About the 2021 KTM 85 SX children's motocross motorcycle, we can say that it was built from scratch. If we compare it with last year’s model, significant changes affected the power unit and chassis. We present to your attention a list of all modifications:
Cylinders
Now the operation of the cylinders is regulated by a system of power valves. As with the KTM 125SX and 250SX models, the position of the power valve can be adjusted. By changing the timing and speed of the valves opening and closing, you can influence the amount of power supplied.
The crankshaft is lighter and has more inertia. Vibration has been reduced by optimizing the balance.
The clutch with diaphragm springs has become more compact and stronger.
Carter
The crankcase is designed in such a way that the internal shafts are located as close to the center of gravity as possible.
Transmission
Gears, shafts and forks have become lighter.
Valve adjustment Ktm 85 SX 17/14
Check the valve thermal clearances according to the service manual for your Ktm 85 SX 17/14, as well as after disassembling the head or replacing the timing chain or when a characteristic “clunking noise” appears from the cylinder head.
Increased valve clearances lead to increased noise when the engine is running, and if the clearances are too small, the valves will not close, and the engine will not develop rated power, and sometimes it will be difficult to start.
Our service center provides:
Please note that after adjusting the valves, in some cases it is necessary to synchronize the carburetors.
Plastic KTM 85 SX
The plastic is no different from the older KTM SX models.
Air intake
The air intake is easily accessible without the need for tools. Same as in adult models.
The overall dimensions of the new 85SX are no different from last year's. The steering column angle is the same 24 degrees, the wheelbase is 1290 mm, the ground clearance is 353 mm, and the seat height is 856 mm.
Advantages and disadvantages
The KTM 85 has a whole list of advantages that drown out many disadvantages, including high cost:
- High quality build.
- Use of ultra-strong and lightweight materials.
- Simplicity and light weight design.
- Reliable self-cleaning disc brakes.
- Suspension with enough travel for off-road racing.
- Stylish appearance.
- Powerful protectors.
- Comfortable fit.
- Excellent maneuverability.
There are also weaknesses, among them:
- Almost complete lack of engine protection.
- Seat height too high.
- The cost of the motorcycle, according to potential buyers, is too high.
Cross motorcycles for children
Members of Japan's Big Four rarely improve motorcycles for children, but KTM has a different policy. They believe that fans of their motorcycles should be raised from childhood and taught them the best. If a child's first motorcycle was a KTM 65SX, then when he grows up, he will most likely want a KTM 85 SX. And after riding the KTM 85 SX, he will move on to the KTM 125SX, 250SXF and finally the 450SXF. Kawasaki and Yamaha also have 65cc motocross models in their lineup. But unlike KTM, they do not offer a full range of motorcycles: motocross, off-road, enduro and dual-purpose motorcycles. No manufacturer has spent as much effort and money creating a line of motorcycles for children as KTM.

KTM 85 SX fork
A 43mm WP AER air fork is standard on the KTM 85 SX. It can be adjusted according to several parameters. Riders of different sizes took part in the test drive. Interestingly, larger riders never complained about the shock bottoming out. And smaller riders never complained about the stiffness of the suspension. WP has come a long way, but they have found the secret ingredient to make their products the best on the market.

The KTM 85 SX is a true racing motorcycle.
The 85SX is powerful enough to impress even professional riders. Pilots usually underestimate small but powerful engines. The KTM 85 SX is a true racing motorcycle. It doesn't grip very well in the low range. But in the mid-range the motorcycle simply explodes with power. Maximum power is 21.5 hp. If you want more power or change the nature of its supply, then adjust the position of the power valve. It's not difficult to do this. First you need to ride the KTM 85 SX, then turn the valve adjustment knob located to the right of the engine 1/8 clockwise. Ride again. Turn the adjustment knob counterclockwise 1/8 (from the original position). Determine in which position of the adjustment knob, the power of the motorcycle suits you best. Continue to rotate the handle little by little in this direction until you find the position you want. These adjustments have a significant impact on power delivery, so it's worth the time and effort to try out several positions.
Review and technical characteristics of ktm 85
KTM sx is the name of a new series of sports motocross motorcycles from the famous Austrian company. At the moment, the company has produced lightweight equipment for extreme off-road driving with engine capacities of 85, 125, 150 and 250 cubic centimeters. Each motorcycle in the series is designed for people of a certain age and build.
For example, the smallest capacity equipment - the KTM 85 sx model - is intended for children and teenagers (from 11 to 15 years old) who decide to engage in motocross professionally . Light weight and dimensions are combined in this model with unsurpassed ease of control.
Disadvantages of the KTM 85 SX:
Preload ring. The plastic preload ring must be replaced with a stronger one. If you apply excessive force to it, you can deform it. We used a long flathead screwdriver.
Power valve regulator. To adjust the KTM power valve, you must use a square nut wrench. We didn't have such a tool. I had to get out.
The screw with the air release hole has a No. 15 star slot. Once again we didn't have the right tool. I had to use a hex head wrench. Everything would be much simpler if a Phillips head screw was used.
Steering wheel cushion. It’s not at all clear why KTM can’t install normal handlebar cushions on their motorcycles?
The ODI pens themselves are pretty good. But again. If you want to change them, you will need a special hex key.
The air intake , although similar to the air intakes installed on adult models, is very difficult to remove. In order to get to the air filter, I had to use a flathead screwdriver. So, you shouldn’t believe the manufacturer’s statements that you won’t need tools to remove the air intake.
Symptoms of engine repair on a Ktm 85 SX 17/14 are:
- Extraneous noise in the engine
- High oil consumption
- Coolant flow
- Low compression in the engine or large difference between cylinders
- Excessively high compression associated with carbon deposits in the combustion chamber
- Blue smoke from the muffler
- Obvious oil leak from the engine
- Transmission problems
- Dismantling Ktm 85 SX 17/14 to remove the engine
- Removing the Ktm 85 SX 17/14 engine
- Cleaning the engine before disassembly
- Disassembling the motor
- Complete engine troubleshooting
- Cleaning the engine from metal shavings and other contaminants
- Diagnosis of all engine bearings and gears
- Replacement of worn/broken/bent parts
- Engine assembly
- Checking valve clearances
- Engine installation on Ktm 85 SX 17/14
- Final assembly of Ktm 85 SX 17/14, launch
- All engine repair work is carried out by a highly qualified mechanic with extensive experience. A 1 year guarantee is provided for all work performed.
Stages of work on repairing the Ktm 85 SX 17/14 engine:
Advantages of the KTM 85 SX:
Engine. The motorcycle is really very fast.
The brakes are the best in their class.
Hydraulic clutch. No Japanese motorcycle, regardless of size, is equipped with a self-adjusting hydraulic clutch, but the KTM 85 SX is equipped.
Fork. The WP AER forks are very good. They are easy to use and very effective.
Power valve regulator. It's nice to be able to independently adjust the power delivery depending on the track and personal preferences.
Technical parameters of the model
The Ktm 85 sx has quite attractive quality indicators, thanks to which there is a demand for the motorcycle:
Seat height | 85.5 cm |
Weight (dry) | 68 kg |
Speed | about 115 km/h |
Fuel tank volume | 5 l. |
Engine | 2-stroke 1-cylinder liquid cooled |
Engine capacity | 85 cu. cm |
Start | Kickstarter |
Cylinder diameter; piston stroke | 4.7; 4.89 cm |
Brakes | Disk |
Suspensions (front; rear) | Inverted telescopic fork; pendulum with monoshock absorber |
Since the KTM 85 motorcycle is intended for teenagers, its weight and dimensions are quite miniature. The simple design is at the same time highly durable and reliable - any cross-country equipment must meet these requirements. The responsive suspension with a travel of more than 25 cm takes on all the unevenness of the road surface and sharp turns. Disc brakes improve the model's handling, increasing the level of safety for the novice motorcyclist. It should be noted that the frame of the equipment is made of chrome-molybdenum steel - this determined not only the correct geometry, but also good stability, balancing, and controllability.
The KTM 85 sx motorcycle, information about all the characteristics of which is still unknown, has a fuel tank measuring 5 liters. Considering the low fuel consumption, this volume of the gas tank will be enough for any trips on a specialized route. The stylish modern design of the motorcycle (painted with graffiti), as well as a minimum of plastic parts, made the model more attractive and interesting. Despite the high cost of the equipment (about 300 thousand rubles), the 85 cc model has its fans from the category of people who are not accustomed to saving on the education of their children.
Clutch repair and replacement Ktm 85 SX 17/14
One of the most important mechanisms of the Ktm 85 SX 17/14 is the clutch. Although this is a fairly simple structural element, it has an important task. The operation of the clutch is based on the frictional force between its discs. The torque of the motor is transmitted to the driven parts, which in turn transmit the torque of the gearbox.
The need for clutch repair in Moscow is dictated by various factors, among which are intensive operating conditions. In addition, repair of the Ktm 85 SX 17/14 clutch is required in case of planned wear of its individual elements.
Common clutch problems Ktm 85 SX 17/14
Clutch repair or maintenance involves the following work:
Diagnostics and replacement of timing chain, repair of timing chain tensioner Ktm 85 SX 17/14
Quite often, a malfunction of the Ktm 85 SX 17/14 timing chain is caused by an increase in the pitch between the links. As a result, the engine begins to idle incorrectly. Therefore, it is not at all surprising that the chain begins to jump several teeth at the same time. What does this mean? Firstly, the engine will stall. Secondly, the valves may be jammed. This, in turn, may require expensive engine repairs. Therefore, when the first signs of a malfunction are detected, it is recommended to replace the timing chain on Ktm 85 SX 17/14.
