Buran 4td with Kohler Engine Fuel Consumption • Buran adade

Buran 4T-4TD is one of the most popular Russian-made snowmobiles. The machine belongs to the class of utilitarian snowmobiles, among which it is one of the most affordable - at least compared to its competitors. This model was developed by qualified engineers who have adopted more than 40 years of summer experience - this is a developer of high-quality Russian products that began producing its first snowmobiles in the early 1970s. In particular, it was in 1971 that a prototype of the Buran snowmobile was first presented. Of course, over the years the car has gone through several upgrades and generations, and in 2014 the latest generation, called Buran 4T-4TD, was released. This is an original model, equipped with a proven layout and modern technology to meet modern standards and regulations. The equipment received an economical four-stroke engine, but the unique “Buranovskaya” design scheme deserves special attention - it consists of one rotary ski and two tracks. This arrangement is expensive and very rare in its class, since even imported models have only one track and two rotary skis. In addition, among other features, let us pay attention to the productive power unit with the Kohler injection system, which is responsible for the rational distribution of the fuel mixture. The motor develops little power, which is enough for active driving on difficult roads, as well as for transporting heavy loads. Fuel consumption has been reduced by 15% compared to its predecessor. The developers have seriously modified the exhaust system, in which the pipes have undergone modernization, and the muffler is rigidly attached to the frame of the snowmobile.

In general, the manufacturer fulfilled all the main requirements of its potential customers - before launching mass production of the next generation of the Buran snowmobile. These are requirements that relate to improvements in practicality, handling, environmental friendliness, spaciousness and load capacity. It was also possible to significantly reduce the noise and vibration emitted by the power plant at idle and high speeds. And despite a significant set of improvements, the updated model turned out to be not much more expensive, unlike its predecessor, which is inferior to the Buran 4T-4TD model in almost all respects.

The standard equipment of snowmobiles of the Buran 4T/4TD family includes an electric engine starter. Please note that the 4TD model is an improved version of the Buran 4T snowmobile. So, in the first case, the snowmobile of the same name (4TD) has an elongated platform, which is designated by the index D in the name of the machine. In addition, the improved version received an increased wheelbase to be able to transport various loads. A spotlight is of no small importance for the convenience of working in the dark. As for the model with a short wheelbase (4T), it is capable of transporting up to 250 kg of cargo, while the 4TD version can handle loads weighing up to 500 kg. Thus, the 4TD snowmobile can act as a tractor.

Buran 4T/4TD - a new generation of domestic snowmobiles

is one of the leaders in the domestic market in sales of utilitarian snowmobiles, which has inherited vast experience and traditions over all 40 years of work. The first samples of snowmobiles produced by this manufacturer rolled off the assembly line back in 1971. This year the legendary snowmobile Buran was created. In 2014, a new generation of this model was released, namely the Buran 4TD snowmobile. The machine uses an economical and durable four-stroke power unit and a unique “Buranovsk” design theme: 1 support ski and two tracks. Unlike its previous models, Buran 4TD is equipped with a new Kohler injection engine. The rated output power of this unit reaches 21.33 kilowatts, which translates to 29 horsepower, while later models are capable of developing a rated output power of only 27 horsepower. It would seem that if the power has increased, then fuel consumption should also increase, however, the manufacturer even managed to reduce it by 15 percent. The exhaust system was also slightly modified, namely the pipe was modified, and the muffler mount was moved to the frame of the car.

When creating this modification of Buran, the manufacturer fulfilled all the wishes of consumers, among which the most important were comfort and fuel efficiency. The level of noise and vibrations arising from the operation of the power plant was also reduced.

All the changes, as it turned out, did not affect the final cost of the snowmobile. The car is still very affordable. Moreover, this particular model is the most affordable compared to other cars using similar power plants.

Trailers and sleds

Also, this snowmobile is an ideal option for performing various business tasks, as it has such advantages as engine efficiency and the ability to tow quite massive loads on a sled in the most difficult off-road conditions. As a controlled parameter when carrying out tests in the technical conditions for snowmobiles produced by JSC RM, the value of the control fuel consumption in liters per 100 km of track was established, determined when the snowmobile moves on snow cover with a density of 0.30 to 0.35 g cm, a well-trodden snowmobile trail with constant speed of 30 km/h.

Test drive BuranSB-640 A

The AN-2 aircraft and the Buran snowmobile have a lot in common.

They are both used on unprepared surfaces, are easy to operate and are structurally ready to work in the conditions of the Far North. In the 60s, the AN-2 was discontinued; the first Buran was assembled in 1971.

Today, Burans are produced at the production facilities of NPO Saturn (formerly Rybinsk Motors), a subsidiary. According to the most conservative estimates, over more than three decades, about 280,000 Burans of various modifications and configurations have been produced. However, the fundamental design of the device has never changed.

Residents of Siberia and the Far North (the main consumers of Burans) are so accustomed to unpretentious machines that even now they are wary of snowmobiles of modern designs from famous foreign ones, reasoning something like this: “When leaving for the tundra or taiga on a Buran, you take with you a cat with spare parts and always know that you will return home on time and on a snowmobile.” You ask, where do they get spare parts? So, more than one Buran was inherited from my grandfather and father. All parts from old cars fit like “native” to new snowmobiles. In general, many advertising and PR teams from various companies tried to wean people away from Burans. All failed.

Representatives of Russian Mechanics decided to take a different route and finally dared to make a fundamental design change to the archaic Buran. So far, only as an experiment (at least something!) instead of the usual and well-known 34-horsepower RMZ-640 engine, the Vanguard engine of the American company Briggs & Stratton was installed on the Buran. Vanguard has a displacement of 640 cm3 and a power of 22 hp. Maximum speed 45–50 km/h. With the RMZ-640 engine, the Buran drove no slower, but the overseas engine has many advantages. It is more economical - for 100 km you need not 25 liters, but only 15 liters of fuel. The low-revving Vanguard engine produces truly incredible thrust at very low revs. Torque reaches its maximum already at 2600–2800 rpm! At the premiere test drive of the Buran with the new engine, other updated models of Russian Mechanics snowmobiles - Taiga and Ataka - were presented.

So, where modern cars got stuck in deep snow or overcame deep ravines only by walking, the Buran never skidded, failed, and did not show in any way that under the driver there was actually a snow cover 1.5–2 meters thick . The Buran with a four-stroke engine crawls onto the slopes of steep hills without acceleration and with the confidence of an asphalt paver. Although, it should be noted that with the new engine, the total weight of the snowmobile decreased by 10 kg. Theoretically, the Vanguard resource should exceed the “lifetime” of the two-stroke RMZ-640. But theory is theory, and how the “American” will behave under harsh conditions of real operation is still unknown. Meanwhile, rumors that a new engine was installed on the Buran have already reached our Far North. And you know, many “storm breeders” have already announced their readiness to take risks and try out the “master of the North” with a new iron “heart” in action.

The article describes the main advantages and technical characteristics of the KOHLER engine used in Russian Burans. The American “heart” in the Russian “Buran”

It would seem where Russia is and where America is. Two completely different countries with their own climate and their own requirements for technology. But the engines installed on a number of Russian snowmobiles belong to the American company KOHLER. The latter is one of America's oldest manufacturing companies. Yes, yes, Russian Burans have an American “heart”. KOHLER is a leader not only in the production of internal combustion engines, power generator sets and uninterruptible power supplies, but also equipment for hospitals and schools.

What else should I add? Here's what. The company was founded in 1920 and after a long history of development, began to work together with such an American giant as Lombardini

.
During the period of cooperation, the companies launched many models of generators and internal combustion engines running on liquid and gaseous fuels (you can view the entire list on the company’s official website www.kohlerengines.com
). It is the latter that create the company's reputation.

What's good about KOHLER engines

?
Let's watch together. Firstly
, due to the optimized design, the engines are economical. After efficiency comes their second quality – reliability. Cost-effectiveness and reliability, what else is needed for Russia and its roads? The company is continuously working to optimize its engines. Moreover, this statement is not unfounded, on the official website and “crash” tests are testing new products. Everything is open and accessible to the consumer. It should also be added that for the production of such products in the USA there are a number of examinations, without which the engine will not only not be put into production, but will not be called an engine at all.

Main modifications of KOHLER engines

The KOHLER engine range is divided into series. Each series in turn is divided into several lines. Engines of a specific line may differ both in terms of power and design, as well as in the design features of the shaft, cylinder group devices, and the presence/absence of a gearbox.

Description and technical characteristics of the snowmobile "Buran"

A power unit from IZH-Jupiter-3 was installed on board the Buran. However, the engine from the motorcycle did not provide enough power, so it was decided to create a new engine. This is how the first model RMZ-640 appeared, which has undergone more than one modification during its existence. To this day, RM engineers use this engine in their equipment.

Description of the model “Snowmobile BURAN 4TD 110002000-03”

By creating this modification, we fulfilled the wishes of customers: increased comfort and fuel efficiency, and also reduced vibration and noise levels.

The “BURAN 4T / 4TD” model with a Kohler four-stroke injection engine (29 hp) appeared in 2014. The snowmobile has a modified exhaust system: the pipe is modified, the muffler mount is moved to the frame.

The improvements did not result in an increase in the retail price of the snowmobile. “BURAN 4T / 4TD” are the most affordable snowmobiles with a four-stroke engine among full-fledged snow machines equipped with similar power plants.

Both models are equipped as standard with an electric engine start system. The letter “D” means a model with an extended platform.

“BURAN 4 TD” is equipped as standard with a spotlight, and a long wheelbase with a cargo area allows you to transport luggage, fuel cans, as well as fishing gear and hunting accessories. In the short model, the weight of the towed trailer is 250 kg, and with the long wheelbase of the snowmobile – 500 kg.

Do you need a snowmobile for business needs? The choice is obvious: “BURAN 4T / 4TD”. The main advantages of the model are its efficiency and the ability to tow massive loads in the most difficult off-road conditions.

Ergonomics

Buran has two full seats with a backrest for a passenger. There is a wide, flat platform for the feet. In all three modifications it is finished with anti-slip rubber pads. In terms of cargo transportation capabilities, the domestic manufacturer offers the following options:

  • Buran A has dimensions of 2.7 x 0.91 x 1.35 m. The only luggage compartment is located under the seats.
  • Buran Leader has a long wheelbase of 3.1 m and has a rear luggage area. This is the most optimal model for transporting goods.
  • Buran 4T/4TD can be 2.7 or 3.1 m long. The longer version will also have a fenced luggage area.

To prevent snow and wind from flying into your face, there is a high windshield. It stands almost vertically and covers the driver well. The towbar allows you to attach a trailer for transporting goods.

Scandic has anatomical seats. They do not merge into a common line, as in Buran, but are clearly separated by levels. This helps the driver and passenger not to move towards each other during shaking. There is a support arch on the steering wheel to make it comfortable to stand up. A high soft backrest is provided for the rear passenger. Since the chairs are located at different levels, the footrests are also angled to make everyone comfortable.

Skandic also has a wide windshield and a luggage platform at the rear. But it is located higher than that of Buran, so the load gets less wet from snow splashes. The length of the Scandic WT 600 E-TEC and WT 550 is 3.2 m, and the WT 900 ACE is 3.3 m, which gives room for legs and ample space for luggage.
