Higher, further, stronger, or Briefly about tuning
The Buran snowmobile is one of the most common snowmobile models in our country. In terms of power, it is comparable to a small tractor capable of transporting small loads. It will not be possible to make a racing snowmobile out of it, but some modifications are still possible.
By replacing or customizing standard parts, you can achieve greater productivity, efficiency and ease of use of this model. “Buran” begins to obey its owner more if the starting point is sharpened, the maximum speed is increased and the centrifugal regulator is adjusted. In addition, you can make your snowmobile consume less fuel, which will help you save a lot of money. You can read about some of these upgrades and do-it-yourself tuning below.
Engine modernization and tuning
Craftsmen also strive to increase the number of engine revolutions. The basic Alpina installed on a snowmobile is somewhat limited, so if you have some experience, it can be slightly tweaked to work the way we need. The easiest way is to replace the standard regulator with a more advanced one, for example, “Safari” - a model that is installed on “Taiga” and “Lynx”. Many foreign snowmobiles are equipped with regulators of a similar design. At the same time, we did not feel any significant difference when installing them.
"Safari" is easily and cheaply tuned and configured. Thanks to the modernization of the Buran, a good result is achieved with the help of this regulator - the speed of the snowmobile increases and fuel consumption is significantly reduced. How is this possible? The fact is that the standard Alpina is simply not refined properly, hence the increase in power.
What parts are needed?
For the remodel you will definitely need:
Steering mechanism | You can use any automotive mechanism with a steering column and rods. The standard mechanism for one ski or another from motorcycle equipment will not work |
Additional springs for skis | The easiest way is to use spring springs. You can take them both from a car and from various mechanisms. It is necessary that the springs be able to be adjusted and attached to the ski, and also have the same stiffness. The springs must provide the ski with a certain degree of freedom so that it can swing back and forth a little. |
Two skis | They take shorter ones than the one for the single-ski circuit. They also need to have a curve at the back. This is necessary so that in case of reversing the snowmobile does not bury itself in the snow. Reverse gear on a snowmobile with two skis has to be engaged more often than with one, especially when driving through the forest. |
New mask | Usually the snowmobile has to be rebuilt by changing its mask. A new mask can be taken from a serial two-ski snowmobile, but you can weld it yourself. |
Additional fasteners | The skis and steering will have to be secured somehow to the snowmobile frame. This may require additional pipes, rods and other parts. |
Welding is almost always required for the job.
We improve cooling and sound insulation
To improve your snowmobile's cooling, it is important to maintain carburetor, ignition, and lubrication settings. But the problem is radically solved by refining the cooling system. To do this, you need to properly insulate the exhaust system. In this case, the air will not be heated by the exhaust manifold. On the other hand, due to high temperatures, muffler segments may burn out. Therefore, it is more correct to organize a separate air supply and install a heat shield separating the cylinders from the exhaust manifold.
The effectiveness of this approach will be immediately noticeable, even if you do not have special sensors installed. Some use a double fan for cooling. However, this is not a completely proven method, since, according to the theory, both impellers can interfere with each other.
Many users also complain about the “loudness” of Buran. To make it quieter with your own hands, you can replace the roller bearings with others of a closed type. This will prevent you from having to change the lubricant as often, which will result in a quieter overall operation of the snowmobile. In addition, you can insulate the Buran engine compartment using inexpensive modern materials.
How to remake a Buran snowmobile yourself
In the vastness of the North and Siberia, for a long time, residents of rural outbacks cannot do without a Buran snowmobile in winter. This little hard worker is like a tractor, clumsily and stubbornly pulling the load through the snowy taiga. Yes, you can't drive it. But local residents need it not for entertainment, but for work. But if you increase power, optimize torque and reduce fuel consumption, you don’t need new models. This is the cheapest snowmobile, which is very important for a person who counts every penny.
Ways to improve work efficiency
In order to improve the performance of the snowmobile, it is necessary to work on the centrifugal regulator, carburetor and bore the purge channels of the engine itself.
To simplify the work with the centrifugal, we will replace it with the same unit from the Taiga snowmobile. In order to make a transition in size, you will have to make a transition cone. Leave the cone itself from the “Taiga”, making a transition inward from the “Buran”. This is important for increasing engine speed when taking off. At higher rpm, the power increases when starting to move.
To increase the power of the engine itself, it is necessary to bore the purge channels of two-channel cylinders. This method is not suitable for four-channel. After cleaning the channels and grinding them, the assembled engine will noticeably increase power. In addition, to increase it, it is necessary to replace the factory muffler at the inlet with a fine-mesh filter, which is attached to the carburetor.
The carburetor itself also requires replacement with a Mikuni. It fits and does not require adjustment. Due to greater compression in the combustion chamber, operating efficiency increases. Only with one carburetor it is necessary to select a pipe size of 38 mm. And for better engine performance, you should use AI-92 gasoline.
Optimization of other components of the snowmobile
For a snowmobile to operate reliably, it is also necessary to:
- streamline the fuel supply at startup;
- reduce noise effect;
- optimize the chassis.
To optimize the start, it is necessary to install a nozzle from the Taiga. Connect the tube to the starting fitting and dose the fuel, taking into account climatic conditions and the nature of engine operation. At the same time, emissions are reduced and fuel consumption is slightly reduced.
To reduce noise, cover the motor chamber with soundproofing material. The noise will be significantly reduced. To prevent failure of bearings on rollers, replace them with closed ones so that the lubricant is not washed out.
After all the changes, the snowmobile will not participate in speed competitions, but it will perform better in strength work.
Many hunters and fishermen, as well as other people, own the Buran snowmobile. They use it with pleasure, note its reliability and ease of use, and the large selection of spare parts in stores. Installing two skis on a Buran snowmobile increases its handling and ride comfort.
Complete modernization of the snowmobile
To completely modernize a snowmobile, some companies provide special tuning kits. It is worth noting that by purchasing parts this way, you can sometimes save a little. Here is a typical Buran upgrade kit:
You can make your ride more enjoyable by improving your snowmobile's braking system. A standard lever is not suitable for this purpose, since braking is given to the driver at the cost of incredible effort. To facilitate the process, a lightweight spring is installed, and the lever arm is increased.
Is it possible to make a Buran snowmobile with two skis?
The experience of many do-it-yourselfers says that it is possible. Moreover, there are “Buran” snowmobiles with two skis, which perform many useful jobs - servicing electrical networks in the northern regions, in rescue services, in the ambulance service. There are also many of them in the garages of hunting and fishing enthusiasts.
The main idea of everyone who wants a Buran with 2 skis instead of one is a smaller turning radius and greater stability. This is a significant advantage when driving on difficult terrain. In addition, there is such a thing as “planing” in the snow. It is felt while driving on freshly fallen, powdery snow, which has great depth. Usually these are snowdrifts in the forest. A snowmobile with two skis moves forward well on such a road if you know how to control it and maintain speed, but with one ski it often “sinks.”
Typically, remodeling takes a long time and requires special knowledge, tools and parts. But converting the Buran snowmobile into two skis will not always improve its performance. For example, many argue that with one ski he can get through the bushes much better. Considering that the banks of most reservoirs have not been mowed for a long time and are thickets of willow bushes, willow bushes, willows and other similar plants, this quality may be useful.
Is it possible to make a Buran snowmobile with two skis for driving through the forest? Some argue that with one “Buran” ski it is better to pass through dense forest. For example, if you catch a tree trunk between your skis, there is a high probability of breaking them, but with one ski you can usually pass such an obstacle if you hit your mask.
Again, slowing down when driving in the forest can lead to burying in the snow. Hunters who do a lot of riding in the trees and don't have much snowmobile experience might want to consider whether they need this kind of modification.
External tuning
To make driving a snowmobile convenient, you need to purchase and install a modern on-board computer. The functionality of such a device is quite wide - it can display on special indicators the speed of the Buran, the number of engine revolutions, its temperature, conditional mileage and a convenient clock. This will not only expand the capabilities of the model, but also make it more modern.
To make your sled more attractive, you can update the hood, install LED bulbs, upgrade the night lighting and add a bumper bumper at the front. The latter looks stylish and will protect the Buran from collisions and impacts.
The updated, reupholstered seat and body paint will add sportiness to the snowmobile. A stylish and at the same time useful feature will be the presence of a winch, which is selected in accordance with the pulling capacity of the model. The installation of a wide off-road track will add aggressiveness, which, among other things, increases the snowmobile’s ability to pass through snow drifts and makes it more maneuverable.
As you can see, the good old “Buran”, with successful tuning and proper modernization, in some respects can give a head start to imported snowmobiles. Externally, as can be seen in the photographs, after proper tuning, it looks especially impressive.

Shock absorber for Burana ski
The shock absorber is specially designed for the Buran snowmobile and constant operation in a horizontal position, which will ensure its correct and trouble-free operation in the most severe conditions.
Special filling ensures faster access to the glider. The best practices in this area were used in production. Installation can be done in any auto repair shop or with your own hands in half an hour. Welding required. The kit includes a shock absorber and mounting brackets.
Step-by-step instructions for installing two skis on a Buran snowmobile
- The old ski and steering are removed.
- A new one is mounted into the steering pipe so that the steering rods on the left and right are above the snowmobile frame. This may require moving components under the hood of the Buran.
- Before putting two skis on the Buran snowmobile, an estimate is made of where the springs will rest and how the steering will be connected to the skis.
- Prepare the skis in such a way that they are tightly connected to the steering wheel. To do this, additional rod gussets and brackets are usually used, and a tube or rod is attached along each ski.
- The springs are being installed and adjusted.
- The steering is being checked.
Clips with crankshaft seals for RMZ-640
Everyone knows of cases when standard oil seals are squeezed out during operation and the engine fails. Also, the cause of engine failure is the destruction of the spring, after which its contact with the edge of the cuff also disables this unit. Damage to the seals leads to a lean mixture as a result of air leaks and is a consequence of the destruction of needle bearings and burnout of the pistons. The idea of a new design of the races and additional modifications to the crankshaft was proposed by V.P. Novoseltsev.
We have just finalized this unit, eliminating the shortcomings of the design developed during times of shortage, when it was necessary to use oil seals designed for auto-box shafts.
To ensure long-term engine service, instead of the standard ones, races with an imported cuff are used, manufactured according to aviation standards and withstanding high engine speeds and increased pressure.
Operation over several years has shown the reliability of the design and trouble-free operation of the engine.
Engine block RMZ-640
An RMZ-640 engine block assembled from original parts with already installed races with cuffs (high-quality, equipped with a ring to prevent the spring from flying off), a modernized DD exhaust manifold with improved exhaust manifold gaskets, original spark plugs from Japan, will allow you to quickly, efficiently and on a budget make repairs or upgrading your Buran snowmobile.
You can also equip the engine with a modernized cooling system, an electric starter, ignition, a manual starter, high-voltage wires and spark plug caps, an original K-65Zh or Mikuni carburetor, throttle and corrector cables, a built-in or free-standing fuel pump, a bushing for a variator or an electric starter crown at your discretion.
Since 2015, the crankshaft can be equipped with a high-quality roller bearing on the variator side, which significantly increases the service life of this unit by reducing the load.
