The domestic motorcycle “Jupiter Izh-4” is a two-wheeled, middle-class vehicle designed for movement on various types of road surfaces. The device was produced by the Izhevsk plant from 1980 to 1985. This technique has earned popularity due to its reliability and ease of maintenance. An additional side stroller can be connected to the motorized unit, allowing you to carry another passenger or certain cargo.

The motorcycle in question had serious competitors on the Soviet market. First of all, it was the Czech apparatus “Java”. It had a more sophisticated design and excellent speed parameters. Izhevsk designers, while developing the Jupiter Izh-4, decided to increase the maximum speed threshold by modernizing the power plant.

The Soviet bike replaced the third model; over a five-year period, more than a million samples were produced and sold. After 1985, a new modification was released, known as “Jupiter-5”. It could also be equipped with a side trailer; some variations received a reduction in speed due to an increase in speed, which increased the maneuverability of the vehicle.

In the fourth quarter of 1983, the first batch of new road motorcycles “IZH-Planet - 4” rolled off the assembly line of the Izhmash association. Maintaining continuity with the “planets” of previous models, the “fourth” has incorporated many design changes aimed at increasing operational reliability, safety and ride comfort, as well as improving appearance, dynamic and other performance qualities.

The similarity in appearance of the new “Planet” and “Jupiter-4”, which is already well known to motorcyclists, is striking. This is natural: the wheels and their guards, steering wheel and fuel tank, suspension and brakes, cladding parts and mufflers are unified, and the introduction of new components on the Planet was carried out gradually.

The new motorcycle is equipped with the same single-cylinder two-stroke engine as the IZH-Planet -3 02. But, unlike its predecessor, it has 12-volt electrical equipment, the main devices of which were previously introduced on the Jupiter-4 model (“Behind the wheel”, 1981, N9 4, 8, 11). This is a 6MTS-9 battery, an alternating current generator with a power of 100 W, more advanced lighting devices: a FG137V headlight with an asymmetric low beam distribution of the “European beam” type and an A12-45 + 40 W lamp, direction indicators of type 16.3726 with 25 W lamps. The illumination of the road has improved, and driving in traffic has become safer.

Of course, the electrical equipment of Planet-4 and Jupiter-4 is also maximally unified. The differences are dictated only by the fact that the Planet engine has one cylinder, and the Jupiter engine has two.

The motorcycle is equipped with an automobile-type ignition switch 14.3704, a brake light switch for foot and hand brakes, combined switches for lighting, alarm and emergency engine shutdown, as well as a steering column lock. The control devices are assembled into a block located above the headlight, like in Jupiter-4.

To increase the safety of the driver and passenger, there are arches and folding footrests. Wheels and guards are usually painted with enamel to match the color of the car; on some motorcycles they are chrome-plated.

The new “Planet” will be produced both as a single version and as a set with a VMZ-9.202 side trailer (this trailer is also used for the “Jupiter”). In the coming years, the Vyatsko-Polyansky plant plans to develop a new side trailer, more convenient and comfortable. It can also be used with Planet-4 and Jupiter-4.

"Izh Jupiter-4": technical characteristics

Below are the main parameters of the technical plan of the modification in question:

An important role when operating the Jupiter Izh-4 motorcycle is played by correctly set ignition. The cam-type assembly requires adjustment so that the generator armature is in a level position and the fixing bolt is tightened to its maximum setting. To increase the service life of this vehicle, it is necessary to check the spark plugs, ignition system and other elements subject to mechanical stress and moisture.

As the owners note, among the Izhevsk exhibits, the fourth series turned out to be the most unsuccessful. Against the backdrop of low engine speed, the motorcycle still has a significant number of disadvantages, namely:

  • There is often an oil leak from the crankcase of the power unit;
  • after a short period of operation, the working fingers begin to ring;
  • the working life of the gearbox is very limited;
  • there is a relatively high fuel consumption;
  • there is no system for monitoring fuel levels, oil levels and engine temperature;
  • outdated design;
  • with minimal knowledge in the transport sector, repairing an Izh Jupiter-4 can cost a pretty penny, especially if you do not pay attention to proper adjustments to the launch system.

Differences from its predecessor

The equipment in question differs from the third series in a reinforced engine, which is three horsepower more powerful. The designers managed to increase the figure due to the updated layout of the cylinders. The Izh Jupiter-4 engine is equipped with elements that provide wide purge windows. Thanks to this, the crankshaft speed was increased to 7800 rotations per minute.

Alas, the race in speed and driving performance with competitors has a negative impact on the overall quality and reliability of the vehicle. The cylinder block does not provide for increased strength of parts, which resulted in a reduction in the working life of the power plant. Among the innovations we can note modern electrical equipment operating at a voltage of twelve volts. This made it possible to improve the lighting when moving in the evening, as well as create a more powerful spark at start-up.

Appearance of Planet 4

The external design of the “new” Planet is approximately the same as that of Jupiter 4, this is known to all Soviet motorcyclists. That is, the wheels, guards, steering wheel, tank, suspension and brakes are the same for these motorcycles, even on the Izh Planet 5 tuning everything is approximately the same.

Planet 4 is equipped with exactly the same two-stroke single-cylinder engine as the IZH Planet 3 02. But the 4th Planet has 12-volt electrical equipment, a 6MTS-9 battery, more advanced devices: FG137V headlight and A12 lamp - 45 + 40 W , as well as direction indicators type 16.3726 with 25-watt lamps, and of course, a 100-watt alternator.

Thanks to these lamps, the road lighting has become better and driving in traffic has become a little safer.

The electrical equipment of Planet 4 and Jupiter 4 is almost the same, the only difference is that the Planet’s engine is single-cylinder, while Jupiter’s is 2-cylinder. IZH Planet 4 is equipped with an ignition switch (14.3704), as on cars of that time, a brake light switch for hand and foot brakes, light switches, a steering column lock, and a steering column lock.

Under the headlight there are control devices assembled into a block, the same for Jupiter 4. The safety of the driver and passenger is ensured with the help of arches and folding footrests. In general, IZH Planet 4 motorcycles were appreciated by Soviet motorcyclists, because these motorcycles can easily be called workhorses, like Java motorcycles, and they are inexpensive to maintain, and this has always been an advantage.

Modernization

Izh Jupiter-4, the tuning of which is carried out mainly by owners in the engine, can be improved by replacing the cylinders and increasing the piston stroke.

In the first case, you will need to be patient and attentive, since the process is quite labor-intensive and difficult. At the same time, the costs are only minimally recouped due to a slight increase in the power of the power plant.

The second option is more productive and allows you to achieve decent power gain. To adjust the operation of the engine in a new mode, you will need to master the skills of correctly changing valve timing. In a two-stroke unit, they are adjusted using special windows in the working cylinders.

By grinding sockets of different sizes, you can achieve better traction or engine speed. An improved power plant will require more fuel, therefore it is necessary to expand the intake section. The main thing is not to overdo it, since an excessively squandered incoming phase will provoke splashes of the fuel-air mixture (backburst).

If the settings are incorrect, fuel enters the atmosphere, which reduces the power and service life of the engine. To solve this problem, you will need to install a reed-type check valve, which will allow fuel to penetrate at the inlet and protect against backflow. As a result, the input part of the motor can be expanded to 360 degrees.

Reviews

The Izh Jupiter-4 motorcycle received both positive and negative feedback from consumers. Real professionals assure that if preventative maintenance and appropriate maintenance are carried out correctly, the service life of the “iron horse” in question can be significantly extended at minimal cost.

Some owners note that much in the operation of the bike depends on the technical condition in which it was purchased. In addition, consumers consider the rather high engine power and good cross-country ability of the Jupiter Izh-4 motorcycle as advantages. Most often, complaints are caused by the unstable functionality of the voltage regulator relay, as well as the rapid wear and tear of the main elements of the power unit.

Structural nuances

It is worth noting that the model from the designers of the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant was at one time considered one of the most modern. The developers introduced a new body into the modification, modernized the engine and implemented the best developments in the field of creating two-cylinder “iron horses”.

Considering that a completely new anti-vibration system and a fundamentally different fuel tank configuration were mounted on the old frame, the bike in question became a real breakthrough in the segment of domestic two-wheeled motorized equipment. A more powerful multi-disc clutch can also be considered an advantage of the model.

The Izh Jupiter-4 vehicle, the characteristics of which are given above, has received an updated shock absorption system and electronic equipment. The last node is very similar to the analogue used in the legendary sports version “Planet-Sport”. It is from this variation that the battery and most other elements related to electrical equipment, including the generator and coil, were borrowed.

Another important feature of the fourth Izh is the informative and modern dashboard. This block contains all the necessary indicators (turn sensors, speedometer, ignition warning lamp). Despite some shortcomings, Jupiter-4 was in serial production for five years and took its rightful place among analogues in its class.

The ability to connect a side trailer increased the transport capabilities and carrying capacity of the device. The legendary fourth series motorcycle from Izhevsk manufacturers was replaced by a new modification known as the Izh Jupiter-5, although both variations can still be found on the roads.

Description of the motorcycle Planet 4

Izh Planet 4 is a motorcycle from the middle weight category, it feels equally good both on asphalt surfaces and on field roads. The production of this motorcycle model began back in 1983 and continued until 1987. It was produced in two versions, with a side trailer (with a cradle) and without it. Production has been discontinued due to the transition to another model, Izh Planet 5.

Unlike previous 3 Series models, Izh Planet 4 has a much more reliable ignition and a completely new generator. The move from 6-volt to 12-volt equipment certainly added a few positives. And the more advanced instrument panel adds brightness and personality compared to other older series motorcycles.

Along with the new instrument panel, the Planet 4 motorcycle received qualitatively new shock absorbers, both forward and backward. Moreover, the shock absorbers of the rear wheels were radically different in the first used feature for adjusting the stiffness of the springs. A new and very successful fuel tank for its time made this model range even more individual, and complemented the picture of the Izhevsk model with a convenient tool box.
