The Honda CBR 250 motorcycle is one of the best “devices” created by Honda in the 250 cc category. This lightweight sports motorcycle, which has a 6-speed gearbox and is capable of producing 45 horsepower, will not leave all sports class fans indifferent.
Every year this model was subject to changes. In 1988, instead of one large headlight, two small twin headlights were installed, the chain was reduced in size, and the fuel pump also underwent changes.
In 1989, the speed limiter on the motorcycle was set at 185 kilometers per hour.
In 1990-1991, the Honda CBR 250 R motorcycle received a new design that almost completely changed its appearance (a new, more aggressive aluminum frame and a swingarm borrowed from the NSR 250 R model). The motorcycle also received double 276 mm. front brake discs and underwent changes to the fuel system.
Initially, the new models were sold only in Japan; later the Honda CBR 250 R appeared in Australia. At the moment, this motorcycle can be found in many countries, including Russia.
Appearance
Grace is literally felt in the lines of this car. To some, however, the mirrors may seem large. However, this quality should be considered an advantage, because it adds visibility, and therefore convenience and safety. The tank rises high, rising steeply on the driver's side and falling more gently at the front.
The Bike is distinguished by its exhaust pipe design. In later versions it is also interesting, but the 2011-2013 models are particularly original. The result is a large cone that evokes some kind of cosmic associations. The wheels are alloy, not pretentious. Otherwise, the proportions are classic for a sportbike. It is noticeable that the design gravitates a little towards the designs of the last century. This manifests itself in not very smooth, and in some places frankly angular forms.
Competitors
The following were able to provide healthy competition to this bike:
- Yamaha YZ250 - a motorcycle with an aluminum frame;
The following couple of Japanese developed their versions based on a steel frame:
- Kawasaki KX250 - half-duplex steel.
- Suzuki RM 250 - steel duplex.
The bikes were produced at approximately the same time, belonged to the same class, and did not differ significantly in design. The choice between them was mainly determined by buyer preferences.
Comfort
The progressive suspension at the rear makes the ride more enjoyable. It is important to note that previously Japanese bikes could not afford this. Apparently, rider comfort has begun to occupy a more significant position among the priorities of manufacturers from this country. As a result, the bike is comfortable to ride, unless, of course, you use the machine for off-road use.
Like any other sportbike, this is a motorcycle for a good track, and not for rough terrain. It is on the track that it will show its best properties: speed, maneuverability and, at the same time, smooth dynamics. However, the speed here will only impress beginners. But this makes the model a suitable motorcycle for beginners in this class.
Reviews from Honda CBR 250 owners
According to numerous reviews from owners, the motorcycle is comfortable enough for city driving. The weight of the bike does not cause problems, although for many it seems too big. It doesn't cause any problems in parking either.
On a country road, the low engine power will not allow you to frolic. The cruising speed of the motorcycle is approximately 120-130 km/h. But for moving from one point to another it is quite suitable. The passenger seat is quite comfortable. Of all the features of the motorcycle, one stands out. Even though the CBR 250 is considered a sports bike, it can actually handle light off-roading thanks to its light weight.

The engine power is low, but in the price category of the motorcycle it is difficult to wish for anything better. The available horsepower is quite enough for dense city traffic. The first gear accelerates the bike well and makes it possible to stand on the rear wheel, but acceleration occurs with jerks. Other transmissions in the gearbox are optimized in terms of their gear ratios just for city driving. In the city you have to switch less often. The volume of the gas tank and fuel consumption allow you to refuel quite rarely.
Standard rear view mirrors are inconvenient to use, so many owners replace them with others. For tourist trips, the car should still be equipped with a trunk. The brakes are quite effective in both rain and hot weather.

Dimensions and weight
Still, the Honda CBR 250 R is far from a cross-country motorcycle. Dimensions correspond to the class. The tank volume here is small, but considering the consumption it is enough. The saddle height is average. In general, it is impossible to say that the bike somehow stands out in size and weight from the general background.
Dimensions:
- tank – 13 l;
- ground clearance - 145 mm;
- curb weight – 164 kg (of which ABS – 3 kg);
- height – 1125 mm;
- width – 720 mm;
- length – 2035 mm;
- seat height – 780 mm.
The filling is well adjusted to the size and weight, thereby achieving perhaps boring, but balanced dynamics. This also facilitates maintenance, which, however, is complicated by the inaccessibility of spare parts.

Specifications
This sportbike is in many ways close to road motorcycles. This is understandable, because this is a weak technique for its class, perhaps entry-level. So you should treat the model’s parameters leniently, understanding that this is by no means an average sportbike.
Rear brakes | one disc, 220 mm |
Front brakes | one disc, 296 mm |
Rear suspension | pendulum, 104 mm |
Front suspension | telescopic fork, 118 mm |

Consumption | 4.16 l per 100 km |
Maximum speed is an advantage in this case. The bike is an entry-level budget model, which means it should not complicate the life of a beginner with its harsh sporty character. Hence the low fuel consumption. Convenient and economical. So the technical characteristics here are, perhaps, exactly what they should ideally be.
Honda engine
The Honda SBR 250 engine is designed to meet modern environmental requirements, has a high degree of boost and good fuel efficiency. To achieve such performance, engineers have done serious work to reduce internal friction. The main distinguishing feature of the power unit is high traction at low speeds. High power is obtained through a modern PGM-FI injection system.
Motor characteristics:

What do the owners say?
Some people like the fit better here than Kawasaki's Ninja. However, according to many reviews, the Honda's dashboard is better. There are simply more functions here. The tachometer is clearly visible, and the blue backlight is easy on the eyes and practical. But as far as dynamics are concerned, not everything is so simple.
According to the description of the owners, who have ridden such a bike for more than a year or two, the engine is not nearly as interesting as, for example, the Ninja. With the latter, the power increases so that it is felt, and there is practically no vibration. But with Honda... The sensations for a beginner may be pleasant, but for an experienced sport biker it will be boring.
IMPORTANT! Acceleration to 100 here is very slow for an average sportbike. Therefore, you should not expect that this motorcycle will become an acquisition for life. It’s good for training for a beginner, but the class itself assumes that a person needs a more and more powerful bike. This means that such models will always often appear on the secondary market, which is possible to take advantage of and purchase similar copies cheaper.
Judging by the photos and videos from this or that review, the car looks modest compared to many other representatives of the class. So, if you want to buy yourself a more stylish motorcycle, experts advise paying attention to models from Kawasaki. However, the taste and color...
The CBR 250 R is a good entry-level sports bike. The machine is suitable for those who require an uncomplicated representative of the class, with performance that meets modern requirements. Yes, after gaining experience, you will probably want to exchange the bike for something more interesting, but it is unlikely that selling this model on the secondary market will be a problem.
Modifications
Over the ten years of production, the base model Honda CBR 250 has undergone a number of changes, seven different modifications have been released. The classification of each new version was determined by an index in the digital chassis set. For example, when a motorcycle frame number began with MC14, this indicated the presence of a semi-fairing, an indivisible headlight and a double disc on the front brake.
- Modification from 1987, chassis number starts with MC17 - a full fairing is installed on the motorcycle.
- Version 1988, number MC19 - the double front brake disc was replaced with a single one of increased diameter.
- Modification of 1989, MC21 - minor changes. A regulator is installed on the injector, limiting the speed of the motorcycle to 185 kilometers per hour.
- 1991, chassis number starts with MC22 - significant changes, the model is undergoing restyling. A new frame made of composite aluminum appears, more rigid and technologically advanced. The front brake is again a double disc brake, but the diameter has been increased to 276 mm. The articulated pendulum rear suspension has a swing amplitude of 180 millimeters. The spoked wheels are replaced with cast aluminum ones. The dry weight of the motorcycle is reduced from 148 to 142 kilograms.
- Modification 1993, chassis number MC22-E. There are no design changes, but the color range of the manufactured motorcycles has been significantly expanded.
- The 1994 version, the frame number of the latest modification of the Honda CBR 250 bike starts with MC23. Fundamental changes affected the engine; power was reduced from 45 to 40 hp. pp., in connection with the law issued in Japan on the correspondence of engine cubic capacity to their power.
Flaws
According to reviews from owners, the Honda CR250R is distinguished by good reliability, but requires timely maintenance, however, like all its classmates.
As always, there were some downsides. These include:
- Dense arrangement of parts ; during repairs you will have to disassemble the entire motorcycle:
- Lack of crankcase protection . When jumping, it is possible to break the lid with sharp stones.
- High fuel consumption and small tank.
But they also call it difficult to find and repair individual parts.
and dignity
Without differing in any technical features, this bike has all the qualities of a thoroughbred cross-country bike.
Of course there are more advantages:
- Reliability of both individual parts and the bike as a whole.
- Adjustable suspension.
- Unpretentious in maintenance.
- A rarity for crossbreeds is a comfortable, ergonomic fit .
- Ease of operation.
They also note maneuverability, the ability to jump onto the highest curb and even slide down the stairs.
