Suzuki Djebel 250 – review of the legend of the Japanese ENDURO class


Many motorcyclists who prefer extreme riding eventually dream of becoming owners Suzuki enduro. But the modern market has a rich variety of motorcycles in this class, and an inexperienced biker can simply get confused by such abundance.

In this article we will get acquainted with one of the best, if not legendary, motorcycles, which has a lot of positive characteristics - we present the Suzuki Djebel 250 . This bike is considered one of the best 250 cc “steel horses” with which off-road riding will be a real pleasure.

In 1996, it was restyled, the motorcycle received a tank twice as large, as well as cosmetic changes. But this is not the main difference between the generation. Starting this year, the bike becomes a separate model Suzuki Djebel 250 XC , and the DR250R .

Two years later, in 1998 the Suzuki Djebel 250 GPSver appeared . There is a built-in GPS navigator on the dashboard (though only with Japanese maps), but this development does not cause much interest and its production ceased in 1999 .

Production of the main model continues until 2000 . Due to the introduction of eco-standards, the carburetor is being changed on the model. Eight years later, in 2008 the tightening of the same standards put an end to further development.

The Djebel engine, like many Suzuki air vents, is noisy. When you stop, sometimes you hear a terrible clattering noise - this is also normal, don’t worry. The engine has an automatic decompressor installed, so it will not be possible to measure the actual compression in the cylinder. The only way to check is on the go (of course, if you have enough experience in your arsenal and the owner allows it). In general, the engines run here for a very long time (there is experience of 100–150 thousand km), but they are demanding on the quality of oil and air (the cylinder is nickel-silver). Therefore, keep an eye on the air filter (it is impregnated with foam rubber). And the slightest noticeable leaks at the inlet are a reason to refuse the purchase. Valve clearances are adjusted with washers (they will have to be ordered after measuring the clearances), but the complexity of adjustment is compensated by its relatively rare need (as a rule, this is 20–40 thousand km). By the way, a leaking cylinder head gasket usually indicates that the head has been opened.

The DR250R, which is the basis of the new Djebel, was used by many users as a Dual Sport . (tourist + enduro). The developers took this possibility into account and, using the same motor, reconfigured it slightly.

But basically it remained the same 1-cylinder, 4-stroke air-cooled engine.

That's all there is to it, but to the fact that I rode a wonderful 2003 Suzuki Djebel 250XC enduro for 2 seasons, covered about 14,000 km, and now I want to share my impressions. I have a feeling that this post will be big with a lot of photos.

The fact is that I'm something of a drug addict and I think I've found the perfect motorcycle for myself.;-) And also, I now believe that motorcycles like Jebel deserve to be proudly called Turenduro. And I'll explain why. Under the cut The second part is HERE. This... I have no idea now where my story will lead, so I apologize in advance for some confusion and a subtle smell of madness in my writing.

It means so. It all started when I owned a beautiful Suzuki Desperado 400 cruiser. You can read my report about it HERE. An excellent motorcycle, but for FLAT roads. Unfortunately, we have a bit of trouble with this and the asphalt rather resembles the wrinkled ass of a centaur, sorry. Despite the protest pain in my back, I did not give up and traveled all the asphalt roads around my house within a radius of 200 km. And someone somehow became bored. More and more often the gaze fell on the winding field paths leaving the edge of the forest. More and more often, the impacts of the rigid short-travel suspension softened my hip skull. And one day a turning point came, as if some cup had overflowed and I began to look towards a more universal technique.

But then, after several days of studying information on motorcycles, I chose Jebel. And so he was! This is how he came to me. M-a-a-lazy my.

Of course, crazy with happiness, I rushed to start it with the intention of taking it for a ride right away. Oh no, wait! I immediately began to drag him into my house, into my room. And he dragged me in. And so he was! But it turns out that the motorcycle smelled noticeably from the exhaust pipe. In this, he is somewhat similar to me.


Well, then I finally went out into the snow. But before that I couldn’t resist and started the motorbike right at home. Oh, how my hair started to rise in hidden places when I first heard the rattling of a single-barreled gun! So, I drove out and after about five minutes I slammed my face into the snow. I plowed through such a healthy canyon with my helmet. Of course, he slipped without spikes. And then I became puzzled by the production of MORDOVOCKS. I made chains for the wheels. But somehow they weren’t particularly impressive. Therefore, the next winter I covered the tires with dowels and it turned out just right! I ride them even now, scare the forest grandmothers, string cones, twigs, cats, animals onto the thorns.

Damn, someone took me back to memories. Nobody is interested in this. So, let's get down to business!

Enduro, how is it anyway?

Not so bad! Yes, even awesome! I thought that this would be a small motorcycle, just for people with a rather graceful physique, like mine, well, that is, skinny. And he turned out to be such a bastard! I was surprised, waited until the ice in front of the garage melted a little and went on my first trip.


Indescribable feelings, I must say. You feel so different behind the wheel of an enduro and a cruiser. It's like... like... like meat! Like chicken or pork. It looks like chicken and meat, but it’s somehow fake, like a bird or something. But yes, pork... Oh, this is fat, lard, lard with pieces of skin and black elastic hair sticking out. Mmm... Indecently high, like sitting on a throne on an enduro. And on a soft, but very narrow throne. And how easily it steers, and how it goes over bumps, but how it is blown away by the wind from the trucks... And it was still cold, snow, melted streams, and I so proudly came to endurve for the first time in my life. Delight in the eyes and a trickle of sweat flows down the back, from where there is no way out. I already had to push him in the mud. It turns out that all-purpose tires are such a bastard. I drove up an awesome hill with a cool view of our river, still covered with ice. Oh, I just felt inspired. And so, I gained wings:


It turns out that the universal tires are so universal that in the middle of the mountain they began to slip. I didn’t expect this turn of events a little and got excited. I started to be pulled back, and what a slope there was. What should I do, I think? It doesn’t slow down, it just accelerates and pulls and pulls me back. He turned the steering wheel and gently fell towards the slope. Oh, what adrenaline it was!


But that's okay. Then, when everything was dry, I gradually began to drive more off the asphalt. And then it started to overwhelm me more and more. While still sitting on the shiny Desperado, I was inspired by a feeling of freedom. But then the feeling intensified tenfold. Sitting on an enduro I feel an insane, all-consuming, boundless freedom. I really need to smell the flowers on that hill over there. Go! Oh, there's dirt on the way? Go! Arable land? Go! Swamp? Go! Sand? Forest path? Snow? Field? Lunar soil? Milk rivers, honey fountains? Lord Voldemort? GO! Roads become unimportant, only directions are important.

So, I'm kind of an inconsistent drug addict. Let's get addicted consistently.

Appearance

Well, to be honest, I don’t know what kind of design an enduro might have... In my opinion, they all differ only in the shape of the tank and the headlight. There is minimal plastic on them, no chrome at all, the wheels are all the same. I don’t really know much about clothes either, so appearance isn’t particularly important to me. The only thing is that the headlight, as big as the moon, gives the motorcycle a somewhat stupid look. So what! But she shines like the sun.
I once went, apparently, to the balloon festival in Kungur. By the way, you can read it HERE. So, it so funny happened that I was eating disgusting homemade roast in a cafe, and when I happily left there, I came across a group of motorcyclists going to the festival. It turned out that proud owners of two-wheelers were allowed directly into the stadium where the action took place. Well, I went there like a gentleman. He stood next to the other motorcycles. I see girls walking towards me with phones and cameras. I immediately pulled myself up, straightened my hair, and stood in a proud pose. I am waiting. I stand and don't move. I look out of the corner of my eye, and they walk past me and start clicking the shutters near Golda, who is hung with a garland, and then they head towards the sports.

Well, okay! But I can drive through mud, but they can’t! I can drop my bike, but they can’t! I can really go wherever I want, but they can’t! I am Dima, but they are not! In general, during the entire 2.5 years of owning Jebel, no one took a photo of it. Not at all. Never. So, gentlemen who think that I will have an enduro and all the girls are mine, don’t be too happy. Although, if you find a girl who likes the enduro philosophy, consider yourself lucky. And I'm lucky!

Engine


There is an engine here, yes.
250cc and 31hp Air cooled with oil cooler. I think it's a great solution. And there are no extra components and lines, as is the case with full-fledged liquid cooling, and the cooling efficiency is greater than in the case of pure air. I always read someone’s, they say, SINGLE-BARREL VIBRATION PARKINSON’S COFFIN CEMETERY and beyond. Nothing like that! There are no vibrations at all. Maybe I have a very soft, healthy and firm butt and that’s why I don’t feel them. But I haven’t received such compliments about my butt, which means there really are no vibrations. Oh my, Desperado even vibrated more strongly, especially in 4th and at a speed of 70 km/h.

It always starts up well. There is even a kick starter, but I only use it in winter. The engine doesn't eat oil. I don't eat either. Of course, the first question is: is there enough power? But that's enough! It’s enough for me both on the highway and off-road. To each his own, of course, but I'm still scared to unscrew the gas in second gear. It's scary. I know, I'm an impressionable guy, I still cry when Frodo sails off to Valinor, but the moto really rocks! I don’t even know if there is a cutoff there, i.e. speed limiter. I'm scared to unscrew it like that. Everything is relative, of course. Compared to cross-country racers, Jebel rides like a pensioner. But, I’m also a pensioner! So get it done! But, interestingly, on Desperado with its 400cc and 38hp. It was possible to move off calmly from idle, but now it’s no longer possible. There is not enough torque for this. But on a loaded motorcycle and with things, I kneaded mud, climbed mountains, and traveled through the forest and to distant lands. There is enough power.

What more can you tell me? I don’t know... nothing broke, I didn’t take it apart, I don’t even know what’s inside. It is likely that there are little pimply creatures spinning wheels there. Quantum physics fully allows this. But, just in case, I add 1.2 liters of semi-synthetic from Lukoil. And what? 650 rubles for 4 liters. I now believe that it is better to pour cheap oil, but change it more often. So I change it every 2500-3000 km. Everything works perfectly. Here. I did not adjust the valves. According to the manual, they are adjusted every 20,000 and are adjusted with washers.

Suspension


And there is a pendant here. And after Desperado, I feel like I'm sitting on a vanilla cloud. Everything is so soft, undulating, serene. On the Internet they write that small irregularities are not felt at all. Yes, sure! You can feel everything, only it’s something at the level of small swaying. Those. you know that there is such and such a surface under you, but the suspension absorbs the unevenness and reduces it by 10 times. I don’t know how to explain my feelings, but I really like the pendants. The only thing I noticed is driving on gravel roads when there are waves. In general, I spent several sleepless nights trying to figure out where this washboard comes from, tried to understand the physics of the process, but fell asleep. So, somehow the rear wheel begins to behave strangely at a certain speed, as if I were pressing the brake. The motorcycle slows down for a second, and then breaks forward again.


There are grease fittings in the suspension for lubricating the progression units.
But I never served them even once. I'll get started in the spring. There are also rebound adjustments, spring preload and compression damping. I turned a couple of times some screw on some kind of spray bottle, which is responsible for adjusting the damping of the rear suspension. But I didn’t notice any difference. I put it in the middle position and forgot about it. I don't know, everything suits me. More speed - fewer holes! Very good rule. Especially with a passenger and junk in the bags. The bike goes VERY smoothly. On gravel and primer like on asphalt, really. Here we can say that the pits are not felt at all. But I never pierced the suspension with a passenger and things. But you can feel a certain rolliness, and the front end sags a lot when braking, but everything is very tolerable.

I don't jump, I'm afraid. Once I went onto a motocross track, accelerated a little, flew towards the springboard, took off and almost knocked out several sand-lime bricks out of fear. If only a little more, the solution would have been added to them. I didn't expect such a funny feeling in my stomach from weightlessness. I got the hang of jumping a little. Moreover, it seemed to me that I was taking off like Icarus, and feeling the heat of the sun on my nose, but after watching my video, I realized that I was a little naive and in fact I jumped only half a meter.

On the road


Well, I've been riding a lot these days.
And a lot on asphalt. So, in comparison with Desperado, Jebel is less stable on the road. This is understandable, because the weight and position of the center of gravity are at the forefront here. The weight is small, and the center of gravity is high, so the bike is thrown a little from the wind, from trucks, from longitudinal cracks in the asphalt. Highway consumption is 4.5 l/100 km. This is if you cut at a speed of 85 km/h. I don’t know why, but at this speed the bike moves very smoothly, there are no vibrations, as if you were sitting on a gelatin sofa. A tank with a volume of 17 liters is enough for 350 km. This is before the reserve. There is still some in reserve. But I'm a drug addict, so I always carry a 5L canister with me. Never used it even once. Maybe because I have tea there...

The ass gets tired of driving for a long time. You need to do some ass exercises to prevent numbness. Or just stand in a stance for 30 seconds, and you can cut 20 kilometers again. Yeah... a hot topic, they say, but how to overtake trucks??? Yes, the dynamics after 90 km/h are not the same, but up to 90 km/h everything is fine. And if the truck goes 90 km/h, then I follow it. Yes, even if it goes 85 km/h, I still follow her and don’t try to overtake. And why? Because overtaking is the most dangerous maneuver. What is the time gain if you drive 85 km/h or 90 km/h? It’s good that I didn’t skip school, but I’m still a fool. So, let us have a distance of 100 km. How long will it take if our speed is 85 km/h? T=S/V. T=100/85*60=70.5 minutes. What if you speed at 90 km/h? T=100/90*60=66.6 minutes. Wow, sotona! Those. the difference is only 4 minutes! What I'm saying is, are these 4 minutes worth it to accelerate by 5 km/h, which will inevitably lead to dangerous overtaking? I decided for myself that no, screw it! Do you want to travel more? Stop less often, rather than drive faster. Here.

But it’s such a thrill when, in search of accommodation for the night, you can go anywhere in the field, sneak through the gullies and choose the quietest and most beautiful place. Eh...

Driving performance

The maximum speed measured in tests is 135 km/h . Users note that you rarely see such numbers. Only suicidal people can afford to drive one in the forest, and the “evil” stock tires won’t let you accelerate on asphalt. At the same time, a comfortable cruiser is 100-110 km/h .

Acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h is not so important for enduro, but according to user tests it is around 5 seconds .

Fuel consumption

Consumption, according to the manufacturer’s documentation, is 2.13 liters per 100 km . It should be taken into account that these are Japanese indicators, since the model was not designed for export. Users from Russia say that the 17.5 liter 400 km or more on one fill .

Advantages of Jebel - we consider all options

In order for a biker to understand why Djebel is so attractive for motorcyclists, let’s consider all its advantages:

  • Unlike all sorts of competitors, on Jebel it is necessary to change the oil every 5000 km. With proper operation and timely maintenance, it can be driven from up to 150,000 km without major repairs. Another plus is the rigid frame, which perfectly withstands serious accidents, falls and impacts;
  • On Jebel you can safely cover huge distances even on asphalt! Thanks to a comfortable seat, a spacious tank and even a trunk, a trip to a neighboring city will seem like a pleasant walk. Experts defined this enduro as excellent. The bike runs smoothly both on dirt and asphalt;
  • The bike's ground clearance is equal to 30 cm, then the suspension is 28 cm. With such indicators, such obstacles as bumps and holes will become simply invisible.

Now regarding the shortcomings of the Suzuki Jebel 250 :

  • If the rear brake breaks, then that's it, we're done. The design of the bike is such that it cannot be repaired;
  • Sometimes the footrest sensor gets “naughty”. When the step is thrown out, the engine is automatically turned off, which is extremely convenient for beginners. But sometimes, when riding over serious obstacles, it starts to work automatically and turn off the engine - this can create a number of problems for experienced bikers (which is why they get rid of it).

Otherwise the bike is just perfect.

Modifications

Since the bike lived a rather difficult life from modification to a separate model, they did not create other motorcycles based on it.

Advantages and disadvantages

This motorcycle is called legendary for its simplicity and reliability.

Suzuki Djebel 250 is light, strong and simple, suitable for both riding around the dacha and serious long-distance treks.

  • Power reserve , which not every classmate can boast of - large tank + economical engine = almost 500 km.
  • Unpretentiousness to fuel - what is available at a nearby gas station.
  • Suspension, which does not have much adjustment capabilities, is already configured from the factory in such a way that “you can jump over speed bumps, curbs or holes without slowing down.”

    The lower mount of the rear shock absorber allows you to make the motorcycle higher or lower by a couple of centimeters.

  • Light is usually the worst place in enduro, but here the engineers made a knight's move by screwing a 200 (!!!) watt .
  • The presence of an electric and kick starter allows you to start even with a dead battery.
  • Trunk (!!!) on which you can install case, turning the motorcycle into a road bike.

    Option of the maximum possible configuration with three (!) panniers and a bag on the gas tank.

As those who managed to ride say, everything is great , but I would like more dynamics.

The footrest sensor forcibly turns off the engine if the motorcyclist has engaged the gear but has not removed the footrest. This is a convenient function for beginners, but it often happens that when, due to serious off-road jumps, this sensor is triggered and turns off the engine, it becomes inconvenient.
