IZ Jupiter 4 wiring diagram: features of the non-contact ignition system

The IZ Jupiter 4 wiring diagram has become a revolutionary solution for all domestic motorcycles. It was with this model that the Izhevsk Motor Plant began to equip motorcycles with 12-volt equipment, which significantly increased spark generation in the ignition system.

Motorcycle Upgrades

New electrical devices have appeared on the motorcycle:

  1. New generation alternating current generator with a power of 100 W;
  2. A new electronic unit consisting of a rectifier and voltage regulator BPV14-10;
  3. Electronic switch;
  4. Ignition coil IZH-PS;
  5. Modern instruments and warning lamps.

In addition, the power of lighting devices has increased, in comparison, for example, with the wiring diagram of IZH Planet 2:

  1. Headlights;
  2. Side lights;
  3. Direction indicators;
  4. Stop lights.

For reference: the combination of engine reliability and improved visibility has increased vehicle safety on public roads.

Forced modernization

Motorcycles of the IZH Planet 2 brand turned out to be of quite high quality. And although the plant stopped producing them in 1971, many copies are still in service.

And difficulties with spare parts force owners to upgrade motorcycles:

  1. Adapt parts from other models of the IZh family;
  2. Use spare parts from motorcycles from other manufacturers;
  3. Make the necessary parts yourself.

Remaking the standard electrical circuit

Do-it-yourself repairs of standard electrical wiring and its consumers cause particular difficulties:

  1. Incandescent lamps for dimensions, brake lights and head lights;
  2. Ignition coils;
  3. Spark plugs;
  4. High voltage wires.

For reference: modern motorcycles have long switched to 12 V, while motorcycles of previous years were universally equipped with a 6V electrical circuit.

Reworking the ignition system

Motorcycles of the IZh family (for example, in the Planet 3 wiring) have always experienced difficulties with the ignition system. Therefore, they have always been the object of close interest on the part of owners who conducted endless experiments in fine-tuning the vehicle.

The method presented below for replacing the standard ignition system with elements from the Voskhod and Minsk motorcycles was considered successful by the motorcycle owner community.

The upgrade instructions are as follows:

  1. Purchase a generator from Minsk or Voskhod motorcycles with a voltage of 14V and a rated power of 65 watts (90 watts);
  2. An adapter washer is made to install a new generator on the engine;
  3. A new ignition coil is purchased (possibly from Minsk or Voskhod).

It is best to order the adapter washer from a lathe to achieve high quality. The cost of such work is small. After manufacturing, the washer must be installed correctly so that its surface fits tightly to the engine.

Tip: When installing the generator on the adapter washer, you must ensure that it is completely seated. If the generator housing is not completely seated on the washer, the rotor will catch on the stator as it rotates, which will lead to its failure.

Contactless ignition system

The wiring diagram of the IZH Jupiter 4 had one more difference from motorcycles of previous years of production, for example, from the wiring diagram of the IZH Jupiter 3.

It was equipped with a non-contact electronic ignition, which improved all performance characteristics:

  1. Engine power increased by 3 hp;
  2. It is now possible to operate a motorcycle even with a dead battery.

Setting the ignition timing

Unlike the classic contact ignition circuit, as in the Java 350 electrical wiring, where the contact opening time can be determined and adjusted using a signal light, such methods are not applicable in a contactless ignition system (BSI).

Caution: The IZ Jupiter 4 wiring is not intended for testing the high-voltage wire for a spark - only on a spark plug leaning against ground. The fact is that too large a distance of the wire from the ground will provoke a voltage surge in the secondary winding of the coil, and the discharge will disable it. As a rule, such an “experiment” also disables the output transistor of the switch, which automatically leads to its failure.

To set the ignition timing it is necessary:

  1. Connect a voltmeter with your own hands to the circuit with the Hall sensor. Connect the “+” wire to contact No. 2, and connect the “-” wire to No. 3;
  2. turn the crankshaft to the position corresponding to the moment of spark formation in one of the cylinders;
  3. turn on the ignition;
  4. turn the modulator until the voltmeter readings change;
  5. the voltage surge corresponds to the moment of discharge of the BSG;
  6. fix the position of the modulator using the fastening bolt;
  7. repeat the operation for the second cylinder.

Tip: Use a voltmeter with a resistance of 10-50 kOhm, equipped with a scale of at least 15 V. This voltmeter will allow you to read the readings more accurately.

Electronic switch

A special feature of the contactless ignition system is an electronic switch. In fact, on all motorcycles and cars without exception, equipped with a three-phase asynchronous generator with electromagnetic excitation, it is absolutely the same.

Therefore, installing VAZ switches on motorcycles is not a whim or “stupidity”, but a completely reasonable approach from an electrical point of view:

  1. their operating principle is the same;
  2. operating parameters are similar;
  3. Overall dimensions allow installation on a motorcycle in a tool box.

For reference: on top of that, the price of “foreign” switches is cheaper due to their mass availability. Whereas on IZh Planet and Jupiter switches are a rather scarce spare part.

Voltage regulator

Another feature distinguishes IZ Jupiter 4 is the BPV14-10 rectifier and voltage regulator unit:

  1. It measures the voltage in the network;
  2. When it falls (low generator speed), the relay increases the supply of bias current;
  3. When increasing (high generator speed), the relay reduces the bias.

As a result of such work, the voltage in the on-board network of the motorcycle is constantly kept at the level of 14-14.5 V. This was done specifically so that the battery does not participate in the sparking process and is constantly charged.

What is the value of this model

Such increased attention to the IZH Planet 2 model is caused by the fact that:

  1. in total, just over 246 thousand were produced;
  2. and there are few surviving copies left;
  3. which only increases its value among collectors .

According to Izhmash, only 246 thousand Planet 2 models were produced throughout the USSR

Therefore, it is a great success to find preserved motorcycles in garages and sheds of villages and towns (as in the photo below). Moreover, if the previously discussed price has not changed, and the owners give you a bag of spare parts in addition, consider that you have hit the “jackpot” .

The new instrument panel fits well into the appearance of the new motorcycle model, combining:

  1. Speedometer;
  2. Automotive type ignition switch;
  3. Control and warning lamps.

The display of warning lamps separately from the instrument scales had a positive effect on the information content. Now the driver can easily see their readings, additionally provided with inscriptions.

It is also easy to replace burnt out lamps:

  1. Using a Phillips screwdriver;
  2. Remove 3 screws (in the diagram above under No. 3);
  3. Remove the cover;
  4. Remove the failed lamp;
  5. Install working;
  6. Reassemble the shield in reverse order.

Recovery process

When the euphoria of the purchase wears off, a lot of questions arise regarding its repair and restoration with your own hands.

The main task of the new owners:

  1. Restore the electrical system - and there are no particular problems with this, since the electrical wiring of IZ Jupiter 2 and Planet of the second and third generations is identical and interchangeable;
  2. Starting the engine is a more difficult task due to the need to overhaul the power unit and the availability of spare parts;
  3. Return the motorcycle to its original appearance . It is also quite complex and, perhaps, the most painstaking work of the entire project.

Note! For electrical work, you will need a wiring diagram for IZH Jupiter 2 - with the exception of the turn signals, they are identical. You can easily verify this by looking at the original photograph that was supplied with the factory instructions.

Let's consider the process of restoring the central lock, since in most surviving models it is faulty.

The difficulty is that finding the original lock is very difficult , almost impossible. Moreover, at 6V, since later the Izhevsk Motor Plant transferred all subsequent models to 12-volt equipment.

Therefore, many motorcycle owners adapt parts from later versions of Planets and Jupiters.

The difficulty of installation in this case is as follows:

  • Uncertainty about whether the lock will work;
  • How to properly connect wires.

Note! Parts from IZH are quite universal and fit many older motorcycles. For example, there is Java wiring with Izhevsk parts. But the IZH 2126 wiring diagram is unlikely to be useful for conversion - practically nothing from the namesake car fits the motorcycle.
