Izh Bike Farmer: tricycle adult bike

Few people know, but you can make a tricycle with your own hands from Izh in an ordinary garage with a fairly small budget. A small trike will have a comfortable fit, dynamics, good handling, and the lightness of the frame will allow you to accelerate at a fairly high speed.

The model itself can be implemented in the style of a rigid bike , with leather trim, chrome-plated steel inserts, or have a more sporty look, with streamlined shapes and lines of the body. Drawings of a tricycle from Izh can have emphasis on long trips, or on active driving on difficult rough terrain, copying models of famous brands, adjusted for size. Much depends on your budget and the time you are willing to invest in your hobby.

Some motorcyclists make a tricycle from Izh with their own hands in order to have a reliable and convenient household assistant. The reinforced frame and powerful rear axle will allow you to transport decent loads, and the reliable IZh engine is easy to maintain.

This story began a long time ago, I don’t remember exactly when, then, when I saw my father’s motorcycle at the hunting base, I wanted a motorcycle for myself, but then I was still small and could hardly pull it away from the wall of the garage, but time passed and as I grew up I remembered that a motorcycle that I saw as a child. And so it turned out that that winter I came to this base again, going into the garage I saw a motorcycle that had been standing against the wall all this time, it was an old Planet 5. My father allowed me to take this “junk,” as he put it. And my father was right, the motorcycle was completely rotten, there was no carburetor, no battery, the wheels were stripped, the seat was torn; it was completely disassembled, but I still decided to pick it up. It took me a long time to assemble it, most likely due to the fact that my knowledge of the technology was only theoretical, but still, after two weeks, the time came to start the power unit. And so the theory tells me: “All you have to do is pull the kick starter, and the roar of the engine will be heard,” but theory and practice rarely intersect, and this case was no exception, after fiddling with it for a couple more hours, it started up, most of all I at that moment I was afraid to hear a ringing or knocking. And my fears came true. The engine rang and knocked. And I was faced with a choice to continue restoration or throw this trash in a landfill. I chose the first option.

An autopsy showed that the piston had 2 of 3 rings with gaps in the locks of 4-5mm, a broken pin, play in the connecting rod, scratches on the liner, play in the crankshaft bearings. Major repairs were required, or better yet, major repairs. A crankshaft, cylinder, piston, rings, bearings, seals were purchased. With the help of my stepfather, all this was put into place in two evenings. And now it’s time to start it again, now I won’t be so naive, but there was no spark, the battery was dead. There was no time to exercise because we had to get ready for Rostov-on-Don. When I returned, the first thing I did was go to the motorcycle and on the third try it finally started. Now there was a break-in, regretting that the engine did not go more than 60 km/h. This is how I spent the rest of the Karelian summer.

In the fall, I came across an article by comrade Zloy. True, before that there were thoughts about reworking the enduro of my planet, but the brainchild of the Evil One inspired me to decide on this rework.

Already in late autumn I started working on my endurik. I agreed with the welder who welded the frame for me, found a fork from a CZ-516 motocross bike, and slowly started working on the motorcycle in my free time. I decided to make: BSZ, since the cams got pretty bad for me over the summer, make a voltage stabilizer voltage regulator like the VAZ one, install a digital tachometer, and a driving computer.

By the beginning of the season, I had not made a new seat and a new exhaust system, so as not to be left without a motorcycle for a month, I decided to install standard ones.

I decided to cut off the rear sprocket housing for a number of reasons. Here's what came out of it:

By August, I was finally fed up with the standard muffler that caught rocks. And I decided to make a new exhaust system suitable for enduro needs.

I decided that the second option was more acceptable, since the cigar was difficult to position in the frame. I started with a mock-up of the future resonator. Having fitted it to the frame, it becomes clear that it will interfere with the tank.

Now you can start mocking the tank. But often cutting out a tank is not a problem, the problem is finding a welder who will work on the tank, but fortunately I know a welder who welds tanks. I cut the tank by pushing sand into it. But for welding, sand is no longer an option; you need to evaporate the tank. Due to the impossibility of evaporating the tank by inserting a hose from a car muffler into it, we had to look for alternative options. And the idea immediately came to mind to pass running hot water through the tank, which would heat the tank and hot steam. When the hour arrived, there was no smell of gasoline in the tank, but just in case, I washed it with hot water and fairy. The welder welded the tank without any problems. Just in case, I coated the seam on the tank with epoxy resin, as I had already done with the resonator and exhaust pipe.

There were no special problems with it for two years, with the exception of the constantly clogged fuel filter, and the front fender that just as often broke. PS This bike will forever have a place in my heart and in my garage.

E-bike load capacity

Three wheels provide stability on rural and urban roads. There are two stainless steel baskets available. The front dimensions are 34x25x23 cm, and the rear dimensions are 56x38x30 cm. It is convenient to transport loads, even a child, without much hassle. The total load capacity of the tricycle is up to 130 kg. It’s easy to transport construction materials, food and other household oversized cargo.

Fork

The length of the fork is determined by your project. If you want to make a long front fork, this trike is suitable for flat roads and long rides. A more aggressive driving style will require a shorter length. A tricycle from Izh, photos of various mods of which can be found on amateur forums, may even have a trunk located above the front wheel. Of course, in terms of cross-country ability, trikes are not competitors to ATVs, but for trips to the country, garden or fishing, the work invested will more than pay off.

Cross-country motorcycle from IZH Planet-5

The Soviet motorcycle IZH Planeta-5 lends itself very well to tuning. Often in this model of bike, which is produced at the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant of Java, its stroke is slightly increased. then, of course, you need to change the wings.

No fundamental improvements are required in the engine of the fifth “Planet”. In order to increase the life of the crankshaft, it is necessary to replace the original bearings with secondary shaft bearings from Java.

It is also recommended to make the cylinder volume larger. To do this, you need to cut off its upper part and bore the sleeve to 76 mm. The piston from the Planet sports model is ideal for these sleeve sizes.

Practice shows that after implementing the above improvements, the new Planet-5s were capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h. During testing of the engine, it produced 42 hp. s., and the rotation speed was 5950 rpm. It is worth considering the fact that with any changes to the engine, its resources are reduced. Therefore, such changes are not recommended for motorcycles that are intended exclusively for everyday riding.

In addition, when upgrading the engine, traditional rubber on the rear wheel, clutch and chain may not last long. Therefore, it is also advisable to modernize them.

A traditional standard clutch can only operate reliably under normal conditions. However, if the load is increased during engine upgrades, and the driving is aggressive (as in cross-country racing), then the load on the discs will be significantly increased, as a result of which they may become unsuitable for use. Most experts advise replacing one disk with a thicker metal one, which will allow the springs to be compressed strongly, and the disks will not slip, and the clutch will become a little harder to squeeze.

To assemble a 250 W tricycle, open-end wrenches 17 and 23 are required.

Be sure to click the rear drum brake; it will work correctly only after assembling the rear axle.

The batteries are held on longitudinal guides. Leave the foam, it will additionally dampen vibration.

Frame

It will be easier to make an Izh tricycle with your own hands if you have experience in welding and understand the design of motorcycles or cars. The frame will have to be completely manufactured from scratch, have a pre-designed shape and structure. Usually the calculation is made in such a way as to exclude breakdowns and places with vulnerable structures, so that the trike can travel hundreds of kilometers without maintenance.

Strengthening is achieved by welding corners and additional pipes so that the fork does not vibrate. The basis of the transmission can be taken from a walk-behind tractor or combine harvesters. If you want to get a traction type Izh Planet tricycle, it is better to use sprockets in a ratio of 2:1, i.e. 50 and 25 teeth respectively.

The controller is located under the battery compartment, so sealing is a big question. It is better to immediately seal the bottom of the battery compartment.

Life hack: if the tricycle has a lead battery, immediately drill a hole in the lower side of the compartment to drain the leaked acid.

We recommend replacing the original 1.75″ tires with 24″ and 2.6″ wide front tires, but the rear ones are better 3″ wide. Driving comfort over bumps and our roads is significantly improved.

Engine

Izh tricycle is made with my own hands based on the “Planet 3” model. In this case, the original crankshaft, generator, and 6-volt ignition coil are used. A feature of the type of body design is the transfer of the power unit to the rear, which shifts the balance when driving. Moreover, such a scheme determines high characteristics of maneuverability, controllability, and, consequently, speed.

When installing the engine and creating the frame, it is worth providing convenient access to places that require frequent maintenance. Many craftsmen make quick-release sections of the frame in order to be able to further customize their three-wheeled iron horse.
