Ski-Doo Sport 600 Carb Snowmobile Review

BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 is an excellent offer for adventure lovers in the northern regions of Russia. The machine is adapted to the harshest climatic conditions that exist in nature. This is confirmed by both successful factory tests and positive consumer reviews. The model in question is capable of moving on loose snow and works flawlessly in severe frosts. The fact is that in the production of the Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600, high-quality components are used, and the developer of the snowmobile is the Canadian concern Bombardier Recreational Product, which is one of the leaders in the production of such machines. The products of this legendary brand stand out for their high quality, comfort and innovative technical solutions.

So, the BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 is a classic snowmobile at an affordable price. The machine is easy to handle and suitable for driving in open areas and forest areas. This equipment can easily overcome a deep snowdrift, including snow of various consistencies - dry, loose, wet, compacted snow, etc. Good cross-country ability is due to a carefully tuned suspension, and the comfortable driver's seat and backrest can be “adapted” to any operator . The design also includes a second seat, which can be removed if desired. Overall, the high-performance BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 unit copes well with tasks of any complexity.

Let us note some features that distinguish this model from most competitors. Firstly, it is a adjusted center weight distribution and improved directional stability. We will also add a small mass of the entire structure here. These improvements had a beneficial effect on ease of control and maneuverability. The exterior of the car is made in accordance with the signature design concept of the Bombardier brand. Characteristic features of the BRP model range are a streamlined body and smooth lines. And secondly, the snowmobile of the same name is endowed with the following features for comfortable operation:

  1. The steering column is made of metal, with rubberized linings that improve the quality of the grip (so that your hands do not slip).
  2. Large windshield with good visibility and protection from strong winds and flying snow. Moreover, the heavy-duty glass can withstand impacts from falling branches.
  3. Hook towbar with locking device, necessary for transporting large loads.
  4. Heated grip function
  5. Adjustable driver's seat with luggage rack
  6. Rearview mirrors
  7. A set of control and measuring instruments and indicators.

Modifications

  1. The basic version of the WT 600 is available with two suspension modifications. So, you can choose a telescopic or wishbone front suspension. The basic package includes a telescopic suspension. Accordingly, wishbone suspension is offered as an option. In both cases, the snowmobile is able to overcome difficult off-road sections, but does it more gently in the case of a “lever” circuit.
  2. WT 600 SUV – modification with wishbone suspension. Such a machine is most in demand in forests and other hard-to-reach places where high maneuverability is required from a snowmobile. A distinctive feature of the lever suspension is its softness. A significant design flaw is that various stumps and branches cling to the levers, and as a result the suspension becomes clogged. In this case, the lever suspension is less reliable and durable than the more rigid telescopic suspension.
  3. WT 600 HO E-TEC is a machine with an updated E-TEC power unit.
  4. WT ACE is a modified snowmobile with a more durable design and a modified engine. This machine is suitable for extremely low temperatures.
  5. The SWT 600 is the best snowmobile from the family under consideration. This modification is equipped with advanced shock absorbers, universal suspension, a new power plant and massive tracks. As a result of these modifications, a powerful, comfortable and passable snowmobile with an impressive and “menacing” appearance was obtained.

Basic equipment elements:

  1. Passenger seat with adjustable backrest
  2. Electric starter
  3. Instruments showing fuel level, speed and mileage
  4. Rear view mirrors
  5. Towbar
  6. Heated grips and steering wheel.

Pros:

  1. Powerful and torquey engine
  2. Variety of chassis modifications, additional options
  3. Multifunctional seat with luggage rack
  4. There is a second seat
  5. Good handling and smooth ride.

Minuses:

  1. Heavy weight, noisy engine, vibrations
  2. Unreliable wishbone suspension
  3. High cost of imported spare parts
  4. High fuel consumption
  5. The engine is demanding on fuel quality.

Ski-Doo Sport 600 Carb Snowmobile Review

Ski-Doo Sport 600 Carb - a budget snowmobile for economical

Polaris and Ski-Doo are battling for supremacy in every market segment. In response to Polaris's successful selling RMK models, Ski-Doo released the super-long Summit X with the T3 package. The next round was between the AXYS and rMotion rear suspension-equipped MXZ and Renegade models. What's going on in the budget snowmobile segment?

Snowmobile Ski-Doo Sport 600 Carb

There is also an active confrontation here, not as fierce as among top models, but still, it takes place. Apparently Ski-Doo is trying to play against Polaris' budget Indy line. One example is the carbureted 2015 Ski-Doo Sport 600. It's amazing how much the buyer gets for a relatively small price. In this close battle against the Polaris Indy, Ski-Doo comes out on top.

Although the Polaris Indy sleds have a more powerful 2-stroke, 2-cylinder, 600cc direct injection engine, we consider the Ski-Doo machines to be a better buy.

Taking a look at the 2015 Ski-Doo Sport 600 Carb snowmobile, you understand that this model inherited the best basic components. Yes, it is not built on the latest REV-XS platform, but the XP aluminum chassis is good value for money. If you want a sled with an XS platform, then you should consider the TNT series, but you will have to pay more.

So, let's look further. The sled is powered by a 2-stroke, 2-cylinder Rotax engine model that predates the ETEC series. Producing 110 hp, the engine performs well in the high rev range and pulls off well at 3,800 rpm. Of course, we would prefer the modern Rotax ETEC to the 2-cylinder carbureted Sport 600. But such a less capricious engine would significantly undermine our budget. It’s better to invest a little and equip the existing engine with an electric starter.

And keep in mind that the Ski-Doo Sport 600 Carb with its 597cc Rotax twin-cylinder engine weighs just 300 pounds, giving it a good power-to-weight ratio.

In reality, the carbureted MXZ Sport 600 isn't as stiff as the MXZ X. The Sport isn't equipped with the latest suspension upgrades to keep its price down. The double A-arm front suspension does not have all the benefits of the RAS2. You still get a reliable suspension with 22.86 cm of travel. But since it's equipped with non-repairable steel Motion Control shocks, you'll have to strictly limit the number of bumps you jump over. These shock absorbers were developed primarily for touring snowmobiles. If you use them in harsh conditions, they quickly fail. You can, of course, redo the shock absorbers, but then it’s easier to choose the more expensive line of Ski-Doo snowmobiles.

The rear suspension is also of the old type—SC-5U. The proven suspension with Motion Control shocks has 38.1 cm of vertical travel. The SC-5U rear suspension design with gas shocks has been a big hit on Ski-Doo snowmobiles for years, only recently being inspired by the new rMotion suspension. In fact, the vertical suspension travel of this snowmobile is more than enough for a sports model. For example, the Polaris 600 Indy snowmobile, equipped with a similar rear suspension, has only 35.31 cm of travel, but it is equipped with gas-adjustable RydeFX MPV shock absorbers with an aluminum body.

How difficult it is to choose a budget model. What is more important - the engine? carburetor or electronic injection? SC-5U or rMotion?

If you're a budget-conscious buyer, the carbureted Ski-Doo Sport 600 is a great buy. Yes, you don't get much performance in the engine or suspension like you do in the MXZ X or TNT 600 E-TEC models. But from a price standpoint, the Ski-Doo Sport 600 Carb snowmobile is an excellent alternative. The sled has an excellent power to weight ratio and the suspension is great for long trips. Nor does the Ski-Doo Sport 600 look cheap. In the past, manufacturers very often reduced production costs by having a dull, lackluster, almost offensive appearance. Not this Ski-Doo.

The carburetor-equipped 2015 Ski-Doo Sport 600 looks neat. The body is painted black with yellow trim and an XP-P seat is installed. The upgraded aluminum handlebar has J-shaped grips for better grip. The 38 cm windshield gives the snowmobile a finished look.

The manufacturer tried to properly equip the Sport 600:

  • aluminum chassis REV-XP
  • 600cc 2-stroke Rotax engine
  • electronic reverse activated by button
  • Italian Brembo hydraulic brakes
  • rear suspension SC-5U with large vertical travel
  • Pilot skis

While the Ski-Doo Sport 600 Carb isn't as zippy as the MXZ X, we wouldn't want to take away from its ability. Sport owners will be able to test themselves and their snowmobile on the track. That's why it comes equipped with Brembo hydraulic brakes as standard. The 120-inch Camoplast Ripsaw track has 1.25-inch (3.17 cm) high lugs that allow the machine to corner at full speed. In fact, the Sport outperforms the Polaris 600 Indy here, which has only 0.91-inch (2.31 cm) lugs. Ski-Doo didn't skimp on the track.

When we look at the carbureted 2015 Ski-Doo MXZ Sport 600, we see a well-equipped machine that will suit both the novice driver and the veteran. The undeniable advantage of this snowmobile is its price.

Engine

A two-stroke gasoline engine with an air cooling system is responsible for performance. This unit can withstand high and extreme loads. Its distinctive features are compactness and low weight, as well as high fuel efficiency. Air cooling in this case is no less effective than liquid cooling. This has been proven in practice, because thanks to the air system you can even drive on ice. The design of such a system is simpler and easier to maintain, since it does not require a radiator. The two-carburetor system doses the mixture, and the principle of cooling is the operation of a fan, as well as a counter air flow. The presence of an electric starter allows for uninterrupted starting of the internal combustion engine in frosty weather. The power unit is endowed with a large reserve of torque, which has a beneficial effect on overcoming the most difficult road sections.

With a displacement of 0.6 liters, the power unit develops 90 horsepower. The two-cylinder design is compact and easy to maintain. High maintainability allows you to repair the car not only in the garage, but also in harsh climatic conditions. All thanks to the fact that a basic set of tools is enough for this, which is the prerogative of the basic package.

Reviews

  • Igor, Krasnoyarsk. I can call this snowmobile a classic, inexpensive and fast machine. In addition, it is very practical and repairable. Service does not take much time. The snowmobile performed well on vacation, as well as in working conditions. The equipment consumes about 20 liters per hour, and you can fill it with inexpensive 92-grade gasoline. I used to have a Taiga snowmobile, which the BRP cannot compare to, although the fuel consumption is about the same. In general, I liked the car in all respects - interesting appearance, cross-country ability, durable chassis, vigorous acceleration and high top speed. I've been using the snowmobile for four years now, and so far I'm happy with everything.
  • Nikolay, Vladivostok. I have been using this machine for more than five years. The device is used to its fullest extent. I've done several challenging rides on the tundra, and in such conditions the snowmobile has never let me down. It has a smart design and an off-road chassis that allows you to overcome difficult terrain. For example, this is the underbody protection, which has repeatedly saved the day. A separate topic is elasticity and acceleration dynamics. The car drives absolutely everywhere, for example between trees - this is largely due to the sharp steering and responsive reactions. The disadvantages are insignificant - mainly the whistling of the rollers, creaking and vibrations in the suspension. Does not affect reliability.
  • Boris, Murmansk region. I am of two minds about this snowmobile. On the one hand, this is an incredibly reliable device, capable of covering 150-170 kilometers without any problems. I would like to note the excellent build quality, the absence of noise and vibration. There is nothing knocking or rattling in the suspension. Even at the beginning of operation, one problem appeared - oil was leaking through the gas tank cap. In the end I decided to install a new rubber gasket and the problem went away. In terms of handling, the Ski-Doo WT 600 model is no worse than the Yamaha. This device is a good option for forest conditions. The materials are high quality, you can’t complain. There is support for 92 gasoline. But spare parts are not only expensive, they are also in short supply. This is a serious problem - especially in the event that unscheduled maintenance occurs. Fortunately, everything is fine so far. This is my second year using it.
  • Mikhail, Primorsky Krai. The BRP Ski-Doo Skandic WT 600 Ace snowmobile is a powerful and reliable assistant that I have owned for more than three years. Of course, during this time there were breakdowns. After all, the mileage exceeds 3500 km. After the 1st thousand, knocking noises appeared in the gearbox. Fortunately, the warranty has not yet expired, and I took it to the service center. The service people blamed it on careless operation, and I had to pay for repairs... There were no more such oddities. Handling is excellent - both on a snowy track, and in the forest, in deep snow, etc. The engine is quite noisy, but there is nothing to be done about it - design features. And yet, compared to domestic analogues, the WT 600 Ace looks much better, but costs much more.

A year passed, and again we saddled the Bombardier ski-tracked carriage. The new snowmobile turned out to be twice as powerful as its predecessor (see “Turbo”, 2004, No. 2). Meet the Ski-Doo Skandic SUV WT 600.

Since 1926, self-taught inventor Joseph-Armand Bombardier devoted his life to building snowmobiles, which brought him worldwide fame. In 1957, Bombardier first began serial production of lightweight machines, which gave birth to a whole family of modern “snow motorcycles” with the Ski-Doo logo. More and more snowmobiles are being driven across the vast expanses of Siberia. It's worth reminding

Everything is relative

A year ago, we got a Skandic SWT 500 with a Super Wide Track (61 cm) and a 55-horsepower half-liter air-cooled engine. And now the water-cooled Rotax (all Bombardier snowmobiles are equipped with Austrian engines) already produced 110 “horses” on a 50.8-centimeter track. The car now simply “shoots” out of the snowdrift. A two-stroke engine (600 cc) in a package with a 2-band variator serves as a source of powerful traction and is capable of accelerating a snowmobile far beyond “hundreds” without strain. As before, in addition to the low and high gear ranges, “reverse” is provided. The entire power unit is covered with a lightweight plastic fairing hood with air intake “nostrils” and elements of thermal and sound insulation. The black “face” of the fairing is crowned with dual headlights and a transparent “wind deflector” - it is higher than on sports models. This time the dashboard is fully equipped. Here, along with four indicator lamps and a speedometer, a tachometer appeared - like on the Grand Touring. By the way, the long-travel wishbone suspension is softer than the previous telescopic one. The car is also similar to an elite Grand Touring thanks to its comfortable seat and backrest. The main controls are assembled on the motorcycle steering wheel: on the right is the gas and red emergency stop button, and on the left is the hydraulic brake lever with a parking position lock. Gears are switched with a “poker” under the left hand. But thanks to the continuously variable transmission, you only have to shift occasionally. In range I - towing or descending a mountain. Otherwise, “two” is the main mode for a snowmobile. And reverse is optional. So your legs are completely free. Freedom is dictated by unusual snowmobiling techniques, especially in extreme conditions.

Features of riding

He jumped into the saddle, started the engine with the key (or the starting handle) and pressed the trigger. Skandic obediently glides over virgin snowdrifts, as if on a well-worn road, leaving behind a snowstorm and a ski-track trail. The cross-country ability is excellent. Controllability is a little more complicated. Turning in deep snow requires special steering techniques. If you try to turn sharply without slowing down the engine speed, the snowmobile will fall on its side and sink into the snow. At low throttle, relying only on the steering wheel, you write out huge radii for a long time, never getting to the desired point. And on the slopes it will generally drag you somewhere into the bushes. Reverse gear helps, but it cannot be abused, otherwise the car will begin to dig in. But by balancing your own weight, you can perform miracles of high-speed driving. This is where leg freedom and arm length are needed. You can easily get out of a seemingly inevitable capsize “yachtsman style”, rolling over to the side opposite from the collapse and leveling the car. Wide footrests help this. However, due to inexperience, it doesn’t take long to get bogged down head over heels. Then accelerate - don’t accelerate, but until you trample the snowmobile around the perimeter, you are unlikely to get out of the snow captivity.

And when the difficulties of learning are over, then oh how wonderful it is to rush across the snow-covered plain! But the high-speed climb up a steep mountain is especially good. The car soars to the top with such ease that it takes your breath away. The descent is no less exciting, and if you take precautions when sliding down in a low gear, everything will go fine.

And in general, when driving such a powerful snowmobile, you cannot fall into euphoria and rush headlong. It is necessary to calculate the trajectory of movement in advance. And in any case, it is forbidden to resort to warming agents from the series of “peculiarities of the national…”. But after an active holiday (in the classic “Buldakov” manner), it’s not a sin to raise a pile for the excellent Skandic SUV WT 600 snowmobile - and for its owner.
