Well, friends. Here is a bad person who promised good posts, I’m back and I promise to improve. There will be a lot of text and pictures, since here is a brief history of my mutation into a sofa endurist and bringing the old necrocratic Honda XR250 into more or less decent shape. This is what the Honda looked like at the time of purchase:

She had clearly seen some shit in her life, which is not very surprising for a twenty-year-old enduropean, but she rode quite cheerfully. Almost all electronics, instrument panel and gauges worked. At that time, there were no other suitable options for me within the next 150 km, although I had already looked and tested the Kawasaki Super Sherpa and Yamaha TTR, and therefore decided to take it almost without looking - I wanted my own motorcycle too much, and the license I had just received and warm March provoked not the most thoughtful actions.

After driving around the city and the first test enduro ride (in the nearby fields, of course), some excessive consumption of gasoline was noticed; a little later we found out that the Honda consumes about 6.5 liters per hundred, which hinted at problems with the CPG or overflowing carburetor - usually in In this mode, the flow rate should be around 5 liters.

A couple of times we organized full-fledged enduro rides, the first of which turned into a wild mud mess after a series of downpours and jeepers finally finished off what semblance of a road was left.

(In the wild mountain forests of the Krasnodar region there are many jackals, so the quality is what it is)

PS - My friend’s “Teter” is the second “victim” in our trip.

Then there was the first “long-distance” trip in my life - 450 km to Crimea and the next day returning back. Then this distance seemed really huge, taking into account the lack of experience in driving on the highway (mountains don’t count, and the city doesn’t give such a feeling, it seems to me) and the completely inappropriate type of equipment and tires (my partner and I were on “toothy” off-road tires) .

(The way back, entering Kerch. My partner had something wrong with the clamp that secured the muffler, because of which part of the plastic was burned. “It was burnt,” so to speak. While it is being repaired, I help in every possible way, arrange a small photo shoot for my Honda and relax along the way. )

We actually drove for a VERY long time, because it so happened that instead of leaving at least at noon (my partner that day had to receive category A in the morning), we left after 7 pm, having spent about 12 hours at that time, either on the road or just in the heat while waiting for a driving test and then a replacement driver's license. At around 4 am we were near Feodosia, and there fatigue made itself felt. I managed to fall asleep while driving a motorcycle. Fortunately, it was a microsleep (for 3-5 seconds), but during this time I managed to move out of my lane into oncoming traffic, where miraculously there was no one at that moment. This became the very call that was mortally dangerous to ignore, so I drove to the nearest beach, threw my sleeping bag off the trunk and went to bed for about an hour. This rest was enough to return to a more or less adequate state and get to Simferopol.

The purpose of the trip was a bike festival in Sevastopol, where we left late in the evening, but almost immediately it began to rain - we didn’t have time to travel even 20 km, because of which we decided to return and not tempt fate. The next morning we set out on the way back (to Krasnodar), which was just as long and boring. Basically, except for my stupid fall at night (because of the rain, I didn’t notice the hole in the turn, where I hit with my front wheel and, as a result, fell on my side on an empty road at a speed of less than 20 km/h).

After a trip to Crimea, it was decided to work on Honda more closely, since before that it was purely “cosmetics”. Actually, this is what happened:

Front view, the main headlight is installed stock - so that there are no problems with the traffic police when registering (since the photo was taken at the end of the season before the sale). Side view.

Analysis of the engine showed a damaged piston and fairly large gaps in the cylinder, although for short trips this was not a problem. It didn’t consume any oil, and all that remained was to monitor the fuel - with a tank capacity of 9 liters, it was enough for ~150 km. If you have a can of gasoline that has settled on the trunk, it is quite tolerable. Since this was fraught with quite large expenses and downtime of the motorcycle in the service center where the bike was being serviced at that time, I decided to postpone it. Looking ahead, I will say that I never got around to working on the engine, because at the end of the season, my work colleague bought this Honda - and for almost a season and a half (not counting a couple of summer trips) it has been sitting in the garage awaiting repair of the CPG.

In principle, I almost didn’t touch the technical part and focused more on bringing the motorcycle into visual order so that it would be like a universal daily transport. I’ll say right away that this didn’t work out - you should either use an endurik for enduro and not bother about its appearance, or put it on road tires and ride in the city or, at most, on light off-road conditions, without getting into any mud and without falling.

In total, during the year of ownership the following was purchased and installed: - Seat cover (found only on ebay) - 4200 rubles including reupholstery. — Grips — 600 rub. — Universal round mirrors — 1200 rub. — Clutch and brake machines from aliexpress — 3445 rub. (Moreover, if the quality of the clutch machine was more or less acceptable, then the rubber gaskets in the brake reservoir were eaten up in 2 days, which is why I found myself in a very funny situation: in a “box” between trucks at a speed of ~70 km/h and without a front brake at all. Of course, I returned part of the money for them through a dispute, but it was still very unpleasant.) - Steering wheel protection - 2780 rubles. (In my opinion, this is one of the most useful purchases, because it saved my hands two or three times when I fell, plus the clutch and brake handles survived, which already justified the price of protection.) — Steering wheel — 1500 rubles. — A set of bolts for plastic in the color of the motorcycle — 675 RUR. (The most useless purchase - the quality of the Chinese metal is complete crap, literally one or two cycles of “unscrewing and tightening” and the edges were erased so much that instead of a hole for a hexagon, you got an almost perfectly round hole.) - RIF LED headlights - 5000 rubles. (20w - instead of the standard headlight, and 2x10w as additional “lights” that can be connected separately. The headlights installed very easily - there was no need to cut the plastic of the muzzle, since the Reef headlight was almost the same dimensions as the original one. Except perhaps a bracket was needed, which was made from a pair of steel strips. For enduro, the light turned out to be excellent, but since these are Jeeper diode headlights, they illuminate EVERYTHING, no focusing, and even if you lower the headlight as low as possible, then every second person blinked on the track anyway distant.) — Trunk — 3800r. (There is hardly any need for comments about how necessary a trunk is for enduro.) - Graphics - 7000 rubles in total. (On the XR forum I was lucky to find a complete set of layouts for the plotter, which allowed me to print everything I needed to wrap the motorcycle in the color I needed.)

Besides:

  • Spark plug replaced;
  • Brake fluid and oil replaced;
  • A new gearshift foot was installed instead of the worn one that came with the motorcycle;
  • Brake pads replaced;
  • The electrics were improved, the carburetor was cleaned and the valve clearances were adjusted, the timing chain and valve stem seals were replaced;
  • Battery replaced;
  • The tires were replaced (at the time of purchase there was a Dunlop MX51 with about 50% of the tread remaining, but since I thought of driving along the highway to Crimea and back (~1000 km) on off-road tires, it was almost completely consumed. In the end I installed the tougher MX71 );
  • An LED strip was inserted into the rear turn signals, which began to serve as side lights. Very useful at night in the city.

Bottom line: this was my first motorcycle, which gave me a HUGE experience both in terms of control and maintenance, since before that I, in fact, had nothing to do with equipment at all. There were a lot of mistakes, even starting from the fact that I bought almost the first option I came across and ended up investing almost half of its original cost in repairs and tuning.

But on the other hand, it's just money. And I sometimes appease the toad that strangles me with the thought that in this way I “bought” a lot of very useful knowledge and skills.

Several trips and a year of riding in the city showed that enduro as a daily motorcycle is not an option, and with a pure soul I sold the Honda, taking a road bike to replace it - a Yamaha XJR 400.
