At what temperature can you start a scooter?

This article talks about how to start a scooter correctly. Such common situations are considered, for example, how to start a scooter when it is cold, in the frost or without a key (only legal methods) or what to do if the scooter has trouble starting and stalls.

So, you have purchased a reliable and high-quality scooter and you believe that it will not let you down in the most difficult situations, including if you need to start the scooter engine when it is cold. However, if you start even the most reliable scooter incorrectly, you may encounter various problems? for example, drain the battery or fill the spark plugs.

Because of this, the scooter has difficulty starting, or cannot be started at all. To prevent this from happening, you need to learn how to start the scooter correctly in any situation, including if you want to start it when it’s cold.

What are the two ways to start a scooter?

If you are going to do this for the first time, you should check the presence of gasoline in the tank. Then you need to think about how to start the scooter.

First, make sure that the unit is supported on the footrest. Next, you need to insert the ignition key to o. After this, the control panel will light up, the arrow that shows the fuel level will rise up.

There are a couple of options for how to start the engine.

The first way is to use kickstarter. As a rule, the engine always starts in this case. This option can be used when the scooter battery is discharged, or it has been in the garage for a long time, for example, and no one has used it for a long time. So, you should press the folded kickstarter leg several times. Even if the scooter doesn’t start well, you shouldn’t stop. You have to press the kickstarter repeatedly to get the engine to start.

How to start a scooter in another way? The method described below can only be used with a working battery. This is done using an electric starter. It is also suitable for those who move a lot on this unit and, accordingly, stop several times. So, you will need to press the brake lever and at the same time press the starter. At the same moment you should hold the brake. The electric starter button should not be released until the engine starts.

Thus, first of all, to start a moped in winter, we unscrew the spark plug - if it’s dry, then it’s a fuel issue.

Before screwing the spark plug back in, you should check the spark. To do this, insert the spark plug into the cap and, ensuring that its threaded part is in contact with the ground (engine body, frame), turn the crankshaft with a sharp movement. Of course, you can use the emergency option and hold the cap with your hand, but it is better to use a piece of wire, one end of which is screwed to the motor body, and the other to the threaded part of the spark plug. If there is no spark, everything is clear - we buy a new one. If everything is in order, we return the spark plug to its place and try to start it.

Lost keys to your scooter: what to do?

Experts advise making a spare set to avoid situations like this. But if you still don’t have them, how to start a scooter without a key? You can try to do this yourself or contact a specialist.

Let's look at how to start a scooter without a key yourself. To gain access to the ignition switch, remove the front panel. Then unscrew the two screws and remove the contactor. Afterwards you will need a flathead screwdriver. Using it, you should turn the core until it stops. It happens that an action can only be done up to the penultimate position. It is called safe engine starting mode. It is used to prevent the scooter from moving abruptly.

If the ignition switch cannot be disassembled, then you will need to remove the chip from it. After this, you should find a contact pair.

Remember that incorrect actions can lead to damage to the scooter. In addition, following all the recommendations does not guarantee that the scooter will start right away.

Some information about management

Driving the scooter is very easy. You just need to know what is and where it is. On the right side there is a front brake lever, and on the left, respectively, a rear brake lever. There are also other elements on the dashboard.

On the right side there is a steering wheel handle. They use it to gas. To do this, you need to rotate it. There are also various kinds of switches, such as turn signals and lights. Here, among other things, you can see the starter and horn button.

How to start a scooter from a pusher?

In addition to the two main methods that were listed above, there are others. It turns out that the scooter can also be started using a rope and a pusher.

Let's consider the first method. First you need to provide access to the fan from the engine side. After this, the impeller should be wrapped with rope 4 times clockwise. Then you need to pull hard. This method is suitable when the engine is not tired. In another situation, the second method is suitable.

So how do you start a scooter using a pushrod? There is an opinion that this cannot be done, since it has a variator. Actually it is possible.

In order to do this, you must provide access to the clutch bell. It is necessary to remove the variator cover. After this, you should jam the clutch itself and the bell together. A regular bolt from the variator cover is perfect for this.

This method of setting up the scooter will require two people. One of them will have to push the unit. And the second one needs to press on the back of the scooter at the right moment. This is done to make the wheel spin. As soon as the scooter starts, the bolt you placed will immediately fall nearby. Therefore, there is no need to worry about this.

Principle of operation

Why won't my scooter start? There can be many reasons for this - from a small malfunction of the engine to a serious breakdown.

A moped differs from other types of vehicles in that it is an economical mode of transport. A typical average scooter has a 50cc engine, which is unable to burn too much fuel while driving. This explains the fact why it cannot reach very high speeds. The maximum he can do is move at a speed of no more than 60 kilometers per hour. At the same time, the safety of the moped driver is at risk, since no side safety bars are provided here, as on full-fledged motorcycles. But the reliability and simplicity of the design of this relatively cheap vehicle are so convenient for everyday use that the scooter has always been, is and will be popular among the people. But even the most unpretentious equipment sooner or later begins to act up and let down its owners. And then one fine day you are faced with the fact that the scooter will not start. This may be due to careless handling, lack of timely technical inspection, as well as objective extraneous causes, consequences of an accident, and the like.

How does starting in the cold happen?

People have to use an iron horse even in the cold season. It doesn't always start. What to do? How to start a scooter in this situation?

To do this, you need to refuel with fresh gasoline and change the oil to synthetic. The latter is distinguished by the fact that it does not thicken in the cold. And it’s better to start your iron horse using a kickstarter rather than an electric starter. How to do this was described in the previous sections of the article.

Also, after the engine starts, you should give a little more gas than usual. The actions taken will ensure that the scooter does not stall. If it still doesn’t start and stalls, you should try heating the oil with a blowtorch.

If all the described conditions are met, the engine should start at a temperature of -19 degrees. After the start, the iron horse needs to warm up for 15 minutes. After that, you can safely go along your route.

Let's start

The scooter engine start circuit is quite simple, understandable and universal, even in cases where the scooter starts when cold. First you need to insert the ignition key and immediately turn it. Then hold down the brake lever. Give a little gas and press the start button. It is important not to forget to remove the scooter from the side stand, since on some branded and Japanese models, due to the unremoved side stand, a special sensor may be triggered when the engine starts, which will prevent it from starting from the starter.

If the scooter is technically in full working order and it’s not very cold outside, then literally after a couple of seconds the engine should already be rattling peacefully, even if you start it when it’s cold - and you’ll be able to go about your business after just a few minutes of warming up the engine. Why is it important to wait? Because when driving when cold there is too much load, which is bad for the engine.

Why won't my scooter start with the button?

This situation is also common. If the scooter starts with the kickstarter instead of the button, then the problem is in the main fuse. It is located in the battery compartment. To check its serviceability you need a multimeter.

This device should be set to DC voltage measurement mode. Note the voltage results before and after the fuse. It must remain unchanged. If it drops or increases by a few volts, the fuse will need to be replaced.

The problem may not only be this, but also the engine starting circuit. Here the integrity of the connecting wiring is compromised. In order to deal with this type of problem, you will need an electrical diagram of this circuit. In addition, you need to be able to read it correctly. Therefore, in this case, you should contact an experienced specialist.

Causes of malfunction

You can determine that the carburetor is overflowing by several signs:

  1. Condition of the candle. A dirty spark plug indicates a rich fuel mixture, which means high gasoline content. Even a serviceable or new spark plug may not be able to cope with the flow of fuel entering the cylinder and over time it will become covered with soot, will be constantly wet and the engine will stop starting.
  2. Gasoline leaks through the air filter. Signs of fuel may be found in the air filter housing.
  3. Gasoline leaks through the float chamber gasket.

It is worth noting that these signs can appear either on their own or after repairs. For what reasons can the carb overflow?

Failure of the fuel valve

The tanks are equipped with vacuum fuel taps with three outlets. One of them is taking fuel from the tank, the other is supplying fuel to the carburetor. The third outlet is intended for supplying a vacuum hose. When a vacuum is created in the engine, the valve membrane begins to pump fuel.

Clogged air filter

If the amount of incoming air is insufficient, the scooter can also overflow fuel. You can diagnose the filter for air permeability as follows. Simply disconnect the air filter. If the engine now starts to work correctly, then it is necessary to change the air filter. When the carburetor on a scooter without a filter still floods, “dig deeper”!

Locking needle

Briefly about the principle of operation of the float chamber. Fuel enters it, thereby raising the float. The float, rising, lifts the locking needle behind it. When there is enough fuel in the chamber, the shut-off function closes the fuel supply hole.

If the shut-off needle is worn out (the tip or metal body is worn out), then it cannot completely close the supply hole and gasoline continues to flow. The same effect occurs if a speck (grain of sand) gets under the locking needle.
