Developments of Honda Shadow 400

The Honda Shadow 400 motorcycle was first introduced in 1997, 5 years before the 400th “Shame” was discontinued. This event was timed to coincide with the release of the updated Honda Shadow 750 ACE, which changed the general approach to this series of motorcycles. Previously, for the Honda Steed 400, the older model was a 600 cc version, which was distinguished by a calm character, above them there was a 750 cc version with a forced engine, the characteristics of which were changed. As a result, the 600 cc cruiser was discontinued, and in its place came a new 750 cc version, designated Shadow, with a detuned engine and updated design.

Despite the fact that the Honda Steed 400 was very popular, it was clear to everyone that at least a change in the designation of this motorcycle was expected. From 1997 to 2001, both “Shame” and “Shadow” coexisted on the market in parallel, which is interesting; they even had the same factory designation NV400.

The question arises: why couldn’t the Honda Steed 400 be removed from sale and not create competition between the products of the same company? And in fact, in 1997, they really tried to take “Shame” out of the game and discontinued it, but they returned it by the beginning of 1998, and even added a new modification with a springer. What was the reason for the return, the consumer’s love for a particular model, or some specific plans of the company for the parallel development of the Honda Steed 400, one can only guess.

Since the Honda Shadow 400 became the junior model of the 750 cc version, all the changes in both models were identical, except that the names of the motorcycles differed. So in 2000, the Honda Shadow 400 Slasher appeared, which received a new exhaust afterburning system, the ability to install an immobilizer, some visual differences and changes in the motorcycle suspension settings.

At the end of 2008, two new models were introduced to replace the previous ones: Honda Shadow 400 Classic and Honda Shadow 400 Custom. The main changes for both modifications were that now the injector, rather than carburetors, was responsible for the air-fuel mixture, and it should also be noted that the chain drive was abandoned in favor of a driveshaft. In addition, the Honda Shadow 400 Classic received two exhaust pipes, instead of the previously used 2 into 1 exhaust system. The front wheel brake disc was also moved to the right side, and the rear wheel became slightly narrower - 160 millimeters. The Honda Shadow 400 Custom has a 21-inch front wheel, the shape of the rear wing has been changed, and the fuel tank has been increased by one liter, becoming fourteen liters. In addition, the factory designation of the motorcycles was changed from NV400 to VT400.

In 2010, the Honda Shadow VT400S was introduced, which had smaller dimensions compared to previous models and a slightly redesigned design. It was decided to return to the “roots”, and the motorcycle was made in a style strongly reminiscent of the Honda Steed.

In 2014, the Honda Shadow 400 Custom and Honda Shadow VT400S models were discontinued, and 2 years later, in 2021, the last Honda Shadow 400 Classic motorcycle was released.

This motorcycle was produced only for the Japanese market and was and is only available outside of Japan in used form.

But what class should we include a motorcycle that has a little bit of everything? A good bike should have a reliable engine, comfortable ergonomics and simple controls.

Despite the fact that good models of motorcycles have a very respectable price, and the season for their use is relatively short, the motorcycle market is developing rapidly. And if you believe the words of dealers, then some models of recently released motorcycles are selling like hot cakes at the beginning of the season, and the models brought to Russia are clearly not enough to fully satisfy consumer demand.

A motorcycle has long ceased to be an alternative to a car, and the times when this equipment was bought only because there was not enough money for a full-fledged car are forgotten. Nowadays, two-wheelers can be called technological marvels in many cases, and their cost can be compared with that of prestigious cars.

Many people have started buying motorcycles for hobby purposes as riding or even collecting them has become a good pastime for many people. Many motorcycles, for example the Honda CBX 400 Custom, whose technical characteristics allow the model to be called a prestigious brand, are in demand among both beginners and experienced motorcyclists.

Currently, it is impossible to purchase a new Honda CBX 400 Custom motorcycle from the 1983 model year, since their production stopped 33 years ago. At the same time, the Honda CBX 400 Custom has excellent technical characteristics, so many people strive to purchase, if not a new, then at least a used version.

In this range you already have a choice among almost all classes of motorcycles. Many people call this category the most suitable for a first motorcycle. You can purchase a moderately heavy, powerful and flexible motorcycle for relatively little money. Many people advise taking a road bike with a 400 cc engine as your first choice. We cannot completely agree with this, because such motorcycles often weigh about 200 kg and have a sufficient power reserve. If your skills in riding a two-wheeled vehicle are limited to a training motorcycle at a motorcycle school, then you should not immediately take such a device. Many beginners get into ridiculous accidents simply because they do not know all the features of operating such equipment. After all, the heavier and more powerful the motorcycle, the better you should know how to handle it in different situations. Even a monkey can just drive in a straight line (no joke).

Java 634-8-00

Modernization of Java About three years have passed since the start of deliveries of the new road motorcycle Java-634 to the Soviet Union. At first it was a modification of Java 634.01, then Java 634.04, which differed from the first in some details. Czechoslovak specialists carefully studied the experience of operating the machines, as well as the comments and wishes of Soviet motorcyclists, expressed, in particular, during meetings of friends of JAVA in the USSR, and made a number of changes to the design. Thanks to this, the technical and consumer qualities of the machine have significantly improved. In addition, in the interests of traffic safety, some innovations have been introduced, dictated by the latest Soviet standards. And from the beginning of this year, the Jawa plant began producing a modification, designated Jawa 634.8.00. How is it different from its predecessor? The color immediately attracts attention - it is red, and not cherry, as it was before. A mirror appeared on the left handle of the steering wheel, allowing you to see the situation from behind.

How Czechoslovakian mechanical engineers take into account the proposals of Java motorcycle owners from the USSR

One goal - quality At the end of 1984, YAVA-350 motorcycles of the model “638-5-00” (see “Behind the Wheel”, 1986, No. 3) began to arrive in our stores, differing from its predecessor - “634.00” mainly in the engine and electrical equipment (12 instead of 6 V), as well as a front fork. Owners of new cars positively assessed the improvements. At the same time, they expressed wishes regarding the manufacture of certain components, especially engine parts. Czechoslovak specialists - technologists, designers, having analyzed letters from consumers from the USSR, implemented a set of measures that take into account their suggestions. This work was completed last fall. And recently the scientific editor of the magazine, engineer B. SINELNY KOV, visited Czechoslovakia and got acquainted with the production of motorcycles at Czechoslovak factories. There is probably no need to talk about the great popularity of the JAVA and ChZ motorcycles, which have been attracting our motorcyclists for thirty years with their chassis.

Jerking when engaging the clutch

“On the IZh motorcycle, when starting off, jerks in the transmission began to be felt. What could be the reason?" - asks L. Koltsovsky from the city of Shakhty. A similar phenomenon on the IZh, as well as on other motorcycles with a multi-disc clutch, indicates a malfunction of this unit. Usually jerks when engaging the clutch (that is, when starting off) occur due to the fact that its disks do not touch simultaneously and not over the entire area. Most often, the reason is warping of the discs or the formation of dents in the grooves of the drums. To fix the problem, you need to disassemble the clutch and replace damaged parts. If the dents in the grooves are shallow, you can level their surfaces with a file, so that the teeth of the disks touch all the grooves at the same time. It should be borne in mind that in excessively wide grooves, the disc teeth will knock against their edges when engaging and disengaging the clutch while the motorcycle is moving. This will lead to intensive wear of the drum grooves. In some cases, the clutch does not engage.

Extending the service life of the RP1S relay for motorcycles IZH-Planet 3, Jupiter-3

A more reliable method For some motorcycles IZH-P3, IZH-YU3, the electronic relay RP1S of the turn indicators is constantly turned on along with the ignition, which shortens its service life. It was suggested that it should only work when the turn indicators are turned on (in B.F. Demchenko’s book “Tips” for motorcyclists", published by DOSAAF, 1986 and the magazine "Behind the Wheel"), a minor modification of the relay by changing the power circuits and introducing two diodes. However, they turned out to impair the clarity of the relay operation. In order to eliminate this drawback, I found a more reliable way to connect the relay with the same change in the power circuits, but without additional diodes. Instead of the standard turn signal switch, we install a P25 A light switch (it is sold in all auto and motorcycle stores) and connect it as shown in figure (b). Do not forget to seal the three additional terminals from the relay like the existing ones. A. KOROLCHUK Volyn region, village. Milushi Output stage of relay RP1S and.

IZH Planet 3-01, IZH Jupiter 3-01 (3K-01)

More comfortable, more powerful, safer This year the five-millionth machine rolled off the assembly line of the Izhmash motorcycle production association. The motorcycle manufacturing team celebrated this event by switching to the production of modernized models “IZH-Planeta-3-01” and “IZH-Jupiter-3-01”. What's new in them, how are they different? We carried out modernization in three main areas: enhancing active and passive safety, improving ride comfort, and increasing power. Let's start with safety. Both models feature protective arches, a steering-wheel-mounted rear-view mirror, and extended turn signal brackets. Our motorcycles will now be equipped with flip-up passenger footrests to prevent leg injuries. The clutch and front brake control levers have 20mm rubber balls. If the car falls, the motorcyclist no longer runs the risk of being injured by the sharp end of the lever. Modification "IZH&m.

Technical characteristics of Honda Shadow 400

The technical characteristics of the Honda Shadow 400 do not arouse any interest; there is no highlight in this motorcycle that immediately catches the eye. But there is a feature thanks to which the Honda Shadow 400 has become a fairly popular motorcycle, not only in Japan, but also in those countries where the technology is “wearable” by the Japanese. We are talking about an engine that was inherited from the Honda Steed 400.

Despite the fact that the characteristics of all V-shaped Japanese “scabies” +/- are the same, this engine can be distinguished separately. And the reason is not in its parameters, but in reliability and a large, in comparison with competitors, operating life without major repairs. This engine was also installed on equipment of other classes, for example, on the classic Honda Roadster VRX400 motorcycle, the Honda Bros NT400 naked bike and the Honda Transalp XL400V touring enduro.

But we should not forget that odes of praise to the engine cannot in any way protect it from untimely maintenance and attempts to squeeze out the maximum, which significantly reduces its service life. And there are quite a lot of examples of crooked tuning of this particular engine by our compatriots. In general, even taking into account all its reliability, you should not buy the Honda Shadow 400 blindly without a thorough inspection.

Weight and dimensions characteristics of motorcycles Honda Shadow 400

Generally speaking, the Honda Shadow 400 is a simple motorcycle in its design in a classic cruiser layout with a small-capacity V-twin engine. From this we can conclude that, like all other motorcycles in this class, it will have considerable weight. Indeed, the curb weight, depending on the modification, varies from 229 kilograms to 255. However, this weight is balanced by a very low center of gravity, which makes the motorcycle quite comfortable even for physically weak people. It is for this reason that many recommend this model to girls.

The large mass of the motorcycle adds to its stability in motion and greater confidence when passing air turbulence from heavy vehicles on high-speed sections of the highway, but there is one unpleasant point - the engine's capabilities. Despite the fact that the Honda Shadow 400 has a stated maximum speed of up to 145 kilometers per hour, which seems to be enough, the motorcycle clearly lacks the dynamics to advance and especially overtake, which can create some problems for an inexperienced motorcyclist.

In the city, the characteristics of a motorcycle may seem ideal, but there is a pitfall here too. Like all cruisers, the Honda Shadow 400 is quite wide, which, again, will create difficulties for an inexperienced motorcyclist when driving in heavy traffic, completely killing all the advantages of a motorcycle as a means of transportation around the city.

Many owners complain about their motorcycle brakes. Indeed, the complaint is quite justified, given the mass that is in motion. But no one bothers you to install softer brake pads and timely service the rear wheel drum brake to get rid of this problem.

NV 400 Custom

The Honda NV 400 Custom motorcycle belongs to the majority of products produced by the famous Japanese concern. It's no secret that motorcycle devices from this manufacturer, as a rule, cannot boast of supernatural characteristics. At the same time, this very high-quality equipment is distinguished by high quality, durability and reliability.

The Honda Custom model is a typical motorcycle from Honda. Several of the best developments of the Japanese concern's engineers are simultaneously concentrated here. Initially, the model was intended exclusively for the American market.

Therefore, it has modification features that most motorcycle devices sold in the United States have. The American market dictates the conditions to which manufacturers adapt. For example, the American version of the Honda Custom differs from the European version in the arrangement of connecting rods.

For the American, the latter are located on one neck, which leads to more intense vibrations of the power unit. As a result, the sound emanating from the engine is reminiscent of the growl of motorcycle fashion trendsetter Harley-Davidson.

The enterprising Japanese quickly recognized the Americans' craving for everything powerful, big and rumbling. Therefore, a number of models rolled off the assembly line of the famous manufacturer, the appearance of which is very similar to Harley-Davidson. This design decision had a very positive effect on the sales level.

Honda Custom fully meets all of the above requirements. Therefore, the model quickly found its buyer in the American motorcycle market. It is worth noting that there are quite a few fans of this model in our country.

Today, the motorcycle market offers a huge number of variations of the Honda Custom, differing significantly from each other. While some have just been released, others have been enjoying great success on the market for many years, and others have long been taken off the market. Now you can see them only on the Internet or in a private collection.

In 1984, the next version of the described model, the Honda NV 400 Custom, rolled off the assembly line of the Japanese manufacturer. Its heart was a four hundred cc power unit with a rated power of 43 horsepower at 9500 rpm. This motorcycle was a smaller copy of the VT500C model.

However, at that time there were two other versions available on the market: VT700C and VT750C. The first of them was intended exclusively for the US domestic market. While the second was available in the Japanese and European markets. Hydraulic compensators in the valve mechanism and two spark plugs per combustion chamber are the main features of the VT750C.

In 1985, engineers of the Japanese concern carried out the first modernization of the VT500C and NV400 Custom models. As a result, the rectangular headlight was replaced by a round one. The devices were also equipped with a new saddle with a backrest for the passenger. But the most anticipated new product of that season was the VT1100C model, intended for the American market.

The motorcycle was equipped with a four-cylinder power unit with a displacement of 1099 cubic centimeters. The rated power of the device, declared by the manufacturer, is 78 horsepower. Subsequently, this model was repeatedly modernized. But the manufacturer forgot about the Honda NV 400 Custom.

Therefore, today it can only be purchased in maintained condition. You can find advertisements for its sale on the pages of thematic forums or in advertisements for sale. Even today it is quite possible to find a motorcycle in decent technical condition.

What are the common breakdowns typical for the Honda Shadow 400?

Considering the overall reliability of the engine and gearbox, one could say that the Honda Shadow 400 has nothing to break, but this cannot be said. If we are talking about relatively new motorcycles that were serviced in a timely manner, were not stored in the open air, and the previous owner understood what kind of equipment it was and did not try to squeeze out of the motorcycle what he could not, then all this is fair.

But for motorcycles produced in the late 90s and early 2000s, such statements will not be true, with rare exceptions. Almost all rubber products in such motorcycles will be, if not worn out, then simply old. The fork will require not just an oil change, but also thoughtful maintenance with the replacement of worn elements. This also applies to motorcycle brakes. We will have to completely reconsider all the wiring for loose wire insulation and oxidized contacts. In other words, in order for “Honda not to break down” you will have to put in some effort and spend money.

But all this is not because the motorcycle is bad or unreliable. There is simply nothing and no one who becomes younger over the years, and since a motorcycle is not cognac, age does not benefit it, regardless of the make and model.

Pros and cons of the Honda Shadow 400

The advantages of the Honda Shadow 400 include:

  • the relatively low cost of both the motorcycle itself and the parts and consumables for it;
  • high reliability of the engine and gearbox;
  • the seat on some modifications can compete in comfort with the most comfortable chairs.

There were also some drawbacks:

  • the presence of amateur “tuning” on many motorcycles;
  • age of technology;
  • limited motorcycle capabilities.

Who can I recommend the Honda Shadow 400 to?

Despite the fact that everyone shouts that the Honda Shadow 400 is the ideal motorcycle for a beginner, it cannot be said that sellers of used Japanese equipment are 100% right. In addition to its truly very calm character, the motorcycle has several specific features that in no way allow it to be recommended for a novice motorcyclist.

First of all, it is necessary to note the very low acceleration dynamics after 90 kilometers per hour. This is enough for moving around the city, but on the highway it can become a problem. A fairly common situation is when on a stretch of road at a high speed limit there are several buses following each other or heavy vehicles, or even slow-moving agricultural machinery in general. For a novice motorcyclist, this can become a big problem precisely because of the lack of dynamics, and not the speed ceiling. This problem is especially relevant in the case when you have to overtake, rather than advance, that is, drive into the oncoming lane.

But if no one is going to travel outside the city, then yes, indeed, this “itch” can be recommended as the first motorcycle. There really are enough technical capabilities for moving around the city, but the fact that a motorcycle cannot fit into any gap formed can even be assessed as a plus for a first-season driver - there will be no temptation to climb into places where it is too early to climb. But someday you will still have to go out on the track, and here it is better to look towards the 750cc version of the motorcycle, although with the caveat that for beginners it is better to look towards more recent motorcycles with derated engines.

Using a chain cover from a motorcycle Voskhod on Java 634

Covers for Java On some Java-634 motorcycles (from the first batches of delivery), chain covers fail quite quickly, and it is still difficult to purchase new ones. Instead, you can use covers from the Voskhod motorcycle to protect the chain. Alteration of the casing: 1— frame; 2—plate; 3— spacer sleeve; 4 - old part of the casing; 5 - extension To secure them. it is necessary to make two extensions 5 (see figure) and two spacer bushings 3, through which we connect the halves of the casing. We make extensions using a mandrel. We weld (or solder) frames 1 to them, which we first cut off from the old casings using a thin chisel. It is advisable to seal all connections on the casing by soldering or another method. For more reliable fastening of the covers, you should make new clamps or strengthen the old ones by welding metal plates to them. On my motorcycle, after a run of 5,000 kilometers, the covers have their original appearance.A. KORNILOV 606230, Gorky region.

Conversion of Java electrical equipment 6V to 12V

Remaking the electrical equipment of Java Our magazine has repeatedly discussed the shortcomings of the power supply of the YAVA-634 motorcycle, produced before 1985. At low crankshaft speeds (up to 1800 per minute), the 6-volt generator does not produce energy, and all consumers at this time are powered by the battery. If the lights and headlights are on, the battery is quickly discharged, which, with repeated cycles, leads to its failure. The only measure to avoid this trouble is to maintain medium speed even on bad roads or stops at intersections. It is clear that this causes great inconvenience, especially for residents of rural areas. The currently produced YABE model “638” uses a 12-volt electrical system (its description and diagram are given in No. 6, 1987), where a more advanced and powerful generator begins to work already at 1000 rpm. It is clear that many owners of the old model want to switch to new electrical equipment, but encounter obstacles.

How to achieve smooth brake action on a Java motorcycle

“I can’t seem to get smooth brake action on my Java motorcycle. Braking occurs jerkily, although the pads and cables are in good condition. What could be the reason?" - asks K. Lobachev named after the city of Kolomna. Jerks when braking motorcycles and cars are typical for those cases when the brake drums have an irregular (oval, faceted, etc.) shape of the working surface. The pads are pressed against it unevenly - stronger in areas located closer to the drum axis, weaker - in areas farther from it. In motorcycle (spoke) wheels, the shape of the drum is usually disrupted by strong impacts on various obstacles or due to uneven tension of the spokes (most often after reassembling the wheel ).To eliminate drum deformation, first adjust the tension of the spokes, and if this is not enough, grind the working surface of the drum on a lathe. The best results are obtained by processing the drum in the assembled wheel. If the machine is not called.

Motorcycle IZh Planet Sport. The most frequently asked questions and their answers

In questions and answers Recently, the editors have increasingly received letters from readers with questions about the IZH-Planet-Sport motorcycle. We selected the most typical ones and contacted the manufacturer. The answers of designers and specialists are in front of you. What changes has the motorcycle undergone during the production process from the beginning of production to the present? There are quite a lot of changes. Let's name the main ones. The engine has a new cylinder head. Now its fins are not “fan-shaped”, but regular, and instead of a “jockey cap” type combustion chamber, there is a chamber formed by concentric spheres. The number of screws holding the crankcase halves and the cover together has been increased, and the engine mount to the motorcycle frame has been strengthened. The shape of the muffler has been improved, which prevents it from coming into contact with the road when the car tilts, and the diameter of the exhaust pipe has also been increased. The imported Mikuni carburetor was replaced by the domestic K62M, which has a f.

Disadvantages of the 12V system and ways to improve it

The 12-volt 12-volt electrical system on motorcycles solved many problems in one fell swoop. With the same dimensions of the generators, it was possible to almost double their power. It has become possible to use the same optical elements of headlights on motorcycles as on cars, and this is not only economically feasible, but also very beneficial for traffic safety, since motorcyclists finally have good bright light at their disposal. But the topic of our conversation today is about the shortcomings of the system, about ways to improve it. And again, as last time (“Behind the Wheel,” 1988, No. 3), we will talk mainly about the instruments of IZH motorcycles, the most popular ones. Object number one is the battery. To be honest, its durability is often inferior to that of a 6-volt one. And the fault is not the generator, everything is in order here, there are no complaints about it. The most complaints are caused by the operation of the relay regulator, which is mainly
