The Polaris Sportsman 400 ATV is the most inexpensive model among the entire Polaris line. This ATV is equipped with a four-stroke single-cylinder power plant with a displacement of 455 cubic meters. The rated power with this volume is 40 horsepower, which is a pretty good indicator for such motorcycles. The engine can be started either using an electric starter or manually. The model’s performance is quite enough to overcome very difficult areas, for example, rocky or very rough terrain.
This ATV has an automatic all-wheel drive system, also known as AWD. The essence of this system is that if the wheels of the drive axle slip, the front drive is engaged, and after the difficult section has been passed, the system returns everything to its original form. Thus, fuel consumption has been reduced and driving comfort has been increased, since all-wheel drive is engaged automatically depending on the load. The machine is also equipped with a sealed front case, designed for a volume of 25 liters. A wide variety of cargo can be transported on the rear trunk, but it is worth noting that the maximum transported weight should not exceed 80 kilograms.
The main features of the Polaris 400 ATV are the following:
- In addition to optimal power and economical fuel consumption, the engine used also features a significantly increased service life.
- The ATV has good handling and a smooth ride thanks to the IRS independent rear suspension, which works well on any terrain.
- The radiator of the power unit was installed much higher than in previous models. Due to this solution, this element is protected from damage when driving off-road, as well as from dirt.
- Improved controllability of the equipment was achieved due to four brakes with hydraulic drives.

Reviews
- I purchased this ATV completely new in the basic configuration. At first, the model performed very well, but later some shortcomings began to appear. First of all, it was the reliability that put me in doubt, since the electric starter suddenly failed on the new equipment. Replaced it under warranty. Another weak link was the rear cargo platform, as it does not sit firmly in place and moves away a little, although perhaps I just came across such a copy. Now the car has quite a lot of mileage and besides these shortcomings I have not identified any others, but still some doubts remain, since various noises often appear.
- I have known Polaris for quite a long time. There were snowmobiles and ATVs. This model was purchased from a friend of mine, who, by the way, drove quite carefully and monitored its condition. In this regard, the technology did not incur additional costs for me. I was very pleased with the ATV when driving in the snow; it practically didn’t get stuck the whole time. The all-wheel drive system is also very convenient, connecting and disengaging automatically. Fuel consumption also left a good impression; a full tank lasts for a very long distance. In terms of maintenance, everything is quite simple, I checked the fluid levels, bolts and drove off. I haven’t encountered any repairs yet, but I think it won’t cause me any particular difficulties, because the design is quite convenient and affordable.

Selecting an ATV
I used to always ride two-wheelers. In winter I often rode motocross motorcycles, but you don’t get real pleasure from riding as you do in summer, especially in winter it’s not safe entertainment. It happened like this: I fell once on the ice, then I had to treat my shoulder for six months.
Before buying an ATV, I spent a long time choosing from our two-seater and Chinese ones. I was counting on the amount of 250 thousand rubles. I read a lot of reviews from owners about different models, how they are serviced and repaired, the price of spare parts, weak points, engine sizes and off-road capabilities. After that I realized that for 250 tr. You can’t buy reliable equipment in decent condition.
In January, a good offer appeared - an American two-seater ATV polaris sportsman 570 touring for 360 rubles.
I called and arrived. At the first inspection, the condition seemed good to me; I didn’t notice any special defects.
A cold engine with an injector at a temperature of minus 20 started up immediately. The front and rear gearboxes are silent on the move, the variator and engine are also without complaints, the driveshafts are free of play. The tires are in good condition.
Plus, the ATV had additional equipment: rear panniers, casting, underbody protection, front bumper. If I bought it all myself, I would spend about 80 rubles.
Among the shortcomings I saw: the plastic in front is broken, one rear shock absorber is faulty, the front shock absorbers are also on the way. I wanted to reduce the price a little, but the owner did not budge, since the price of his ATV was the cheapest on the Internet.
At home, after the first trip, more shortcomings emerged, mainly in the chassis:
- The rear stabilizer link housing pipe is broken. I only felt it when I drove over bumps;
- I noticed play in the front and rear arms and bearings when I jacked up the ATV.
restoration of stabilizer pipe
restored stabilizer link tube
I decided not to drive anymore, but to get it repaired first.
