Honda Shadow 750 Spirit: review from Motodrive magazine

Bike features

Here are the main advantages of the Honda VT 750 Shadow:

  • high engine power for its time;
  • very wide wheels even for a cruiser;
  • carburetor system.

The bike has excellent performance for the class, which is explained by the constant updating of the model throughout its career. Modern versions of the classic 750, such as the Phantom and Aero, can be a good choice for connoisseurs of the line.

Dimensions and weight

The VT 750 Shadow is 805 mm wide, 2310 mm long, and 1190 mm high. The saddle height here is average - 695 mm. The wheelbase size is 1605 mm. Together with fuel, the weight of the motorcycle is insignificant and reaches 236 kg. A tank with a capacity of 12.5 liters is sufficient, since approximately 4.2 liters of gasoline are consumed per 100 km of road.

Motorcycle Honda VT 750C2B Shadow Phantom 2010 review

Honda VT 750 Shadow is a family of cruiser-style motorcycles manufactured by the Japanese company Honda since 1983. The Shadow family includes only motorcycles with a liquid-cooled V-twin engine ranging from 400 to 1100 cc, with the cylinders positioned at an angle of 52 degrees to each other. In 1983, Honda introduced the Shadow VT500 and VT750 series of motorcycles in an attempt to meet the needs of the American chopper and cruiser market. However, due to customs restrictions on imported Japanese motorcycles over 750cc, the VT750's displacement was reduced to 699cc in 1984, resulting in the bike being named the Shadow VT700. In 1985, the restrictions were lifted, and the Shadow line was soon expanded with a model with an 1100 cc engine, releasing the VT1100 motorcycle. The Shadow VT750 was replaced by the VT800 version in 1988.

The Shadow VT600 was launched in 1989 as Honda's new entry-level chopper. In 2000, the Honda Shadow Saber model was added, and in 2007 it was replaced by the 1300 cc VTX1300. Since 2011, the Shadow brand has been limited to one 750cc cruiser, available in Spirit, Aero, Phantom and RS trims. Thus, the Shadow line was actually removed from production. Honda's American-style motorcycles deservedly have a good reputation - style, excellent technical characteristics, comfort, ease of control, and all this at a good price - all this can be found in the Honda Shadow, and that is why motorcycles in this series are so popular among both beginners and experienced bikers alike. Average in terms of size, Shadow and Shadow Spirit are powerful enough to not get boring.

However, a monstrously powerful motor capable of accelerating a bike to cosmic speeds is, in general, not what chopper riders usually expect from their bikes. Choppers, first of all, should bring real pleasure from a trip somewhere along a country highway, when you sit quietly, watch how the road, kilometer after kilometer, disappears under the wheels of your bike, and feel in your place... The attractiveness of these motorcycles lies precisely in this , and their size, weight and proportions are perfect for bikers of different heights, weights and with different experience, from beginners to pros. And many ladies also like Shadow series motorcycles. It’s no wonder that motorcycles of this family are so popular. They are suitable for both everyday city driving and long-distance travel. There are a lot of reports floating around the internet in the spirit of “Honda Shadow conquers the Mongolian steppes.” Of course, enduro fans will only snort contemptuously, imagining a cruiser storming dirt roads, but in the right hands, the Shadow is capable of this too.

The most popular of the Shadow line were, perhaps, the Shadow Slasher 400 and VT 600, also known as the legendary Honda Steed, produced in 400 cc (for the Japanese market) and 600 cc versions, and had many different modifications, including equipped with a springer fork type.

Chassis and brakes

The tubular frame of the VT 750 Shadow is made of steel. It is a classic cruiser option, but, perhaps, it has rather old-fashioned shapes. However, for lovers of rarities this is only a plus. Alloy wheels may not seem very appropriate to some, but overall they look good. The steering wheel is quite large, but within the norms accepted for the class.

The rear pendulum suspension has two shock absorbers, and the front suspension is a simple telescopic fork. The rear brakes, like many other older versions, are represented by a drum. The front brake is a disc with a two-piston caliper.

Test drive HondaVT750C2, SuzukiVZ 800 Marauder

In this article we will not talk about multi-liter super heavyweights, fashionable among the bourgeoisie of Americanized youth, or “plastic bullets”, whose riders, covered in leather and carbon fiber, fly above the ground at the speed of sound in the fetal position... Let’s talk about the legendary, but undeservedly forgotten in our crazy everyday life in mid-sized choppers...

Honda VT750 Shadow Spirit (2001)

On duty, I often have to drive a variety of equipment, so over the past 4 months, various observations have accumulated - a carriage and a small cart. This time I had to ride not just a Honda Shadow, but a version that was eight kilograms lighter, with a 19" front wheel and the prefix “spirit,” which means “spirit.” Why “spirit”? Yes, because, according to the manufacturer, this model is as close in spirit as possible to classic choppers, although how true this is is not for me to judge.

The motorcycle is very popular and sold well in America, Europe and, of course, in its homeland, Japan. Therefore, there are a lot of tuning, as well as original and non-original spare parts for it at an affordable price.

Quite low in seat height (only 675 mm), the motorcycle is comfortable and easy to steer at low speeds; even with a tall passenger you can ride on city streets. The keys are inserted on the side, under the seat, and if the “lock” under the Harley turns out to be complete (start the engine - put the keys in your pocket!), then how can I avoid losing them while riding! I checked: they fit tightly in the lock, you can’t take them out. Still, the Japanese do not imitate the “American legend” in everything!

The legs are pleasantly slightly stretched forward, the engine is purring with direct currents! Here the American (previous owner) did his best: the “Vance&Hice” exhaust, when the throttles are opened, excites the area and makes passers-by look behind you. A fashion show in the evening city evokes a lyrical mood and relieves stress after a hard day; the 3-valve engine does not contribute to a sharp pick-up, but is generous with traction at the “bottoms”. During the day, in traffic, it is also quite convenient to maneuver, because the Spirit is much lighter and more compact than full-size ponto-launchers.

The mirrors are also in front of your eyes and in them you can often see the envious faces of the “canned food” drivers and their companions, pointing after them with a manicured finger. The direct-flow exhaust misleads many street racers and they try to encourage them to race at traffic lights. But I don’t give in to provocations - after all, the class of the device does not allow me to fall so low - this is not a chopper business, racing!

Although the engine does not disappoint with its dynamics, and the gearbox, as it should be from a Honda, is at its best: it works clearly, all shifts are easy and do not cause any distractions from driving.

The only distraction is the “tidy” located on the tank: in order to look at the small kilometer digitization of the speedometer, you periodically have to bow, taking your eyes off the road. Upon closer examination, the instrument panel on the tank is quite stingy: there is no fuel gauge, no indication of the gear engaged. But in bright sunlight, the diodes are clearly visible, as are all control indicators: neutral, oil pressure, turn signals and high beam. On the other hand, why bother: fill up the tank full and go...

When driving without a passenger, you can feel the stiffness of the suspension: apparently, a tribute to American fashion dictates its technical conditions to the “samurai”. This iron horse is not for our roads! But, if you don’t find fault and don’t fly, the suspension still copes well with uneven asphalt.

Brakes. Shadow Spirit has brakes!!! The front single-disc brake is very informative: having gotten used to it within ten minutes, I can easily measure the braking force, stopping the whole colossus at a traffic light. The rear brake has been undeservedly forgotten. Although it is a drum bike, it is still capable of surprising with its performance, and unlike a sportbike, here it should be used regularly. The V-twin also helps a lot with torque, and if you play too hard while shifting down, the rear wheel easily locks.

Comfortable seating position, wide steering wheel, easy handling and legendary engine vitality - all this makes the Honda VT750 Shadow Spirit a very tempting offer on the modern market. A practical and unpretentious chopper can easily replace your boring car and give you a lot of unforgettable memories of the summer...

Suzuki Marauder 800 (2000)

Marauders are paramilitary gangs that plunder battlefields and conquered fortified cities. This bike was presented to the public in 1996 and upon closer examination it becomes clear that it deviated from the classic style in many ways. It seems like a simple V-twin, but there are already four valves per cylinder. Rather, it is created in the American dragster style. Features of this style: a low, stretched silhouette, alloy wheels and an inverted front fork. You can’t expect superbike dynamics from the standard version, but the “Marauder” still “shoots” to “hundredth” in 6.1 seconds...

More powerful than the Honda, by five horsepower and lighter by almost twenty kilograms, it has a larger engine and its entire appearance emphasizes technical superiority over its opponent.

After the Honda, the seating position seems noticeably high, and the pegs are not so far forward, but overall the motorcycle is lighter, which is felt almost immediately. Without a passenger, it steers well, but it feels like the engine is “asking for fire.” At low revs, of course, there is traction, but the bulk of the torque is shifted towards mid (and higher) revs.

The seat is a Mustang tuner and is incredibly comfortable, as is the seating position.

The steering wheel also fits well in the hands, maneuvering does not cause much trouble. It’s just not recommended to seat tall passengers: the center of gravity here is located higher and the vehicle’s controllability at low speeds deteriorates sharply. Take only graceful girls! The speedometer is located better, but its too small graduation makes it strain your eyesight. Just like its opponent, Suzuki does not have “extra” instruments, only a minimum skip: an emergency oil pressure lamp, high beam and overheating indicator are located on the speedometer, and the neutral sensor and turn signal repeaters are on the console, immediately below the speedometer. In the sun, the light from the bulbs is almost invisible, but this is compensated by their considerable size.

Large round mirrors are like a panoramic TV: you can see everything very well. There's nothing to complain about. In comparison with the Shadow, the standard exhaust system “whispers” and even with a quick start, there’s no way you’ll be able to blow up the surroundings with a roar.

The engine itself vibrates less, yet the Honda “shakes” more, and this is felt while driving. The Suzuki company has taken care of those who like to “unscrew”, and the engine directly provokes aggressive driving and sets it in a different, not at all chopper, mood: now you yourself want to rip up motorists and even have a blast “to the fullest”! But... wow!!! This is still not a sportbike or a streetfighter, but an inverted fork, although it improves handling, still does not turn a heavy chopper into either the former or the latter. And the brakes are not the same... You won’t be surprised, although for the dynamics of this Suzuki it should be called not “Marauder”, but “Provocateur”!

At higher speeds, the wind gets pretty annoying, because on the previous motorcycle I rode slowly and didn’t feel any discomfort, but now I’m almost blown off the bike.

The gearbox works clearly, but it is far from the standard clarity of Honda; there is a certain sluggishness in switching. But, if you take off, like on a sportbike, without pressing the clutch, and accelerate like that, quickly shifting, then there will be no trace of the flakiness. Here the chassis is clearly more comfortable: the suspension easily absorbs all the bumps. And all this at a speed that is a couple of tens of kilometers higher than that of its competitor.

The brakes, unfortunately, will be weaker: even after getting used to the handle, you still won’t be able to get the same information content on it as with the Shadow. But engine braking fits well into an aggressive driving style, but you can’t forget about the rear brake! With slight overbraking, the rear wheel easily goes into skid, you need to be alert.

The result is a very controversial drag bike, and somehow one cannot dare to call it a mid-sized chopper, it looks so much like a real hooligan...

The price of the motorcycle, the availability of spare parts and ease of use make the Marauder a strong competitor in this class.

Both motorcycles are legendary and have left many good reviews about themselves, repeatedly confirming their reliability. It’s difficult to say who I would choose for daily driving: Honda or Suzuki, but each product has its own buyer: after all, everything ultimately depends on your character, driving style and mood...

Opinion: Sergey Kutsak

Height: 187 cm.

Weight: 67 kg.

I rode the entire last season on an old Suzuki Intruder 1500 and therefore did not expect anything special from this test drive. Medium-sized choppers in our country have a hard life, it just so happens: among the modern motorcycle movement: “show-off” is more expensive than money. Poor beginner chopper drivers routinely drive 400s, while the more respectable “uncles” buy large-capacity and clumsy “tractors” with an engine of at least eight hundred liters, or even two... As practice shows, neither the first nor the second can drive , do not listen well to other people’s advice and do not want to learn...

I sit on the Shadow, look around, the landing is classic chopper, arms are extended, legs are slightly forward, comfortable. The devices do not bother you with their abundance. Of the warning lamps, only the necessary ones: oil pressure, neutral indicator, high beam and turn indicator.

Nothing interferes with the view, since the speedometer is located on the tank. I insert the key into the lock (by the way, the ignition switch is located conveniently, on the left near the seat), and start the V-twin. With forward flow it sounds very juicy. Immediately after starting, you can recognize the Honda gearbox, which works the same on all models and pleases with easy and clear shifts. The engine, as befits a V-twin, pulls excellently from low to low. The acceleration is quite sufficient. The maximum torque in the mid-speed range does not provoke the engine to spin further.

I liked the very informative brakes. Even one front brake disc allows you to stop quickly enough. The rear drum brake is enough to lock the wheel.

Shadow holds the road well. At low speeds the bike steers well, but the front fork is not torsionally stiff enough.

I'm switching to a competitor from Suzuki. The difference is felt immediately. More comfortable seating due to a wider seat and closer footrests. The instruments, like those of the Honda, are not plentiful: a speedometer with three indicator lamps, and neutral and cornering lamps on the traverse. They are located more conveniently, almost in front of the eyes, making them much easier to read.

After the Honda, the engine seems “soft” and spins up more willingly: maximum power and torque are felt at higher revs. This provokes aggressive riding, despite the fact that this is not a sports bike. The gear shift lever is somewhat “wobbly”, the movement is not felt clearly, but this does not cause any difficulties with shifting gears.

The brakes stop the bike, but the front brake lacks feedback. The rear brake, like on the Spirit, is quite sufficient here, but the Marauder engine brakes a little worse, so you have to use the rear brake more often than on the Shadow.

The suspension on the Suzuki is softer, and the shock absorber and fork absorb the unevenness of our roads better, while it holds the road no worse than the Honda. When maneuvering at low speeds, the advantage of the “shifter” is immediately felt: its torsional rigidity is much higher. But it is more difficult to turn due to the smaller width of the steering wheel and the wide front wheel. Also, do not forget about the higher center of gravity, which also affects handling in the city. At cruising speeds, the Marauder handles very well.

The wind protection on both motorcycles is the same, that is, none. But during their normal use this is not noticed. Motorcycles (compared to their “bigger” brothers) handle much more pleasantly, and their efficiency is significantly better. Honda has undeniable advantages over Suzuki, these are brakes, gearbox and a lower center of gravity, but the Marauder takes its chassis and engine, and the landing, in my opinion, is more comfortable...

Honda Shadow VT750C

Traveling is a calm state of mind, and you can maintain it during the journey, no matter what happens. The Shadow VT750C will help with this with its brilliant style and pulsating energy. You will enjoy the ride. The beautiful liquid-cooled V-twin engine accelerates the bike with ease, while the clean, quiet exhaust purrs softly beneath you. The only view above the steering wheel is the wide, inviting road ahead, with no road signs or wires separating you from the horizon. Open the throttle and enjoy the unstoppable power. Could an easy life be any sweeter? With the Shadow, it doesn't matter where the road takes you, because with this bike it's always fun.

Honda's American Custom motorcycles have an excellent reputation for combining comfort, style, excellent performance and, at the same time, ease of riding for riders of all sizes, all at a very reasonable price. Not too big and not too small, the Shadow and Shadow Spirit provide plenty of power for quick acceleration, accompanied by the soothing sound of a mid-size V-twin engine. Huge power and lightning-fast acceleration are generally not the most significant demands of motorcyclists in this segment. Instead, classic motorcycles are designed to provide pure enjoyment on the open road, where you sit back, relax, contemplate and feel great. Their power manifests decisively and effortlessly. Their size, weight and proportions are ideal for a wide range of riders, while the low seat is attractive to smaller riders, especially girls.

The Shadow was introduced in 2004 as the latest version of this model - an attractive combination of classic and modern styles. The motorcycle's retro heritage is reflected in the deep-set fenders, fat tires, unusually low saddle-shaped seat and chrome front fork tubes that convey an attractive and timeless retro look. With a sufficient number of options, this model occupies a fairly high position among motorcycles with a similar engine size. But still, this model cannot become a full-fledged alternative to sports motorcycles with liter engines, but it is certainly more advantageous in terms of insurance and maintenance costs. The Shadow appeals to both new and experienced riders thanks to its comfort, long and low profile, ease of handling and low price. With enhanced desirability at its core, the Shadow, while improving performance and reducing emissions thanks to Honda's latest fuel injection technology, gains a host of significant enhancements that further enhance its exceptional sense of style, comfort and effortless handling. . For those who share a deep reverence for the experience of riding a motorcycle, the new Shadow provides the optimal way to meet the challenges of the road.

Power comes from a liquid-cooled 750cc V-twin engine, similar to the one currently used in the Shadow Spirit, allowing for quick acceleration with a light twist of the throttle. The power of the pulsating torque is felt directly through the seat. The shaft drive system ensures that the Shadow is as easy to maintain as it is to operate. The Shadow's appeal is also complemented by one of the lowest seat heights in the Cruiser class, allowing your foot to touch the ground easily, providing easy, secure handling that shorter drivers will appreciate. Based on a superior basic configuration, this model differs from the previous Shadow by having the following features:

  • New PGM-FI fuel injection system with HECS3 emission reduction system.
  • An attractive new dual muffler that accentuates the V-twin engine's strokes.
  • More comfortable steering wheel position.
  • Modified front disc brake.

Strongly recessed front and rear fenders highlight the distinctive look, and taper towards the lower edges to create an instantly recognizable look.
This look is further enhanced by chrome engine accents, a straight rear mudguard, new indicator panels, and even a license plate bezel, all highlighted by an attractive new split-stage muffler that runs rearward along the lower right side. The Shadow's classic, long, low, and sculpted lines are complemented by a massive pair of large, shielded front fork tubes that wrap around the wide-profile front tire and feature a shimmering metallic sheen. Mounted on shiny galvanized and rubber-coated spoked wheels, the Shadow's wide-profile tires provide another touch of retro Cruiser styling that seems to span decades.

New, more attractive and comfortable steering wheel

The new Shadow features an eye-catching new pair of cast and polished aluminum handlebar tubes mounted on a large cast aluminum fork upper triple clamp. Rubberized vertical tips effectively absorb most high-frequency vibrations felt at the handlebar. The handlebar itself has been offset compared to the previous Shadow model, the handlebars are now moved forward 16mm, they are 17mm higher and 26mm closer to each other for a more comfortable grip on the handlebar, which reduces wrist strain and improves comfort on long trips. This new position also provides a more natural arm angle for better maneuverability at low speeds.

New instrument panel design

As always, from a driver's perspective, the Shadow's wide, beautifully curved fuel tank plays a major role in the Shadow's design. The new fuel tank with a larger capacity of 14.6 liters (up from 14 liters) is combined with the improved efficiency of the new injection system and allows you to increase the driving distance without refueling the Shadow. On the upper edge of the tank, a large, attractive chrome speedometer unit is visible, integrating all the gauges and indicator lights, creating a streamlined new neo-retro design. A large diameter dial with a fully electronic speedometer is a signature feature of the new design, which provides clear visibility at cruising speeds while managing to remain out of line of sight when the driver's attention is focused on the road. The offset indicator lights include a new low fuel tank indicator that is mounted into the upper fork clamp where it is sure to be noticed.

Road lighting

The Shadow VTX headlight features a flawlessly polished oblong bullet-shaped shell that provides precise focus and outstanding illumination of the night road.

Individual sitting

The Shadow's wide, plush seat is one of the lowest and most comfortable in its class, giving drivers of all sizes and driving experience easy contact with the ground for confidence when stopping.

The responsive, liquid-cooled V-twin engine in the Shadow is based on a reliable old Honda engine. Essentially the same unit that has provided consistent, reliable power to all of Honda's 750cc V-twin cruiser motorcycles for many years, its single overhead camshaft cylinder heads feature dual spark plugs for greater combustion efficiency and instantaneous increasing traction. The long stroke crankshaft configuration combines with the extra crankshaft and generator mass to deliver an exhilarating feeling of pulsating power and allows peak torque to be achieved at lower rpm that enhances the feeling of engine power. The large diameter main shaft provides significant structural strength and guaranteed reliability.

Although the engine is liquid-cooled for excellent performance and reliability, its solid aluminum cylinders feature die-cast fins that create the look and feel of a traditional air-cooled engine, adding to the attractiveness and simplicity of the design.

New electronic fuel injection system PGM-FI

To achieve smooth and powerful performance, reliable starting, lower fuel consumption and cleaner Euro-3 performance, the new Shadow is equipped with Honda's latest PGM-FI electronic fuel injection system. The system includes throttle valves, which provide an idle air valve that precisely controls the volume of incoming air to maintain smooth idle performance. The fully digital fuel control system ensures low fuel consumption for even longer trips between refuelings.

With the new electronic fuel injection system, the Shadow's engine response is smooth and predictable. Its power comes through with a pleasant build-up of pulsating acceleration even from low revs, and the engine responds to the slightest throttle response with impressive power and plenty of torque. The increased performance of the engine in the low to mid speed range and the gearbox in combination with the driveshaft will provide the deepest pleasure of powerful acceleration at any speed.

New exhaust system

The eye-catching new split exhaust pipes extend back along the engine and frame, while the mesmerizing high-gloss, smoothly polished chrome enhances the bike's classic styling.

Reduced harmful emissions in accordance with Euro-3 standards

To reduce environmental harm, each Shadow tailpipe is equipped with its own oxygen sensor, which transmits information to the fuel injection system to precisely control emissions through the catalytic element. Both of these HECS3 components provide low emissions, which fully meets the strict EURO-3 emission limits while maintaining the characteristic sound of a V-twin engine.

The foundation of the well-balanced chassis is the lightweight, rigid twin steel frame first introduced in the 2007 Shadow Spirit and designed to provide a lower overall chassis height, larger seat sizes and larger fuel tank capacity. Also distinctive to the design is the molded seat beam support frame, which supports the large, classic, deep-set rear fender.

Inner feeling of power

The feeling of the pulsating engine powerfully picking up speed is an integral part of the ride. The new Shadow frame delivers that feeling, thanks to a gearbox with just enough initial vibration to feel the thrilling rumble of acceleration that never gets old.

Providing light, responsive handling while commanding attention with its rugged, sleek retro look, the massive new Shadow fork offers a full 116mm of axle travel to soften road imperfections for confident handling in all driving situations. The fork support tubes are held in place by a massive aluminum upper clamp, which creates a distinctive look and shimmering metal sheen that complements the imposing appearance of the chrome fork and headlight.

The rear suspension includes a pair of chrome-plated conventional shock absorbers supporting the rear driveline swingarm. The shock absorbers are angled forward for better performance, which helps maintain a soft ride and confident handling. Both rear shock absorbers have five stages of spring pre-adjustment to ensure the best setting for weight and road conditions.

Wide tires, chrome wheels and impressive brakes

For 2008, the front brake has moved from the left side of the wheel to the right to compensate for the weight of the new dual exhaust system and ensure optimal weight distribution and gyroscopic effect for even better steering and smooth, effortless control. Its responsive dual-piston hydraulic caliper grips the wide rotor with ceramic pads for confident braking.

Traditional main and auxiliary drum brakes provide fast braking. Even the foot-operated rear brake pedal contributes to the Shadow's simple, uncomplicated appearance, hidden from view behind the edge of the engine.

Honda Ignition Safety System (HISS)

The ignition switch is programmed to operate with only the two keys that originally come with each motorcycle. Because the engine is completely shut down at the heart of the digital ignition system, no other key can turn the lock or start the engine, and the motorcycle cannot be locked or stolen. The flashing red LED indicator on the tank-mounted instrument panel deters potential thieves with its signals.

The Black Widow's tapered fuel tank, shiny 19-inch front wheel and chunky rear bumper complement the cutting-edge design. Impressive dual exhaust pipes harmonize perfectly with the powerful engine. Sit comfortably on its low, dual gunfighter-style seat, rest your hands on the narrow, drag-racing handlebars, and plant your feet on the footrests. Now start the motorcycle. The Shadow is the perfect bike for cruising the boulevards and combing the streets for adventure. The Shadow's sophisticated design, comfort and performance not only maximize overall riding enjoyment, but also provide much-needed confidence for beginners while helping to develop driving skills more easily.
