The IZH Jupiter-5 motorcycle was produced by the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant from 1985 to 2008. In the USSR, it was a direct competitor to models from the famous Czech motorcycle manufacturer Java. Many of the cars produced are still on the roads of our country today. They are reliable and unpretentious, however, their technical characteristics and appearance no longer meet modern requirements. Tuning IZ Jupiter-5 helps correct the situation.
You need to redo it wisely
You can find a lot of materials on this topic on the Internet. But they should be treated with great caution. Some recommendations openly contradict common sense; the result of other alterations may be unpredictable. Let's try to help with advice to those who decided to do the tuning of Jupiter 5 with their own hands.
There are several directions for making changes to the design of the popular model:
- Correction of the appearance of the motorcycle.
- Modification or alteration of the suspension.
- Engine tuning.
Let's consider each of them separately.
Correction of motorcycle appearance
Changing your appearance can happen in different ways. Among the most common:
- Fairing installation.
- Replacing the fuel tank.
- Seat modification.
- Motorcycle painting.
Fairing installation. This is the first thing that many lovers of modifying the appearance of motorcycles undertake. Although it is possible to cope with such a task, it should be recognized that the development of such components is a complex task that requires specific skills. The enterprises employ entire groups of specialists engaged in the design of fairings.
Previously, plaza development methods were used for this, but today automatic design systems are used. Finished parts are blown in wind tunnels so that their behavior in air flow can be assessed.
A person who does not have specific skills, despite all his talents, will most likely receive a result of dubious quality. The surface of the fairing will be uneven, which is clearly visible in the 5 photos posted online illustrating Jupiter tuning. The aerodynamics of the motorcycle may not improve, but worsen. Take all this into account before you decide to start making and installing a fairing.
Replacing the fuel tank is a completely justified decision. But you shouldn’t try to make a complex part yourself. This is not an easy task even for enterprises with special technological equipment. It’s smarter and easier to choose a ready-made fuel tank from some other motorcycle model.
Seat modification. You can try to make a change to the standard structure by upholstering it with a new material like leather or a good substitute, and installing a new filler. But the original seat has a significant mass. To reduce the weight of the motorcycle, it makes sense, as in the case of the fuel tank, to select a part from other equipment.
Painting IZ Jupiter-5 is a good thing. Here you can let your imagination run wild. But the best results can be achieved if you know the laws of color combinations or consult with a professional designer. Otherwise, instead of a stylish combination of contrasting colors, you can end up with an eye-catching color scheme.
If you are interested in long-lasting paintwork, first apply a layer of high-quality primer and refuse to use nitro paint, preferring alkyd or polyurethane enamels.
history of Jupiter 5 (transition) and plans for restoration
this motorcycle began its history with one of my friends, let's call him friend No. 1, he bought it from his relative (one might say he gave it to him), drove it home, gave the engine life (but the motorcycle itself was destroyed in the trash (when I saw it, I was surprised how it rides )) he rode it for a short time, about a month, and gave it up because... he had U4 in much better condition. Then friend No. 2 brought his almost new but grief-stricken Yu5 of 1991 for repair to friend No. 1 (they couldn’t set the ignition) and left it for the winter. As spring approaches, friend No. 2 decided to change his Yu5. Without thinking twice, friend No. 1 agreed with friend No. 2 to swap engines, citing the fact that his engine was running, although it was ringing, but he didn’t understand what was wrong with it at all, and what difference does it make to him now, in short, they swapped the engines. having suffered with the engine, friend No. 1 abandoned it because he didn’t have time; his work just didn’t allow him to work on the motorcycle. Then, after some time, while drinking together, these two friends agreed on this motorcycle (in short, No. 1 gave it to No. 2 ( “just like he came and left” said friend No. 1). years. Then next spring the brother of friend No. 2 takes it for himself, like “he doesn’t need it anyway.” He disassembles it down to the screw eiiiiiiiii OPPA found a problem. In the past, when the engine had not yet been swapped, this engine was disassembled and overhauled and, due to inattention or the hands in the wrong place, did not tighten the crankshaft covers and during operation they untwisted and were broken by the flywheel Which is why there were problems with the ignition and the reason for selling the motorcycle. But since the brother of friend No. 2 did not know that the engines had been changed (that his engine had come back to him), he was shocked to learn that it was his engine and did not immediately believe that it was his.
After swearing at himself and admitting what an idiot he was, he nevertheless undertook to restore it (he didn’t come from where it was needed), another engine was found without tuning (it was lying with me and I didn’t need it), that is, without a gearbox, the piston was also not very good. It didn’t take long to restore the fuse; I wanted to go for a ride already. We buy a Yu3 and don’t even drive 1 km on it. breaks it and, not finding normal spare parts (or hands), shoves everything into the barn and leaves for another city to live (but didn’t want to sell). Arriving at the beginning of spring for a visit, sitting at the table (with cognac, of course), we started talking about these Jupiters, where we agreed on the price. So I bought myself as many as 2 Jupiters.
Having taken them, I set about restoring the Yu3 as it was running, but I’ll talk about it separately.
After looking at and riding on the above-mentioned Jupiter (with which the engine was changed, which, according to friend No. 1, rang a lot, which I didn’t notice at all and the owner of the motorcycle, the engine was even very good for all 5 points out of 5) I decided to collect myself 5 only in its original form as it was before.
I found the transition cladding and, having collected all the little details, decided to reassemble the engine from the beginning over the winter. Since the engine was after repair and had not been driven, I decided to change only the pistons and rings (possibly the crankcase halves will be changed), the pistons will have to be changed due to their type of boost (I’ll post all the photos later)
Well, I will write here about future plans and about the work done, too.
Refinement and modification of suspension
The original suspension of the IZH Jupiter-5 motorcycle is reliable and has good maintainability. It is not difficult to restore it, but better results can be obtained by making some changes to the design.
Installation of adjustable gas shock absorbers. Today on sale it is not difficult to find gas shock absorbers with suitable parameters that can be used in the design of the rear suspension for tuning IZ Jupiter-5. Ideally, you can improve ride comfort and improve the stability of the car on the highway.
Replacing the front fork. This is also possible, but most likely will require reworking its fastening.
Installing another handlebar is not prohibited if it does not worsen the ergonomics of the rider's seat.
Engine tuning
The two-cylinder two-stroke engine with a working volume of 347.6 cubic meters was installed on the motorcycle. see most often has air cooling. The number of models released in recent years of production that used liquid cooling is negligible. The power that the engine develops is 24 hp. With. – can be increased by making some simple modifications:
- Increase the compression ratio by removing about 1.5 mm from the adjacent plane of the block head. But this will require switching to fuel with an octane rating of AI-95 and making changes to the design of the crank mechanism. First of all, replacing the crankshaft bearings. You will also have to select spark plugs with a different heat rating.
- Replacing crankshaft bearings. There is an opinion that only high-quality imported bearings can cope with increased loads. In fact, domestic developers have installed bearings with a large margin of safety. If you manage to purchase high-quality Russian analogues, they will do the job perfectly. Trying to change the size of the crankshaft journals is simply harmful. The thickness of their hardening layer is small and when more than 1 mm is removed from the surface of the journal, the service life of the part will sharply decrease.
- Replacement or modification of pistons. The stock parts aren't that bad. Don't rush to look for a replacement for them. To increase power, it will be enough to lighten the pistons by removing casting flash and excess material from them. Parts should be carefully adjusted according to weight. It is desirable that the difference does not exceed hundredths of a gram. Such simple engine tuning will be more effective than installing a zero-resistance air filter or a direct-flow muffler. Although it is, of course, possible to install forward flow on IZ Jupiter-5.
- Installing another carburetor. If possible, it's worth shelling out for a good Mikuni carburetor. Don't go for a large diffuser size. The standard diameter of 32 mm will be quite sufficient. But it’s definitely worth removing the protrusions on the intake and exhaust manifolds and polishing the internal channels of these parts. This will not only provide an increase in power, but will also help reduce fuel consumption below five liters.
- Replacement of the ignition system. Installing BSZ on IZ Jupiter-5 only makes sense if you intend to use imported components. Most likely, the quality of domestic components will reduce all the advantages of the contactless ignition system to zero and the rework will not give the desired result.
Do not forget that increased power will improve the acceleration dynamics of the motorcycle, but will not provide a significant increase in speed. To increase speed, you will have to change the transmission gear ratios, selecting different sprockets for the gearbox and rear wheel.
Hello everyone, dear friends. So, absolutely by accident, this guest appeared in my hands. For me he is well known. Our turbulent youth is connected with this motorcycle, when we just got on an IZhi. This is the motorcycle of my good childhood friend, or rather his first and only motorcycle at the moment. How much this motorcycle has seen and how much it has experienced... oooh, when I remember it, I really want to relive that time. Well, I ask everyone to come under the “cut”. First, I'll tell you how it all started. I’m walking like this to the store and bang, a familiar figure is walking from afar. I took a closer look, and it’s Max! Has he really arrived after all? Previously, literally from the first years of our lives, we lived on the same street across the road; there were four of us friends who always stayed together. but life turned out in such a way that in 2006 I moved to another house, and Max moved to the other side of Russia - to Anadyr, oh how. And this is not very close. And after all these moves, he came only for the summer. Summer 2008. The holidays have arrived. Max has arrived. As I remember that day, I was sitting playing Heroes 4 when a motorcycle stopped at the house. I go out, and Max drove there. I was happy! We met and hugged. Word for word, he says, he bought a motorcycle from his grandfather for 8000 rubles with documents, we’ll ride now. And at that moment I had never driven Izh. And so we went to the field to learn how to ride, here is a photo from just that day, the day we bought the motorcycle.
And then our first rides began. We didn’t have rights then, of course. The mileage at the time of purchase was 2300 km, almost a new motorcycle! Since we drove without a license, there were also chases from law enforcement officers, then Jupiter always came to the rescue. Then we passed our license and began to drive without fear. Also, every summer we rode, had fun, took the girls for rides, and in general there was a lot of fun!!! At that time we didn’t know how to repair anything, at most change the oil, tighten the chain and change the pads, that’s all! Then, after 3 years of carefree driving, a dark streak began... Jupiter did not drive, the ignition went wrong every day with new contacts. (at that time, only disposable fists were sold in our village). No matter how much we suffered, out of despair Max put it in the garage and did not kick it out until that time. The motorcycle sat motionless for almost 7 years, my friend almost forgot about it and began to come less often, since his studies did not allow him to travel often. And when I saw the garage from afar, my heart bled from thoughts of how Jupiter was doing there... And then the idea came to my mind to buy it. And when, by chance, I met Max at the store, it was an absolutely amazing meeting)) We hadn’t seen each other for quite a long time... We met in the evening, and I somehow casually asked about the motorcycle, like if you were going to sell it. And I remember when we just got our first motorcycles, we promised to keep them for our children, apparently the brain hasn’t forgotten this)) And so Max says, if only he could fix it, who would do it... And I tell him that now I’m working on Izhami will take it without any problems. His eyes lit up... The next morning we came to the garage, which had already begun to rot... The bridge almost collapsed. They opened the doors, and there... The Phantom of the Opera.
How long did he stand here? They rolled him out onto the street and began loading him into a trailer, since he could no longer drive under his own power. Oh, one misfortune - some nonsense stole the saddle with the number! Freaks! Well, at least they didn’t get around to the other one anymore, and that’s good.
The mileage is funny at first glance, but during this time we beat it up a bit. It’s a pity for the old man, now it’s our turn to bring him back to strength.
We brought it home and wanted to have it after so many years. The revival quest was considered open)))
A huge layer of dust, cobwebs, oil... Eh, it feels like they found some kind of fossil))
Of course, they didn’t start poking right away. It was necessary to clean the entire power system and adjust the ignition.
There was enough dirt here) The gasket between the carburetor and the pipe turned into a ball of paper. Everything around was covered in oil, it was not even clear where it came from.
We started cleaning everything. Oh, and it’s not for nothing that we did this.
The float chamber was full of oil.
There is just a layer of white powder in the faucet sump.
We adjusted the ignition and everything was ready! Started with 3 kicks. Oh, we haven’t heard it work for a long time... now it was clear that there was a knock in the cylinders, the work was a little unstable. In general, cap. repairs are guaranteed. They started it up, remembered its work and began to prepare for analysis.
I removed the tank and the different coils immediately caught my eye.
Now according to the thumbnail diagram)) I start from the front.
I am pleased that the motorcycle is complete and has all the original parts; this makes life very easy and eliminates long searches.
Well, that's it, the front is almost disassembled. The fork, of course, is broken, but the feathers are not bent or rusty.
The fork, of course, is broken, but the feathers are not bent or rusty. They would have rusted under a layer of oil)) I even remember where we pierced the fork. When we went for a swim one summer, we didn’t notice, baaah, and everything, glasses began to leak.
Now you can remove the engine.
When I started to unscrew it, it turned out that the front fastenings were not properly tightened. And when I removed the right cover, the drive star was slack, and the chain was very loose.
Well, that's it, get off the frame)) We'll treat you soon.
There is very little left. Somehow I quickly dismantled everything... Well, how long did it take to skillfully) And at the back there are 3 more engines from other Jupiters. Interesting season. That year they sent almost only planets and 2 Jupiters, but now, on the contrary, only Jupiters and 1 planet. Now there are 5 engines from Jupiter in the garage, not including this one, and another one at the entrance from Syktyvkar. Wow.
Oh, the corrugation is over... There is dirt everywhere again, rust is starting to come out in some places.
The shock absorbers are worn out and the cups are a little rusty. In general, the idea came up to submit some parts for chemical metallization to give them a new look. There are not many such parts, but when the motorcycle is assembled with them, the look will immediately change. And it’s cheaper than having it galvanized.
There is no wiring, now mere trifles remain. I'm glad that the frame is intact and there is no need to weld anything anywhere. Otherwise, anything can happen.
But the problem is a loose rear wheel. Under strange circumstances, there was no bushing that fits into the retaining bolt of the decorative trim. There is no seal or bushing here...
We put everything we removed into separate boxes. Wiring and everything connected to it in one box, all the black small parts in another. And the same with fasteners and other little things.
The disassembly process is complete. Everything is somehow fast this time. Instantly, the motorcycle became a disassembled construction kit and found a temporary home.
So here we have another project for the winter, and now there are already 2 of them. And what is the second one? I'll tell you a little later. I can’t even put into words how glad I am that the motorcycle came to me and will be restored. It is almost as dear to me as my first motorcycle. After all, these are the ones we used to ride on and they never let us down. Well, good luck to us)) At the moment, all the parts are being prepared for painting and soon the assembly of the chassis, reassembly of shock absorbers and forks, as well as engine repair will begin - all this will be discussed in the next part.
On this note, I say goodbye to you, everyone can skate the season without any problems and put their horses into hibernation. See you soon)))
Not tuning, but restoration
However, modernization is not the only way for owners of the popular model. After all, the age of many motorcycles has already exceeded two decades, which means that they can already be classified as rare. Restoring IZ Jupiter-5, restoring it and bringing it to its original state is also quite justified.
A legendary motorcycle that looks like it just rolled off the assembly line yesterday will attract no less attention than the tuned version. It’s just that how to properly restore equipment by performing qualified repairs often turns out to be much more difficult than remodeling it to your taste.

Restoring the IZH Planeta-5 motorcycle: detailed photos and description of the motorcycle repair.
Hi all! I haven’t posted anything for a long time, and now the opportunity has come to please me with another project. On our agenda is Planet 5. An ordinary ordinary five, without any additional equipment. At first it all started with the engine, there was no intention of making the motorcycle itself, but fate turned out differently. Here we go!
Vidocq is tired... What to do, but without the “collective farm”. The owner said that the motorcycle had been standing almost in the open air for about 6 years. And this phrase immediately made it clear that rust had begun to seriously overtake him.
We remove everything remaining on the frame. It was not easy, everything was covered in dirt and rust, which is why some of the bolts had to be cut with a grinder.
The repair began with the engine. The problem was a cracked sleeve, second gear falling out and noise in the engine, plus the seat for the guide shaft of the shift fork was worn out and the shaft was hanging out.
So, the motorcycle is disassembled and is waiting for a trip to sandblasting. At this time, we will look for donor spare parts and purchase new ones that are necessary. This is how another IL begins to transform after many years of inactivity.
I already liked this planet because most of the spare parts there are still original, the owners didn’t particularly farm it or kill it, which will save time. And I haven’t seen a color like this often. Most often they were red. And here is a little blue one, special!
After painting.
Shock absorber repair.
Well, everything is ready for assembly. New silent blocks, seals, glasses. Everything is clean, washed, blown off from dirt. Let's start collecting.
We install glove compartments with updated rubber bands. We immediately mount the fender liner together with them. The motorcycle is slowly beginning to revive.
I also finally found the rear casing complete with the star. The old casing was broken and the sprocket teeth were eaten away. And here everything was better, but everything had to be disassembled, cleaned, painted, and the pads and bearings had to be changed.
Assembly of the motorcycle continues. The space under the tank is filled with everything necessary: a coil, a turn relay. They even purchased vibration dampers for the engine so that everything would be fine.
Installed the trim on the motorcycle. Looks like a handsome guy.
And now, the project can be considered completed, Izh Planet-5 has been restored!
