Functionality
Before the Taiga Varyag 500 went on sale, it was tested for several years on the Kola Peninsula. The snow bike passed all tests perfectly, but this is a very difficult region. The technology showed itself well when driving to mountain peaks, easily overcoming deep snow masses, driving along frozen rivers, conquering wet slopes and muddy forest foothills.
The snowmobile really has high cross-country ability, reliability and convenience. At the same time, the Varyag 500 is the lightest snowmobile in the TAIGA family (dry weight 265 kg), which provides the vehicle with maneuverability.
Oil
Lukoil 2t is not for snowfields, have mercy on the equipment. Is the dealer really not carrying Taiga 2t semi-synthetic oil or Ekoil? Well, or Motul from foreign cars, people drive. Run-in 1:25. 1:20 is a lot, this is not Buran. After running in 1:40, 1:35 in cold weather and under load. Lukoil 2t for Soviet motorcycles and boat engines, you can also use Buran, its other name is MGD-14, it’s a mineral water with God knows what additives. Lukoil is NOT SNOWMOBILE oil.
But still, where can I get the “+” and “-” sensors under the hood, please tell me, otherwise they write that you can’t change the variable time, you have to take a constant one, I’m at a dead end. So install the cheapest battery, charging relay (our price is 1700 ), and then power all additional equipment from the battery, starting with temperature sensors and ending with the cigarette lighter socket.
From various sources, as I understand it, the Varyag 500 is built on the basis of the old Taiga, as if taking into account the jambs.
The declared appetite is 22-25 liters per 100 km, depending on the snow cover it can be 60, almost the same as that of the Taiga Patrol 550. But the powerful Yamaha nitro snowmobile eats less - 15-20 liters.
There are holes for the starter. The crown must also be placed.
The compression in the cylinders for the Varyag 500 should be 9.6 atm. the norm for air.

Chassis
The front suspension of the Taiga 500 snowmobile is telescopic, has a travel of 105 mm, which, in combination with an equally functional rear suspension with a travel of 190 mm, will ensure comfortable movement both on smooth snow and over rough terrain. It is worth noting that the rear suspension is equipped with a hydropneumatic shock absorber and torsion springs. This design allows you to enjoy driving when fully loaded and light. As for the caterpillar, the model is equipped with a 500mm Composite, which has proven itself on more than one released model. The rear heel of the suspension is catchable, which greatly facilitates reversing.
Engine
The Taiga Varyag 500 snowmobile is equipped with a carburetor two-stroke two-cylinder engine RMZ-500. This power plant develops a power of 31.63 kW, which translates to 43 hp. With. The maximum speed that a vehicle can reach on a flat and straight section is more than 80 km/h.
The DUCATI CDI programmable ignition system is responsible for optimal engine operation in all modes. The motor has an air cooling system that prevents the power plant from overheating. The diameter of each of the two cylinders is 72 mm. Their total volume is 0.497 liters. The piston stroke is 61 mm. A Mikuni model float carburetor is installed. The exhaust system consists of a muffler with a resonator, and the intake system includes a muffler.
Snowmobiles of Russian Mechanics. Our response to the Chamberlains
I was, understandably, skeptical about the invitation (from the same one that produces the legendary Burans) to test their utilitarian snowmobiles not just anywhere, but in the Khibiny Mountains, where only recently we rode top-end imported mountain bikes: “scrap”, yes still Russian, in the mountains? This is strange, to say the least. And very curious
Natalya Umnova
“Russian Mechanics” brought four models of utilitarian snowmobiles to Khibiny: “Taiga Varyag 550 V”, “Taiga Attack 551”, “Taiga Bars 850” and, one might say, a new device - “Taiga Varyag 500”.
The windshields of all snowmobiles distort visibility, especially in the sun: the slope or depth of the holes is difficult to understand. Photo: “Russian Mechanics”
I will give credit to all the snowmobiles (except for the “Attack” - due to a poorly tuned variator it is impossibly nervous and jerky, riding it is torture!) - they showed themselves very worthy and dispelled my skepticism. Although there was some luck in this: in April the snow in the Khibiny was already very dense, there was no powder in which you could get stuck, and we rode the slopes only for pleasure, and not out of necessity. And yet, no one expected that on the horse-drawn, at first glance, “Varyags” you could bundock, traverse, climb a steep mountain, and jump. Still, “scrap” is often capable of much more than it seems.
Taiga Varyag 500
Lightning-fast response from the Rybinsk company to the updated Yamaha Viking 540 Tough Pro (read the test of this snowmobile in one of the upcoming issues of “5 Wheels”). The essence of the transformations of the standard Varyag is to reduce the cost as much as possible. By removing the separate lubrication system, installing the old proven, but less powerful RMZ-500 engine and a simple suspension with one shock absorber, the cost of the snowmobile was lowered just below the psychological mark of 200 thousand rubles! And for the target audience of such equipment, even 20–30 thousand is a serious amount. At the same time, the heating of the steering wheel grips and throttle trigger remained in the “base”!
The windshields of all snowmobiles distort visibility, especially in the sun: the slope or depth of the holes is difficult to understand. Photo: “Russian Mechanics”
The resulting minimalistic utilitarian snowmobile nevertheless has a comfortable soft two-seater seat and a high steering wheel, thanks to which it has become much more comfortable to ride this “cut-off” “Varyag” both sitting (knees do not rest against the steering wheel when turning) and standing. And you have to get up on it quite often: the suspension practically does not smooth out ridges on compacted roads and just potholes and bumps.
The “five hundred” handles a little worse than the “main” “Varyag”, it is more “tight”. The motor is paired with a variator made according to the drawings of Russian Mechanics: unlike the Canadian analogues installed on other RM snowmobiles, this one does not handle starts and low speeds well - the snowmobile “stalls” for a long time before moving off and becomes noticeably nervous when driving slowly and twitches. But as soon as you increase the speed, the snowmobile levels out and goes smoothly.
Snowmobiles of Russian Mechanics. Photo: “Russian Mechanics”
The transmission provides low and high “gears” for pulling loads and more active driving, respectively. And 43 “horses” are enough for him to do everything, including climbing a steep slope 500 meters high.
The mechanical brake requires serious physical effort, but even after pressing hard, the snowmobile is in no hurry to stop. In general, the Varyag 500 is capable of overcoming almost any obstacle that comes along its utilitarian path.
Taiga Varyag 550 V
Surprisingly, in terms of ease of control and comfortable landing, the more expensive Varyag 550 V is perhaps even inferior to its “undressed” version of the Varyag 500. The 550 is very rolly! “Pyatisotka” too (both have a ski base of only 90 cm, while the same Yamaha Viking 540 has a 96 cm), but at least it has a higher handlebar, and you can tilt the snowmobile by standing up. On the “older” “Varyag”, the low steering wheel immediately rests on your knees, as soon as you make a sharp turn, and does not allow you to not only drive normally while standing, but even just stand up if necessary. This is also hampered by the manual starter handle, which you hit with your knee during any jerk or braking.
Snowmobiles of Russian Mechanics. Photo: “Russian Mechanics”
A more modern suspension with two shock absorbers, it feels, does not handle unevenness much better than the simple suspension of the “five hundred”. However, 50 l. With. power and a fairly wide, 50 cm, caterpillar with 2.2 cm “teeth” (the same is found on the 500) “equip” the “Varyag 550 V” with sufficient cross-country ability for both compacted and medium-powder snow. An additional 60 thousand in cost stems from the presence of an electric starter, a larger engine, a more advanced suspension and a couple more goodies for comfort.
Taiga Bars 850
A luxurious soft seat with a passenger backrest, digital instrumentation, a wide - 60 cm - track, a high windshield, an 850 cc Weber engine, a steering wheel high enough for comfortable steering and standing, the beginnings of design - the Taiga Bars 850 is a real touring snowmobile with a hint of premiumness for 360,000 rub.
But even here there were some minor problems. The Bars has very slippery footboards, with almost no uneven surfaces for your boots to cling to: when riding standing, your foot can easily slip on uneven surfaces.
Due to the heavy nose and the position shifted forward, the rear is noticeably carried away, which is good in turns - you can “swerk” and go in steeper, although with caution, but it’s bad on the straights, on which, despite almost a “windtrack” and widely spaced skis, the snowmobile stands not very confident. The same property of the stern and the large weight must be taken into account when descending from long slopes: the Bars accelerates strongly, the engine does not brake effectively enough, and if you press the hydraulic disc brake, the rear skids.
At Bars, the rubber bands on the hood keep coming off. And the transmission mode selector is inconveniently located - you keep knocking your knee on it. Photo: “Russian Mechanics”
This year we worked hard and tried to eliminate previously identified problems with possible engine overheating and high collector temperatures, and simplified the process of servicing the fuel pump and filter.
In general, I cannot help but note that the snowmobiles of Russian Mechanics, even after tests of famous brands, did not cause rejection or strong negative emotions. Yes, there are mistakes and shortcomings, but it is clear that the company is working, developing, becoming more and more “civilized” and producing increasingly high-quality equipment. Keep it up!

With all its advantages, high performance indicators and reliability, the Taiga Varyag 500 turned out to be a truly inexpensive piece of equipment. Currently, there are snowmobile models on the market from other manufacturers with the same functionality and features, but at a much higher cost.
"Varyag 500" being tested
When testing the car, it was noted that a simple suspension still affects ride quality. But if you drive through the problem area while standing, the situation is easily corrected due to the high steering wheel. On the other hand, a small mass easily reaches heights. At least, this is the impression compared to how the other, heavier Taiga snowmobile behaves.
Reviews from pilots indicate that the Varyag has proven itself to be a durable and reliable machine. This was evident when the pilots covered considerable distances with melted snow, as well as areas with the so-called frozen storm. The car passed all tests with dignity. Therefore, in general opinion, simplifying the details and reducing the cost of the device, with the exception of minor inconveniences, generally did not worsen its quality characteristics. But you can save a lot of money.
Domestic technology
An undoubted advantage is that these vehicles can move through terrain where large all-terrain vehicles are almost useless due to their significant weight and large size. The popularity of Russian models is also evidenced by the large number of reviews from owners about the Tiksi snowmobile.
Now in this market segment there is a huge selection of snowmobiles from domestic and foreign manufacturers available, belonging to completely different price ranges. In the lower price range, the Russian car “Taiga Varyag 500” produced by the Rybinsk plant stands out.
This model represents a new generation of domestic snowmobile equipment and differs from previous models in its reduced weight (only 265 kg), although it is not as light as the Tiksy 250.
Taiga oil with added nanoparticles 140ml… Operating parameters
My Varyag has covered 910 km, it completely sucks, it squeals like crazy, you are constantly worried that it will break, I can’t move very far, I decided to sell it, it breaks down mainly due to small things, I hesitated to carry all the keys from the garage. For the premium Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobile models with the maximum number of options, an electric servo motor controlled by a button on the handlebar was developed to engage the mechanical reverse of the 1203 engine.

How is the Taiga Varyag 550 V snowmobile controlled? Owner reviews
The steering of the Varyag is designed in such a way that the rider can be quite comfortable in a standing position and control the car. In early versions this was quite problematic due to the low position of the steering wheel, and the windshield interfered with visibility. This problem has been completely solved by the developers of the 550 Varyag.
The snowmobile accelerates quite quickly and picks up good speed without any problems. When moving, the car moves smoothly and softly, which is facilitated by the telescopic suspension and powerful engine. In general, coping with road “delights” is not a serious problem for the Varyag. And to overcome the forest thicket, it is enough to reduce the distance between the skis, and it will be much easier to control the snowmobile.
Despite the fact that the Varyag is still a utilitarian snowmobile, in skillful hands it can overcome significant ascents and descents, as well as perform complex maneuvers.
Top 2. Polaris WideTrack LX 500
Average price: 550,000 rubles.
Country: USA.
Rating: 4,5.
Polaris WideTrack LX 500 is an American utilitarian snowmobile with a powerful engine. Polaris is famous for its reliability; the owners of the car also note the simplicity of the design.
The Polaris WideTrack LX 500 is a typical wide track utility vehicle. The snowmobile can be used for long trips: the model is suitable for traveling long distances and can carry large loads - up to half a ton. The snowmobile cannot be called light, since its weight is 278.1 kg. Nevertheless, the chassis design allows Polaris to move through deep snow. Note that all snowmobiles from the WideTrack LX series are suitable for heavy work.
WideTrack LX 500 is one of the brand's most popular and reliable snowmobiles. The WideTrack LX 500 differs from the touring and sports models in its modified driver's position. The Polaris WideTrack LX 500 isn't a fast sled, but it has impressive traction. Snezhik accelerates to 80 km/h on powder, and on ice it will go more than 110 km/h. The Polaris WideTrak LX 500 tank holds 41.6 liters. The design of the snowmobile is very simple, the model is highly repairable. Some work can be carried out even while traveling.
WideTrack LX 500 has established itself on the Russian market as a simple but reliable model. The disadvantages of the unit include high gas consumption and difficulties in purchasing spare parts. In addition, Polaris is significantly more expensive than its Russian counterparts: the cost reaches 550,000 rubles. The Polaris WideTrack LX 500 is an unpretentious workhorse, which is why the snowmobile is popular among outdoor enthusiasts.
Top 3. Irbis Tungus 500L
Average price: 240,000 rubles.
Country Russia.
Rating: 4,2.
“Irbis Tungus 500L” is a domestic utilitarian snowmobile, produced entirely in Russia. Equipped with an 18.5 hp engine. With. The main feature of the Tungus is the modular frame, which has a tracked unit module with additional internal reinforcements. The weight of the model is 218 kg.
Torque is transmitted through the Safari variator. All configurations use a Buran type reverse gearbox with an oil volume of 150 ml.
The snowmobile is equipped with a roller-slide suspension, which is an extraordinary engineering solution. Both modules are located under the tracks, so the device overcomes obstacles well on various types of surfaces. Amenities: electric starter, heated grips, waterproof ignition switch.
You can go fishing or hunting on the Irbis; the obvious advantage of the snowmobile is its spaciousness. The permissible towing weight is up to 150 kg. You won’t be able to ride with the breeze on the Tungus: the maximum speed is 45 km/h.
The most common problems that users encounter when operating the unit are problems with the subframe and muffler. The percentage of calls to service centers with these breakdowns is more than 70%.
The average cost of this Irbis model is 240,000 rubles. The price is good, but you have to put up with the above-mentioned disadvantages.
Snowmobile "Taiga 550"
At the end of 2012, the Varyag 550 V model appeared. The car has become convenient, comfortable, while maintaining its affordable price and unique functional qualities. The Varyag Taiga snowmobile has received the components necessary for residents of the Central District of Russia.
In the North, Urals and Siberia, snowmobiles are used mainly for household needs, and in the middle zone they prefer to spend their leisure time on them. Therefore, the equipment must have the optimal combination of comfort and low cost.
