"Arctic 1500"

- serial Russian utilitarian snowmobile-tractor. Produced since 2015 in the city of Miass, together with JSC Master[1].

Initially, in 2011, it launched the production of Arctic 1500 snowmobiles in China, but in 2021 it moved to Miass[2]. The company motivated this decision by the fall in the dollar exchange rate. By 2021, the company plans to produce up to 1 thousand snowmobiles, with plans to localize up to 70% of production in Russia. The main customers of snowmobiles are the Russian Ministry of Defense and ski resorts. The project is included in the list of the Investment Development Agency (IDA) of the Chelyabinsk region.

LLC "Snow Technologies" together with JSC "Master" rent production space in Miass, where the assembly production and welding area are located. Investments in the Master JSC project as of 2021 amounted to about $300 thousand, the total investment in the project exceeded $1 million[3].

  1. I recently purchased a new one and immediately decided to test it. After a while the engine recalled itself. I remember well the times when my “eight” got up every week because of the same penny detail, and always at the most inopportune moment. And during this test, a snowmobile with a new engine started without a spark. But as it turned out, the problem was in the switch. When I returned home I fixed everything. After that, I was very pleased with the car, both in terms of cross-country ability and traction, and in terms of comfort. So, I am completely satisfied with the purchase.
  2. This snowball is not at all suitable for driving through forests due to poor maneuverability, however, it is an ideal option for working on large farms, where, by the way, I use it. The machine can easily cope with transporting heavy sleds and towing various equipment. You can also use it to iron roads. I especially liked its maintainability and the fact that spare parts are available both at cost and by searching. So far I have not identified any serious shortcomings.

[edit] Features of the snowmobile

This snowmobile, unlike other models, uses a power plant from a car, namely a four-stroke, four-cylinder engine of the VAZ 21083 brand. This engine has a high, for a snowmobile, maximum torque of 100 newtons per meter, which allows the snowmobile to be used as a tractor for towing fairly heavy loads weighing up to one ton, and the start of movement occurs at fairly low engine speeds, which allows you to move off smoothly without slipping and tearing off the snow cover.

High maneuverability of the snowmobile and confident planing on virgin soil are ensured by two tracks of a specific design, which creates a low specific pressure on the snow surface and minimizes the possibility of the snowmobile falling under the snow.

The snowmobile is equipped with four-range heating of the throttle trigger and steering handles, as well as deflectors that direct hot air to the driver[4].

  • Nikolay, Yaroslavl. A decent device for certain needs, namely for transporting goods. You should not consider this model as a snowmobile for entertainment, because it is more of a working special vehicle, not suitable for active maneuvers. I found the Arctic 1500 useful for transporting goods, hunting and fishing. Sometimes I work as a tugboat, pulling out stuck SUVs - we have plenty of tourists around here. The powerful 80-horsepower unit surprised us with its great traction and high revs. It’s strange, but I’ve never noticed such traction in my VAZ-21083 car, which couldn’t even drive uphill normally on a slippery road. It is clear that the Arctic 1500 snowmobile has a completely different chassis - tracked and ski, and therefore it is much easier for it to overcome heavy obstacles, including icy surfaces and deep snow. But the speed will be close to a snail’s pace, there’s nothing you can do about it. Overall, I liked the car, it brings me income, well, at least some part-time work besides my main job.
  • Sergey, Novosibirsk. It’s a good car, I just recently purchased it – at the beginning of January 2021. I decided to give myself a gift. I started running it in, everything seemed to be fine. Later the engine, which at first worked quietly, reminded itself of itself. Unfortunately, the engine was not modified at all, and was simply moved from the V8. I had such a car. Its engine was annoying with minor problems, but overall it worked. The parts were cheap, but they often failed, and at the most inopportune moment. Therefore, we had to carry spare parts with us. I feel like there will be about the same headache with this snowmobile, because the designers haven’t really finalized anything, and the factory problems remain. I can live with this, I’ve somehow gotten used to it. By the way, I still have the “eight”, and it works. Fortunately, this supposedly serious drawback with the engine is compensated by an undeniable advantage - high load capacity. Actually, that’s why I bought this snowmobile. I knew in advance that there would be problems with the engine. Load capacity is important to me, and here the Arctic 1500 also pleased me - it is capable of towing a load weighing up to 3000 kg, but that says something... You can pull and transport heavy trailers, for example cars, SUVs. Quite recently, an incident occurred that I feared most (fortunately, everything worked out): during another long trip, the engine suddenly stopped without a spark. I thought the problem was in the motor. But it turned out that the battery was dead. Replaced it with another one, everything worked. I'm happy with the car, good luck to everyone.
  • Anton, Krasnoyarsk. The Arctic 1500 is a controversial snowmobile that has many shortcomings, although there are also significant advantages. But for me this is not enough. I have some conflicting impressions about this car. I don’t recommend it to anyone, except perhaps for the sake of high load capacity. A snowmobile is absolutely unsuitable for active travel, for fast and high-speed maneuvers, etc. This device does not bring any pleasure, unfortunately. The machine is capable of pulling a three-ton colossus out of a ditch - and this is perhaps the only achievement of the Arctic 1500 snowmobile. It is clumsy and is not capable of driving in difficult to reach areas, in the presence of serious obstacles - stones and trees, which are almost impossible to go around due to the large turning radius. And the cross-country ability did not work out - due to the heavy weight, the snowmobile quickly sits on its belly in some deep snowdrift, and in the end you will have to call a tow truck. Fortunately, I haven’t encountered such troubles yet, God forbid. But the car is easy to repair, and there are always spare parts available for it - they are available aftermarket or in stores. The reliability of the car is mediocre; I always take the necessary parts with me just in case.

The snowmobile body is load-bearing, welded, metal. The car is equipped with a double seat, a removable hood and a hitch.

The engine of the Arctic 1500 snowmobile is eight-valve, four-cylinder, with vertically arranged cylinders. Volume - 1.499 liters. The maximum torque is 100 newtons per meter. Rated output power at 5600 crankshaft revolutions is 79 horsepower (58.1 kW).

The engine cooling system is combined, has two types of radiators - air with fans and heat exchangers in the caterpillar tunnel. This scheme allows you to avoid engine overheating when working on compacted snow.

[edit] Suspension

The snowmobile uses two skis and two Russian-made tracks (similar to the track of the Taiga snowmobile) with a width of 500 mm, which together gives a wide 1.1 m trail after the snowmobile passes. On the other hand, having a large supporting surface of the tracks, the snowmobile has one of the lowest snow pressure indicators - 26 g. per sq. cm, which allows you to move through very deep snow. The same large support surface of the tracks allows you to tow heavy trailers without tearing off snow and then digging into it.

The front ski suspension is telescopic and has no exposed parts, unlike a link suspension which is more susceptible to damage. The suspension travel is 170 mm, which ensures a smooth ride and good handling. The skis are made of frost-resistant monolithic plastic, have a width of 225 mm and do not require the installation of additional extensions.

The steering of the snowmobile has an electric booster, which greatly facilitates the control of the snowmobile and reduces physical stress on the driver. The throttle grips and trigger have four-range heating. The presence of deflectors for the release of hot air directed towards the driver also makes work more comfortable.

Separately, let us pay attention to the good off-road capabilities of the Arctic 1500 snowmobile. The machine is suitable for driving on a well-worn road or deep snowdrifts. Especially for such conditions, the device is equipped with two tracks, thanks to which it was possible to increase stability and confident passage of obstacles when planing on virgin soil. This is facilitated by the low specific pressure, as well as the low center of gravity. These features minimized the risk of the snowmobile falling under the snow. But, as practice has shown, low specific pressure has a significant drawback, which can manifest itself when climbing a slope. In this case, the caterpillar track is prone to loss of adhesion properties with slippery surfaces, which is quite understandable from the point of view of physics, and taking into account the solid dimensions and heavy weight of the snowmobile. And if a slip occurs (coupling properties are lost), in this case the car will roll down the slope. In this regard, the Arctic 1500 snowmobile requires getting used to, and with good preparation, you can highly appreciate the off-road features of this machine, and, if necessary, get out without climbing a slope without any problems.

To ensure a comfortable ride, the Arctic 1500 snowmobile was equipped with a multifunctional throttle trigger. Its peculiarity is the presence of four heating modes. In the latest mode, the gas trigger is heated in an enhanced mode, which can be used in permafrost conditions - for example, in the northern regions of Russia, at temperatures of minus 20 degrees and below. In fact, in the latter mode, this function can serve as a kind of stove, which will become an alternative to a car stove.

The front part of the Arctic 1500 snowmobile is equipped with powerful additional block headlights, which provide additional illumination at night. In addition, this improves visibility and visibility in extreme weather conditions - for example, during heavy precipitation, snowstorms or blizzards. Despite the halogen headlights, they shine quite well. As for the rear lighting, there is an LED headlight that shines brighter and farther than halogen lights. An LED headlight can be used in cases where the driver is lost in the wilderness. Thanks to such a headlight, the snowmobile will be easily visible.

The Arctic 1500 snowmobile is designed to perform complex operations in harsh climatic conditions that require high traction forces from the engine. The power characteristics of the Arctic 1500 snowmobile are at a high level, which is not surprising. After all, they need snowmobiles for maximum load capacity. Thus, the machine can be equipped with a winch, whose maximum force reaches 3000 kg. The winch can be installed in the front or rear - at the discretion of the driver. It also depends on which side the cargo container is pulled from. Let us note the fact that the Arctic 1500 snowmobile is capable of easily pulling an SUV weighing up to three tons out of a ditch. In addition to unprecedented carrying capacity, the developers managed to increase the internal luggage compartment. It has become more spacious, and you can place the necessary things, spare parts and accessories in it. In addition, another trunk can be arranged instead of the rear passenger seat by first removing it. So, after removing the seat, you need to install a special mounting platform on which large cargo containers are placed.

The snowmobile has a standard load-bearing body, the manufacture of which uses a durable metal alloy. Of course, this design is better able to withstand frost, shock and various damages than the cheaper plastic used in more compact and budget models. The body is reinforced by spot welding. The basic equipment includes a two-seater seat, a removable hood and a hitch. By the way, the last option is provided in two versions, which are a ball or a king pin.

The driver's seat is very well organized. Let's pay attention to the verified ergonomics of the devices, looking at which you can see the speed readings, current and daily mileage, engine speed, as well as the temperature and oil pressure of the internal combustion engine. For the driver and passenger, backrests with body fixation are provided. High-quality finishing materials have to some extent improved the comfort and overall perception of the controls, which are located in the right places, and you don’t have to reach for them.
