Rotax 4-Tec V-800 HO engine
One of the main innovations in the 2006-2007 snowmobile lineup. – this is, of course, a new 800 cc engine. This motor is already known from the Can-Am Outlander Max 800 ATV; now it has migrated to snowmobiles of the Lynx and Ski-Doo series. The Rotax 4-Tec 800 is located in the proprietary line between 600 and 1300 cc power units and replaces the previous one-liter model.
The two-cylinder four-stroke engine with a V-shaped cylinder arrangement is less noisy, consumes less fuel, and produces less harmful emissions into the atmosphere than traditional two-stroke engines of the previous generation. In addition, it does not consume oil - it only requires periodic replacement.
With a working volume of 799 cubic meters. cm engine develops 65 hp. With. (which is one of the best indicators in the class) and spins up to 7250 rpm. The electronic distributed fuel injection system (EFI - Electronic Fuel Injection) with two injectors ensures reliable engine starting in the most severe frosts.
Wild cats on ice
In the 2013 line, the SKI-DOO EXPEDITION SE 1200 4-TEC has the best specific power (2.4 kg of weight per 1 hp versus 2.7 kg for other snowmen.
Murmansk during our meeting was gloomy and rainy, but I philosophically did not attach any importance to this: everything in our life is impermanent, everything changes, and in the end we should only be happy about it.
Ahead of me was a most pleasant acquaintance with the new snowmobile equipment in the 2013 BRP model range. The official Rosan dealer, arranging a test drive of snowmobiles, promised a lot of interesting and noteworthy things from the “don’t miss it, otherwise you will regret it” category.
So, we're on the track. And here they are, beginner snowmobiles. Four swift, beautiful snowfields crouched to the ground on wide skis. What a long-awaited meeting - hello!
LYNX 69 YETI 600 ARMY E-TEC SWT
Snowmobiles of this model are in service in a number of Scandinavian countries, which speaks for itself. Their advantage is a 61 cm wide track with steel spikes located on it, which help the snowmobile move on ice. A comparison with a cat immediately arises, and then my English lessons come to mind: oh yes!.. Lynx is a lynx!
In general, this is a typical “battle cat”, with a powerful two-stroke engine (115 hp), with a spiked-clawed and wide gooseneck, PPS rear suspension and telescopic front suspension. Plus Blade skis have a special design, in which the racks are not attached to the centers of the skis, but are shifted to the longitudinal axis of the machine. At the same time, along their entire length, an edge at least an inch high is stamped on the underside of the ski. Skis can be easily swapped even in the field.
At the same time, the location of the edge also changes. When it is outside, it makes it easier to move in deep snow, when inside it is in mountainous terrain with steep slopes and endless ups and downs, where better handling is needed. These skis will perform especially well when traversing mountain slopes.
The design of the front suspension is made in such a way that it does not become clogged with snow and does not cling to the branches of bushes, trees and their roots. In a word, this snowmobile is convincing proof that in all respects it is an ideal winter vehicle not only for army special forces of the Finns or Swedes, but also for peaceful hunters, fishermen and simply those who like to make their own paths through forests, mountains and plains, somewhere ice, then crust, then freshly fallen “powder” or simply deep snow cover or the absence of it at all.
Having been on spring bear hunts a couple of times in the northeast of the country, where simple movement across the terrain is impossible without such equipment, I sadly remembered our suffering in the mountains on less, let’s say, prepared snowmobile equipment and allowed myself to dream about the time when my friends will have the opportunity to test these wonderful devices in action, storming the hills and passes of the mountain ranges of Kamchatka and the Magadan region.
It is well known that almost all cats do not like water, although they can swim. But our “cat” loves this business, although snowmobiles, by definition, are not intended for water. During the test, we moved along the frozen surface of the lake, dusted with snow. And suddenly, at low speed, my snowmobile began to fall through the ice - I fell into a ravine, which I simply did not notice in the heat of excitement that gripped me. The natural reaction was to press the gas trigger as hard as possible.
The engine roared, the snowmobile jerked forward, stood on its “heel”, so that the front skis froze in the air, and then went and swam forward, breaking and pushing through the spring ice in front of it, until it completely went on planing. Having advanced about a hundred meters and feeling solid ground beneath me - everything was happening not far from the shore - I looked back. Along the entire length of the trail there was a slush of wet snow, and under it, as the instructor later said, the depth was one and a half meters.
Already in the name of the model you can feel the spirit of the mountains. The safety cage seems to encourage the driver: give in, don’t be afraid, you won’t roll over. An ideal device for hunting wolves in the steppes of Russia, Kazakhstan and the high mountain plateaus of the Pamirs. |
The ability of the snowmobile to “swim” really surprised me - before that I had only seen this in commercials. Later, on other models, I repeated this experiment more than once, after which I returned to base, satisfied, but wet. I admit that swimming in winter and long driving afterwards will seem like a pleasant experience to few people, so I don’t advise anyone to do such tricks, especially since snowmobiles are not intended for “walking on water”, as well as on ice - tea, not jet skis.
After the Murmansk trip, I returned home with the conviction that this device combines traditional reliability, quality and the wayward character of a wild, but perfectly trainable (i.e., perfectly controllable) animal. The main conclusion is that the owner of this snowmobile will feel confident and calm on it, as if in the company of a faithful and reliable friend, ready to share with him all the adventures, sorrows and joys. In a word, I would only go into reconnaissance with this one.
SKI-DOO EXPEDITION SE 1200 4-TEC
This is a comfortable utilitarian with a good taste of a tourist snowmobile, combining convenience, maneuverability and functionality. In the SE configuration, the snowmobile is equipped with a rear air shock absorber, which allows you to adjust the position of the snowmobile taking into account its load, the weight of the driver and passenger. Air is pumped into the air suspension using a compressor. Front suspension travel is 21 cm, rear suspension travel is 34 cm; The front one is equipped with shock absorbers with double wishbones. 51 cm wide track with powerful lugs, four-stroke engine with a displacement of 1200 cm3 and a power of 130 hp. allow the driver, without hesitation, to storm both steep slopes and deep snowdrifts.
A modular seat, the passenger part of which is equipped with a backrest and heated handles, a steering wheel with four-level tilt adjustment, heated hands and throttle trigger, a high windshield, suspension, Pilot 6.9 skis - all these are pure advantages that make this model attractive to the consumer, and most importantly, it lives up to its name - Expedition.
The EXPEDITION SE 1200 4-TEC model has a Scandinavian twin brother with similar characteristics. Its name is LYNX ADVENTURE GT 1200 4-TEC. The only major difference is in the design of the rear suspension.
LYNX ALPINE SWT 1200 4-TEC
And here is the latest new product - the LYNX ALPINE SWT 1200 4-TEC snowmobile - a real workhorse, somewhat different from the “characters” described in the article. It has a powerful engine (130 hp), a wide track (61 cm), just like the LYNX YETI 69 ARMY, reinforced with studs. However, it, the only one of the presented models, has a rear suspension equipped with two shock absorbers with springs located almost horizontally.
This helps a lot when driving in wet snow; I think snowmobile owners who have encountered the problem of snow sticking to suspension elements will understand me.
The four-stroke engine means you don’t have to worry about whether its power reserve is enough to tow loaded sleds or overcome difficult places. When moving in a straight line, when you sharply press the gas trigger, completely different sensations arise. It seems that you are riding an unbroken stallion who is trying to get rid of you and makes a rapid leap forward, so that the steering wheel is torn out of your hands and the front skis easily come off the ground.
Like any all-terrain tractor, the ALPINE SWT 12000 captivates with its power, sense of permissiveness and cross-country ability and at the same time gives a feeling of comfort and safety.
SKI-DOO SCANDIC WT 550 F
Last year's SKI-DOO SCANDIC WT 550 F, equipped with a two-stroke engine and a 51 cm wide track, also took part in the Murmansk test for comparison. In terms of price, this is the most affordable and best-selling model in the BRP line. Despite the fact that two-stroke engines are noisier, less environmentally friendly and more expensive to operate - oil consumption alone (and gasoline too) is more than enough for several four-stroke engines - they are in steady demand.
All these shortcomings are compensated by the good “character” of the model: unpretentiousness and ease of operation, which often becomes decisive when choosing a snowmobile. Especially if we are not talking about the Central Federal District, but about Siberia or the Far East.
Yes, two-stroke engines are gradually losing ground, but this does not mean that they will no longer be used somewhere in the periphery by fishermen, hunters, fishermen, and tourists. There will always be lovers and connoisseurs of simplicity and reliability, especially where this is sometimes the only equipment that can be used to get from point A to point B during the long winter season.
And if, having entered into a legislative frenzy, the Duma suddenly does not become concerned with the problem of environmental pollution in the vast expanses of the country and does not pass a law banning the use of two-stroke engines, then we are guaranteed a long and happy life for them.

Off-Road Tourer Ski-Doo Expedition TUV V-800
Snowmobiles of the Expedition family occupy an intermediate position in the brand line between utilitarian “working” and touring models and successfully combine the best features of both classes. Providing, in particular, due to the long track, the cross-country ability of “workhorses”, they, at the same time, are comfortable and equipped at the level of the best “tourists”.
The Expedition TUV V-800 is built on the proven YETI chassis, which features single wishbone and curved trailing arm suspension at the front and SUV-style suspension at the rear. The front shock absorbers are hydraulic, the rear shock absorbers are gas-filled. This chassis provides the snowmobile with good stability and controllability both off-road and on specially prepared trails.
When you need to tow heavy loads or tackle long climbs with a passenger in the back seat, the 800cc Rotax's already excellent towing performance can be improved by downshifting the transmission. The equipment of the new Expedition will provide riders with comfort even on the longest journey: there is a modular seat that allows you to easily change the layout of the snowmobile from two to single, and a multifunctional instrument panel, and heated grips.
For tourism and more
This is certainly convenient for the mass buyer: when choosing a snowmobile, he can only be guided by his own requirements for engine power, the variety of additional equipment, as well as his own financial capabilities.
At the same time, any model will be as comfortable as possible for both the driver and the passenger. Most “tourists” (with the exception, perhaps, of very budget models) are already equipped as standard with an electric starter and reverse, an electronic instrument panel, as well as a modular seat, rear-view mirrors, a high windshield and even electrically heated steering wheel grips.
A distinctive design feature of tourist snowmobiles is their wide ski base, which makes them stable both when moving in a straight line and when turning.
Ski-Doo Legend Touring V-800
The name of this model speaks for itself: it is truly a “legendary” model, which is maximally suitable for long-distance travel. Engineers at Bombardier Recreational Products call it "the perfect choice for safari."
The snowmobile is built on the RF aluminum platform, the prototype of which, in turn, was the REV sports chassis. It was designed so that the engine was located in the base, behind the front suspension. This design made it possible to reduce the load on the skis, place a fairly large 800 cc engine as compactly as possible and, ultimately, improved the handling of the snowmobile.
This arrangement was once tested on the REV platform of sports snowmobiles and, having confirmed its effectiveness in competitions, began to be used on the “mass” RF chassis.
For the 2006/2007 season, Legend Touring received a new Rotax 4-Tec V-800 engine, already known from the Can-Am Outlander Max 800 ATV and now migrated to Lynx and Ski-Doo series snowmobiles. With a working volume of 799 cubic meters. cm engine develops 65 hp. With. and spins up to 7250 rpm. The electronic distributed fuel injection system (EFI - Electronic Fuel Injection) with two injectors ensures reliable engine starting in the most severe frosts. It is also important that the new engine has increased the traction characteristics of the snowmobile and significantly increased the cruising range per fill-up.
Ski-Doo GTX 600 SDI Limited
The word “Limited” in the name of this snowmobile directly indicates a rich package. Equipped with GTX 600 Ltd. includes almost all the equipment that improves rider comfort that exists today in the snowmobile industry: from an electric starter and electric reverse to heated steering grips, from a modular seat to removable hard luggage bags.
But the main thing, perhaps, is not even this, but the fact that the GTX 600 SDI Ltd. - this is not even a two-, but a three-seater (!) model, and when going on a trip with the whole family, you don’t have to think about what the child will ride on (there are, of course, special children’s snowmobiles, but kids are unlikely to be able to maintain the pace on this parental movements). At the same time, the modular seat of the snowmobile can be easily transformed into either a double or single seat. In a three-seater configuration, it can even support three adults: the rear shock absorbers automatically adjust the suspension height depending on the load and road conditions.
Well, there will be no lack of dynamics in any case: the snowmobile is equipped with a 600 cc engine with fuel injection producing 116 hp. With. – perhaps the best in the line of BRP two-stroke engines. At least in terms of emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere and fuel consumption, this engine is only slightly inferior to the more economical and environmentally friendly four-stroke engines.
Ski-Doo GTX 550F
This snowmobile is a budget “entry-level” model, which is not inferior in functionality to more expensive representatives of this class. Therefore, the GTX 550 F is suitable not only for beginners, but also for those buyers who, for one reason or another, need a second snowmobile; It is also in good demand among rental companies.
The suspension of the device is the same as that of older models: lever, on double A-shaped arms, with anti-roll bar at the front and SC-136 with HPG shock absorber at the rear. The design is based on the REV aluminum platform.
The Rotax 550F motor (57 hp, capable of spinning up to 7000 rpm) allows the snowmobile to reach speeds of up to 120 km/h. Moreover, due to the air cooling system, this engine is relatively light, unpretentious and not prone to overheating in light snow.
In general, this particular model can be recommended to novice “riders”, as well as to those who are not yet ready to invest significant funds in the purchase of a snowmobile: the device is quite economical, and it will be very difficult for an inexperienced user to disable it...
"Tourist" Ski-Doo Legend Touring V-800
Actually, the main purpose of this snowmobile is accurately described in the name: it is a famous model, maximally adapted for long-distance travel. Engineers at Bombardier Recreational Products call it "the perfect choice for safari."
The snowmobile is built on the RF aluminum platform, the prototype of which, in turn, was the “sports” REV chassis. Its main feature is the location of the engine in the base, behind the front suspension. This design made it possible to reduce the load on the skis, place a fairly large 800 cc engine as compactly as possible and, ultimately, improve the handling of the snowmobile. This arrangement was once tested on the REV platform of sports snowmobiles and, having confirmed its effectiveness, began to be used on the “mass” RF chassis.
The front suspension here is based on A-arms with swinging bars (for better maneuverability and control over the car). At the rear there is SC-136 type suspension with HPG shock absorber.
Well, the Rotax V-800 engine suited this model perfectly, increasing traction characteristics and significantly improving the range on one fill-up.

"Hard worker" Lynx Yeti Pro V-800
In conditions where power and traction are crucial, when overcoming virgin snow is not entertainment or relaxation, but a severe necessity, there are few equals to this well-deserved “hard worker” from the Yeti family.
Yeti Pro is equipped with a 60 cm wide track. Such wide-track models, according to BRP experts, are not produced by any of its competitors. Such a wide track has a length of 396 cm, which, in combination with wide skis, provides the snowmobile with unprecedented maneuverability.
The design of the body and suspension of the snowmobile is also subject to the solution of the same problem (ensuring cross-country ability). The bottom of the Yeti Pro has the shape of a boat, and there are no protruding parts in the front suspension (it is made on the basis of gas-filled shock absorber struts), which makes it easy to cut through snowdrifts of any depth and not be afraid of obstacles hidden under the snow cover. Well, the Yeti Pro telescopic suspension has long been recognized by experts as “indestructible”.
In the basic configuration, the snowmobile is a two-seater model, but by removing the rear seat, it can be made into a single-seater with a huge trunk in the back.
