Having stood again until the summer of 2011, the IZh waited for the start of its second life, the original fork was installed, it was true that it had to be painted again, the entire steering column was rebuilt. The arches were straightened and repainted, the battery glove compartment also had to be corrected, and both glove compartments were repainted. All the preservation grease was washed off, in some places even the seals remained, some light bulbs were changed to LEDs, some poor battery was bought, “Tyumen” if I’m not mistaken, and the actual launch. The ignition was not touched, they mixed oil with gasoline, poured it in, but it wouldn’t start, the reason was quickly found, there was no spark, the fault was that the wire had flown off the ignition switch, they didn’t keep track of the fork during the replacement process, the wire was returned, but the motorcycle still didn’t start, there was a spark , but the spark plug was dry, they poured a couple of cubes of gasoline from the tank into the spark plug hole, pressed the kick button - with half a turn, the engine that had been standing for a quarter of a century came to life and shook the floor in the garage, the feeling at that moment was indescribable, it is impossible to describe them. After working for a couple of seconds, the engine stalled again, this did not affect the resulting sensations in any way, rather it even embellished them. The problem was clear, the carburetor began to be flushed, the gasoline that had been in the tank for so many years gave a strange sediment similar to soot, which clogged everything possible. Everything was washed and put back together, the engine started, no longer at half a turn, it worked at high speeds with decent vibrations, after a little warming up I drove 100 meters away from the garage, the speed dropped to ~300, few would believe that the engine can operate at such speeds , the planet was able to, the dancing with the tambourine continued for a long time, the engine cooled down, worked normally, after warming up the speed dropped, there was no reaction to the throttle, subsequent attempts to start it were accompanied only by a squeal from the wild recoil of the kick starter. After a couple of days of thinking, it dawned on me: several capacitors were purchased for a VAZ classic, one was installed and the motorcycle worked almost as expected. But the idle speed was still not properly adjusted, the ignition instantly blew my mind with its archaism, this is perhaps the weakest unit in the engine, but at that time there was nothing else in the USSR, except perhaps induction sensors on batteryless motorcycles like Minsk and Voskhod. A set of BSZ "SoveK" with FUOZ was purchased, later, after much dancing with setting up a VAZ-2108 coil, NGK spark plugs and a silicone explosive wire, the engine worked as it seemed fabulous compared to contact ignition, but alas, still not as it should. After thinking again, I decided to look into the crank chamber, removing the piston chamber, I saw about half a liter of oil there, my thoughts were confirmed, and the new engine had to be halved - replacing the left crankshaft oil seal. After replacing the oil seal, the engine worked as a Planet engine should really work.
Until 2013, a lot of work was carried out, the motorcycle was completely repainted, an alarm system with ignition blocking, motion sensors, a gear reset sensor was installed, the engine was painted with heat-resistant silver paint, which radically changed the appearance of the motorcycle, the type of muffler was slightly changed, Michelin tires were installed for 4,000 rubles . for a tire, many were screaming about this, saying that it’s nonsense to install tires that cost more than a motorcycle, well, everyone has their own opinion on this matter, many of those screaming don’t think it’s nonsense to spend 4,000 on beer and hashish in one evening. The front wheel hub is welded with argon and machined, because after the impact a crack appeared. A huge number of other works have been carried out that could take a long time to list.
In the middle of the 2013 season, the motorcycle was registered (with new numbers), and all documents were received. The total of all expenses from the moment of purchase (not counting the cost of the motorcycle and the cost of gasoline/oil) exceeded 60 thousand, the exact amount is difficult to say, the range is 60-70 thousand. In 2 months the motorcycle ran a little over 3000 kilometers, on 92 gasoline, oil in Motul 510 fuel.
And so, the most interesting thing that was discussed at the very beginning, breakdowns, over ~3300 kilometers this season the following breakdowns happened:
1) The spark plugs have died many times, the carburetor is adjusted well, there is no carbon deposits on the spark plugs at all, there is a brown coating. The last time I installed Bosch, purchased in Soviet times, for the GAZ-24 and the problems disappeared. It’s not the motorcycle’s fault, it’s solely the quality of modern spare parts.
2) The spring of the pawls on the gear shift shaft burst (gears were downshifted with great difficulty), the motorcycle is partly to blame here, this spring is made of rather fragile steel, for a quarter of a century it was under tension in a stationary state, then it began to click hundreds of times a day, the phenomenon is called — metal fatigue is absolutely normal, I was not surprised and solved the breakdown within one evening, fortunately the simplicity of the design and maintainability of the IZh are fully justified.
3) Due to the contactless washing, water filled into all the cracks and the wires on the ignition switch oxidized, the light began to disappear periodically, after moving the cover with the wires, the problem went away, but the ignition wire was still poorly connected, for a long time I could not understand what was wrong, so I replaced it switch and coil, spark plugs 200 times, the motorcycle stalled for a month whenever it wanted and immediately started and confidently raced on, it was unpleasant when this happened at traffic lights. A month later, when the contact disappeared altogether, I still decided to look at this lock, suddenly he cursed for a long time when he realized the elementary nature of the problem.
4) This should have been indicated in the first paragraph, the first breakdown was a broken clutch cable, the clutch cable got stuck in the handle and it didn’t rotate, the cable pulled sideways and it burst due to overload, it’s not the motorcycle’s fault, not a single cable can withstand this for long, and the handles are not original they stand, I just didn’t think to sharpen them.
That’s basically all, over 3000 kilometers, in 2 months, few people travel that much on a motorcycle (of those who live in the city), in the villages there is clearly nothing to do, they travel from breakdown to breakdown, so that the motorcycle stands up tightly and I didn’t go anywhere - I never did, I always left under my own power. Any damage can be easily repaired with a screwdriver and an adjustable wrench. When you keep an eye on everything, everything is lubricated and all contacts are in order, everything is set up - IZH rushes like a tank everywhere, in any weather and at any time of the year, this motorcycle also drove in the summer in the heat through traffic jams (not every 2t with air will tolerate this) , and in downpours so that the muffler went into puddles, and in winter at -30 I raked out snowdrifts, it will always pull it out from anywhere, and you always know that it will take you home no matter what.
