Ural Wolf - a real Russian bike

Russian motorcyclesUral motorcycles

The Ural Wolf motorcycle can be called special even because members of the well-known Night Wolves motorcycle club participated in its development.

“Wolf” belongs to the “Cruiser” class and in fact is the first chopper that was created on the territory of the Russian Federation .

The motorcycle has obvious external features of its Japanese and American counterparts of the 50s.

Features and Design

The characteristic features of Russian units are almost completely removed from this model. The bike has a “spread out” shape due to the long base.

The distance between the front and rear axle is 1690 mm.

Given its weight, the motorcycle is set low, which increases its maneuverability parameters.

You can also mention the high-quality steering system, which uses Italian bearings with tapered angular contact rollers.

Thanks to its design, the “Wolf” is suitable not only for highways, but also for comfortable movement around the city.

External parameters of the bike: length – 2.53 m; width – 0.85 m, height – 1.3 m.

The weight of the “naked” motorcycle is 249 kg. In comparison with other motorcycles in the post-Soviet space, the Ural Wolf does not differ much in external characteristics from Western choppers.

There is an abundance of chrome, leather, and a very solid, brutal appearance .

A motorcycle worthy of your attention is the Honda Hornet 600, which has excellent characteristics.

Dedicate a weekend to riding through the forest, doing housework or even participating in races - with this motorcycle from Honda, it is more than possible.

It just so happened that I unexpectedly bought a Wolf. I am the fourth owner, not a Wolves fan, but I couldn’t pass up such an offer. I sold my car and bought a motorcycle. By the way, this is exactly what the first owner did back in 2003. Then Tyson drove the device for a long time and successfully, until it was sold last year. I never aspired to the Wolf, there were options before to buy, for example, the same 2001 year that Kostya Korchagin is now driving. I paid tribute to the model, recognized its beauty and charisma, but this particular device caught my attention. I’m already starting to think that, given the right scenario, he could be the only loner in the garage. The traffic jams are worse than the Retiree, but in general it’s normal. And I’m preparing a removable trunk for long-distance travelers. If you still think about the possibility of roaming...))) This Wolf was hooked. And he came to me. After all, I didn’t drive a single meter on it until I paid the money in full. I won’t say that I bought it blindly, no. The recovery was underway before my eyes. And, partly, through our workshop. And the money could be spent in different ways. For example, Jack is now on the SV750, and in terms of coins he got it “key to key”. But I'm very pleased with the device! The bike was prepared by Jack, the third owner, for which many thanks to him! - boring for "autotechnology" pistons 79 mm with an increased compression ratio (mileage 500 km) - milling of heads and valve covers - new gaskets everywhere - valves are ground in, compression 11 on both pots - replacement of all bearings and seals in the box - replacement of all in the gearbox bearings and seals, nothing leaks anywhere - new gel battery - brand new keihin cvk32 carburetors (bought from an official IMZ dealer), carburetors are tuned, synchronized by the device - New Saruman ignition - new tires (mileage 100 km) - new mufflers with flutes (from the “demons of calm”) - this season all the seats are made of genuine leather - the trim on the tank and the handles are made of the same leather, everything is sewn by hand. - new rear brake cylinder brembo from Ducati 696, rear brakes are excellent - all the wiring has been shaken up, everything that should light up lights up. — this year replacing all oils and filters — replacing spark plugs with NGK ones — new high-voltage silicone wires

I rode around and collected my impressions. First and foremost, I am happy as an elephant with the purchase of this motorcycle! I just like him! This is a great generator of positive emotions! I’ll note right away that it’s not that there are any shortcomings, but some features have emerged. I don't like high steering wheels. I always try to ride low. If you're tall, the motorcycle feels worse, and your hands get more numb. When actively accelerating, you grab onto it instead of just putting your hands on the grips. It’s just that when driving, the hands become a little more tense, since the arms are suspended. But I won’t change the steering wheel on this motorcycle to a low one; the original one suits the style better. My ass has not yet learned to negotiate with the luxurious leather saddle of the top. Whether it’s a thin home-made one on the Dnieper, or a rubber frog on Otstavnik, not to mention the luxurious solid sofas of Kvaka and 121, all these seats are more comfortable for me than Volkov’s. In the city when traveling for half an hour without any comments. But on the highway there is still some discomfort. Takeaways are completely useless for me. When you’ve been riding in a classic seat for 30 years, it’s uncomfortable to sit “in a gynecological chair,” it hits your ass in the pits, and you can’t feel the motorcycle at all! But if they stand, then let them be. They will come in handy on long distance trips to stretch your legs. Although simple arcs can cope with this perfectly well. I assume that with the back of the driver’s seat, both stems and a horned steering wheel will be in theme. But where are our roads that are so impressive to drive? I've been thinking a lot about the windbreaker. Small so as not to spoil the appearance, but sufficient. In an open helmet, the track is tense, the oncoming traffic is splashing your head. Cork penetration is worse than that of the Retired, but not critical, you can ride. It's just that motorcycle handles like a bicycle. The joint came out. Jack got new wheels from a motorcycle tire shop. He brought the tires there without new tubes, and the old rear one was all in patches. So these unfortunate masters managed to install a bicycle camera in 130\90R16! I have a Minsk one in my garage, so it’s noticeably larger than the miracle that I pulled out of the cylinder! And it was like this. I drove it to Tolyatti and already at ten o’clock in the evening in Samara I felt that the rear wagged and stopped. The balloon deflates before our eyes. I don’t see the nail and I can hear it poisoning from the inside. I tried to pump up the taxi driver's tire, but it was useless. I decided to push to the garage, fortunately from the hill, down. The tire went flat at the highest point in Samara, on the Moskovskoe highway, at the intersection with Novo-Vokzalnaya. That's it! What is there to Bezymyanka! It turned out to be almost an hour and a half long and, as measurements in Yandex maps later showed, eight and a half kilometers long. A wolf with a lowered rear, to put it mildly, is a bit heavy to push! I realized that everything was fine with the engine, started up and then walked alongside, helping the top not to fall and not giving free rein to its attempts to accelerate sharply. That's all with negativity and peculiarities, the rest is joy. The motorcycle is crashing! Provokes! Even with an abundance of power, you start to play pranks in the city, and this is not good. On the highway there is also confident acceleration to cruising speed and from cruising to maximum. The engine is still being run-in, so I don’t give it full throttle, but I accidentally reached 140 km/h several times, having been a little late releasing the gas when overtaking. I haven’t checked it with the tachometer yet, but I still have the feeling of a well-chosen row in the gearbox. The first is at the start and in standing traffic jams, the second is for creeping traffic jams, the third is to get to the fourth, and the fourth is both in the city and on the highway. But when, out of curiosity, I made calculations of the dependence of engine speed on speed, then my satisfaction diminished! It seems that at 100 km/h the engine turns out to 4,000 rpm in 4th gear. A lot of. Redundant. You need to check with the instruments, hooking up the tachometer and GPS speedometer. And then draw conclusions. It is possible that I will put a tenth park in the bridge, fortunately it is there. In the meantime, these are the observations. It is clear that 5 gears are better than 4. But. The start is vigorous. In the city I drive in fourth, sometimes sticking into third for confidence in acceleration, so that the engine does not suffer from low revs. I pass the traffic jam first or second. On the Birr-Byr highway, carefully at 100-110-120 km/h. The throttles are slightly open. Need to speed up? Turn the handle and go! 140 is immediately on the speedometer and wants to go further, but I don’t allow it. More running in. The hardest thing is to force yourself to go your usual 100-110. A careless movement of the right hand on the Wolf with the same birr-birr already goes 120-130-140. I'm resetting again. Acceleration reserve in any situation. Drive off the asphalt carefully. The front fender urgently needs a mudguard, otherwise the engine will be dirty in any puddle. The motorcycle looks nice. And, importantly, it’s the right size for me. There is no feeling of a circus bear on a motorcycle. Many people think the rear suspension is stiff. But under my weight just right. The wolf cub and I are getting used to each other. Blunts come out and are removed. Almost for the first time in my life I didn’t return to the base under my own power, but arrived in a truck. First things first. I moved the front turn signals, it’s more convenient for me.

And temporarily occupied the trunk with a trunk. Riding without a tool is uncomfortable, primarily psychologically.

Haven’t you talked about the bike tube in the rear wheel yet? I looked at the Voskhod camera, it is, of course, more interesting, but it also inflates a lot, pretending to be a ball. Kostya Korchagin fitted me with a 16″ spare tire camera, it fits like a stock one, but in the future, I think it’s possible to install a 15″ one. And the Voskhodovskaya one is good for use on the road, since it takes up little space. Last weekend I went to Pribrezhny to a camp site, so the Rovers celebrated their birthday. Congratulate and see people.

There was a traffic jam leaving Samara all the way to Tsarev Kurgan. No driving pleasure. But then... The empty track is already difficult to limit the speed of the motorcycle, to remember that the run-in has not yet been completed. In just one place I allowed myself to turn the throttle when the photographer from the next car started, just once! And the speedometer readings change from 65 to 90! And the motorcycle is ready to go further! But we’ll drive a hundred a little later.

Convenient signs from the organizers, it’s impossible to get lost!

The fest is very emotional, next year we will definitely go there for all three days. There were very few Urals, but the familiar carriage was visible from afar.

And here is his owner, Leonid Tyson!

Towards evening I got ready to go home. Kamrad and I had fun driving along a winding forest asphalt path, passed Pribrezhny, got carried away by accelerating up the hill, anticipating further rides, we revved the engines to the din, forgetting about running in... And then Voyage sharply goes forward, And the Wolf silently freezes on the side of the road. First thought, I twisted it... Damn! The cut-off is not sewn... I roll into the side pocket and begin to deal with what happened. I saw melted fuses and burnt wires and felt a sense of relief. Electrics. Not a motor! Bullshit!

There is no light, the starter does not turn, the lights do not light up. Having found a piece of stranded wire on the side, I make a temporary fuse. He bursts into flames, burned by a strong current. Overly strong. We need to look at the chains. We remove the tank with the Tatar. Hmmm... The wiring is divided into two parts. Neatly laid factory made of normal wires. And the rest. Trash... Wires on bends without protection... Masking tape... Sad! In May, Jack approached me with a question about doing electrical work. I couldn’t do it right away, I was busy moving the workshop, and then they said that all the problems with the wiring had been fixed. But I didn’t check after the purchase... But these “mines” would definitely pop up, albeit later. In the meantime, the first one worked. In pursuit of “neatness,” the high-voltage coil was driven under the cover on the motor, secured with a pair of screws, and the wires suitable for it were pressed to the crankcase with the coil. Then the temperature and vibrations did their job, the insulation was frayed, the circuit received a short circuit along the control wire and the coil went out of order. Burnt out, in Russian speaking.

Saturday evening in a quiet village. Auto parts stores are closed. We were able to find electrical tape, fuses and even a switch from the guys standing next to the hangar. It was possible to continue the search for the coil, it was possible to look for a friendly garage in Pribrezhny... But a “thief” who came by instantly suggested a solution! The man was returning to Samara, his cargo was passing, and therefore the price tag was humane, I was not capricious, although Keramika, not Bezymyanka, where I needed, but the Savage lives there, there is a garage and the opportunity to park a motorcycle.

The top settled comfortably against the front wall, standing upright. But I warned him that he shouldn’t get used to this!

Then in Samara I stood next to the Savage’s stroller for almost a week. It was still not possible to get there and overtake. Yes, and the Retired Man drove around the city. It will definitely give way to the Wolf on the highway, but in a city clogged with traffic jams, not everything is so simple... Much better steering at low speeds, narrow steering wheel, not much worse acceleration. Today I removed the tank again and redid all the wiring on the ignition circuit. Made it the way it should be. It is also worth replacing the fuse box with a modern one, similar to blade ones. And I don’t like the “musical” wires on the front turn signals. I immediately installed a spare switch. And as a spare ignition system, I’ll hang the Uktusov coil in its original place, and hide the PM-ku in pair with it. I think that the combination of PM and this coil will give me the opportunity to drive on my own if any components of the working ignition system fail. They also urgently asked for replacement gas hoses, although they are only a year old. Yes, I installed a temporary tachometer. It doesn’t fit the style, it’s lying exactly twice as fast on this engine, but at least it will give you an understanding of what speed and what revolutions correspond. Otherwise, calculations are calculations, but they need to be checked!

What is hidden under the guise of a predator?
As stated above, the design of the motorcycle is very thoughtful and comfortable , however, the system has one huge drawback - the motorcycle is not designed for the Brembo braking kit, so the front fork is not damped at all (as well as the front wheel tires).

The bike also does not have a closed cardan.

There are wires hanging on the handlebars, and the cylinders of the boxer engine get very hot (only with the footrests moved forward).

Another drawback is that while driving it becomes difficult to change gears.

Let's look at the advantages and approximate prices of textile cases for snowmobiles, as well as foreign ones.

The purpose of this equipment for a snowmobile is to help it perform better off-road.

The engine is not the bike's strong point.

"Wolf" is equipped with an engine that was developed almost 60 years ago, if not more. In general , it works well, and allows you to calmly and measuredly cover long distances .

The engine creates exactly the same amount of “extraneous” sounds as any typical analogue.

Russian motorcycle Ural Wolf

The Ural Wolf motorcycle is considered special! Firstly, this is the first chopper that was created by the Russian motorcycle industry. And secondly, members of the most famous biker association “Night Wolves” took part in its creation. That’s why the motorcycle has a self-explanatory name – “Wolf”! Design

The motorcycle has features from its American counterparts of the 50s, which makes it attractive and classifies it as a classic style. Moreover, it does not have a single feature of previously released Russian bikes. The unit has a very long base, due to which its shape appears spread out. The distance between the front and rear axle is almost 1700 mm.

The motorcycle has a very low seating position, which makes it look more solid and makes it more maneuverable. Many bikers highlight the steering system as one of the highest quality, considering the foreign motorcycle industry. It uses Italian bearings and conical angular contact rollers.

A fully equipped beast weighs about 250 kg; if you compare similar units, it does not stand out in terms of mass. And the low seating position makes it easy to place it on the stand without the risk of the motorcycle falling over.

It looks very aggressive, chrome parts and plenty of leather give it a brutal appearance. And the driver behind such a device looks very respectable. Technical characteristics Despite the high-quality and well-thought-out design of the bike, it has a couple of noticeable shortcomings. There is no shock absorption on the front fork, it is simply not provided. The motorbike has an open cardan, and there are wires hanging on the handlebars, but these are rather nit-picking. It is much more important that you will have to get used to changing gears; beginners have a hard time with this.

The motorcycle is equipped with a large 21-liter tank and a powerful 45 hp engine. The engine is not the Volk’s strong point, since it was developed about 60 years ago. Nevertheless, it is famous for its reliability; you can safely go on long trips with it.

The maximum speed is 140 km/h, and the average consumption is slightly more than 5 liters per hundred. The rear suspension is made using pendulum system technology, with two shock absorbers at once, so driving on our roads is quite comfortable.

The four-speed gearbox shifts harshly, you have to make an effort to show the Wolf that you want to go faster. As for the comfort of the trip, this is a controversial issue.

The unit has two types of leg placement, i.e. two pairs of footrests. The first of them is classic, like on any other analogue. The second is a forward stance, but it takes some getting used to, and the hot cylinders directly under your calves don't add to the comfort. Conclusion “Ural Volku” is a fairly high-quality motorcycle, assembled to meet the needs of Russian bikers. It accelerates at a good speed and is equipped with a reliable, albeit old, engine. The front steps pose a direct danger to your legs, you need to be careful here. The damping system and gear shifting take some getting used to, but once this happens, the discomfort disappears.

Estimated cost

Before we move on to the price categories, it should be recalled that the model has not been produced since 2011 .

But the secondary market is replete with offers for this model of motorcycle from a domestic manufacturer.

You can buy a used Ural Wolf in perfect condition, for example, with a mileage of 9,000 km, for between $3,000 and $3,800.

The modern motorcycle Ural Solo ST continues the classic traditions of the Ural, which has been produced since the times of the Soviet Union.

An equally popular domestic motorcycle, which until recently was found everywhere:

Ural “Wolf” harmoniously combines a silhouette directed towards the horizon, varnished or matte black color and the soul-caressing roar of the engine. Let's look at the appearance of this brutal model, the design of which did not deviate from the already recognized and beloved American motifs.
