850 cc, 165 hp and two bars: BRP snowmobile music in Western Siberia

The BRP Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R is a snowmobile that is suitable for use in any conditions. The Ski-Doo MXZ 800 series has been on the market for quite some time. The Canadian brand BRP, which is responsible for its development, regularly offers consumers new models with improved characteristics. One of the most popular modifications of the series is the Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R snowmobile (year of appearance: 2011), which combines high speed characteristics and efficiency.

The snowmobile is based on the REV-XS platform. The aluminum track tunnel and pyramidal frame with a rigid structure allow the driver to position himself in the center of mass, which has a positive effect on the handling of the vehicle. The Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R has one of the lightest designs of any product in the brand. The single seat allows the body to move freely over a considerable distance, which improves maneuverability and dynamics.

The chassis of the model can withstand any load perfectly. The front suspension is based on double A-arms, complemented by HPG Plus R gas shock absorbers. An optional quick-release anti-roll bar link is available, which can be installed and removed without additional tools. This technology allows you to quickly change the “tactics” of movement, taking into account specific movement conditions.

At the rear, the new rMotion suspension is fully adjustable with HPG Plus/KYB Pro 36 shocks and can be adjusted in just a few minutes without the need for special tools. Brand representatives claim that the rMotion suspension has the greatest travel among analogues. During its development, priority was given to a comfortable ride on uneven surfaces and reliability when jumping. On heavy terrain, the suspension does not break through, and on hard-packed roads it behaves very softly.

The BRP Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R uses a dedicated PowderMax mountain track. Similar elements are installed on Summit mountain snowmobiles. Due to this, the device seriously improves its cross-country ability.

The powerful engine provides the necessary traction to tackle the most challenging tasks. The device gains high speed in a few minutes. The racing braking system allows you not to be afraid of the movement process, making it as safe as possible.

The BRP Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R stands out from other snowmobiles with its stylish design. An interesting combination of colors and an original body make us pay special attention to it.

The basic package of the model includes:

  • straight aluminum handlebar with J-handles;
  • fuel level indicator;
  • electric starter;
  • narrowed REV-XP X seat with luggage compartment;
  • windshield (size – 152 mm);
  • speedometer;
  • multifunctional digital information center;
  • heated handles;
  • tachometer.

Options include rear-view mirrors, an additional seat, a backrest and a tow bar.

The BRP Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R is a real beast that can wade through large snowdrifts, jump from steep banks onto ice, move over rough terrain and maneuver through the forest. This snowmobile is a dream come true for any consumer.

2013 Ski-Doo Renegade X 1200 Review

Ski-Doo upgrades 4-stroke Renegade with rMotion suspension

Let's be honest: if we were to choose a model from the Renegade family, we would probably choose the option with the 800 cc 2-stroke E-TEC engine. It has decent power reserves and the latest XS sports chassis with rounded edges for easy off-road driving. But for everyday versatility, it's hard to beat the Rotax 4-stroke Renegade X 1200. How can you not love an engine with a consumption of almost 11.7 liters per 100 kilometers and incredibly smooth operation at low and medium speeds?

The 2013 Ski-Doo Renegade X is the king of long-track 4-stroke models. The 3-cylinder engine with a volume of 1170.7 cubic centimeters produces a claimed 130 horsepower. The engine is made by Rotax, a longtime partner and subsidiary of Ski-Doo, and is one of the best all-around engines in the entire snowmobile lineup. There is more than enough torque for both powerful and quick cornering and a smooth ride on well-packed roads. The engine starts smoothly at 2500 rpm and continues to operate smoothly at mid-range. The engine easily reaches its maximum 7800 rpm.

The Renegade 1200's 4-stroke engine delivers a smooth ride on paved roads, but still has enough power for jumping and trail running.

Anyone who has driven a 2012 or earlier 4-TEC will definitely notice the new model's improved transmission. Ski-Doo has abandoned the traditional clutch design for 2-stroke models in favor of the eDrive2 system, a beefed-up version of the original eDrive design found on the 600 ACE 4-stroke sleds. In 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, energy pulsates completely differently, torque is also very different, so it would be naive to think that a 2-stroke clutch system will suit a 4-stroke engine configuration. Yes, this option will work, but it can be done better, which is what was done.

Today's 4-stroke transmissions are not nearly as hopeless. On the contrary, it's amazing how far modern efficient 4-stroke snowmobiles have come compared to the first attempts to use 4-stroke engines. Remember the Polaris Frontier with its ATV-specific system? Or Arctic Cat Yellowstone Special? These were extremely smooth sleds with reduced power. Arctic Cat and Yamaha make gorgeous, smooth-riding 4-stroke machines. Previous Ski-Doo 4-TEC configurations were good, but eDrive is a significant step up in quality and performance.

With a wide 16-inch Ripsaw track that is 137 inches long, the Renegade X 1200 moves confidently through untouched snow.

The original eDrive system was created with an eye on BRP's Can-Am ATVs. The basic eDrive is enough for a standard 60-horsepower engine, but a 3-cylinder engine with 130 horsepower is no longer capable of it. Looking at the design of the eDrive2, it is immediately clear that Rotax designers have strengthened it significantly. Engagement and acceleration to mid-range speeds are much smoother. The gear shift is also very smooth. You especially begin to appreciate the new system during sharp transitions from hard snow to a compacted path or large snowdrifts. The revs are kept in the desired range during transitions from one type of snow to another.

The XR chassis has space for luggage. You can also use the Ski-Doo LinQ system to carry more fuel or tools.

But of course, you need to understand that the Renegade X 1200 4-TEC and 2-stroke snowmobiles are completely different things. The 2-stroke models are built on the new XS chassis, while the 1200 model retains the larger XR chassis, designed to accommodate the wider and heavier 3-cylinder 4-stroke engine. The 800cc 2-stroke Renegade is about 18 kilograms lighter. But this is unlikely to be so important for buyers of the extended 4-stroke Renegade 1200. Such drivers need the ability to aggressively drive on groomed trails, while often driving out into loose, unpacked snow. The XR platform snowmobile is ideal for this. It drives very smoothly and quietly, but at the same time the exhaust sound lets those around you know that this is still a very sports car.

But what buyers will love most about the 2013 Ski-Doo Renegade X 1200 is what's under the seat. For the 2013 model year, Ski-Doo corrected their mistake and equipped the Renegade series with rMotion suspension. Members of the company's board admitted that they did not calculate the demand for the new suspension system last season, equipping only the sports MXZ with it. rMotion is now standard on the Renegade, and an optional Quick Adjust system with rear footpeg-mounted controls is available. Are those noticeable Quick Adjusts worth $400? Yes, if you want to show off to your friends. If you don't care too much about ego, you can save that money and buy other accessories, such as the optional LinQ system, which allows you to carry more fuel or tools. In fact, once you've customized rMotion to your liking, you won't need to tweak any more knobs. Well, if only to show off in front of your friends with a Polaris ProRide Rush or Switchback!

The rMotion suspension can be purchased with or without footpeg-mounted adjusters.

We are all, of course, the most experienced and best drivers, and we know that it is better to set the suspension harder. But is this really so? rMotion is tuned softer, which is best suited for almost all drivers. Remember that the X version is equipped with premium shock absorbers, which most owners will adjust to a softer setting to maximize shock travel. At the front, the double wishbone suspension features HPG Plus R shock absorbers with rebound adjustment. The rMotion sliding rear suspension features a KYB Pro 36 rear shock with two available compression settings. The central shock absorber is a high-pressure gas HPG Plus in an aluminum housing. The result is an easily adjustable racing suspension that can handle anything you throw at it.

The Ski-Doo Renegade X 1200 features premium HPG Plus R shocks that control 9 inches of suspension travel.

In our test drive, the 2013 Ski-Doo Renegade X 1200 proved its versatility. As expected, the snowmobile travels well and very smoothly on groomed trails. But the model surprised us with its agility in deep, loose snow outside of groomed routes. The Ripsaw's 137-inch, 17-inch-wide track allows the 237-pound sled to romp through open grassland without much trouble. This is where the big track and engine torque reach their full potential.

The introduction of rMotion suspension should certainly attract buyers to this Ski-Doo 4-stroke. This is a quiet, powerful and smooth snowmobile that can provide many enjoyable days on the snow. And if that's not enough, there's always the 800cc E-TEC version!

Owner reviews

  • Ali1687: I bought a Renegade 800 3 years ago. The impressions from its use are twofold. After 140 km the spark plug burned out. I dealt with this problem quite quickly. However, after 100 km, a friend began to hear a noise during a slow start, then a cracking sound began to be heard under the seat. During acceleration, extraneous sounds disappear. The service center said that the equipment just needs to be warmed up. I put it in the garage, but the crackling and noise remained. As long as I drive like this, it doesn’t affect the functionality in any way. In terms of speed characteristics, the 800th Renegade is very good, as well as in terms of efficiency (consumption does not exceed 20 liters under any operating conditions and loads).
  • Mikhail, Vladivostok: Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade 800R, as it turned out, is not the best model of the Canadian brand. I owned it for 2 years. Over 500 km of travel, the spark plugs had to be changed 2 times. The device works very unevenly. Sometimes the speed suddenly drops, the tachometer drops almost to zero, but the engine does not stall. Moreover, this happens even on warmed-up equipment, when it has already traveled several kilometers. When you start, you hear strange clicks from your left leg. At high speeds there is quite a lot of vibration. I didn't really like Snowball. After having to change the belt at the end of the second year, I sold it.
  • Anton, Saransk: Gad 800 from a friend, he bought it 3-4 years ago. We live nearby, so we took it for a ride several times. The technology is not bad in principle, but very expensive. I drove it through the forest and across the field. Consumption was approximately 14 liters per hundred. Once I ran into a snag that was hiding in the snow. Snezhik survived such a collision, dented his ski a little, but there was no damage. I liked the controls of the Gad 800. The steering wheel moves easily, the technology listens to the driver, and acceleration is generally excellent. A friend says there have been no serious breakdowns so far, and he is happy with the equipment.
  • Vitaly_1985: I've been riding the MXZ Renegade 800R since 2013. Today the mileage is 2500 km. I'm happy with the snowmobile. The device carries as much as is loaded on it. It goes smoothly, without failures. At the same time, it is light and dynamic, and the consumption is 13-15 l/100 km. It has all the options for driving in winter: heated handles, a powerful battery, rear-view mirrors. I did minimal snowballing. The problem only happened once. When I put the vehicle in reverse, the headlights suddenly stopped working. The reason for this turned out to be a blown fuse. I bought a new one, installed it, cleaned the block itself, the motor stopped working. In the end I had to remove the fuse, so that's how I drive for now. Otherwise the snowball is perfect.

Off-Road Tourer Ski-Doo Expedition TUV V-800

Snowmobiles of the Expedition family occupy an intermediate position in the brand line between utilitarian “working” and touring models and successfully combine the best features of both classes. Providing, in particular, due to the long track, the cross-country ability of “workhorses”, they, at the same time, are comfortable and equipped at the level of the best “tourists”.

The Expedition TUV V-800 is built on the proven YETI chassis, which features single wishbone and curved trailing arm suspension at the front and SUV-style suspension at the rear. The front shock absorbers are hydraulic, the rear shock absorbers are gas-filled. This chassis provides the snowmobile with good stability and controllability both off-road and on specially prepared trails.

When you need to tow heavy loads or tackle long climbs with a passenger in the back seat, the 800cc Rotax's already excellent towing performance can be improved by downshifting the transmission. The equipment of the new Expedition will provide riders with comfort even on the longest journey: there is a modular seat that allows you to easily change the layout of the snowmobile from two to single, and a multifunctional instrument panel, and heated grips.

"Hard worker" Lynx Yeti Pro V-800

In conditions where power and traction are crucial, when overcoming virgin snow is not entertainment or relaxation, but a severe necessity, there are few equals to this well-deserved “hard worker” from the Yeti family.

Yeti Pro is equipped with a 60 cm wide track. Such wide-track models, according to BRP experts, are not produced by any of its competitors. Such a wide track has a length of 396 cm, which, in combination with wide skis, provides the snowmobile with unprecedented maneuverability.

The design of the body and suspension of the snowmobile is also subject to the solution of the same problem (ensuring cross-country ability). The bottom of the Yeti Pro has the shape of a boat, and there are no protruding parts in the front suspension (it is made on the basis of gas-filled shock absorber struts), which makes it easy to cut through snowdrifts of any depth and not be afraid of obstacles hidden under the snow cover. Well, the Yeti Pro telescopic suspension has long been recognized by experts as “indestructible”.

In the basic configuration, the snowmobile is a two-seater model, but by removing the rear seat, it can be made into a single-seater with a huge trunk in the back.

Reviews

  • Georgy, Saratov. The car was purchased two years ago on the secondary market, in good condition. Despite the supported version, the snowmobile looks and behaves like new. Apparently it was really rarely used. Gasoline consumption is about 15-17 liters per 100 km. Can be filled with cheap 92-grade fuel. The car handles well and behaves predictably in corners. In general, it is unpretentious in maintenance and quite fast, despite only 60 horses under the hood. Since 2021 I have been using it for 8-9 months a year. The device confidently tows a loaded sled.
  • Nikolay, Belgorod. Ease of control and low cost are the main advantages for which I purchased the BRP Skido Scandic SVT snowmobile. The car is inexpensive, and at the same time has good acceleration and traction characteristics. It is clear that this snowmobile is in many ways inferior to older BRP models, for example in terms of power. Gasoline consumption is at the level of 14 liters, so you can cover significant distances without refueling. In terms of cross-country ability, the car was not a success, as it quickly sits on its belly in deep snow. But along the well-trodden road, the device reveals itself to its full potential. I don’t plan to change the snowmobile yet, as it has an excellent ratio of quality, price and handling. So what if I have to buy original components, but I have confidence that the Scandic will serve me as long as possible.
  • Igor, Pyatigorsk. My snowmobile will soon be three years old. This is my first such device. I decided to take a car from a well-known brand so that later there would be no problems with reliability. And I even spat on the weak engine, in which I was later disappointed. The snowmobile does not carry a heavy load at all; it drives lazily. There is no feeling of dynamics at all, and the engine doesn’t even run at all its 60 horsepower, but as if it were 30 horses, no more. The device slowly picks up speed, and at the same time consumes up to 20 liters per 100 km/h - this is at high speeds. During the first three seasons there were no breakdowns, but then some interruptions began with the electric starter, and I had to start it manually. The plastic skis cracked when I accidentally hit a big rock. The rear carriage is quite weak. In general, if you have to repair something, it is advisable to immediately contact a service center, since a snowmobile is very labor-intensive to maintain. It does not inspire any confidence, including due to expensive service repairs. For example, replacing just one windshield on Scandic costs 35 thousand rubles.
  • Maxim, Leningrad region. The snowmobile came in handy for fishing and hunting needs. The device was recommended to me by friends who are also keen on hunting. I've been using it for two months. The used car so far satisfies all my needs, no matter where I am. The maximum speed is 80 km/h – that’s enough for me. The suspension is impenetrable, you don’t have to worry about overcoming various obstacles, deep snowdrifts, etc. I will note the comfortable seating position and the ability to raise the seat and steering wheel so that you can ride while standing. Due to the soft suspension, the snowmobile sometimes seems clumsy and unable to maneuver quickly. But the car smooths out all the bumps and allows you to move quietly and comfortably through the forest.
