Modern Russian motorcycles are in many ways inferior to well-known European and Japanese brands. However, they remain popular in rural areas, as well as among connoisseurs of classic domestic products. Similar equipment is also used in neighboring countries. You can often find tuned versions of the last century on the roads. Let's look at the domestic models that are currently being produced, as well as their features.

In total, in January - June 2021, Russians purchased 8,504 motorcycles. This is 10.4% more than a year earlier. But if in the first quarter the market doubled compared to last year, then in the second it decreased by 3 percent. The pandemic and the restrictions imposed had an impact. April was a disaster; sales then fell by a third.

More than 40% of the market is occupied by the three leading brands. The first place in terms of volume is occupied by the German BMW. From January to June, 1,293 motorcycles of this brand were sold, but sales decreased by 14.8% compared to last year. But sales of the Russian Racer motorcycle increased by 34.5%, the brand came close to the leader. Over the course of six months, Russians purchased 1,284 of these motorcycles. In third place is the Indian Bajaj. A total of 1,006 motorcycles of this brand were sold, 28.8% more than last year.

Domestic motorcycles attract consumers due to their price amid the crisis caused by the pandemic, says Petr Shkumatov, head of the ONF working group “Protection of the Rights of Motorists.” Prices for Racer, depending on the model, range on average from 40 to 150 thousand rubles, while BMW costs several times more. Racer now holds a market share of 15.1% compared to 12.4% a year earlier. By the way, sales of motorcycles from another Russian brand, Motolend, which came in fifth place in terms of volume, increased by 78% in the first half of the year. The market share of this brand increased from 4.8 to 7.7%.

Russia has a developed motorcycle community, which includes over 2 million people. At the same time, the motorcycle market itself is very limited. In the USSR, the motorcycle was a common means of transportation. The situation changed after almost all domestic factories producing motorcycles ceased operations and there were no mass domestic models left on the market, says auto expert Igor Morzharetto. As a result, motorcycles in Russia have become more of an entertainment item for wealthy people and are often used as a second or third vehicle in the family. “As a rule, a person already has a car, and buys a motorcycle for fun on weekends in the summer,” he notes. That is why, for example, more BMW motorcycles for 15-20 thousand dollars are sold in Russia than Chinese brands for a thousand dollars, the expert explains.

Despite the fact that motorcycle enthusiasts demonstrate consistency in their passions, one cannot count on further growth in sales. “Now the demand is obviously growing amid the quarantine, when showrooms were closed, people wanted to buy a motorcycle and could not do it. In May-June, they bought motorcycles to ride in the summer,” says the expert. After a crisis, sales usually increase, and then the market returns to its natural level relative to income, says Shkumatov. By the way, in monetary terms the market decreased by 5-10% compared to last year. At the same time, there may clearly be more sales of motorcycles in units, the expert concludes.

Now the situation is changing. Russian factories have successfully brought budget motorcycles to the market. In the expensive segment, domestic motorcycles will compete with foreign brands after 2022. By this time, Aurus motorcycles will appear on the market. As Denis Manturov, head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, previously stated, their production can be established in two years. According to him, this motorcycle will be completely electric.

Cross, enduro, sportbikes

The current season for the Russian motorcycle market will be remembered not only for increased consumer attention, but also for a change in the sales leader. If in recent years the German brand BMW has confidently led the sales of bikes in Russia, then at the end of last year the Russian brand Racer took first place in the ranking. Motorcycles of this brand from Chinese, Japanese and other components are produced by the company of the same name from Barnaul. According to Autostat, over the past year, 2.35 thousand Racer motorcycles were purchased on the Russian market, which is 46% more than in 2021.

BMW motorcycles were in second place, albeit with a minimal margin and with sales of 2.21 thousand units. Indians now hold third place in the list of the most popular bikes in Russia. We are talking about the Bajaj brand, which a few years ago was a dark horse for Russian bikers, but last year it took the lead and finished it with a good result for itself of 1.89 thousand units (an increase of +31%). Much of Bajaj's success is due to the fact that India is now the world leader in motorcycle sales, with such vehicles selling an impressive 20 million units a year. Against the backdrop of such significant domestic demand, Indian motorcycle manufacturers are now actively exploring foreign markets, including Russian.

Further, the top five leaders of the Russian motor market now include Motoland, a Russian company that assembles its models from foreign components (1.55 thousand, +73%), as well as a recognized legend of the world biker movement - the American brand Harley-Davidson (1.15 thousand ., +19%). “The leadership of Racer, Bajaj and Motoland is now ensured by more affordable prices than their competitors,” believes Dmitry Smolyakov, head of the import department of Avtodom KTM, the official distributor of KTM motorcycles in Russia. “But also more expensive BMW and Harley-Davidson motorcycles They have been represented on our market for a long time and have many fans.” These brands in Russia, according to the expert, have a wide range of models, they offer various support programs aimed at stimulating sales - these are trade-ins, preferential loans, and other offers. “According to our observations, the development of the motorcycle market is stimulated by the fact that a new generation is growing up who does not want to deal with cars and the very high cost of owning a car in large cities and chooses a motorcycle or scooter for the summer, and uses the metro and car sharing in the winter,” says Mr. Smolyakov.

As for the types of motorcycles, judging by research data, this season, as before, higher demand is observed for road motorcycles (50% of demand), cross-country and enduro classes account for about 25%, and sportbikes find buyers in 20% cases. A road or classic motorcycle is designed for everyday riding and is characterized by an upright riding position. One of the factors in the popularity of motorcycles in this class is reliability and the ability to travel long distances on it, representatives of Avito Auto believe. Motorcycles of the cross and enduro classes are off-road types and are designed to a greater extent for passing obstacles and moving over rough terrain. Moreover, if motocross bikes are practically impossible to use in urban conditions, then enduro bikes are quite suitable for traveling on asphalt roads. Well, sports motorcycles are for lovers of drive. These models are distinguished by the greatest dynamics, forced engines and “embryonic” landing.

The production of this modification began in 2006. The unit is created on the basis of the “Tourist” model. It is equipped with all-wheel drive and a side trailer. After connecting the stroller wheel, the car receives increased cross-country ability.

The remaining components and blocks are typical for most Urals. The bike is driven by a four-stroke two-cylinder engine, its power is 40 horsepower with a volume of 745 “cubes”. According to participants in the motor market, this season, such characteristics of motor vehicles as comfort, as well as new options that increase the safety of movement, will be in particular demand. “Most likely, this year Russians will give preference to domestic brands, as well as those manufacturers who regularly update their lineup - BMW, Suzuki, Yamaha, Aprilia,” predicts Maxim Ryazanov. “For example, the BMW Concept R 18 is expected to be released in 2021 /2 with an updated Big Boxer engine and a Yamaha MT-03 with modified suspension and tuning.” At the same time, in his opinion, special attention this summer will be given to technologically advanced models that are at least equipped with ABS to prevent wheel locking or have the ACC option - a function for controlling the speed of the bike in city traffic to prevent collisions.

“In the coming season, the most popular, in my opinion, will be naked-style motorcycles, convenient for traveling in a metropolis, and touring-class motorcycles for long trips,” says Andrey Kuzmin. He bases his prediction on the fact that today's consumers value comfort. “And, perhaps, this is the main point when choosing anything, not just motorcycles,” continues Mr. Kuzmin. “This summer, as before, the demand for motorcycles will be determined by fashion and the financial capabilities of its owner. Today, there is no specific connection to the most iconic models among motorcycle enthusiasts. A suitable model can be selected for any budget, and a noticeable trend in motorcycle clothing is that it is becoming more and more similar to ordinary clothing.”
