Criteria for choosing your first motorcycle based on height, fit and other parameters

- height: sit on the bike, ensuring that you can stand firmly on your feet when standing;
- weight: try rolling the bike for a few meters using your legs. Also do this procedure while standing to the side. If both options are given with great difficulty, then the choice of motorcycle should be opted for a lighter model;
- landing: sit in the saddle of the “iron” horse for at least 5 minutes, taking the working position of your arms and legs. If during this time you become uncomfortable, you will have to consider another option;
- engine capacity: the maximum recommended cubic capacity for beginners is 650 cm3. If you feel like a more experienced driver, then you can consider more powerful models.
What should a touring motorcycle be like?
If you need such a model, then there is not much choice here. More precisely, you will have to choose from several versions, and they are as follows:
- Luxury tourers will provide the highest level of comfort and load capacity. They have no additional options and are suitable for driving on normal roads;
- Tourer-cruisers - have an add-on that increases load capacity, do not have additional options to increase comfort, like “suites”;
- Sport-tourers are sports bikes that have been slightly modified to increase comfort and capacity. Perhaps the fastest touring models have wind protection for the legs;
- The Tourenduro is an ideal option, capable of moving over almost any terrain and having a significant load capacity. By the way, they have the most extensive options and modifications.
In this case, the choice of a touring motorcycle is based on the needs of the driver and his desire to preserve the original style of the bike. It is difficult to say which option is better, because here everything is learned in comparison. So it’s worth getting ready for long test drives.
Bikes for travel
Road models are primarily intended for travel. And here you need to focus on:
- Where are you going to ride? If the roads are good and you don’t plan to wind your way along winding mountain paths, then any option will do. If you haven’t even heard of such a thing as “asphalt” in that area, then take an enduro or any other bike with off-road capabilities;
- Motorcycle weight. Keep in mind that situations may arise when you have to push it. And at this moment there will be your things on it, plus a spare can of gasoline. Try to get the mid-weight version - it's not so hard to push and has a pretty good load capacity;
- How long are you going to travel? This is already a question of carrying capacity. If the load is just you, your significant other, and a few sports backpacks of things, then you can take any bike. But for multi-day trips, it is better to take motorcycles with panniers (their total volume should be at least 90 liters);
- Who will you travel with? If you drive alone, then the choice of model is yours. But if there are two people together, then you should make sure that the second passenger will also feel comfortable during long trips, and not all models of bikes can offer this (for example, sports bikes are no longer needed);
- How easy is the repair? Everything is simple here - on long trips the bike will break down and it’s not a fact that there will be a service station nearby. So keep a repair kit with you and make sure you can do everything yourself.

What to choose for a city newcomer
Yamaha YBR 125 - this model became the starting point for many who eventually switched to more powerful bikes. Popularly called an “ebrik”, it is a lightweight, low-power motorcycle (125 cm3 and just over 100 kg), friendly for beginners, and easy to learn to operate. This is a very affordable “iron” horse, which is also unpretentious in maintenance.
One of the disadvantages is that if your height is more than 180 cm, then after ten kilometers your legs will start to hurt due to the unnatural position of your body. It is also worth mentioning its unassuming appearance, which for some is also an important drawback. If we consider 125 cc units, then the Yamaha YBR 125 is the ideal choice for a first motorcycle. It is unrivaled both in terms of reliability/controllability and operating costs. All that is needed is periodic maintenance of the chain.
If the appearance of the bike is very important, then pay attention to the Honda CB 400 SF. It's also a lightweight, easy-to-handle bike. This is the main model in the fleet of Japanese driving schools.
The Kawasaki W650 is an excellent choice for a beginner who has mastered 125cc well.
