Polaris Sportsman Big Boss 6×6 800 EFI ATV: Review

The Polaris 800 Pro RMK is a universal mountain snowmobile that can not only be ridden, but also perform work tasks, for example, towing loads of up to 500 kg on a sled. The driving performance of this American is excellent - it flies briskly along well-groomed roads, through loose snowdrifts, and on slippery ice. The Polaris Pro RMK 800 power plant has a displacement of 795 cubic meters, which has an excellent effect on movement speed. Long Competition tracks with high lugs provide high flotation and stability.

Design and equipment

The Pro-Ride frame and suspension are lightweight to make the snow machine faster and more maneuverable. Carbon inserts protect internal parts in the event of a collision. The basic package includes the following elements:

  • Electric starter;
  • Reverse gear;
  • Heated steering wheel grips and throttle trigger;
  • Windshield;
  • Passenger backrest;
  • Rear towbar;
  • Speedometer;
  • Odometer;
  • Front reinforced bumper;
  • Rear reinforced bumper;

The Polaris 800 RMK is simple and easy to control. The equipment is able to maintain balance even when taking sharp turns. The side steps are made of aluminum. They are wide and your feet won't slip off them.

We meet you by clothes: test drive from the first person

The updated all-terrain vehicle received a nice “face” in the image and likeness of the very successful Polaris Sportsman 800 model. And at the same time, all the options - from a large windshield and heated steering wheel grips to a winch and a front trunk made of durable plastic with a reliable lid. The headlight turns with the steering wheel, which is very convenient on a dark highway; The dashboard is electronic. Against the backdrop of such luxury, the scanty “one and a half” seat is surprising, to put it mildly. You can take a passenger with you, but it’s better not to even dream of any comfort during the trip. A large car could easily be equipped with two full-fledged seats for passengers. It's strange that they didn't do this.

A two-cylinder injection 800 cc water-cooled engine with a power of 64 hp, borrowed from the same “Sportsman 800”, was placed in the FRAME of the front part of the car. It’s even awkward to compare with the previous carburetor “five hundred”, which produced 35 horsepower.

As for the chassis, the suspension - both the McPherson front and the independent rear - have become softer, not as “woody” as on the previous “Big Boss”. But the anti-roll bars are stiffer here.

And most importantly, the headaches caused by the chain drives of the two rear axles are forever a thing of the past. For a vehicle that operates in difficult off-road conditions, these chains were constantly stretched, and therefore could fly off the gears at any moment. Now, having “overturned” the body, you see two powerful cardans: one from the transfer case to the front axle, the second connects this axle to the rear axle. And six more cardans transmit torque to six wheels. This whole enterprise is tied into one iron knot, and, as the chief mechanic of the Brandt, Misha Kufarev, put it, “It turned out to be a terrible hope!”

Owner reviews

  • It doesn’t matter to him whether it’s a prepared track or impassable snow, he rushes everywhere. Now we go fishing with the men even more often. It has never broken yet, I hope it will continue to do so in the future.
  • My friends and I often go out onto steep snow-covered slopes. I have no complaints about this snowfield. The cross-country ability is excellent, the engine is powerful.
  • I'm new to this and this is my first purchase. Friends persuaded me to buy this particular model, I liked it, it’s only fast for me for now. And I'm very pleased with the purchase.
  • I am a big extreme sports enthusiast, for me safety comes first. I often go out to drive with friends. And I give great preference to this particular model.

Engine

The Polaris RMK 800 snowmobile is equipped with a Liberty brand power unit. This engine has two cylinders, the total displacement of which is 795 cubic meters. The diameter of each cylinder is 85 mm. The piston stroke is 70 mm. The rated output power is 154 horsepower.

The liquid cooling system with bypass allows the machine to be operated at high temperatures. The average fuel consumption for every hundred kilometers is about 16-17 liters. The vehicle is started using an electric starter.

Four-stroke engine with twin cylinders

The four-stroke engine with twin cylinders, electronic multipoint fuel injection and liquid cooling (4-stroke EFI, liquid-cooled twin) has 50 hp. Engine braking and hill descent control are standard, as is an automatic folding cargo box.

When it comes to hauling gear or supplies, the 2014 Sportsman Big Boss 6x6 800 EFI is exceptionally comfortable.

This vehicle has a payload capacity of 490 kg plus can tow up to 680 kg. An extensive list of accessories awaits so customers can turn their Sportsmans into customized vehicles.

In the saddle of this Polaris ATV you can feel confident in the middle of the Siberian taiga or the Amazon jungle, especially in the forests near Moscow. Not so long ago, “Big Boss” received a new chassis, a new engine, and now the six-wheeled all-terrain vehicle is not afraid of the most difficult off-road conditions.

AT THE FIRST presentation of the “Sportsman 800 6×6 Big Boss” in Minneapolis, USA, it was not possible to really test it. Then, about a year ago, we were, as they say, given a ride on an all-terrain vehicle. But it still didn't look weak. Imagine a huge pile of stones, each the size of a horse's head - a six-wheeler climbed onto it and went down as calmly as if he had climbed a slide for the little ones in kindergarten. Then they attached the front blade to it, and we moved a decent mountain of sawdust back and forth. Towards the end, they loaded bags of cement with a total weight of 500 kg into the back, and I took them for a ride over that pile of cobblestones again. All! At this point the presentation ended, and we went to drink coffee.

Meanwhile, the new “Big Boss” is clearly aiming to become a top seller. And, of course, I did not miss the opportunity to get to know him better in Russia. For our test, an ATV was specially delivered to the Brandt motorcycle dealership in St. Petersburg.

But there is a configuration designed for performing various jumps and the like, that is, for extreme driving. In this case, the snowmobile is equipped with a powerful front suspension, which does not have a stabilizer. This suspension allows you to adjust the base of the skis, which allows you to prepare the machine for certain operating conditions. There are also Walker Evans® adjustable shock absorbers. The caterpillar belt has lugs with increased rigidity, thanks to which the machine can be used not only on snow surfaces, but also on ice. All this together gives the snowmobile quite high strength, stability and easy control in various situations.

The second modification, also known as Polaris 800 PRO-RMK 155, is a version exclusively designed for extreme operating conditions. Among its class, this model occupies a leading position; this mountain device will allow you to get an unforgettable experience from traveling along the most difficult routes.

As for the snowmobile's handling, the Polaris 800 PRO-RMK 155 is quite simple and manageable. The equipment is able to maintain balance even when taking very steep turns. By its structure, this modified version has high reliability of most parts and assemblies. The manufacturer managed to significantly lighten the model without losing strength and rigidity. As in the previous modification, this one has a 795 cc power plant, which allows you to overcome various obstacles that arise when traveling long distances. The model can be used both in the mountains and on ice.

Polaris 800 Switchback PRO - R

If the Indy is a simplified version of a sports short-track machine, then the Switchback PRO - R is not just a well-equipped snowmobile, but one of the most sophisticated crossovers on the market. Here all the bells and whistles are presented in the best possible way: shock absorbers with expansion tanks, a high steering wheel on a spacer with curved ends, lever protection, a digital dashboard, colorful stickers. But the most remarkable and attractive thing is the rear suspension. Here the Rush style is already fully present. There are birdcage tubes and a Walker Evans shock that's easy to reach if you need to do any tuning. The front suspension is also of a high level and also adjustable. So the Switchback can drive on roads of varying degrees of roughness very quickly.

A large, heavy track has virtually no effect on the performance of the suspension. The clever lever system absorbs shocks perfectly. If you need to jump onto some surface made of ice or petrified clay, the Switchback is great. He takes the blows noticeably, but not so hard that they cause discomfort. And by playing with shock absorber clickers, you can achieve more correct response in specific situations, give more comfort while traveling or damping on a hard road. Despite the higher price, it does not have the lightness that Indy is distinguished by. It handles well, goes where it is told, but the driver must make an effort. This is quite natural, given that it has a longer track, due to this the overall weight is greater, as well as unsprung.

But in virgin lands, a long track is a fabulous gift. With it, you no longer need to think through every line and be afraid three times before stopping whether you will be able to go later. In snowdrifts, the crossover feels very confident and demonstrates almost mountain crossability. And even some mountain techniques work on it. For example, turns on one ski are very easy for him. The main thing is to bend over, because the track is relatively wide and is designed for a stable position in rolled turns, and then you ride freely in an arc. The engine is the same 800 cm3 second generation as in Indy. It’s impossible to say anything new about it in relation to the Switchback; the snowmobile accelerates just as sharply and quickly, maybe the body will give way on a kilometer straight due to the greater weight, but this is not a difference to worry about.

Polaris Switchback is the optimal Russian snowmobile for active riding. We don’t have many high-quality groomed trails where you can drive short-track vehicles with pleasure; one way or another you have to get out onto virgin soil. Where the crossover can drive confidently, especially with the appropriate driver skills. Of course, in Kamchatka with a five-meter “powder” it will not save the situation, but in the central regions with mixed routes it will be very useful. The PRO - R package is one of the richest, so you don’t even need tuning. At the same time, the price in Polaris showrooms is very humane. So the current price promotion for the 2014 model is a good chance to buy a good snowmobile for pre-crisis money.

Polaris 800 Indy SP

Indy is a budget destination. Initially, the snowmobile was conceived as a simple retro-style option for older snowmobilers who remember the distant days of the old Indy and who now have nowhere to rush. But over time, it turned out that the concept of a light, attractive and inexpensive snowmobile needed some adjustment. Because its excellent handling is sorely lacking in a powerful engine. Therefore, the price tag was sacrificed a little to radically improve the dynamics and they installed a top-end 800 cc two-stroke on Indy. As a result, today for half a million rubles you can get a fast and thoroughbred snowmobile that will last for many years of riding.

The most interesting thing while driving was finding the catch. Well, equipment can’t cost so much less than everything else and still drive the same. The Indy SP has a modest appearance, with model and manufacturer names and simple geometric shapes in different colors. The Americans initially declared this kind of minimalism. Their concept is the simplest appearance without the slightest extra costs. At one time, they carried out more radical experiments, producing snowmobiles without stickers at all, but here they still moved away from this. The stickers don't affect the driving performance, but the suspension does. Expensive “shorty” ones are made on the Rush chassis with a characteristic lever system at the rear, while the Indy has a traditional system without any special frills. However, it copes well with lumpy groomed trails that don't have too much snow on them.

The earthen hummocks hardened by the cold do not penetrate the suspension, although they can be felt. If you are aiming at big sports, it makes sense to take Rush, which is already much more expensive. But for driving on regular roads, the Indy chassis is more than enough. Its very important feature is low weight. The snowmobile is so easy to control that you don’t have to put any effort into it at all. It seems that even a child can handle it. But if you suddenly want to hurry up, Indy fires like a cannon. For that we have to thank the engine. It is installed on top sports snowmobiles and has a power of around 150 horsepower. New snowmobiles are now equipped with a newer version, but the old one also perfectly satisfies the need for fast driving. It’s hard to call the 800 Indy SP budget. It has simple looks and ergonomics, but is a very fast and easy to ride sled. The scope of application is mainly limited to compacted tracks; on virgin soil with a short track you need to get out very carefully. But this track length is one of the main links in the chain of excellent handling that Indy is so loved for.

Not knowing the ford..

I REMEMBERED this saying when I returned from the ice of the Moscow River back to the earth’s surface. Or he might not return. However - first things first...

In pursuit of a spectacular photo, the photographer and I descended onto the treacherous spring ice. At first glance, it was quite durable. And Alexey Barashkov asked me to spin around in front of the camera. For greater effect, I turned off all-wheel drive and switched to rear-wheel drive again. Turning the steering wheel, I launch the “Sportsman” like a fan through the snow. The four-wheeler twisted into it like a corkscrew into a traffic jam. First, ice porridge flew out from under the frantically rotating rear wheels, then jets of water soared up, and the stern of the Polaris plunged into an ice hole, which the all-terrain vehicle itself “gnawed” with its wheels. The feeling is not pleasant. I frantically press the yellow button on the steering wheel, turning on the “4x4” mode. The “Sportsman”, slowly going under the water, climbs out with its front wheels onto the hard ice, I jump off the saddle, continuing to press the gas trigger all the way, and the all-terrain vehicle, like a horse that has dropped an unbearable load, literally jumps out of the water. And then the sharp grinding sound of the steel protection running along the entire belly of the car against the edge of broken ice seemed like a magical sound to me...

The photographer and I could only praise the heavens and the Polaris engineers who developed the so-called “true all-wheel drive.” Its essence is that all four wheels always rotate equally, regardless of the degree of slippage (here it is appropriate to draw an analogy with an SUV in which the center, rear and even front differentials are locked). While most ATVs use a limited-slip front differential, the Polaris does without one at all. Therefore, unlike many other all-terrain vehicles, engine energy is not lost through slipping wheels: each of them always receives the required 25% of engine power. And it’s good that it’s fuel-injected: when you press the accelerator sharply, the engine doesn’t even “choke,” but instantly and evenly picks up speed.

Polaris 800 for extreme riding

The Polaris brand took care of a lot, so it released a special configuration with the ability to ride an extreme snowmobile. In particular, it can withstand jumps from considerable heights. This was achieved thanks to the improved front suspension, which now does not have a stabilizer. If you want to seriously test your snowmobile in extreme riding, adjust the ski base for maximum performance. Of course, the shock absorbers are adjustable. The model described above also received lugs and high rigidity for better grip. All the described characteristics make the snowmobile one of the most rigid and stable, so the price is quite justified.

Models

Polaris Sportsman XP 1000

For those who want the most and a little more, the most powerful production ATV of all time. It is notable primarily for its two-cylinder inline ProStar 1000 engine producing 90 horsepower. This is a lot even for a Side-by-Side, but for a much lighter ATV it may seem excessive. But the typical American approach of “there is never too much power” works. Especially if you have to climb steep slopes, carry heavy loads, drive through steppes and deserts.

Several modifications are available based on the Sportsman XP 1000. HighLifter is a mud machine with huge wheels, high air intakes, and a power body kit. Hunt Edition is an ATV for hunters in camouflage plastic with protection from branches, luggage rack extensions, a rack and a gun case. The racing Sportsman XP 1000 S is stable in corners and on terrain thanks to a wide 140 cm track. The shock absorbers are fully adjustable, the frame, suspension and drive parts are reinforced.

Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 is tough and fast

Polaris Sportsman 850

The Sportsman 850 has slightly less power, at 78 horsepower. But this is more than enough for both fast driving and for carrying heavy loads. It is 13 kilograms lighter than the XP version and several hundred thousand rubles cheaper. Otherwise, the models are very similar, almost identical. The Sportsman 850 Premium differs from the base model in its automotive-style paint, aluminum wheels, fender flares and other details.

Polaris Sportsman 570

The best sellers are not powerful and technologically advanced ones, but inexpensive and economical ATVs. Such as the Sportsman 570. The single-cylinder engine with double overhead camshafts produces 44 horsepower. Its advantages are reliability, efficiency, and smooth running. The Polaris Sportsman 570 ATV is 44 kilograms lighter than the Sportsman XP 1000 model and is about one and a half times cheaper. This is the optimal configuration for work and not too fast recreational driving. By the standards of a budget model, the Sportsman 570 is well equipped. It is equipped with six-layer anti-puncture tires, sealed suspension bushings, powerful luggage racks, and a port for fast battery charging. It has even more special equipment than older models: there are machines for hunting, work, and trails.

The Sportsman 570 X2 is a convertible ATV with a large dump body. With a slight movement of the hand, it turns from a single-seater to a double-seater and vice versa. Sportsman 570 6×6 is an all-wheel drive six-wheeled vehicle with increased cross-country ability and load capacity, suitable for driving through swamps, snowdrifts, and sand.

The Sportsman 570 has a little brother, the Sportsman 450. It has 11 less horsepower and only two trim levels, with and without electric power steering. Otherwise the ATVs are identical.

Polaris Sportsman Touring

On the Sportsman Touring XP 1000, Sportsman Touring 850 and Sportsman Touring 570 two-seat touring models, the passenger feels even better than the driver. He sits in a soft high chair with arms and a high back. Touring ATVs are longer and heavier than single-seater ones, which means they are more stable and stable. But because of this, they don't handle as sharply and accelerate a little slower. However, when driving with a passenger, such additional safety is rather an advantage.

On touring models, the passenger is more comfortable than the driver

Polaris Sportsman 110

A smaller copy of the large Sportsman for children from 10 years old. Rear-wheel drive, four-stroke engine, luggage racks can withstand loads of up to 20 kilograms. For safe, gradual learning, a maximum speed limiter can be adjusted. The starter kit includes a high-mounted pennant, a children's helmet, and an educational DVD.
