Characteristics of “Ski doo” snowmobiles and their features

The BRP Ski-Doo Expedition SE 1200 4-TEC is a high-performance touring snowmobile that is in demand on the global market. Before us is the 2021 model, designed for professional users who value comfort, convenience, functionality and reliability. This is exactly what the car in question is, with a conservative appearance. The stylish design of the machine remains true to the corporate concept of BRP, and is practically no different from most modern snowmobiles of the famous company. The Skido Expedition 1200 BRP model has received innovative technologies to facilitate operation, and also has proven technical solutions from its predecessors. Despite this, many shortcomings have been eliminated, and undeniable advantages have been added. This model is suitable for professionals and outdoor enthusiasts for whom speed, maneuverability and high maneuverability are important. With this snowmobile you can go on long trips, and without fear of moving in the wilderness with obstacles. The BRP Skido Expedition 1200 is a universal snowmobile that has received a lot of technical advantages compared to its closest analogues.

The Skido Expedition 1200 snowmobile has successfully passed all factory endurance tests, and this has been confirmed by numerous owners who operate the machine on an ongoing basis and subject it to various loads - on high-speed and well-worn roads, as well as in deep snow. Such high performance was achieved thanks to high-quality components in the chassis, which can be described as rugged and durable. Based on this, the undeniable advantage of this snowmobile can be considered versatility and adaptation to harsh climatic conditions. As mentioned above, this is facilitated by a powerful chassis, namely the front and rear suspensions, which we will consider in more detail.

Engine

The model is familiar to users from other BRP products. This power unit has significant updates. The unit is distinguished by high traction functionality, which appeared due to significant torque: with a volume of 1.2 liters, the output is 90 hp.

Inside there are three cylinders in a four-stroke arrangement. The functionality works well especially against the backdrop of outdated variations. Due to the components, the endurance of the internal combustion engine has significantly increased. The advantage of the unit is liquid cooling, this is part of the EFI fuel system, which is replaced here with inverter injection. It has an updated system, replacing the old-fashioned carburetor. Air conditioning perfectly protects all the fundamentals of the internal combustion engine from overheating. Thanks to this element, the system does not suffer a thermal attack during overloads, although this was previously possible at the maximum speed of the power unit.

Another advantage of the model is the electric starter, which is included even in the basic configuration of the product. To eliminate emergency situations, a second manual starter is provided.

For the operation of the power unit, a variator with high and low gears was installed; the basic package includes reverse and neutral modes. The snowmobile is equipped with four gears, which are characterized by a smooth ride thanks to proprietary eDrive technology.

Transmission

The steering of the snowmobile is attractive, and the ergonomics are especially well designed. For example, the arrangement of levers and switches is very comfortable. Even during extreme driving, there is no need to reach for them; everything is at the driver’s fingertips.

The steering mechanisms are closely linked to the driving position; the parts can be changed into four positions even in the basic configuration. Professional users can change the position from sitting to standing and vice versa while riding.

  • Main variable speed pulley – e Drive 2;
  • Secondary variable speed pulley C, fast QRS response;
  • Mechanical reversible system;
  • Hydraulic brakes, stainless steel reinforced hoses.

Suspension

The proprietary design with Montion Control shock absorbers is able to overcome difficult obstacles in the form of deep snow, under which solid objects can be hidden. Air springs are installed at the rear of the system, which provide an aerodynamic effect.

The skido heavy snowmobile 1200 produces the best off-road performance, even when compared with analogues. The chassis installed here will make movement comfortable on any surface.

  • Front suspension – RAS 2;
  • Motion Control front shock absorbers;
  • Suspension travel – 21.0 cm;
  • Rear suspension – SC-5U;
  • Suspension shock absorbers – Montion Control ACS;
  • Suspension travel – 34 cm.

So, in the front part there is a proprietary RAS 2 suspension with Motion Control shock absorbers, which have a stroke of 210 mm. This is enough to overcome difficult obstacles in deep snow, under which large rocks and other obstacles may be hidden. As for the rear suspension, it is represented by the SC -5U chassis with the same Motion Control ACS shock absorbers as in the front. Thanks to air springs, a high aerodynamic effect is achieved, due to which the rear suspension travel was increased to 340 mm. This is a good indicator compared to analogues, and has a beneficial effect on the off-road features of the snowmobile. The owners of this car do not have to worry about breakdowns in the suspension, and have the opportunity to move comfortably on any road, because such a chassis smoothes out absolutely any unevenness that is encountered on a long journey. As for the steering, the developers paid special attention to it. So, in this case, the designers improved the ergonomics and positioned the levers and switches in such a way that you don’t need to reach for them, and so that there is no feeling of discomfort during extreme driving. To do this, we had to pay attention to the design of the entire workspace, and this includes not only the steering, but also the driving position and other features. The steering mechanism has four height adjustment positions - thanks to this, it is possible to move in a sitting or standing position, which is very important for professional users. The steering wheel can be finished and painted in any color depending on the consumer's preferences. Coming to the seat, it has a two-seater layout with the option of a rear passenger. But if necessary, the seat can be made into a single seat - in this case, the rear seat is removed, and instead there is space for additional cargo. In addition, another trunk is provided under the driver's seat. It is well sealed and protected from moisture and corrosion. You can store various items in it, such as food, spare parts, refill canister, and fishing and hunting accessories.

What is the fuel consumption

The fuel and oil consumption of the Brp 1200 Expedition snowmobile is unimportant except for racers and extreme sports enthusiasts. This indicator is of interest to ordinary users of equipment, especially those who use a snowmobile in everyday activities. Even in this field, the unit differs from a car that moves on asphalt. Information on consumption is relative, therefore it is not officially declared by manufacturers.

Power consumption is related to the technical condition and characteristics of the environment:

  • on compacted snow there will be a small flow rate;
  • enlarged along the loose base.

The highest consumption will be observed in heavy snow.

An important component for consumption is the load; with good equipment it will be maximum. The load adjustment is quite wide; you can reduce consumption:

  • timely transmission switching;
  • exception of overload;
  • smooth acceleration;
  • adjusting the carburetor system.

Experienced users travel long distances on empty tanks.

User manual

Operating complex equipment is impossible without studying the instructions. You should pay particular attention to the maintenance rules. Failure to comply with standard regulations may result in injury or death along the way.

Basic rule: a snowmobile should not move on streets and roads; even in off-road conditions, the snowmobile driver must obey the general rules along with other vehicles.

Preparing a snowmobile for operation is as follows:

  • removing the shipping brackets and removing the frame;
  • removing the protective casing from the variator;
  • installing a rear light;
  • glass installation;
  • installation and fastening of the backrest on the seat;
  • adjustable steering wheel and lock it in a comfortable position;
  • installation of a splash guard.

The check consists of making sure that there is oil in the gearbox, it is also necessary to inspect the external threaded connections, and then the fuel tank will need to be refilled. The electric start battery must be brought into working condition, the wires from the electrical harness must be connected to it according to the diagram:

  • Red to terminal+;
  • Black to terminal -.

Particular attention should be paid to the fuel mixture. An incorrect ratio of gasoline and oil will lead to problems in the power unit. Also, malfunctions may occur when using non-recommended fuel grades; many technical indicators of the snowmobile will significantly decrease.

Spare parts price

The most optimal cost of spare parts in online stores, the assembled cooling system 12M1558 will cost about 800 rubles, camshafts and timing chain

05R1558 will cost about 3,000 rubles, the 04R1558 cylinder assembly can be found on the supplier’s official website for 88,000 rubles.

The peculiarity of delivery of spare parts from an online store is that weight is included in the cost of the goods. For example, from the supplier to the warehouse the amount will be approximately 900 rubles for each kg of weight. Delivery throughout Russia is possible, but is paid separately.

The delivery time for goods is quite approximate. They usually depend on the availability of products in the warehouse, as well as the performance of logistics companies in a particular region.

Snowmobile BRP Expedition SE 1200 4-TEC

Unfortunately, spring still doesn't come. Snow, cold. I will remember this winter then.

This winter season, my friend brought a BRP Expedition SE 1200 4-TEC snowmobile to our house.

A big, huge snowmobile. It is utilitarian in the BRP line, but in terms of the set of options and functionality it is a good touring snowmobile. It is double. But the three of us rode as a family. We easily fit in our size (I’m far from thin). And it was comfortable.

The caterpillar is wide - 50 cm. Cross-country ability is very good. Never got stuck anywhere. But to be fair, this year I found decent powder only once in one place. Unfortunately, at least some snow fell in our area only towards the end of winter.

This snowmobile is very powerful. 130 hp When you press the gas sharply, it rears up. Crazy acceleration (especially if there is one, and more than one). I would say there is too much power for it :). This engine (four-stroke) is heavy but moderately economical. Liquid cooled.

But there are also disadvantages of a four-stroke engine - due to its heaviness, you can’t ride it in the mountains. It won't rise. Those. It’s easy to take on an obstacle from acceleration, but if you stop on a snow-covered slope, there is a high probability of burying yourself or falling on your side.

If we talk about riding together, well, all snowmobiles are probably about the same when there is also a passenger riding. It becomes more difficult to manage. It’s unnecessary to go where the driver is trying to go. A small slope (i.e., even 5 percent) - and I have to hang out with all my weight to compensate for the downward drift of the snowmobile. When alone it's easier. But probably - this snowman has such a feature - it is not light.

Having ridden it for a whole season, I came to the conclusion that this snowmobile is ideal for long trips along channels, rivers (of which we have a huge number) and fields (without a lot of snow). I live in such a wonderful place where there is everything. Including forests. In the forest you need to be a little pumped up, you have to steer a lot - it’s not always easy on it. (But I’m used to it and I like riding in the forest, maybe even more than in the fields.)

It is on the ducts that you can accelerate to maximum speed. I managed to accelerate to 155 km/h.

A fuel tank of 45 kilometers - according to rough measurements - is enough for 200 km exactly.

My average consumption was approximately 20 liters per 100 km.

But this snowmobile has a minus (as far as I read on forums, even new ones) - the fuel sensor does not work correctly. If it’s less than half the tank, it may even show 0. But I solved this problem simply - before leaving, I always had a full tank and reset the mileage counter.

Among the advantages, we can also note the rear seat and rear passenger handle holders. It’s very, very comfortable for the children, my wife, and me to sit there. The handles are heated and also have protection against branches (also a useful thing).

This snowmobile has a plastic trunk (optional) It is quite large and rigid. (Damn, two thermoses were dented!). But for a snowmobile, such a trunk is somewhat burdensome. (I felt it the hard way. When the snowmobile turned over 3-4 times at high speed, the trunk cracked a little - not critical, but it’s probably better if it’s soft.) A snowmobile still gets into such troubles from time to time.

This snowmobile has a fairly good windshield (plastic) - high. It is composed of 3 parts. In principle, the entire “hood” is very easy to disassemble - it consists of plastic parts. It's simple, grooves + rubber bands for attaching all parts. (I figured out all this when an accident occurred - the snowball spun around its axis 3-4 times. After turning over, almost all the parts scattered to the sides. But then, almost as if nothing had happened, I collected everything and moved on.)

This particular snowmobile has traveled 10,600 km at the time of writing. He drove through 5 winters, I think. Those. quite respectable both mileage and age.

But it is not inferior (except for the gloss of a new snowflake) in relation to other snowmobiles. Works like a clock. I really liked it.

Its only significant drawback is its price.

700 t.r. for a new snowmobile.

But I would like to buy equipment once and for a long time, I want to survive the “buying of a new snowmobile.” But 700t.r. - that's a lot for me for a snowmobile.

So I started looking for alternatives.

As a good alternative for myself, I personally found the Arctic Cat BearCat Z1 (or Z1 BearCat Limited Edition). And the more budget Arctic Cat BearCat 570XT on the same utilitarian platform. They are cheaper than BRP. There is still time to think and buy. (True, now there is a new torment - an ATV!)

Below are photos of the BRP Expedition SE 1200 4-TEC snowmobile:

First ride on a snowmobile. I found a huge, relatively flat field and practiced steering.

The temperature was -2. It was cloudy. The weather is ideal for snowmobiling. (For walking on a four-stroke snowmobile :))

You can't speed up much on the field. Still, there is always the danger of a stump appearing or a sudden change in the landscape.

We stopped somewhere, don’t understand. The white color of the front part may be a controversial decision. (If the driver also dresses in white
