In Soviet times, IZH "Jupiter-6" was considered one of the highest quality models of two-wheeled vehicles. All previous options had their drawbacks. The sixth “Jupiter” combined many of the good qualities of previous motorcycles and gained something new, so it can easily be called the best product of the Izhevsk plant.
But for our time, IZH "Jupiter-6" can be called a rarity. After all, more than 30 years have passed since its release. It is not often seen on the roads, and it is quite difficult to find a new bike or one with low mileage.
Brief characteristics of IZH "Jupiter-6"
The Six, like other models in this series, is classified as a motorcycle of the so-called middle class. This means that it is mainly intended for travel on paved roads. It’s difficult to call the IZH “Jupiter-6” an all-terrain vehicle. Although it is worth noting its good cross-country ability in mud. This is due to its low mass.
It's also worth noting that there were two factory variations of this bike. The first is the usual two-wheeled one, the second is with a stroller. This additional unit weighs almost 100 kilograms. This means that with it many technical characteristics, such as speed, fuel consumption, and so on, deteriorated. Maybe that's why the second modification is less common.
Design
As already mentioned, the first IZH “Jupiter-5” did not differ in design from the IZH “Jupiter-4” model. But with the advent of the new IZh “Planet-5”, the designers decided to borrow some external elements from this motorcycle.
So, the shape of the dashboard has changed. Previously, it was square with a speedometer, warning lamps and an ignition switch located on it. The new instrument panel consisted of two combined wells. The speedometer was installed in the right one, the left one was used for warning lamps. The ignition switch was installed between the dashboard and the steering wheel.
The shape of the fuel tank has changed somewhat, and it again acquired rubber pads for the knees; the first versions of the IZH Jupiter-5 did not have them. Along with the tank, the shape of the side glove compartment lids also changed.
The most significant thing in the design of the IZH “Jupiter-5” was the appearance of a seat with a small extension that turns into a brake light. People call this seat “Bench”.
Subsequently, the designers redesigned the engine itself. Now IZH Jupiter-5 motorcycles are already equipped with water-cooled units, although its power has not changed.
Let's get to know the 1200 cc bandit from Japan in more detail: Suzuki Bandit 1200 is the hero of our article.

Appearance
IZH "Jupiter-6" has a classic design. Black extended saddle, red body. Sometimes the colors ranged from yellow to blue. It is worth highlighting the abundance of chrome parts. The six boasts beautiful, shiny exhaust pipes. Sometimes an additional protective frame was installed on the model, which was also covered with chrome. In general, the appearance of the bike is acceptable: strict, no frills, but what else can be said about the design, completely copied from the Czech Java.
Photos
The IZH Jupiter 5 motorcycle, as stated above, has been in production since 1985 and is now quite rare on our roads. It's quite difficult to find a motorcycle in good condition. But just recently, similar models of motorcycles were found almost everywhere. Let's see what it looked like.
Factory innovations
IZH "Jupiter-6" boasts of its technical improvements. The new liquid cooling worked very well on it. When their airborne counterparts stall in forty-degree heat, this motorcycle rides calmly and doesn’t have any problems. Also, do not forget about the improved contactless ignition system with electric starter. Now it doesn't break down as often. The kick starter, of course, is also present, but it is more like a backup option than an alternative.
Another plus is the change in the exhaust system mounting. In the sixth Jupiter it is flanged, which eliminated the problem of pipe play at high speeds. A new emergency start function has been added, which is very helpful when the battery is low.
IZH "Jupiter-6" - technical characteristics
The main part of every motorcycle is its power unit. Jupiter is fine with this. The IZH Jupiter-6 engine operates in two-stroke mode. The total volume of its two cylinders is 347 cubic centimeters. The lubrication system, unfortunately, is not separated. This means that after each refueling, in addition to fuel, you need to add oil to the gas tank. The maximum engine power is 25 horsepower and torque is 35 N*m.
Fuel consumption, namely A-92, per hundred kilometers at a speed of 60 km/h is four liters. But this is on the highway. In city mode at the same speed it increases to seven liters. The maximum speed of this bike is 125 km/h. But in reality this is not the limit. There are many ways to increase this threshold. The simplest of them is to replace the sprockets. Place a part with a large number of teeth on the main one, and one with fewer teeth on the driven one.
IZH "Jupiter-6" is equipped with old drum brakes. But they cope with their task well. If desired, you can also install disc brakes on this motorcycle. "Jupiter" can be considered a compact bike. Some craftsmen even manage to send it (disassembled) by mail. It reaches a height of 120 cm, and a length of only 220.
The engine is practical and very reliable
The engine turned out to be very reliable and practical. The simplicity of the system and unpretentiousness made it easier not only to repair, but also to operate the motor. Having 175 cc per cylinder, it not only pulled a side trailer loaded to nowhere, but also developed a crazy speed of 120 km/h at that time. Compared to heavy motorcycles, it even gained 10 kilometers in speed. It also performs well at low temperatures.
Eternal competition
IZH "Jupiter-6" constantly competed with its fellow plant IZH Planet-6. Disputes about which of them is better continue to this day, although neither one nor the other is released anymore. Indeed, this question is quite complex, because each has characteristic pros and cons. For example, Jupiter has always been famous for its high performance chassis. He drives smoothly and picks up speed slowly. In the 100-meter dash it will easily overtake the Planet and any other domestic bike.
The planet leaves on its own reliability. In terms of durability, it has no equal. It also has a relatively simple motor and gearbox design. This makes repairs much easier in case of breakdowns. We must not forget about the disadvantages. IL "Jupiter-6", like its predecessors, has many problems with electronics. Therefore, it is worth keeping an eye on this block. IL Planet-6 has poor depreciation. Often at high speeds you can feel a vibration in the seat, which degrades the ride experience.
No offense to the owners of "Planets", but "Jupiter" looks better against the general background. After all, one of the main criteria of any vehicle is ride quality. And in “Jupiter” it is better.
And again, good evening everyone! Not long ago I wrote about Izh-Planet motorcycles and the inspiration still remains. I hasten to please you with yet another information about a rather interesting motorcycle. Planet - 6. Finally, I managed to find enough interesting things about it to write a short story. 1994 Development of a new IZH-P6 engine has begun. The main designers of this engine were V. Talamanov and V. Batuev. It was supposed to produce an engine for a new model. What new did they want to introduce into this engine? But look for yourself. The engine remained 1-cylinder and 2-stroke. The working volume is 340 cm3, but the piston stroke and cylinder diameter were borrowed from the IZH-Planet Sport motorcycle. It was also planned to introduce a 5-speed gearbox. In general, this engine was a further modernization of its predecessor IZH P5-01. It also retained non-contact ignition and a separate lubrication system. This is how the power unit turned out. Looks good, doesn't it? And here is his drawing in one of the repair books. Main technical characteristics: Engine type: 2-stroke, 1-cylinder. Working volume: 340 cm3. Cylinder diameter: 76 mm. Piston stroke: 75 mm. Compression ratio: 8.7-9.2. Maximum power: 24.5 hp Crankshaft speed at maximum power: 4850 rpm. Maximum torque: 33 N.m. Crankshaft speed at maximum torque: 4600 rpm. Motor transmission: 2-row bushing chain, reinforced. Motor transmission ratio: 2.17. Clutch: friction multi-plate in an oil bath. Number of friction pairs: 7 with reinforced drive disc splines. Clutch engagement mechanism: cam type. Gearbox: gear, 3-shaft, 2-cam. Ignition system: contactless electronic with automatic control of the ignition timing, independent of the battery, 12V. Generator power: 105 W. Lubrication system: separate. Cooling: liquid with automatic fan switching on. Intake system: K-65I carburetor.
It turns out interesting! It seems that there is a new model of IZH, but MOTO magazine is silent, although they have published articles about other new products more than once. But a small note flashed about P6, like in an obituary. It’s a bit sparse, of course, they wrote about him...
Interesting fact! The motorcycle in the article was later purchased and restored (if I read it correctly on the Internet). Here it is before purchase. And here after restoration.
Well, this is how the first model of the IZH-P6 motorcycle turned out. Quite modest without the Orion fork and casting, but still quite nice. Minimalism is also a good thing from time to time.
The motorcycle, of course, did not go into mass production, but if rumors are to be believed, approximately 28 of these engines were produced. And where half of them are, God himself probably doesn’t know.
But there are photographs from the famous basement of IzhMash, where a lot of interesting things stood for the time being. Here are our Planets - 6 stood there. And individual engines were caught too.
This is such an interesting motorcycle. I won’t finish here, but will tell you more about their modifications. You may ask: did such a low-volume model have any modifications?! I will answer: of course! And it's quite interesting! I'll start from the beginning.
In the book I found information about the modernized IZH P6-01 engine. The changes in this engine affected only the cylinder head and the cylinder itself. They are finned, just like a regular air vent.
Next, the IZH P6-02 engine was created. It was intended for a mini tractor and was equipped with an electric start and a remote generator.
I also found Planet 6 in a different cladding. The engine has not undergone any changes.
And finally, the latest modification of this engine and simply the maximum set of everything that could be done with the Izh-Planet crankcase.
Here he is! Engine IZH P7. What did this engine include: 1. Separate lubrication system. 2.Liquid cooling. 3.Contactless ignition system. 4.Five-speed gearbox. 5. Presence of an electric starter. 6. Balancing mechanism to reduce vibration levels. Years of development: 1997-1999. Designers: R. Gizzatullin, M. Shalagin, V. Batuev. Main technical characteristics:
Working volume: 340 cm3. Cylinder diameter: 76 mm. Piston stroke: 75 mm. Compression ratio: 8.7-9.2. Maximum power: 24.5 hp Crankshaft speed at maximum power: 4850 rpm. Motor transmission: 2-row bushing chain, reinforced. Motor transmission ratio: 2.17. Clutch: friction multi-plate in an oil bath. Number of friction pairs: 7 with reinforced drive disc splines. Clutch engagement mechanism: cam type. Gearbox: five-speed. Ignition system: contactless electronic with automatic control of the ignition timing, independent of the battery, 12V. Generator power: 105 W. Lubrication system: separate. Cooling: liquid with automatic fan switching on.
It was simply impossible to cram more into this engine. Here are some interesting photos of the insides of the crankcase. Balancer shaft gear The balancer shaft itself and its place in the crankcase Recess for the electric starter Crankcase with cylinder Crankcase with crankshaft and balancer
And I bought the motor with the cladding in this condition. As you can see, the cladding is similar to the one that was installed on the IZh Sprint. At first glance you wouldn’t understand that this is a Planet)))
The owner did a great job restoring this bike. Now it looks like this. Now this motorcycle is completely restored and looks different, sorry there are no photos.
This is how Planet 6 turned out. There are no words!!!
And here are some more famous examples. P6 from Izhevsk. The owners are very nice guys! P6 from Saransk. P6 from St. Petersburg.
This was such an interesting model! In this engine, the capabilities of the long-suffering crankcase were fully used))) This is the maximum that has been achieved. Liquid cooling is a huge plus for the planet if used in the city. Having traveled on a regular air plane in the city in the summer, you are very afraid of traffic jams, otherwise you cannot avoid getting stuck... you just dream about liquid cooling...
This is where the next story ends. I think you found it interesting. Thank you for attention.
