Ski-Doo Expedition 600 SDI. Wide means right

BRP snowmobiles will be an excellent option for use in Russian conditions. The models are highly reliable, able to move on loose snow and operate in severe frosts, which makes them very popular among domestic consumers. The production of BRP equipment is carried out by the legendary Canadian concern Bombardier Recreational Product (Bombardier), one of the leaders in the production of snowmobiles. The brand's products are characterized by excellent quality, comfort and advanced characteristics.

The BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 is a classic snowmobile with an affordable price and convenient operation. The equipment is suitable for use in open areas or forest areas. The car easily overcomes snow of great height and different consistency thanks to a specially adjusted suspension, and a comfortable seat and backrest ensure comfortable movement in any situation. The second seat can be removed if necessary. Thanks to the high-performance unit, the snowmobile is able to cope with tasks of increased complexity and pull sleds with a large load.

    Modifications

    1. BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 is the basic version of the series. The device is available with 2 front suspension options - telescopic and lever. The basic version is equipped with a telescopic suspension, which is ideal for using the snowmobile as a “workhorse”. BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 has the best cross-country ability among the models in the series and is ideal for use in Russian forests.
    2. The BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 SUV is equipped with a wishbone suspension, which is used on most modern snowmobiles. This option has better controllability. The wishbone suspension makes the ride smoother. However, the design features lead to the fact that various objects, stumps and branches periodically get caught on it. In this regard, it is inferior to the simpler telescopic suspension.
    3. BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 HO E-TEC – modification with an upgraded E-TEC engine.
    4. BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT ACE has a modified design and a modified engine of the Rotax 600 ACE 4TEC ACE 600 model. The snowmobile is excellent for use in extremely low temperatures.
    5. The BRP Ski-Doo Skandic SWT 600 is one of the best snowmobiles in its class. The main differences compared to the basic version are the presence of advanced shock absorbers, universal suspension, a new engine and an enlarged track. Such innovations make the model even more powerful, cross-country and stable while maintaining efficiency at a high level.

    The basic package includes the following options:

    • passenger seat with backrest;
    • electric starter;
    • fuel level indicator;
    • heated handles;
    • speedometer;
    • rearview mirror;
    • towbar;
    • tachometer (optional).

    The BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 series is a classic in the snowmobile segment. An affordable, simple and reliable snowmobile will be an excellent assistant in the taiga forest or in open fields with deep snow.

    A year passed, and again we saddled the Bombardier ski-tracked carriage. The new snowmobile turned out to be twice as powerful as its predecessor (see “Turbo”, 2004, No. 2). Meet the Ski-Doo Skandic SUV WT 600.

    Since 1926, self-taught inventor Joseph-Armand Bombardier devoted his life to building snowmobiles, which brought him worldwide fame. In 1957, Bombardier first began serial production of lightweight machines, which gave birth to a whole family of modern “snow motorcycles” with the Ski-Doo logo. More and more snowmobiles are being driven across the vast expanses of Siberia. It's worth reminding

    Caterpillar "under the saddle"

    Everything is relative

    A year ago, we got a Skandic SWT 500 with a Super Wide Track (61 cm) and a 55-horsepower half-liter air-cooled engine. And now the water-cooled Rotax (all Bombardier snowmobiles are equipped with Austrian engines) already produced 110 “horses” on a 50.8-centimeter track. The car now simply “shoots” out of the snowdrift. A two-stroke engine (600 cc) in a package with a 2-band variator serves as a source of powerful traction and is capable of accelerating a snowmobile far beyond “hundreds” without strain. As before, in addition to the low and high gear ranges, “reverse” is provided. The entire power unit is covered with a lightweight plastic fairing hood with air intake “nostrils” and elements of thermal and sound insulation. The black “face” of the fairing is crowned with twin headlights and a transparent “wind deflector” - it is higher than on sports models. This time the dashboard is fully equipped. Here, along with four indicator lamps and a speedometer, a tachometer appeared - like on the Grand Touring. By the way, the long-travel wishbone suspension is softer than the previous telescopic one. The car is also similar to an elite Grand Touring thanks to its comfortable seat and backrest. The main controls are assembled on the motorcycle steering wheel: on the right is the “gas” and a red emergency engine stop button, and on the left is the hydraulic brake lever with a parking position lock. Gears are switched with a “poker” under the left hand. But thanks to the continuously variable transmission, you only have to shift occasionally. In range I - towing or descending a mountain. Otherwise, “two” is the main mode for a snowmobile. And reverse – if necessary. So your legs are completely free. Freedom is dictated by unusual snowmobiling techniques, especially in extreme conditions.

    Features of riding

    He jumped into the saddle, started the engine with the key (or the starting handle) and pressed the trigger. Skandic obediently glides over virgin snowdrifts, as if on a well-worn road, leaving behind a snowstorm and a ski-track trail. The cross-country ability is excellent. Controllability is a little more complicated. Turning in deep snow requires special steering techniques. If you try to turn sharply without slowing down the engine speed, the snowmobile will fall on its side and sink into the snow. At low throttle, relying only on the steering wheel, you write out huge radii for a long time, never getting to the desired point. And on the slopes it will generally drag you somewhere into the bushes. Reverse gear helps, but it cannot be abused, otherwise the car will begin to dig in. But by balancing your own weight, you can perform miracles of high-speed driving. This is where leg freedom and arm length are needed. You can easily get out of a seemingly inevitable capsize “yachtsman style”, rolling over to the side opposite from the collapse and leveling the car. Wide footrests help this. However, due to inexperience, it doesn’t take long to get bogged down head over heels. Then accelerate - don’t accelerate, but until you trample the snowmobile around the perimeter, you are unlikely to get out of the snow captivity.

    In a fast turn

    It's hard to study

    And when the difficulties of learning are over, then oh how wonderful it is to rush across the snow-covered plain! But the high-speed climb up a steep mountain is especially good. The car soars to the top with such ease that it takes your breath away. The descent is no less exciting, and if you take precautions when sliding down in a low gear, everything will go fine.

    And in general, when driving such a powerful snowmobile, you cannot fall into euphoria and rush headlong. It is necessary to calculate the trajectory of movement in advance. And in any case, it is forbidden to resort to warming agents from the series of “peculiarities of the national…”. But after an active holiday (in the classic “Buldakov” manner), it’s not a sin to raise a pile for the excellent Skandic SUV WT 600 snowmobile – and for its owner.

    It so happened that when the editors make a field trip, they spend it with double benefit. First, a day outdoors. And secondly, it takes place in an extreme environment. This time we had to conquer a stylish Bombardier snowmobile, bright black, which looked very menacing against the white background of the snow field. The appearance of the snowmobile does not deceive, because hidden underneath is a 110-horsepower engine that keeps the driver in constant suspense.
    To be honest, it's simply impossible to drive a Bombardier in peace. But on the other hand, it’s nice to feel under you a whole “herd of horses” that carry you across the virgin soil at great speed. At first glance, driving a snowmobile is easy, especially when the person in front of you is not a beginner: everything about him is so relaxed and beautiful. However, once in the “saddle”, your idea of snowmobiles radically changes. And some people refuse to ride after the first experience. It’s quite understandable, since even in more than 20 degrees below zero, you’ll break seven sweats within 10 minutes. In fact, skill and dexterity are what will allow you to conquer the restive “horse”.

    The main differences between the current Bombardier and last year's are different shock absorbers, liquid cooling of the engine and, of course, its power.

    The scope of application of the conqueror of snow fields is very wide: to go with the whole family on week-long rides in nature - or to hunt fast-running animals with friends, etc. But you'll have to splurge on gasoline; but, as they say, you have to pay for pleasure.

    Irina Kabanova has been driving since 1997, driving a Daewoo Racer
    The winter forest, alluring with the whiteness of the snow cover, froze in a frosty stupor. Peace and quiet... Suddenly a ringing sound appears somewhere in the distance. It gets stronger and stronger, and then a car flies out. Snowmobile! He blasts the snow surface with pairs of skis and rushes past, disappearing around the bend. And winter silence sets in again. Only two tracks remind of the car that just rushed by.
    A year later, we gathered in the same place, with the same cheerful company, to ride a snowmobile. But the snowmobile is now completely different: powerful and fast. Ski-Doo snowmobile from the Canadian concern Bombardier. Motor 110 hp and speed up to 140 km/h - very serious. It is no longer just a sophisticated tourist device, but rather a sports and entertainment device, intended primarily for those who consider themselves professionals. It is not cheap and requires a trained driver. The optimal power-to-weight ratio is just right for those who like to draw patterns in snow-covered spaces. Make way, snow!

    The handling of a snowmobile resembles that of a modern scooter. But on the move, it most likely behaves like a motorcycle with a sidecar: the driver also has to control the car in a turn with the help of body roll. And here those who are more respectable have an advantage. And slender people have a chance of not being able to cope with such a serious machine and lying on their side. Don't expect the snowmobile to go where you want it right away. To operate it, you need skill, which comes after a few minutes of driving. A powerful engine, a comfortable seat for the passenger, a spacious and durable trunk basket - everything for thorough weekend outings for pleasure and adventure. For long trips in comfort - how comfortable they are on a frosty day.

    Let's consider myself lucky. The first time you try not to get on some tortured “buran”, the engine of which is trying to stall in the middle of the forest, but right away on a Bombardier! In addition, the snowmobile's engine is equal in power (although not in torque) to my Honda; it is much steeper in speed, which in itself inspires respect.
    To be honest, it never even occurred to me how many dangers the miracle machine is fraught with. For example, a snowmobile can “sit down.” Moreover, where there is no cellular communication a priori. Special thanks to the Finns for the phone, without which I would probably still be crying in the clearing near Klyuchi. But everything is banal: you don’t immediately get used to the constant drift (not skidding!) with which the device goes in sharp turns on virgin soil. As a result, in one of the turns I almost ran into a tree. Having stopped in time and without even thinking, I turn on the “rear” and give it “gas”. The snowmobile begins to slowly settle. I turn on I (there are only 2 gears, and “one” practically does not work) and slowly increase the speed. Bombardier quickly sinks into the snow, and the understanding comes that further attempts to get out are pointless. Nevertheless, I repeat the operation and bury the car right up to the steps.

    With the thought: “Eh! I’ll push once and everything will be fine!” I decisively step off the step and... fall into the snow almost waist-deep. The annoying circumstance does not stop me: I begin to push. If anyone has heard the story of soldiers selflessly pushing against a tank, he will quite reasonably compare the two comical situations. A minute later, Vladimir Novitsky arrives to help. Joint efforts, alas, do not produce any results. And only the owner of the snowmobile, with a sly look, stomping around it and carefully working the accelerator, hangs on one of the steps and brings the car out of immobility.

    After “training” in the snow, driving a snowmobile seems easy. On one handle there is gas, on the other there is brake. Transmission with variator: forward - only 2 speeds, of which only one should be used.

    At the same time, the simplicity of control contrasts with the complexity of the suspension. Even if you look for a long time at the intricacy of shock absorbers and levers (not entirely professional, but accurately reflects reality), you are still unlikely to understand the algorithm of operation.

    One of the disadvantages of a snowmobile is the abundance of smoke, and when parked, all of it ends up in the nose. It’s quite unusual for a motorist, and after a motorcycle, you probably won’t even notice it.

    On the control panel there was an inconspicuous but extremely useful button - seat heating. As it turned out, the heating is designed for light frost. In any case, it didn't get hot. But it still felt warm. It’s a pity that they haven’t yet come up with a nasal warmer - it certainly won’t hurt. Even at low speeds - 50-60 km/h - you stop feeling your own face; not long before frostbite. You have to choose between speed (and therefore pleasure) and “saving face.” By the evening it became clear that my balance was strongly shifted towards the first point.

    When talking about a snowmobile, how can you keep silent about jumping? They are probably the most exciting thing in the whole story. We found a natural springboard (a steep slope of a ravine) and tested our strength on it. The amazing feeling of weightlessness directly at the exit from the ravine is even more terrible the closer the springboard is. The slope turned out to be very difficult, and the probability of making a jump not forward, but tumbling backwards - due to the steepness of the slope - was considerable. And yet, not a single attempt was crowned with a complete lift off the ground. It’s unclear whose weight—mine or the snowmobile’s—is to blame. I think it's him.

    Engine

    The BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 is equipped with a 2-stroke air-cooled gasoline engine, which allows it to withstand increased loads. The engine is lightweight and has high fuel efficiency. Thanks to air cooling, the snowmobile can be operated even on ice, since there is no radiator system with coolant that requires snow. Two carburetor systems effectively dose the mixture, and cooling is carried out by counter-air flow and a fan.

    Thanks to the electric starter, starting the engine is extremely simple even at sub-zero temperatures. The power plant has a large reserve of torque, which allows the snowmobile to overcome the most difficult sections of the route.

    Motor characteristics:

    • working volume – 597 cc;
    • rated power - 90 hp;
    • number of cylinders – 2.

    The fuel tank capacity is 42 liters, which allows you to drive more than 200 km without refueling. The oil tank holds 2.5 liters.

    Almost everyone talks about versatility these days. Everyone wants a universal car, a universal computer, universal clothing, etc. Snowmobiles are also not lagging behind in their development, especially snowmobiles with wide tracks. Today a few words about the Ski-Doo Expedition REV-XU 600 SDI

    A completely new device, which appeared this year, is based on a 50 cm wide track. Thanks to the new chassis, the developers managed to make it as controllable as a snowmobile with a narrow track. What were the problems? With Wide Track snowmobiles, they usually had problems with handling on the trails, since the relatively heavy rear suspension and low specific pressure of the track on the ground provoked drift of the track when moving. Today, many manufacturers, thanks to various technical tricks, have, by and large, gotten rid of this problem. Of course, there are still nuances. Ski-Doo solved this problem in its own way.

    The Expedition 600 SDI features the REV-XU frame, which gives the sled proper weight distribution and a low center of gravity. At the same time, the chassis is light in weight, which has a beneficial effect on the weight of the entire snowmobile. The powerful 600 cc (594.4 cm3) 2-stroke engine is also lightweight, naturally developed by Rotax, and has a power of 117 hp. With. It is equipped with an injection system and eR.AVE valves, which in turn gives an increase in power and torque. The engine is interesting and has good performance both at low and medium speeds, and at maximum speed.

    Overall weight has been reduced by more than 20 kg compared to the previous Expedition. It seems like a trifle, considering the weight of the new snowmobile is 286 kg, but an experienced person will immediately feel it.

    The SUV-40's dual A-arm front suspension makes it easy to control the snowmobile in almost any conditions, as long as you don't go too far and push the throttle when you shouldn't. Still, a snowmobile is a source of increased danger...

    Price

    The cost of the new snowmobile of the BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 series (improved modifications) starts from 799,900 rubles.

    There are quite a lot of used options available. Average cost:

    • BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 (2006-2008) – 320,000-480,000 rubles;
    • BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 HO E-TEC (2011-2013) – 630,000-790,000 rubles;
    • BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 Ace (2011-2013) – 670,000-810,000 rubles.

    Owner reviews

    • Oleg_76: The classic BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 is an inexpensive and fast car. I liked that the snowmobile is equally good both on vacation and at work. At the same time, the device consumes relatively little (approximately 18-22 l/100 km). Previously exploited by Taiga. With the worst parameters, the consumption was approximately the same. I like absolutely everything about the BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600: interesting design, cross-country ability, indestructible suspension, good traction and speed. The snowmobile is very stable and soft regardless of the conditions. So far I’m completely satisfied with this model (I’ve owned it for 4 years).
    • Snow expert: I have been using the BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 for almost 5 years. During this time, I made several difficult trips across the tundra, and everywhere the snowmobile was at its best. In terms of dimensions, the equipment is not the smallest, but due to its well-thought-out design and special tricks when driving, it was possible to drive in any place. Protection of the bottom and bumper helped to avoid breakdowns. Engine elasticity and fuel efficiency are a separate issue. In this regard, few can compare with the BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 model. The car climbed absolutely everywhere (probably the presence of a low gear also helped). Disadvantages were observed only in cold weather: whistling of the rollers, vibrations and creaking in the suspension.
    • Kitaev: BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 E-TEC is an incredibly reliable machine. The average length of my trip was 150-170 km. The build quality and materials of the snowmobile are excellent. Nothing rattles, knocks or scratches. Since the beginning of operation, I noticed only one problem - oil was leaking a little through the tank plug. After installing the rubber band, I solved it. It doesn’t even make sense to compare with Yamaha (it simply doesn’t have similar models). The only competitor is the BRP Lynx Yeti (same brand). For the forest, the Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 E-TEC is the best option.
    • Murmansk resident: BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 Ace is a hunter’s dream. In 2.5 years I drove almost 3500 km on it. Of course there were breakdowns. After 1000 km, the gearbox began to act up and an incomprehensible knocking sound appeared. I had to take it to service. Also at the end of the second year the fan fuse and headlight had to be replaced. Otherwise the device is very reliable. It is always easy to drive (highway, forest, deep snow). At the same time, efficiency and low noise levels are maintained regardless of the speed limit and conditions. The BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 Ace is head and shoulders above any domestic equipment. The main disadvantage of a snowmobile is its too high cost.
