Good day, bikepost community. Initially I wrote a question in Q&A, but it somehow got swollen and in the end I decided to collect all the information in one post. There are some difficulties associated with this story, as well as with the fate of my motorcycle, from the very beginning - the story falls into several categories at once and, perhaps and unfortunately, I will choose the most emotionally intense topic of recent months - “Breakage”, which led to a major overhaul during the mileage at 32,000 km. I will try to write the story succinctly and with a sufficient number of photographs, and if you are interested in the cause-and-effect relationship of the title and this short description, please, under the cat.
Purchase
This winter I was looking for a motorcycle on a very limited budget. The initial equipment was already there at that time, and the matter remained with choosing a motorcycle model and a suitable specimen. The moment for the purchase was not the most successful - the turmoil with the exchange rate had just begun, it was no longer possible to purchase a new Chinese moped, and used Chinese ones, which had gone through 1-3 owners on the secondary market, were absolutely unprofitable. So my choice fell on the Yamaha YBR125. Armed with memories of servicing the Karpaty moped, YouTube advisors and a couple of friends who were at my level, I went to look at the red 2012 Yubrick. The owner left a good impression - he is an auto mechanic, he loved his motorcycle and seemed to take care of it (of the “new things” - shabby corrugations, mudguards, rubber protection all around) + the motorcycle was registered, and in our area for such a cubic capacity the numbers are found in one out of five . Yubr was rated by me as a solid 4 (wrongly). Of the jambs discovered at that time:
- The plastic muzzle was damaged after a small accident. I didn’t attach much importance, because I wanted a round headlight
- a dead, cracked front cylinder and a crushed front disc. And again I did not attach much importance to this fact. For the future, this is a reason for a good bargain or refusal to buy (why this is so - further in the text)
- side plastic with broken fasteners here and there
- the right cover sits on the sealant - the clutch was changed (at 20 thousand?)

Next is the standard set - filters, oil + drive gear and... the front cylinder and here the first difficulties began. The choice of tires for the Yubra is perhaps the most discussed topic in RuNet regarding this motorcycle. After reading the forums, I went to a motorcycle store, where a Shinko 90/90-18 tubeless tube was purchased for 1800 rubles and the wheel was immediately re-aligned. Local dealers claimed that it would be perfect for the YB, the forums said the same thing, but this rubber did not fit under the wing bridge. Well, why not change the tires? It was decided to order a kit including:
- Round headlight yoke
- Special ubroid enduro wing with attachment to the above-mentioned yoke
- Normal corrugations
- Wind protection for hands (later it was very helpful when riding in sub-zero temperatures)
- In addition, a rotten round headlight with the inscription “Made in the USSR” from IZH was found
The result of installing all this stuff (it was and is now. Don’t mix it up!):
Blue electrical tape is a small tuning to give the yubr a brutal look (in fact, the consequences of the first fall). At 30,000 the fork seals began to leak. I replaced them, anthers, 20w oil (there was about 50 ml of fluid left in the left pen at the time of replacement). The old front cylinder was steadily deflating within 24 hours; the former owner assured that the reason was the condition of the tires. After replacing the tires, nothing changed and a more detailed check showed serious deformation of the disc. Apparently they tried to straighten the disk and it began to burst, as air was etched at the base of the beam. A new disc has been ordered. When inspecting a motorcycle with a dented rim, wipe it with a sponge and soapy water.
Distance and breakdown
The season was in full swing, I often went to gymkhana in a neighboring city and went 200 km away to visit my parents for the weekend.
There I turned it up a little to plus XX and the engine began to work... somehow differently. Perhaps this was not a coincidence, but I did not react in any way to the changed sound of work - “well, xx has grown, now the engine is a little more vigorous and turns,” - that’s how I explained it to myself. After a trip to my parents, I went on a 1500 km long trip. It didn’t work out with him from the very beginning, but he made it from Rostov-on-Don to Pyatigorsk with grief, having overcome a small section (about 7 km) under the armpit with dried yubra. In Pyatigorsk, I discovered that I was driving at a minimum oil level, topped it up and drove back in the direction of RnD. In Nevinnomyssk, 400 km from home, the engine started knocking. The motorcycle was still running, but partial disassembly eliminated all possible variants of “simple” breakdowns and the youth continued his further journey in the trunk of his brother’s car to Rostov, and from there again in the trunk of my Fiat, albeit in a semi-disassembled state, home. Next was a complete disassembly of the engine and an attempt to find out the cause of the breakdown. Realizing that I had a rare form of hands-on behavior, permanent bad luck and stupidity, I blamed myself for the engine's oil starvation due to underfilling of oil. However, a study of the device showed that the Yubra engine is practically not susceptible to oil starvation and could run for some time on 200-300 ml of oil. A complete disassembly of the engine revealed the true cause of the breakdown - a defect in the crankshaft oil seal:
The oil seal spring got lost somewhere, probably eaten by the engine. The crankshaft had not had enough oil for a long time (perhaps its entire life) and its life had expired: one bearing began to make noise, vertical play appeared at the connecting rod, and the piston left small scuffs in the cylinder. The photo shows traces of sealant - the previous owner took off the right cover and changed the clutch. Whether this could be partly the reason or not is unclear, just as the desire of people to save 250 rubles on a normal gasket is unclear.
Instead of a conclusion
In this whole story, at some point I wondered whether it would be rational to restore the motorcycle or sell it in this form or even for spare parts. But it was decided to order spare parts and, as my friend noted, I can be completely confident in this motorcycle, because there is nothing else that can break (I really hope). CPG, crankshaft, seals, gaskets and bearings cost ~10,000. The total expenses on the motorcycle and its condition are approaching the cost and condition of the new pre-crisis motorcycle (about 80,000 were spent along with the cost of the motorcycle).
