 215,000 rubles for a used 250 and above.
If you believe the rumors about the bad behavior of such “undertrikes”, pay attention to the neo-retro Vespa GTS Super 300 IE for the same money or the SYM Joymax 300 (about 72,000 rubles cheaper).
Honda Steed 400/600
Choosing a cruiser for a beginner is even more difficult than choosing a scooter. Here the weight of the motorcycle, and therefore the confidence in driving without experience, directly depends on the cubic capacity. At the same time, small-capacity cruisers are such only in name and appearance, but in reality, the same road cruisers with lower and higher heights are definitely not suitable. But the Steed from HONDA is something, thanks to its incredible reliability and very low seat height. This motorcycle is also very popular because it can be tuned endlessly. Production ended in the early 2000s, but with proper care and maintenance, a 40-year-old Honda Steed is not a problem, and you can buy such a device from 180,000 rubles.
The design of the motorcycle is quite comfortable for people with different anthropometry. But if for some reason you don’t really like this model, then you can always choose something from the range that is a little more expensive - Yamaha Virago or DragStar.
Kawasaki Vulcan S
For many novice motorcyclists, one of the main problems is starting. We get lost surrounded by cars, we are afraid of stalling at a traffic light, we worry about it and... we stall when it turns green. The high-speed cruiser “Vulcan” can start with virtually no throttle, which will add confidence to the beginner, and the ABS system (optional) will forgive mistakes when braking. If you consider that a brand new 650 cc Kawasaki, along with all its advantages, costs “only” 540,000-580,000 rubles, then you can take a closer look at representatives of the same price and power range of the Suzuki Intruder series or the “shadow” (Honda Shadow ). And for fans of the most famous name in the cruiser/chopper category, we recommend the relatively new Harley-Davidson Street 750.
Yamaha WR250R
An instructor should tell you how to choose an off-road motorcycle. But the presented soft-enduro, a “civilian” version of a lightweight cross-country motorcycle, is certainly suitable even for a beginner. This lightweight bike, with good handling and water cooling, is unlikely to jump over logs or climb rocks, but it rides great on light off-road conditions and allows you to practice the necessary skills. At the same time, there won’t be any particular problems on a track with a hard, even surface. Plus, this model has a wide variety of family, over time you can switch to the WR250F hard or WR250X motard. The cost of a used motorcycle in good condition is from 200,000 rubles.
Suzuki RM-Z450
A cross-country motorcycle with a fairly calm character for 450 cc. It is unlikely that you will be able to win immediately and against everyone at motocross competitions with it, but you can definitely become a confident user of this type of equipment. For a beginner, it’s better to take the version after 2005, when the model was equipped with an improved engine with fuel injection and a 5-speed gearbox. They also improved the chassis, suspension and lightened the frame. The average price of a “cross bike” in recent years is up to 720,000 rubles; a used one can be found for half the price. Main competitors: Honda CRF450R, Kawasaki KX450F and Yamaha YZ450F
CF-Moto 650 TK
A category such as budget motorcycles for beginners in the touring class might be an unattainable dream. However, the Chinese motorcycle industry, that part of it that makes (relatively) normal equipment, comes to the rescue. Good endurance, well-thought-out design, ABS is already in the database, a lot of spare parts stores in Russia, the world and the Internet, and a price of about 400,000 rubles will allow you to start mastering motorcycle routes for thousands of kilometers (or at least hundreds) at once. The main thing is not to spare money on maintenance.
We find it difficult to name something similar in this class that is equally reliable, inexpensive and controllable!
Kawasaki Versys 650, BMW F800GT and Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa
If the budget is not limited, then the choice of a touring motorcycle will depend on the intended routes and preferred riding style. Therefore, in this category we present you with three options to choose from - enduro tour for 600,000-650,000 rubles, classic tour for 720,000 and sports tour for 1,080,000 rubles. respectively. Listing the advantages of these models is long and tedious, but there is a lot of information about them on the Internet, so you can choose the type that you like and carefully study the characteristics and reviews.
Or go off the beaten path and ride the Honda Gold Wing, although choosing a roughly 400-kilogram motorcycle as your first choice requires considerable size and strength, or an enormous ego.
Cross motorcycles
SUVs are actively used for cross-country racing on closed tracks. Usually its length does not exceed 3 kilometers. It is necessary to understand that motocross motorcycles are quite a serious vehicle, which is intended for use by experienced athletes. Speeds increase significantly compared to pit bikes; these motorcycles are much larger and heavier.
This type of motorcycle does not have anything superfluous on board (there is no dashboard, direction indicators, headlight, brake light, rear-view mirrors). This is the most lightweight motorcycle designed exclusively for motocross. These motorcycles are not suitable for civilian riding in highway-city conditions.
The distinctive features of motocross motorcycles include:
- Extremely high engine power within racing standards
- Excellent maneuverability
- Smaller steering wheel. In the hands of a professional, it allows you to react faster to on-road (or rather, off-road) situations.
- Special rubber with off-road tread
- Increased front and rear suspension travel compared to other types of motorcycles
- Raised exhaust pipes
- Typically single cylinder engine
- The front of the seat is raised to make the pilot feel as comfortable as possible during jumps
On motocross motorcycles, two-stroke air-cooled engines are often used, this is due to the need to make the design as light as possible without losing power. But modern motorcycles can also be equipped with four-stroke liquid-cooled engines. To reduce the influence of unsprung masses on motorcycle control, the front suspension can be of an inverted type
A cross-country motorcycle is a sports equipment intended exclusively for motorsports and movement off public roads.
What is the best first motorcycle for a beginner and novice motorcyclists to choose and buy?
Choosing the first bike
If you are a beginner, we do not advise you to start immediately with a large cubic capacity.
The choice of your first motorcycle should be based on safety considerations. It is necessary to understand the principles of driving a bike, learn the traffic rules well, and distinguish the difference between riding a car according to traffic regulations and driving a two-wheeler. But there is a difference! A car is a large vehicle. It is clearly visible on the road (even though accidents occur regularly). The motorcycle always remains invisible. Even bright clothes don't help. It is very important for a beginner to verify this from his own experience. It will also be necessary to learn to predict the road situation “several moves” ahead.
All motorcyclists know that large cubic capacity and explosive nature provoke the pilot to break the rules. While an experienced rider can afford this, a beginner cannot yet react so well. His reflexes are not sharpened, his skills are still not enough. But there is more than enough ambition! Therefore, we recommend choosing a 125 cc vehicle as your first motorcycle. Here are a few of its advantages:
- You can open category A1 for legal driving under additional traffic regulations at the age of 16;
- These bikes are relatively inexpensive, both new and used;
- They are very cheap to maintain;
- They “eat” very little fuel;
- Consumables and spare parts can be found even in the outback;
- One or two seasons is enough to master the necessary motorcycle riding skills;
- If you buy a used Japanese motorcycle, for example, the legendary Yamaha YBR 125, then you can sell it at the same price without losing money.
Choosing a motorcycle by height
Height is an important factor that directly influences the choice of motorcycle. Saddle height varies depending on the type of bike. Thus, off-road motocross and enduro motorcycles are distinguished by high ground clearance and enormous suspension travel. They are very high in the saddle, but in this sport this is justified: the pilot almost always stands above the motorcycle, and “catches” it with his foot only in sharp turns.
At the same time, such a tall bike is not suitable for riding around the city. Numerous traffic lights, crossings, and intersections force the pilot to stop regularly. Ideally, he stands firmly with both feet on the asphalt. This is the safest option, allowing, if something happens, to “catch” a falling bike by pushing off with your foot.
Uneven roads, an occasional hole, a slope, sand, dirt on the side of the road - all this requires confidently holding the motorcycle at a speed of zero km/h. Of course, you can ride on any two-wheeler. Many pilots only lightly touch the asphalt with the toe of one foot. But this option is unsafe. And taking a passenger on board without being able to firmly hold the motorbike is generally irresponsible.
Therefore, when choosing a motorcycle, you definitely need to “try it on”. Or at least use the website https://cycle-ergo.com, where you can do this virtually by choosing a brand and indicating your height parameters.
Lifan KP150
from 1400$
The first on our list will be a fairly decent budget model designed for road driving, which the manufacturer did not deprive of good characteristics.
Its small and not very powerful engine has a liquid cooling system, which reliably protects it from overheating. This minimizes the possibility of engine damage due to excessive heat.
The six-speed transmission provides lower fuel consumption when traveling on the road, and also allows for slightly lower engine temperatures and less vibration when driving.
In terms of design, the KP150 range has always been distinguished by its attractive, simple style and elegance, while not forgetting to protect the bike owner’s legs, and side protective bars will help minimize damage in case of a fall on the side.
The 2015 model has not undergone major changes, maintaining the same style and becoming somewhat more minimalistic due to the fact that the manufacturer has removed some unnecessary design elements.
The huge headlight has been preserved, which, compared to the 2014 model range, now emits light better, and due to the use of polycarbonate instead of plastic, it has become even more reliable and does not turn yellow over time.
The instrument panel is almost entirely digital, with the exception of the speedometer. The numbers showing distance traveled and gear are larger than in the 2014 version.
However, the main advantage of this unit has always been its almost complete indestructibility. This motorcycle can withstand falls, heat and moderate abuse. If you also carry out maintenance on time, then you don’t have to worry at all that it will stall somewhere in the middle of the journey.
At the same time, it has a very attractive price. You can buy it in the showroom for $1,400. In this case, there is little point in looking for something cheaper, since you won’t save much, but you may end up with a defective model.

Flaws
- Here it is worth noting only special cases of defects, such as, for example, poor-quality chain guide rubber;
- The quality of the plastic is not too high.
Bajaj 220 Avenger
price: from $2300
This model, which came straight from sunny India, belongs to the “cruiser” class. It is great for riding on city roads, despite the fact that many may think that such motorcycles are only intended for riding on lonely deserted roads.
Don't be confused by the Indian manufacturing, as many famous motorcycle models are now manufactured at the same Bajaj plant.
The Avenger has a typical cruiser design with a large, comfortable seat that is extremely comfortable to sit in, however due to the model's low height it may not be very comfortable for people taller than 180cm.
The engine capacity is only 220 m3, which is quite enough for a quiet ride around the city. Although the description usually indicates a speed of 130 km/h, it is problematic to accelerate it over 100, so if you want to drive, it is better to take something else.
Due to its small dimensions and light weight, it is well suited for moving in traffic jams, as it can fit into almost any gap between cars.
Its handling is good, so even if you turn the throttle or drop the clutch too hard, nothing critical will happen, and it has a good braking system.
In general, this model is almost ideal for a novice motorcyclist, especially if you think about its cost.

- The bike is low in height, which can cause some problems for tall people;
- Low maximum speed.
Kawasaki Ninja 250R
price: from $3000
For those beginners who are after an attractive, bold design, but are prudent enough not to buy powerful racing motorcycles that can easily injure themselves, this model from Kawasaki is perfect.
In appearance, it is almost indistinguishable from its older brothers with a larger engine capacity and from the front it looks like a real aggressive sportbike, but its engine is designed to produce a higher torque, which reduces its peak power.
In general, this model has a very modern engine, just like the fuel injection system, which has two throttle valves for each cylinder, but only one is controlled by the pilot. The second one is controlled by the on-board computer. This allows you to achieve an even distribution of torque, which has a good effect on the smooth operation of the engine.
The maximum torque is 15,000 rpm and it honestly accelerates to this figure without much effort on the part of the driver. At the same time, it drives quite smoothly and will not roll over if you overdo it a little with the gas handle.
The maximum speed of 160 km/h is achieved without any problems, and stopping will also not be difficult thanks to the excellent braking system.
With all this, the motorcycle is quite compact, which makes it convenient to ride between cars in a traffic jam.
“By the way, its bright and noticeable color is another reason to consider purchasing it, since drivers will be able to clearly see it from afar.”
It is worth noting some inconvenience due to the specific design of such racing-type models, which you should get used to.
Kawasaki Ninja 250R motorcycle Advantages
- An excellent modern engine that is quite difficult to kill, and at the same time it responds very smoothly and delicately to control;
- Maneuverability and controllability stem from the specifics of the engine’s operation, so handling it will not be difficult;
- The control of the gearbox is worthy of special praise; its operation is almost unnoticeable, as it should be;
- Beautiful and aggressive, but at the same time quite ergonomic design.
Flaws
- Expensive plastic for the case. Therefore, you need to handle this motorcycle with care, otherwise replacing the original plastic if it falls will cost you about $600-700.
- Many people complain about an uncomfortable seat, but this is the problem with most sports motorcycles.

2020 KTM 390 Duke
It would be strange not to see him at the forefront of this list. One of the most popular motorcycles used by city drivers. He is loved and respected for his ergonomics - everything is convenient, and he is also nimble and moderately obedient. For a beginner, a couple of seasons is enough to get the hang of things.
Single cylinder four stroke engine. Weight without fuel – 149 kilograms.
If we talk about the 2021 model, the user will find a multi-color TFT display with adaptive backlighting. The fuel tank has increased to 13.4 liters. Find a new side mounted exhaust system. Ride-By-Wire throttle control and slipper clutch. Plus the KTM My Ride system for smartphone control.
On the official website now the price for this is 429,900 rubles.
2020 Kawasaki Z400
Although they call him “Urban Predator,” he’s actually quite a friendly guy! In addition, it is the lightest two-cylinder bike in its class - 167 kilograms. It fully conveys the features of its big brother - the Z series supernaked. The aggressive inclinations and the body with a sharp slope are easily recognizable. If you are embarrassed by the fact that you are a beginner motorcyclist and want something daring, but smart - why not an option?
The 2020 Kawasaki Z400 features a redesigned intake system - a downward-facing intake tract combined with a larger air cleaner housing. And this does not prevent him from being sensitive to the throttle, and, more importantly, not kicking.
At the moment, a new motorcycle will cost 512,000 rubles.
2020 Yamaha MT-03
Yamaha MT is another famous series of street racers. Junior MT was created specifically for beginner motorcyclists. And they were waiting for this motorcycle. We talked about this in the article: “The most anticipated motorcycles of 2020.”
It is based on the four-stroke engine of the YZF-R3 sportbike - parallel twin. An inverted telescopic fork completes the aggressive look. The suspension from the same sportbike adds maneuverability and control obedience. Fuel tank 14 liters. Curb weight - 168 kilograms.
The manufacturer is confident that this little badass will take you around the city and outside the metropolis on a modest journey.
It costs almost 432,500 rubles.
No frills - only low or medium power
Taking the most powerful bike at first is extremely dangerous, since you don’t yet have experience driving motorcycles.
And on a powerful bike, you may not have time to find your bearings in time and there is a high risk of getting into an unpleasant situation. In addition, just the presence of high power under the body already psychologically pushes you to turn the throttle to accelerate. Therefore, a sports motorcycle for a beginner at the first stage is not always the best solution. Classic models will be preferable.
As for cubes, motorcycles up to 400cc are a perfectly acceptable choice. This is a kind of golden mean. Taking a 600cc motorcycle for a beginner, in our opinion, is already too much. 1000 more so.
If you have at least a little driving experience and are choosing a motorcycle for the city, then for a beginner 400 cc is a reliable option for a long time.
Lightness is our everything
If you have no driving experience at all, then your first motorcycle should be light.
Everything is logical here. It is much more difficult to drive a heavy vehicle on the road. With any awkward maneuver on the road, you can be frightened and turn the throttle too hard and lose control. And even good physical training will not save you from falling. Lightweight bikes are ideal for both boys and girls. For example, the Yamaha YBR 125 option is suitable for the city. And those who have ridden a moped or scooter for at least one season can safely take equipment of 200 - 400 cubic meters. For example, Kawasaki ZZR 250, Honda VTR 250.
Don't throw money away - look at budget options
At first, it is better to take inexpensive models until you gain experience and dexterity.
And if the need for repairs suddenly arises, inexpensive motorcycles will be cheaper to restore. Therefore, for a beginner we look only at an inexpensive option.
Yamaha XT 660 X
A bright representative of the motard class with a volume of 600 cubic meters and a power of 48 hp. 17-inch wheels will ensure maximum maneuverability not only on asphalt surfaces, but also far beyond it. The motorcycle feels confident at low and high speeds, does not have any technical breakthroughs: a conventional steel frame, an unremarkable telescopic fork and a 5-speed gearbox. At first glance, this is not a remarkable model, but due to its simplicity, repairs will cost less than modern analogues. In addition, it will be easier to understand for routine maintenance and replacement of consumables.
Yamaha XT 660 X
Advantages:
- weight 187 kg;
- the ability to drive on any road surface;
- high controllability;
- free hop suspension 200 mm;
- high ground clearance;
- acceleration to hundreds in 5 seconds;
- moderate fuel consumption of 5.5 liters per 100 km;
- 15 liter tank.
Flaws:
- design for everyone;
- too high;
- there is a lack of traction after 120 - 130 km/h;
- There is no windshield.
SYM Joymax 300
A scooter is a unique representative of two-wheeled vehicles, focused on driving within the city. The variator allows you not to worry about which gear you are currently driving in, since the automatic system will do everything itself. Maxi-scooter with a volume of 300 cubic meters with a spacious and full trunk. The power is quite enough for movement, gaining a hundred kilometers in a matter of seconds. It has a bright and provocative design. A large windshield will protect the driver from oncoming air flows on the highway. The diamond-shaped headlight provides high-quality illumination of the space in front of the scooter at night. Due to the anti-corrosion coating, the plastic case is almost impossible to scratch. The seats are soft and comfortable, the seating position on them is upright, making it comfortable even for tall people. Classic dashboard with backlight that turns on at night and in cloudy weather.
SYM Joymax 300
Advantages:
- original design;
- CVT (for a certain category of people it will be a decisive factor for purchase);
- capacious trunk;
- good acceleration dynamics;
- good optics;
- high-quality plastic;
- power 23.5 l s;
- good maneuverability despite the dimensions;
- maximum speed 130 km/h.
Flaws:
- The plastic case is easy to break or scratch if dropped;
- weight 184 kg;
- high price.
Suzuki Boulevard 400
Japanese cruiser from a famous Japanese brand with a 2-cylinder engine of 399 cubic meters and a power of 33 hp. Peak speed is reached at 150 km/h. The maximum performance of the model is achieved at 6 - 8 thousand revolutions per minute. Equipped with a traditional steel frame and inverted fork, 5-speed gearbox and cardan drive. Comfortable seats will not tire you on long trips. The canonical dashboard is not overloaded with various kinds of sensors.
Suzuki Boulevard 400
Advantages:
- original appearance;
- with proper care, parts last a long time without replacement;
- driving with maximum comfort;
- Due to its slowness, it is a good option for a beginner.
Flaws:
- expensive consumables;
- low acceleration dynamics;
- weight 260 kg;
- drum brake
Classic travel
The best option for both beginners and experienced drivers who want to be independent of traffic jams and arrive on time to work, school, or meetings with friends. "Classic" has a comfortable straight fit. Such configurations are quite maneuverable and fit freely between rows of machines. This category includes street fighters and roadsters. Due to the lightweight frame and lack of fairings, they are quite light - and therefore universal for confident driving around the city. At the same time, a straight landing is not the best option for high-speed driving on a country highway.
An interesting representative of the class is the 2015 Ducati Scrambler with an 800 cc engine and 2021 with a 400 cc engine. At the heart lies a V-shaped injection engine. And the appearance is reminiscent of bikes from the 70s, which allows us to classify the model as neoclassical. The steering wheel is wide enough and the seat is comfortable for both driver and passenger.
Sports
Streamlined, technologically advanced, and eye-catching – “sports” are favorites among fans of fast driving. Thanks to the low seating position, the biker “merges” with the motorcycle, creating ideal aerodynamic properties. The main conditions for using a sports bike are a high-quality road surface and an experienced driver. If you confidently tick the boxes next to each item, then you can take “sport”, for example, the seventh generation Yamaha YZF R6. The latest restyling of the model took place in 2021: it received a more massive but more streamlined exterior, an inverted fork, larger brake discs, an ABS system, and a modern advanced system. Weight is 190 kg and power is 180 horsepower. 3 seconds – and you are already at around 100. Maximum speed – 260 km/h.
As a sports representative of the Old World, it is worth considering the “British” Triumph Daytona 675. Its engine, unlike many 4-cylinder “sports”, is equipped with 3 cylinders. 124 horsepower can propel the Daytona to 253 km/h.
The installed ABS system can be turned off, and a special track system is available for slipping the rear wheel. For those who don't want to fiddle with the clutch, a quickshifter configuration is available. Let us remind you once again that “sport” is the choice of experienced bikers. If you plan to buy it for training and install roll bars, the design of the bike may not allow this.
Motards
For those who spend most of their time on the road, but don’t mind going off-road, this is a great option. Even though there are road tires here, the motard feels great on bumps and dirt roads. Evaluate your city's road surface before purchasing. Perhaps a motard would be appropriate where a sports or classic road builder gives up and remains in the garage.
And here are the top representatives of the class:
- Yamaha WR 250 X, produced until 2021, is equipped with a 250 cc derated engine, 17-inch wheels. It features increased suspension rigidity. Weighs only 136 kg.
- The 2013 Honda 400XA is a rare but interesting example for Russian roads. The model is produced for the Japanese market, equipped with a smaller engine, which is found in the popular CBR500.
- Kawasaki Versys 650 - produced from 2007 to the present day based on the road version of the ER-6. Long suspension travel, adjustable front forks, reduced engine power and improved traction at low speeds add confidence to the Versis both on city curbs and on mountain serpentines.
250 cubes
An excellent solution for a “first acquaintance”. Equipment with such an engine is light, maneuverable, user-friendly and as predictable as possible. The design of the vehicle can be spectacular or aggressive.
400 cubes
A very interesting motorcycle category for the city, focused on street riding. With light weight, they can boast a power of 40-55 horsepower and rapid acceleration to 150-180 km/h, and this with economical fuel consumption. The downside is that they are produced for the Japanese market, which means they have to be ordered from there and already with mileage.
600 cubes
An option for experienced riders who feel confident on the road. And also for those who regularly take to highways and other open spaces where they can feel the potential of the engine. The models are reliable and stable, with a weight of 160-190 kg they accelerate to 220-250 km/h and impress with the power of 105-125 horsepower.

Suzuki V-Strom 650 ABS
The Suzuki V-Strom 650 ABS has a seat height of 83 cm. The main trump card of this motorcycle is the liquid-cooled injection V-Twin engine, the volume of which is 645 cubic meters, such an engine is considered ideal for beginners.
In addition, this engine has a rather harsh growl, but overall, the Suzuki V-Strom 650 ABS is quite loyal for novice bikers. The advantages of this bike are that it has a fairing and windshield, as well as a wide seat and plenty of space for the passenger. In addition, there is an ABS option, and the gas tank capacity is 18 liters.
Honda NT700V
Next, the Honda NT700V, which is considered one of the most expensive motorcycles, since the manufacturer has collected all the best qualities of motorcycles together, which is why this device is very attractive for both experienced bikers and beginners.
The seat height is 80.5 cm, which is perfect for a biker of average height, and will give a beginner the opportunity to lean on the ground if necessary. But the weight of the NT700V is quite large - about 255 kg. For example, the Yamaha R1 is a sport bike with a 1000 cc engine weighing 206 kg. But on the other hand, for a heavy touring bike with a driveshaft, this weight is normal.
The driveshaft is a major advantage, because motorcycles with a driveshaft do not require frequent maintenance compared to motorcycles with a chain drive.
The engine capacity is 680cc, liquid-cooled, 2-cylinder, V-shaped injection. This motorcycle rides great both in the city and on the highway. True, the Honda NT700V does not have a particularly aggressive look, but all other characteristics are at a very high level.
BMW F650GS
And then a more expensive alternative is the BMW F650GS, which has an in-line 2-cylinder engine. This bike comes standard with heated grips, ABS, bright turn indicators and an on-board computer. On such a motorcycle, even a beginner will feel like a cool biker.
What mistakes do newbies make?
They simply drive poorly, do not know how to predict the situation, instincts take precedence over skills.
Newbies don't understand the dangers. Allow adrenaline to lower your guard. Therefore, it would not be superfluous for parents to pay not for a motorcycle, but for a good motorcycle school, so that their son can really be taught how to ride.
Which motorcycle should you choose to start with?
You need a beautiful one, but not too resourceful so as not to get killed right away. This is probably a medium-sized chopper with a 600-800 cc engine. Suzuki Intruder, Honda Shadow, Honda Steed, Yamaha Drag Star, Harley Davidson Sporter are suitable. Here who likes what.
Chopper is more inert and is slightly less likely to get into an accident. If you don’t like its shape, then a naked one will do.
Chopper is a heavy, chrome-plated, imposing motorcycle, ridden by bearded guys in leather vests. There are small models: they are lighter and less powerful. They handle well. It’s a long way from “sports” or naked bikes, of course, but you can ride.
At what age is it best to start learning to ride a motorcycle?
Ideally, you should take part in motocross from childhood. They've been racing there since they were 4 years old. This gives great skills. In the sports section they teach you how to work not only with a motorcycle, but also with your body. It is important. As a result, by the second grade of school they already have 4 years of sports driving and enormous experience that will be useful in life.
Plus, the boys get driving experience on a closed track, where there are no cars and fewer dangers.
Learn how to ride a motorcycle with a passenger
Even those who think they would never ride alone need to prepare to be able to ride with a passenger. Situations vary, and you may have to take a friend on board and give him a ride to your destination. Therefore, even for a short time, you should know how to behave while driving a motorcycle with a passenger, since such a trip is significantly different from a solo trip. It’s better to prepare from the beginning to avoid the risk of injuring someone through inability to ride with additional weight behind you.
Familiarize yourself with hand signals
Any motorcyclist, to become a good driver, must know the hand signals that are used to communicate with other drivers on the road.
These are not signals you'll use every day, but you'll want to know them in case other riders try to communicate with you. These signals are indispensable if your flashers or headlights break down. There is a wonderful tradition all over the world - when meeting other motorcyclists, greet them by waving your hand. This is not a legal requirement, but it is not a written rule of politeness and etiquette, which means that you and the motorcyclists you meet have the same love of motorcycling, regardless of your job or what you do.
Know your local laws and keep the necessary documents with you
When you received your motorcycle license, you already had the opportunity to study the legislation and rules of the road, but be prepared that new provisions in the laws are added or changed from time to time. And if you are traveling to different countries, then each of them will have its own legislation, which you need to familiarize yourself with before making a trip, of course, if you are not afraid of a fine of $500, in which case you can omit this point.
Registration of your motorcycle, registration certificate, driver's license, insurance - these are the documents that you always need to have with you every time you ride a motorcycle. Believe me, karma works in such a way that on that perhaps only time when you forget to take some of the documents with you, you will need them right away. Therefore, come up with a convenient place where you can store all documents and have access to them if necessary.
Firstly, insurance should always be with you, and secondly, you should know exactly which cases it covers and which it does not. Most insurance covers the cost of injury or damage to a third party, but your motorcycle and you probably won't be covered unless you first take out personal insurance when you sign up.
Learning to stop
In a car, you simply hit the brakes and then stop. On a motorcycle you have two wheels and two independent systems. Also, when the stopping process is completed, you must extend your leg and place it on the ground to prevent the motorcycle from tipping over. In the Category A course we learn to use the front and rear brakes as well as the clutch and throttle, but it takes time to master all four things smoothly. Dispensing braking force to the front and rear brakes and emergency stops is another challenge.
Use the entire lane
The topic is very controversial. Should a motorcyclist traveling relatively slowly ride on the edge of the road?
In my opinion no. Politeness is a great feature, but in practice I have been passed by car drivers many times, and a truck tire can not only damage the mirror, but also kill me.
It's better to drive in the middle of the lane. Of course, we are not talking about a situation where you are traveling on an expressway and your scooter is traveling at 45 km/h.
Get used to higher engine speeds
Motorcycles with a red box at 14,000 rpm are not special in the two-wheeler segment, but many newbies are afraid to ride at higher speeds. It is worth remembering that motorcycle engines are designed in such a way that they can easily withstand heavy loads for long periods of time.
Simply put, if you're not conserving fuel, you don't have to fear high speeds on the highway or expressway. You also have to get used to it and drive a few kilometers to make sure everything is ok.

Enduro
Structurally, these motorcycles are designed for use in rough terrain; these SUVs handle perfectly both on a flat road surface and in off-road conditions. Motorcycles are equipped with everything necessary to travel on public roads. Unlike cross-country motorcycles, “tailored” exclusively for sports, they are equipped with a headlight, turn indicators, dashboard, and passenger footrests. Additionally, trunks (luggage bags) can be installed
You can't imagine a better motorcycle for traveling!
Among the main technical characteristics of enduro it is worth highlighting the following:
- the frame is made of lightweight but extremely durable metal alloys
- the front wheel has a large diameter, at least 21 inches, to improve cross-country ability and control control;
- spoked front and rear wheels to reduce weight and improve shock absorption;
- the steering wheel is wide enough to easily control the car in motion;
- electrical wiring with reliable fastening of contacts;
- water or air-oil cooling to increase efficiency when driving at low speeds and in hot weather;
- brakes are implemented as simply as possible; disc structures are usually installed;
- powerful, torquey engine with smooth characteristics that works well in any speed range
conclusions
In our opinion:
- For children and novice bikers who are riding a motorized vehicle for the first time, a pit bike is better suited;
- For people who plan to seriously and for a long time immerse themselves in the world of motorsports, motocross motorcycles are suitable;
- travelers should pay attention to enduro
