Features of preparation and storage of the fuel mixture
Safety regulations require diluting gasoline and oil in a metal canister. This eliminates the risk of static electricity and fuel combustion.
Experts advise pouring oil into an incomplete container, stirring thoroughly, and then topping up with pure gasoline to the specified level. Saving working time by preparing the working mixture directly in the gas tank of the chainsaw should be excluded from everyday practice.
This technology is fraught with fuel system failures due to large amounts of oil getting into the carburetor, requiring disassembly and thorough washing.
It is better to prepare the mixture in quantities that should be enough to complete one-time work. The problem is the irreversible deterioration of the working properties of the mixture during storage. It is recommended to use the finished composition over the next few days.
A mixture of gasoline and month-old oil impairs the traction capabilities of the engine. There is also the formation of resinous compounds in the fuel system and intense carbon formation in the combustion chamber, loss of mobility of the piston rings.
- With minimal damage to quality, it is advisable to store gasoline and oil for no more than 2 weeks. At an ambient temperature of 25 degrees Celsius or more, this period is reduced to 8-10 days.
- In order to save money, the expired mixture can be gradually consumed by mixing it into the fresh composition in an amount of no more than 10% of the total volume.
To avoid problems associated with fuel system failure, it is recommended to filter the prepared mixture through a non-fibre material such as suede, or a fine-mesh twill weave or metal mesh.
Rules for using the mixture
The proportions of gasoline and oil for two-stroke engines should never be changed. Some drivers do not attach much importance to this rule. Since oil is expensive, they try to save it. However, an insufficient amount of this component in the mixture can lead to overheating of the piston and cylinder of the engine itself. As a result, problems arise that require major repairs.
How much oil should be added to gasoline for a two-stroke engine if its percentage cannot be reduced? If you increase the amount of this component, it will affect the functioning of the engine. Excess oil will cause carbon deposits, and the motor mechanism will wear out faster.
It is important to remember that you cannot keep the prepared mixture for more than a month, as it loses its own characteristics, and its use will have a detrimental effect on the engine.
It is necessary to ensure that no dirt, dust or other debris gets into the presented mixture, due to which the engine will stop working.
“I’ve been using M-8B all my life, and nothing!” What kind of oil to pour into IZH, Voskhod, Minsk and other two-stroke engines!?
Not so long ago, the question of oils was not particularly asked, and why, the choice was very modest. The leaders were two brands: M8B1 or M10G2k, and if you were lucky, you got MS-20 aviation oil, which was the leader among those listed. M8 oil was recommended in their motorcycle instructions by almost all manufacturers of two-stroke bikes, all for the same reason - the paucity of choice. But there was one “but” - all these oils are not intended for two-stroke engines, although readers will probably say that they have been driving on them all their lives, and nothing, and this is true. These motor oils certainly created an oil film on the cylinder walls and fulfilled their function - lubrication of the CPG, but with all the consequences - strong smoking, coking, etc. There have long been dozens of oils for two-stroke engines on the modern market, which are full of advertisements about the best properties of their brand. Four-stroke oils also have an unpleasant feature - additives that two-stroke engines do not need at all.
Oddly enough, there is one main requirement for two-stroke oil - to ensure high-quality lubrication of the CPG of a two-stroke engine in different operating modes, while it would be nice to have low smoke, complete combustion of the oil and, of course, leave a minimum of combustion products in the piston group. The oil should also dissolve well in the fuel and not settle to the bottom of the filling container over time.
Now let’s choose some of the best oils for two-stroke engines. And they were compared according to 3 main criteria:
2) Anti-wear properties.
3) Ability to burn in fuel
Now let’s see which ones you can safely use in your motorcycle. And I think this will surprise you, when we have Italian and Japanese oils on the counter, we can safely buy the special two-stroke oil MGD-14M, which the author uses on his not-so-young IZH motorcycle. Why? Firstly, the price tag for oil in auto stores is about 300 rubles per liter container, which is enough for 50 liters of fuel. Here is the current price for such oil.
For comparison, let’s take the popular two-stroke small from Motul crossmen. Its properties are approximately similar to MHD, and even slightly worse, judging by the information from the examination of the ZIL laboratory. But for an imported brand they are already asking a price tag of 1,600 rubles on average - more than 5 times for domestic oil. And at the same time, Motul cannot be bought in a regular car store. Although the author preferred motor oils of this brand for his Japanese motorcycle, and for good reason, there were no problems with it.
Or in auto stores you can often see Castrol oils, which also have two-stroke oil in their line, but the price tag is also not encouraging.
In general, there are still domestic oils for sale for two-stroke engines, and according to reviews from the owners, they are quite good; the author also used this oil:
Due to the fact that it was always in the store, and also in the standard proportion of 1:50, there were no problems with it, but high smokiness was observed. Probably 1% of the total abundance of oils is represented here, but the idea was to show one from the best optimal options and not burden yourself with the agony of choosing among a bunch of brands. And a few more words about our beloved M8 - today it is most likely not advisable to use it, when there are more suitable oils that will be more suitable for your engine. And at the same time, a terrible proportion of 1:25 or 30 was always recommended for the M8, which is why the exhaust smoke is high, which does not eat well. The only thing that captivates us is the price.

Signs of misuse
Using a dirty or disproportionate mixture can cause serious engine problems. If you make a mistake when mixing, it’s okay, because the car itself will tell you about it. You just need to be attentive to some signs, including:
- The appearance of dirt and various deposits on the carburetor.
- Rapid contamination of the fuel filter located in the gas tank.
- Oxidation of the carburetor walls and loss of elasticity of the rubber diaphragm in various parts of the gas tank. This symptom appears only when the unsuitable mixture is stored for a long time directly in the gas tank of the car.

Rules for preparing the fuel mixture
The process of preparing the fuel mixture should begin with a detailed familiarization with the instructions attached to it. As mentioned at the beginning of the article, some drivers, who, in their opinion, have incredible experience, do everything “by eye”. Of course, over time, every driver knows how and what needs to be done, however, each mixture has its own differences, so it will never be superfluous to familiarize yourself with the advice from the manufacturer.
The main rules for operating the fuel mixture include:
- Under no circumstances should you reduce the proportion of oil to gasoline. Oil is an expensive component, so many people decide to save on it. However, an insufficient amount of oil in the mixture leads to strong heating of the engine piston and cylinder. Because of this, scuffs appear, which ultimately leads to the need for serious repairs.
- Do not use too much oil in relation to gasoline. Increasing the oil proportions is also detrimental to engine performance. Excessive amounts of oil lead to increased carbon deposits and rapid wear of the motor mechanism. Repair in this case will be as expensive as in the first case.
- The prepared mixture cannot be stored for longer than 30 days. Otherwise, it loses its properties and the use of such a mixture may cause harm to the engine.
- Do not allow dirt, dust and other mechanical debris to enter, which could cause the engine to become unusable.
Benefits of branded oils
Many domestic and foreign manufacturers specialize in the production of special motor oils, but the highest rating indicators are for branded products Shtil, Husqvarna and Makita.
Only in certain parameters the branded assortment is inferior to domestic motor oils of the Lukoil brand.
Taking into account external factors, the fuel mixture can be adjusted to increase the amount of oil. This need arises at the stage of a new tool, as well as at high air temperatures. In this case, the standard dosage of oil is increased by 20%.
In practice, an increase in the percentage of oil in the fuel mixture is used if its characteristics do not fully meet the stated requirements. How much oil per liter of gasoline is needed in each specific case is determined by the sawyer himself.

Formation of tarry deposits in the carburetor area.
At the slightest manifestation of one of the signs, it is necessary to make changes to the mixing process, choosing more suitable proportions. This way you can select the ideal fuel mixture and avoid serious problems with the engine.
To independently prepare the correct fuel mixture, which will ensure ideal engine performance, you must use the appropriate fuel, strictly adhere to the proportions specified by the manufacturer, use a suitable container and store the finished mixture for no longer than 30 days. By following these rules, you will prepare the ideal mixture for your car's engine.
Lubricants
More stringent criteria for selecting an oil component. The best option is a mineral or semi-synthetic motor oil recommended by the manufacturer, designed for use in high-speed two-stroke air-cooled internal combustion engines.
The advantage of mineral oils is their lower cost. Their more expensive semi-synthetic and synthetic analogues compare favorably with improved performance characteristics and compliance with environmental standards.
Synthetics:
- maintain performance properties over a wide range of operating temperatures;
- do not form soot;
- contain detergents, antioxidants, preservatives and other additives useful for the operation of the power unit.
