IZH Planet 2 - technical specifications, description of the motorcycle

Russian motorcyclesIZH motorcycles

More than forty years have passed since the release of the last IZH Planet 2, and motorcycles of this model are still cruising the roads of the former USSR.

Moreover, they are well preserved and are in great demand, especially among creative restoration or tuning enthusiasts and motorcycle fans.

The average road bike, called Planet 2, was produced for six years (1965 - 1971).

Over the years, just under 250 thousand copies were produced .

The second generation of the Planet family was intended for driving on a variety of roads.

The car gained particular popularity among domestic hunters, mushroom pickers, fishermen, as well as residents of rural areas, since it was difficult to find an alternative.

Specifications

The middle class of the IZH Planet 2 model is confirmed by both the engine characteristics and the overall dimensions of the bike, which are:

  • Length - 213.0 cm;
  • Width - 78.0 cm;
  • Height - 102.5 cm;
  • Base - 143.0 cm;
  • Ground clearance - 13.5 cm.

The dry weight of the motorcycle is 155 kilograms, and the wheel size is 3.25-19.

Design features

At one time, IZH Planet 2 had very modern parameters.

The “heart” of the motorcycle was a two-stroke single-cylinder 346 cc air-cooled engine, the power of which reached 15 horsepower (4.2-4.6 thousand rpm).

This unit runs on a fuel mixture of gasoline and oil, which comes by gravity from an 18-liter tank.

The brake system is drum. The gearbox is a two-way, four-speed design that transmits rotation to the rear wheel via a chain.

The softness of movement is ensured by the original shock absorption system:

  • The front fork is telescopic with a spring-hydraulic shock absorber;
  • The rear fork is pendulum with a hydraulic shock absorber.

As already mentioned, the Planet 2 frame is an all-metal tubular structure.

The deep fenders of the motorcycle are also made of metal, since plastic was practically not used then.

Detailed information about the IZH Planet 2 power unit can be found in the following table.

Design and reliability

IZH Planet 2, as evidenced by the number in the model name, became the second motorcycle in the Izhevsk Planet series.

It differs from the “ancestor” of the family in greater comfort and power of the power unit , as well as an updated, more modern (for that period of time) design.

Thus, Planet 2 received a signature paint job, a muffler and wheel rims covered with decorative chrome, a polished crankcase cover, as well as brake covers and a carburetor casing with a layer of hammer enamel.

The motorcycle seat has become wider and more comfortable. Its finishing is made of colored textinite.

The second generation model is designed in such a way that its repair does not require special or specific tools , conditions or equipment.

The mechanics are quite simple and straightforward , and spare parts are produced in abundance.

IZh Planet 2 owes its excellent cross-country characteristics to good traction at low speeds, high suspension and competent gearbox design.

Among other things, the owners of the bike unanimously declare the highest reliability of the engine and its amazing durability. This is confirmed by the manufacturer, who provided a warranty for a mileage of 15 thousand kilometers or a year and a half of operation.

Tuning options

This motorcycle provides great opportunities for modifications. As a rule, tuning an Izh motorcycle concerns the following components:

  • Engine;
  • Ignition;
  • Gear box;
  • External tuning.

In general, Izh Planet 4 12 volts is quite simple. This allows even less experienced craftsmen to remake it. First, you need to determine what you want to get in the end. In many cases, modifications are made to all components of the motorcycle. But, this is quite labor-intensive.

It is often easier to simply rework one or two nodes that will give you the desired effect. The most popular is engine tuning. Also, in many cases, owners change the equipment visually, making it almost unrecognizable.

Conditions of repair and operation

The motorcycle is designed in such a way that its repair does not require special conditions, tools or equipment. It is advisable, but not necessary, to have when assembling the engine and setting the ignition:

  • solvent;
  • tapping flathead screwdriver;
  • metal brush;
  • union heads;
  • knob;
  • compression gauge;
  • micrometer;
  • multimeter;
  • a blowtorch (ideally, it is with its help that fingers are inserted into new pistons);
  • scan at 14, etc.

It would seem that not every garage has a list of devices and tools. In fact, all of the above can be replaced with conventional tools. For example, press in the fingers using a bolt of the appropriate diameter and nut, and ring the wires or any electrical appliances with a 12-volt light bulb.

Repair and tuning

Both the IZH Planet 5 engine, the transmission, and its chassis are truly distinguished by their high maintainability. If the bike you received has spent many years in caring hands, there will most likely be no problems with it, especially if it is serviced on time. But for careless owners, Soviet motorcycles quickly break down.

Repair

Most often minor damage occurs. The ignition fails, the electrics begin to take on a life of their own, the speedometer cable breaks, the light bulbs in the headlights and turn signals burn out. The main components are distinguished by good reliability, even the engine, despite the fact that 2-stroke engines cannot boast of a significant resource.

Spare parts

Despite the fact that this model was discontinued a long time ago, spare parts for the IZH Planet 5 motorcycle are still not difficult to find. The easiest way is to look for the necessary hardware at flea markets and on the Internet, since Avito always has plenty of offers. Prices depend on the greed of a particular seller, but in general everything is cheap.

Tuning

Since the vast majority of IZH Planet 5 units that are still running live in rural areas, their tuning is usually unique. Most often it comes down to buying all sorts of lights and stickers on Aliexpress and then turning the unfortunate motorcycle into who knows what. Adding horsepower to an engine is the dream of every first-time “tuner,” but to do this, it’s easier to change the bike itself. There are, of course, craftsmen who manually forge new valves and bore piston valves, but this is the case when the game is not worth the candle.

Estimated cost

For obvious reasons, it is almost impossible to purchase a brand new IZH Planet 2 motorcycle, but it is quite possible to buy an old machine with a solid mileage or a well-restored bike with modern analogue parts.
On the Russian secondary car market, this model (depending on condition) is offered at a price from 10,000 to 30,000 rubles.

The cost depends on the condition, year of manufacture and mileage of the motorcycle.

Jupiter has 12 more satellites

Astronomers from the Carnegie Institution “added” another 12 satellites to Jupiter. They were discovered in the spring of 2021. It took about a year to double-check the observation data. Now there is no doubt left - satellites really exist, including one very strange one. What the researchers described on the Phys.org portal in the material Jupiter's moon count reaches 79, including tiny “oddball”.

The Carnegie astronomers were led by Scott S. Sheppard. Together with his colleagues - Dave Tholen from the University of Hawaii and Chad Trujillo from Northern Arizona University - they were looking for the so-called Planet 9 or Planet X, as it is also called. This rather large and so far “elusive” celestial body seems to be located behind Pluto. According to all calculations, it should be there somewhere. All that remains is to see it with your own eyes - through a telescope, of course. What, in fact, astronomers dreamed of. Jupiter just happened to be in sight—very fortunately.

12 new satellites of Jupiter.

As a result, instead of Planet 9, it was possible to discern 12 previously unknown satellites of Jupiter. Using observational data, their orbits were calculated by Gareth Williams of the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center.

Jupiter's moons rotate in different directions.

The size of the discovered “new” satellites is from 1 to 3 kilometers in diameter. 9 of them are retrograde, that is, they move in orbit against the rotation of Jupiter itself. The remaining ones are prograde, moving in the direction of Jupiter’s rotation. But one of them is very strange - prograde, but located among the retrograde ones. Valetudo - that's what they called him.

Scientists predict: sooner or later this “oppositionist” will collide with some oncoming satellite. Both will crumble into dust and possibly form a ring around Jupiter - much like Saturn.

Valetudo is the smallest of the currently known satellites of Jupiter, its diameter is less than a kilometer. Scientists believe that the “crumb” broke away from a larger celestial body. Or it was captured by arriving from the outside - for example, from the asteroid belt. Or from the Kuiper belt.

Two consecutive images of the Valetudo satellite: it is clear that it has shifted relative to other objects.

"KOMSOPRK REFERENCE"

Planet 9 - where is it?

There are currently 8 planets in the solar system - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus. Pluto has not been considered a planet since 2006—it’s too small.

Suspicions that there is another planet - the ninth - also known as Planet X, also known as Planet 9 - appeared in 2014. Then the heroes of the current discovery - Chad Trujillo and Scott Sheppard - discovered on the outskirts of the solar system, far beyond Pluto, an object that was moving somehow anomalously. It was as if he was being influenced by some massive celestial body. Trujillo and Sheppard suggested that this celestial body is a still unknown planet that is larger than Earth.

Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena were about to refute their colleagues. But it turned out differently. By 2021, they have analyzed the movement of 13 so-called minor planets, whose orbits are beyond the orbit of Pluto. And they made sure: their trajectories were also influenced by some very heavy body. Computer modeling has demonstrated that an object that is approximately 10 times heavier than the Earth is affected. It moves along a highly elongated orbit, sometimes approaching the Sun by 200 astronomical units, sometimes moving away by 1200. An astronomical unit is the distance from the Earth to the Sun. That is, the object is very distant. It takes more than 15 thousand years to fly around our star.

Trajectories of movement of minor planets and the expected trajectory of Planet 9.

Astronomers began searching for Planet 9. They are still searching, not knowing where it is now. It can be at any point in its elongated orbit.

Planet 9 is considered dangerous. Not because it might collide with the Earth, as conspiracy theorists believe. And the fact that, flying in the area of the Kuiper belt - clusters of giant rock and ice blocks located on the outskirts of the Solar system, it can “knock out” them and direct them towards our planet. And this threatens with comet bombardment.

Juicy news.

Reviews of the motorcycle “Izh Planeta-2”

Mostly, the owners of this motorcycle belong to the “over 40” category. Of course, not all, but most of them were born and raised in the USSR, so they still own the technology of those times.

Modern youth inherit or buy similar models for restoration. Some examples of modernized motorcycles from the USSR can compete with modern bikes in their technical characteristics and appearance.

As a rule, motorcycle owners claim the reliability and simplicity of the unit. Compared to more modern models "Planet-4" or even more so "Jupiter-4", the single-cylinder "Izh" 2nd generation is particularly durable. Indeed, during the production of the latter there was no great competition and pursuit of power.

Main advantages

Motorcycles IZH Jupiter -5 were quite simple in design and did not require large maintenance costs. Today there are many who want to criticize this technique without regard to the times, but the model was in great demand among the population. She is not forgotten even now. On the secondary market only, on Avito websites, more than 2,000 units of equipment are offered for sale every day. The main reasons for its popularity are:

  • Maintainability and simplicity of design.
  • The presence of a semi-automatic clutch.
  • Smooth ride, comfortable movement.
  • Can be used with or without a side trailer.
  • Good car dynamics without a side trailer.
  • Durable welded tubular frame.
  • Reliable and simple gearbox.
  • Powerful alternator, good light.
  • Confident engine starting in any weather conditions.

This is not an exhaustive list of the outstanding qualities of the machine.

The motorcycle has the highest level of maintainability. The shortage of spare parts of that time has given way to their abundance today. Any components can be purchased through online stores or in markets at affordable prices. With a small set of tools, a motorcycle of the simplest design can easily be rebuilt on the road. Replacing parts of the cylinder-piston group can be done without any problems directly in the field. More complex repairs involving removal and complete disassembly of the engine are possible in a garage without the involvement of large specialists or special tools.

The motorcycle is equipped with a semi-automatic clutch, which greatly facilitates the driver’s work. Gear shifting is possible without squeezing the clutch lever on the steering wheel. The clutch release mechanism is activated automatically when you press the gear shift foot. Before pressing the foot, it is advisable to release the gas - the switching will occur smoothly, without jerking the transmission. No other domestic motorcycle has such a system.

The machine is characterized by a smooth ride in single mode and with a side trailer. Riding a well-maintained motorcycle is a pleasure. The driver's position is comfortable and ergonomic. The passenger in the side trailer feels comfortable, protected from the flow of oncoming air and dust by a high transparent plastic reflector and a soft, durable awning made of leatherette. The trailer wheel has a spring-hydraulic shock absorber, which effectively absorbs uneven road surfaces.

A motorcycle with the index Izh Jupiter-5K-01 can be used with or without a side trailer. Operation of a motorcycle with a trailer is possible only if there is a corresponding mark in the technical passport when registering with the traffic police. When installing a trailer, the final drive gear ratio is changed by installing a smaller diameter drive sprocket with 16 teeth. At the same time, the engine traction force increases significantly due to an increase in the number of crankshaft revolutions. A 19-tooth drive sprocket is installed on a single motorcycle, increasing the speed capabilities of the motorcycle.

Without a side trailer, the machine has good dynamic capabilities. The two-cylinder engine quickly picks up speed and is capable of accelerating the car from a parking lot to 100 km/h in 12 seconds. This figure is 0.5-1.0 seconds better than that of the most advanced car at that time, the VAZ-2109, or the popular imported Java-350 motorcycle.

The motorcycle is assembled on a durable tubular frame, which is simply impossible to damage if used correctly. The side trailer has its own, no less durable frame, made of thick-walled steel pipes.

The gearbox is assembled in the same housing with the engine and has its own crankcase compartment. The unit is powerful, reliable, always working without problems throughout the entire service life of the motorcycle. There is an inspection hatch on the side cover of the clutch drive mechanism to check the oil level in the clutch housing and gearbox.

Electrical equipment operates from a powerful modern 12 V alternating current generator. Alternating current is converted to direct current by a diode bridge. All old problems associated with the operation of 6-volt DC generators installed on previous machines have been eliminated. The electrical system has become significantly more reliable. The headlight has halogen optics, which produces a fairly powerful stream of light.

The engine starts reliably at any time of the year due to the installation of an emergency start system that supports starting with a weakly charged battery.

Differences by year of production

Changes were constantly made to the design of the motorcycle. Some were associated with the desire to improve technology. Others were caused by demands from industry management to reduce production costs. Raising the price of Izh Planet Sport 350 above 1000 rubles was not allowed by the prices set for competitors’ products.

For example, JAWA 350/634 cost 1080 rubles, and CZ-350 – 980 rubles. To make the picture clearer, we will indicate the main changes, dividing them by year:

  • 1975 The front fork was lengthened by 2.5 mm, changing the size of the corrugations installed on it and the upper yoke. Instead of a cylinder head with fan fins, the Izh Planet Sport engine receives a GC with more conventional, linearly arranged cooling fins. Switches and a number of electrical components, although they remained imported, were from another manufacturer. The Mikuni AEX carburetor was gradually replaced by the Mikuni VM32-89 carburetor. The thickness of the spokes was increased (from 3.5 to 4 mm) and the wall thickness of the front brake drum.
  • 1976 Instead of foreign-made headlights, they use domestic ones, FG137. The situation is similar with the speedometer. If previously the motorcycle was equipped with a part from Pannonia T5, now it is being replaced by the domestic modification SP-102. Shock absorbers no longer have top covers. The end of the muffler pipe is bent upward. The design and fins of the cylinder are slightly changed.
  • 1977 The motorcycle is fully equipped with domestic outdoor lighting devices. The shape of the rear wing changes. The design of the engine crankcase is changing. Specifically, the mounting points, since the power unit begins to be rigidly attached to the frame, abandoning the shock-absorbing rubber bushings. The new type air filter now occupies the entire seat space, which is why the voltage regulator relay is moved under the fuel tank. The main characteristics of Izh Sport remain at the same level.
  • 1978 The Mikuni carburetor gives way to the domestic model K62M. Of the imported electrics, only Japanese turn signals remain. An anti-theft lock appears.
  • 1979 Replacement of the SP102 speedometer with SP102A and Japanese turn signals with domestic ones (only for the domestic market). The pendulum is extended by 480 mm. Accordingly, the base of the motorcycle increases (up to 1440 mm) and its overall length (up to 2150 mm). The weight of the Izh Sport also increases, reaching 155 kg in this modification.
  • 1980 The speedometer cable and gearbox are made not to fit a blade, as before, but to fit a square. The intake design is slightly modified. The lids of tool boxes now feature aluminum nameplates rather than stickers.

During the production process, the Izh Planet Sport motorcycle underwent such a significant number of changes that this could not but affect its characteristics. The installation of a domestically produced carburetor led to a noticeable deterioration in the technical characteristics of the engine. Power decreased from 32 to 28 hp. With.

The adjustments made to the design are also associated with discrepancies in the sources answering the question of how much the Izh Planet Sport weighs. Dry mass indicators range from 135 to 155 kg. It is not surprising that fans of two-wheeled vehicles especially value cars from the first years of production.

They are better manufactured and equipped, and have higher dynamic characteristics. At the end of production, the Izh Planet Sport passport indicated the speed was not 140, but only 135 km/h. Fuel consumption has increased.

Once upon a time, IZH Planet was a symbol of motorcycling in the USSR. Now, this device is becoming less and less common on the roads. It's a pity. After all, with basic care, it is as reliable as a real Japanese. This article is about personal experience of more than 20,000 km on the Planet for those who want to operate this device like a motorcycle, and not like a museum piece. The article will have two parts (1) about technology (2) about operation. So, let's begin…

Part 1 – Technique

Planet is one of the simplest and most reliable devices produced in the USSR. Malfunctions, as a rule, are a consequence of gross violations of basic operating rules. Unfortunately, many people receive these motorcycles already in a heavily damaged condition and, even worse, with collective farm modifications, so it is often impossible for a new and inexperienced owner to determine the acquired defects from their characteristic features.

Update No. 4 In my case, Planet 2, produced in 1970, fell into my hands in 2000 as an inheritance from my grandfather and before that it had been collecting dust for about 15 years in disassembly. The actual mileage to me is estimated to be 40,000-50,000 km (with a sidecar) since the speedometer did not work. On this far from new vehicle, after repainting and reassembly (the chrome of the silencers and wheels was not restored due to cost), for 15 years and more than 20,000 km of my mileage, nothing has broken except the number plate, which was protected from vibrations.

So, the Planet (modifications 1,2,3,4,5) has fallen into your hands, how to make it work well:

1. Power system: be sure to install a fine fuel filter. A simple large filter from a Zhiguli (don’t take a small “motorcycle” one - it doesn’t have enough throughput). It is advisable to avoid gas hose loops according to the principle “the shorter the hose, the better” (see Fig. 1) - otherwise there will be air locks. We install the filter once and forget where the carburetor is located. For one thing, I recommend cleaning the sump of the gas tap. The oil must be two-stroke 1:50 - do not skimp and do not use motor oil (although according to the instructions it is permissible). Protects against the need to clean carbon deposits from under the head every 2000 km. The K-36I carburetor, after installing the fuel filter, did not require cleaning and adjustment even once over 20,000. The only problem identified was wear on the U-shaped brass spool. A groove is formed that prevents the spool from descending completely. Jammed gas is not a good thing. Therefore, I recommend monitoring and changing it every 15,000 km. Check that there was a pin under the spool cover during the break-in period that limits the gas flow; break it off if for some reason it remains. And we also check whether the type of carburetor generally corresponds to this modification of the Planet - there are known cases of installing carbs “from Java” and the like. If so, replace it with your native one.

2. Carburetor covers and spacer bolt: this is the main “life hack” of the Planet. From the factory, IZhi have aluminum caps covering the carburetor. Stupidly they throw it out. Put it back. There are two bonuses: (a.) A multiple reduction in vibrations at speeds over 80 km/h (those who have ridden it know what kind of vibrator this bike is) due to the 3rd point of attachment of the engine to the frame through a spacer bolt (see Fig. 1) ( b.) Less noticeable, but more fatal for the engine - much less dust gets into the air filter (before installing the covers, every 2000 km a hundred grams of sand were removed from the filter when cleaning) and, therefore, the piston service lasts many times longer. They say that 60,000 km without major repairs is not the limit. If you don’t have a native one, the spacer bolt can be made from an M12 or M10 bolt of a suitable length by cutting through the head. The bolt snaps into place when tightened and becomes the 3rd mounting point for the engine

Figure 1 Left view of the motor. The fuel filter with a short hose is clearly visible, as well as the spacer bolt of the carburetor caps under the tank

3. Air contact-oil filter . No wear and tear. It is critical to check the oil level once a season or after you drop the motor, to ensure that there are no cracks in the rubber and that the flange fits tightly to the carb. There is no need to clean it often if the lids are in place

4. Electrical equipment: both 12V and 6V (in my case) systems can work very reliably. At 6V it is advisable to solder the wires to the battery directly. It will solve a bunch of problems with poor terminal contact and voltage loss. Otherwise everything is reliable. We check that the bundles of wires have not been rubbed. Where necessary we wrap it with electrical tape/plastic clamps. At the same time, we control the mobility (pull up the wire - it should move) and the condition (it’s normal to have about 10mm brush length) of the carbon brushes of the generator rotor

5. Ignition: in this simple system there are several subtle points: - spark plugs: of the domestic ones, only A14 (the so-called “for the Volga” with a short thread - sold everywhere) from the Engel plant works normally. The rest is outright crap. Surely, foreign candles are good, but what's the point in paying more? Replacement every 2000 km. Then the oil finishes them off. We change. The color of the insulator is an indicator of the quality of the mixture: it should be cream. Black candle - rich mixture, white - poor - coil and high-voltage wire: the only identified problem is the insulation is aging / damp. If it doesn’t work, just replace it (by the way, the coil can be taken from Java. It’s a rare case when a non-original unit is justified) - breaker: it works for years without problems if oil does not get from the chain. If the contacts are worn out, replace them. Pay attention - there is a piece of felt / felt for lubricating the cam. One drop! Oils - ignition timing. According to the instructions 3.5-4mm. Set it to 2mm - it significantly reduces the kickback in the foot during winding, but the engine power does not have a noticeable effect. To set the ignition angle we will need: feeler gauges for measuring the gap, a caliper and a piece of newsprint. My method is this: set the gap of the breaker contacts to 0.4-0.6 mm using the feeler gauge, then insert a piece of paper between the contacts, rotate the crankshaft to top dead center (the contacts close together), measure the distance to the piston through the spark plug hole, rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise behind the rotor bolt, before the piece of paper can be moved and measure the distance again. The difference in measurements is the ignition timing - Electronic ignition: they say that you can install some kind of electronic ignition from something Chinese on the IZH. If so, it's worth a try. I do not recommend installing the ignition from Voskhod. The light will be very poor.

6. Exhaust system : the main recommendation is to remove the whistles from the silencer, if any were installed by the previous owners. The whistle was installed so that unburnt oil would not fall on the back. Pointless thing when using two-stroke oil. But it stops the engine from breathing and severely limits the power. Conducted. I recommend burning the muffler giblets with a blowtorch to remove carbon deposits for the same reasons.

7. The rear fork is the weak point of the Izhey at the point of attachment to the frame. It can be radically cured by installing 4x 201 bearings, instead of bushings (grooving is required), alternatively (as I did) the life of the fork is extended by installing an oiler for injection. Drill a hole between the feathers / make an M6 thread and fill in with grease

8. Rear shock absorbers: require an oil change every 4000-5000 km. You can fill in synthetic or semi-synthetic if you don’t have a special one. I took it apart, washed it in kerosene and filled it with a new one and reassembled it - everything was simple. Wrap the threads with fum tape so that the oil does not leak out

9. Front fork: the design is quite primitive. Oil leakage seems to be built into the design due to the use of rubber-felt seals. Periodically, every 5000 km we change the oil, 200 ml per feather. When purchasing, it is important to check the condition of the fork pipes and the absence of play. If there is - only replacement

10. Chain: It works in a rubber casing for a long time. Key: - you need to change the chain lock every 2000 km, as the pawl wears out. It costs a penny - it’s not worth repairing half a motor if the chain breaks because of it. Attention (!): the chain lock pawl is installed with a cut against the chain! An alternative is to use a chain rivet instead of a lock - the original drive star on the Planet is 18 teeth. I don’t recommend installing a 19 tooth from Jupiter - it doesn’t increase speed and you overload the motor. Personally, I prefer 17 teeth for off-road use due to low-speed traction - rubber corrugations: it is necessary to monitor the integrity and change when there are gusts. Better without corrugations than with torn ones. Dirt and oil quickly destroy the chain

11. Cylinder-piston group . The main indicator of the “liveness” of the engine is compression. There should be at least 6-7. If less, you need to replace the rings or bore the cylinder. Without compression it is pointless to talk about normal engine operation. When replacing the rings and removing the cylinder, check the play of the lower journal of the crankshaft - there should not be any. Otherwise, only replacement with a complete overhaul. Update No. 2 “- Mounting the cylinder head. If the bike was not driven on 2-stroke oil, we clean the combustion chamber of carbon deposits. Why do we remove the cylinder head? The peculiarity of the Planet is the absence of a labyrinthine seal. The seal is ensured flat to flat, so we don’t work when scratches appear on the aluminum. As a “repair”, a paronite gasket is often placed under the head, which is bad (risk of glow ignition, reduced compression ratio). I advise you to throw it away and rub the head on a flat surface (put fine sandpaper on a flat table, glass, etc.). At the same time, we will slightly raise the compression ratio to adapt to 80 gasoline. You won’t have to clean the combustion chamber with 2-stroke oil for 10,000 km or longer.”

Otherwise, the engine is reliable and requires only periodic oil changes in the box. Science knows of rare problems with flyaway gears, which can be treated by installing shims on the box shaft (fortunately, there is a separate box cover that allows this to be done without removing the engine from the frame and cutting it in half)

12. Engine mount is a problematic element. we control the tightening of the engine mounting bolts - especially the hard-to-reach rear support. It becomes loose and breaks the frame and the quarry.

13. Winding lever: control the tightening of the fastening bolt. If you miss it, it will break pretty quickly. But the main thing is Attention (!): we never start a motorcycle while sitting on it. The recoil can break your leg.

Update No. 1 14. Brakes: drum brakes with mechanical drive. — The rear ones can be quite effective. Secret two (1) pads must be clean of oil (comes from the chain casing if the oil seal is faulty). We wash it if there is anything in gasoline and change the oil seal. (2) But the main thing is to ensure a minimum gap between the pads and the drum. This is achieved by installing adjusting washers under the pad pad. Attention (!): due to the kinematics of the brake drive, when tightening the chain, it is necessary to loosen (adjust) the brake rod. otherwise the brake may start to jam. — The front brakes are quite weak. You have to press the lever with all your fingers if you want to slow down. My advice is to install a two-cam brake from IZH P5 (Yu5) - it is much more effective. You may lose a little in the authenticity of the device, but you will gain in safety. The secret is that in the P1-P4 single-claw brake drum, one block of the block works for tightening (and braking), and the other for pressing. In a two-cam, both pads work to tighten.

15. Frame: in principle, reliable on a single frame. When used with a stroller and under overload (and how could it be otherwise?), bending of the elements often occurs (see the patch on the muffler, which was worn by the winding stem for this reason, in the Photo in the header). Attention (!): I recommend checking before purchasing. It’s difficult to edit - just change

16. Other: the speedometer drive often fails at about 20,000 km. This is due to the design of the front wheel accelerating gearbox. Treated by replacing the small worm gear (and checking the large one for damage)

Everything else, including wheel bearings, oil level in the box, etc.
pretty standard. For motorcycles that have been used with a sidecar (and these are the majority), you should check the straightness of the frame before purchasing. In general, the Planet is a stable and reliable device. With careful use, it will take you to the southern meadows and northern mountains for years. I hope that the recommendations are useful to new IZh owners and will serve as a guide to their first actions. For those who have mastered this list, the next article will be devoted to the setup and operating features of the device. To be continued…

"IZH Jupiter-2" - the photo will not deceive

The design of the bike is quite good for the sixties. IZH Jupiter-2 looks good. The photo cannot fully convey all the colors of the motorcycle.

Large chrome exhaust pipes that run parallel to the ground immediately attract attention. Neat classic frame, there is nothing superfluous on it

The wheels are set shallowly in the wheel arches.

The compact engine, which can be seen in the middle of this picture, does not protrude from the sides. It’s worth saying a little more about the fuel tank. The teardrop shape looks as great as ever. Among the notable details are the round speedometer and the constant “Jupiter” inscription. Next to it is a picture of the planet itself.

Weaknesses of the IZH-P5 engine

  • Air filter;
  • Cylinder-piston group;
  • Transmission.

More details about the weak points of the IZH-P5 power unit...

Air filter. To prevent dust from entering the engine, frequent washing and oiling of the filter element is required. Installing a paper filter would reduce the time spent on engine maintenance during maintenance and would improve the quality of cleaning the air supplying the carburetor.

The CPG wears out after 20,000-25,000 km due to the lack of water cooling.

Transmission. Over the years, due to wear and tear, the gears switch off on their own and adjustment does not eliminate the problem. In this case, it is necessary to overhaul the gearbox and replace worn out parts.

Familiar problems

Reviews from owners indicate that, regardless of the version and year of manufacture, the Izh Planet-3 motorcycle had the same disadvantages:

  • Engine vibration associated with its design features. Almost all single-cylinder engines suffer from this.
  • Problematic electrical equipment. Almost identical to the Jupiter of the same years of production, the 6-volt wiring installed on Izh Planet-3 was not of very high quality. An insufficiently powerful generator created problems when driving at night.

Completely eliminating engine vibrations is almost impossible. Even serious engine tuning does not completely solve the problem. You have to put up with this feature of technology. As for electrics, motorcycle lovers who are interested in tuning Izh Planet-3 often ask the same questions:

  • How to detect ignition system malfunctions?
  • What to do if charging is lost?
  • How to replace the relay regulator?
  • Does it make sense to install electronic ignition?
  • How to replace a failed generator?
  • Where can I find the wiring diagram for Izh Planet-3 at 6 volts?
  • How to install BSZ?

These questions are countless and it is simply impossible to answer them in one review article. This requires digging deeper. And therefore we will try to answer as briefly as possible.

  1. Since the wiring diagram on Izh Planet-3 was repeatedly changed even depending on individual series, one cannot count on an exact match of its description. Sad but true.
  2. Replacing electrical wiring, switching electrical equipment operating from 6 volts to 12 volts and installing contactless ignition are completely justified steps to improve the performance of a motorcycle. After such modernization, ignition installation is simplified, and engine operation becomes more stable. At the same time, you will know exactly how the electrical circuit of your Izh Planet-3 works!

But it’s clearly not worth getting down to business without the necessary skills or suitable tools. As for DIY tuning enthusiasts, for them the Izh Planeta-3 motorcycle is an unplowed field for activity. There is room to expand here. Go for it!

Story

The Izh Planeta-2 road motorcycle was produced between 1965 and 1971. Over the 6 years of production of the model, the world saw about 245,000 copies of it. Planet-2 was covered by a manufacturer’s warranty for one and a half years or 15,000 kilometers.

The previous model “Izh Planet” was less powerful and comfortable. Apart from increased power, Izhmash engineers did not make significant changes to the new Izh Planet-2 motorcycle.

The subsequent model “Izh Planeta-3” is considered the most reliable among all Soviet “Planets”. The third model of single-cylinder Izh motorcycles has a more modern design compared to the previous one. Also, “Planet-3” is equipped with direction indicators, the motor has a return-loop blower. A new braking system and improved clutch are typical for the Izh Planet-3 motorcycle.

Motorcycle modifications

There was only one main factory modification of the Izh Sport, on the basis of which several specific subtypes of the motorcycle were made - for cross-country races, for long trips over rough terrain and for ice racing. The first is popularly called Izh PS Cross, although the correct name is Izh K-15. The enduro version is called Izh M-15. Both are now very difficult to find for sale in decent condition.

But the existence of the Izh Planet Sport 500cc is just a widespread myth. People often tell stories that the IzhMash plant produced a 500 cc limited version, but this is not true. Garage craftsmen sometimes bored the engine to increase volume by installing pistons from CZ, but even in this case the volume did not reach 500 cm³, since the cylinder walls were too thin to allow such boring. The existence of a “reborn” Izh Planet Sport 2 with a 650 cm³ Rotax engine from BMW also belongs to the realm of myths. This “duck” with fake photos at one time alarmed the Internet, but, as it turned out, it was just someone’s joke.

Tuning Izh Planet Sport

Making changes to the design of a motorcycle is impractical for a number of reasons:

  1. The resource of many components and assemblies is small. For this reason, it is almost impossible to improve their characteristics without causing damage.
  2. An Izh Planet Sport 350 restored to its original condition is valued significantly higher than its tuned versions.

However, if there is a desire, something can be done. Many athletes participating in cross-country or circuit racing competitions modified the Izh Planet Sport engine, making various changes to its design. A frequently asked question is how many cubic meters can the engine capacity be increased by.

Engine tuning (boosting)

When boosting the engine, the sports team masters altered many things, from the connecting rod and piston group to the exhaust system. The maximum that could be obtained by pressing in a liner from a CZ 500 and using the piston that came with it was a little over four hundred cubic centimeters of working volume.

But such boosting of the Izh Planet Sport engine requires serious professional skills and sophisticated equipment. The thin walls of a standard cast-iron sleeve pressed into an aluminum cylinder do not allow the engine to be bored up to 500 cc.

The exhaust system cannot cope with the removal of the increased volume of exhaust gases, and the support bearings cannot cope with the increased loads. All the talk that there was a factory version of the Izh Planet Sport 500cc is nothing more than a fairy tale. But boring a cylinder is not the only way to increase power and add agility to a motorcycle.

DIY tuning

Installing a new carburetor is a proven way to improve the performance of the Izh Sport without making significant changes to the design. Over the years, Mikuni has released many new, increasingly advanced models with a diffuser diameter of 32 mm.

Engine tuning can be done in other ways without affecting its mechanical components. Starting and stable operation of single-cylinder engines has always presented certain problems, which can be solved by installing electronic ignition on the Izh Planet Sport. Such kits are produced by several manufacturers, and their installation does not take much time.

When using BKSZ with power units of other modifications, you should be very careful. When installing the ignition from a Minsk motorcycle on the Izh Planet Sport, you must remember that the crankshafts of the engines of these machines rotate in opposite directions. The wires going from the coil to ground and the switch will have to be swapped. Such an engine modification is quite justified.

Planet 2 and Jupiter 2

The appearance of the representatives of the second generation of the Jupiter and Planet families, produced by the Izhevsk Machine-Building Enterprise, is almost identical .
The main difference between these motorcycles is the design of the power units.

So, the Planet 2 engine has one cylinder, while the Jupiter 2 engine is equipped with two.

The crew parts of both vehicles are unified. One-piece (welded) tubular frames are similar, but the motor mounting points are different, so the motors of the models cannot be swapped.

The Jupiter frame in the front part is equipped with a bracket for a stroller, which the Planet does not have.

Both motorcycles marked “2” are equipped with new designs of bearings and protective seals , as well as economical “K-36Zh” carburetors.

For each model, the manufacturer included additional spare parts in the form of a tire pressure gauge and a spare clutch cable.

The average person could distinguish Jupiter 2 from Planet 2 by the emblem on the gas tank of each model.

The Honda X 11 is the first bike to combine sporting and touring characteristics.

Seeing this wonderful motorcycle for the first time, it is difficult to remain indifferent to its appearance:
