Recommendations for proper use of scooters

Consequences of driving on low-quality fuel

What distinguishes a bad fuel mixture from a good one is the presence of impurities. Unscrupulous gas station owners dilute gasoline in order to reduce the price a little more and beat their competitors. For a scooter, refueling with low-quality fuel will not lead to anything good.

  1. The fuel supply system will become clogged with additives. The injector is more sensitive to impurities than the carburetor, but both fail. Problems can be avoided by cleaning the fuel system frequently, but in the long run it costs both time and money.
  2. Carbon deposits remain in the combustion chamber. Typically, gasoline is completely converted into exhaust gases, leaving no traces. But if it is contaminated with something, then impurities will remain on the surfaces of the chamber and piston. This will lead to a drop in power. And due to carbon deposits on the spark plug, starting a vehicle will become a non-trivial task. If you suspect that you received low-quality gasoline, it is recommended to clean the fuel system.
  3. Failures in the propulsion system are also possible. When burned, powders emit additional heat for which the scooter’s design is not designed. Exceeding the temperature for which the model is designed will lead to rapid wear and burnout of parts. There is no way around this without repairs. In the best case, you will have to change one part, in the worst, the entire propulsion system. And this is both difficult and expensive.
  4. Problems will also arise if high-quality but inappropriate fuel is used. If you pour 95 gasoline into a model for which 92 is recommended, the engine will also wear out.

My friends, this topic is urgent like no other, but, in fact, there is nothing special to discuss here. Every time the toad strangles me before pouring 95 AI into the belly of his bug. But there's nothing you can do about it! According to the documentation, scooters can be filled with gasoline no lower than 90, that is, in Russian conditions it is 92.

But: Since gasoline in Russia is much dirtier (stuff floats in it), between 92 and 95 you will still have to choose the latter. 95 is significantly cleaner, with fewer impurities and less sediment and other debris. Another important topic is what brand of scooter to fuel it with. Let's say, if the same Hondochka Dio 18 or, say, Artist will drive 92 as if it were their own, then if you fill the same gasoline in a Suzuki Sepia or Adress, then it’s like death. The fact is that Suzuki does not tolerate 92 gasoline at all, only 95 AI... From all this it follows that scooters in Russia need to be filled with only 95 gasoline.

The savings on fuel are negligible, but repairing the scooter will cost a tidy sum. When using low-quality (dirty) gasoline, you risk:

The gasoline level sensor is clogged (you won’t know how much gasoline is left);

Clog the carburetor: (it will regularly bite the needle, the scooter will pick up speed even if you did not turn the throttle. You can only stop by turning off the ignition. It is extremely dangerous and creates unpredictable situations on the road.);

There is a big risk of clogging the fuel supply pipe, as a result of which it will not be the scooter that will carry you, but you will be the scooter...

By the way, it is better to refuel your scooter only at well-known gas stations. DO NOT refuel the scooter where there is no marking, which company will fill you with gasoline. Most often, unknown gas stations sell low-quality (diluted) gasoline. In the Yaroslavl region, I can recommend refueling at Slavneft stations. TNCs have an eternal problem with a shortage of 95 - it is constantly not there, and when it is, the question of its quality remains open...

In general, it would be wise to carry a liter of gasoline with you for every firefighter... It won’t be difficult for you, but if something happens, it will come in very handy.

With oils, everything is simpler: the more expensive, the better. The most suitable and highest quality oil for scooters is French Motul. I can't say anything bad about him. The company really keeps its brand. I recommend to everyone. Price – about 250 rubles

8.3 $. Manol brand oil is also quite suitable, although it is somewhat inferior in quality, but if you are not entirely picky, it will also work. Unlike the gourmet Motul, Manol is almost always available in specialized stores. By the way, do not forget that car oil is not suitable for you. Buy oils produced by TNK, Slavneft, etc. I can’t advise, I’ve never tried to fill it, and the price is 50 rubles. somewhat confusing...

Scooters and mopeds require special oil for two-stroke engines (for mopeds, motorcycles, chainsaws) (2t will be written on the canister). Therefore, friends, in order for you to have a long and happy ride on your favorite chainsaw, feed and water it only with high-quality products, and the chainsaw will respond to you with grateful, long, correct work! )

What kind of oil is poured into a scooter?

Every novice motorist is faced with the question of choosing oil for a scooter. After all, the fate of your iron horse directly depends on this. First you need to determine what exactly you need. There are two types of scooter oil: two-stroke (2t) and four-stroke (4t). Each type, in turn, is divided into three types: synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral.

Scooter with a two-stroke engine Small engines that are installed on motorcycles are prone to carbon deposits, so the oil in the scooter gearbox should contain components that help keep the components clean and be pumped by the engine without delay.

For two-stroke scooters the oil must be 2t. It mixes well with gasoline, will not clog the carburetor and will not settle to the bottom if you pour it directly into the tank. This oil mixes with gasoline in a smaller ratio, therefore, your scooter will smoke less, and therefore less carbon deposits will accumulate on the spark plug, in the combustion chamber, in exhaust pipes and channels. Choose synthetic oil if you are going to operate your scooter in difficult climatic conditions. It is suitable for use down to -35°C without losing its properties. For daily driving in the city and country roads, mineral or semi-synthetic oil is suitable.

Scooter with a four-stroke engine If your scooter has a conventional gearbox, then 4 tons of oil is required, if it is a variator, then transmission oil. So which one to choose: synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral? It depends on your riding style, the age and condition of your moped, etc. All manufacturers of four-stroke mopeds generally recommend using 10w-40 semi-synthetic oil. The oil must protect and lubricate rubbing pairs of parts well, be low-smoke, and ensure constant operation of the clutch operating in an oil bath. That’s why special 4t oil is used, although the moped will also work with simple car oil.

For new high-speed and high-speed engines, 2t synthetic oil is better suited. It will keep the engine cylinder-piston group clean. And the gearbox of a two-stroke scooter can be filled with 4 tons of oil. Now, you know what kind of oil is poured into a scooter. The choice is yours, the main thing is not to save money.

How to choose octane number

All scooters, without exception, require either 92 or 95 fuel. Some latest Italian models can be filled with 98, but manufacturers do not recommend this. Let's figure out why.

The number next to the fuel is called the octane number. It determines the optimal compression of the engine that can operate with this gasoline. If the combustible mixture is not compressed strongly enough, then its combustion will be uneven, and the heat, instead of making the engine work, will go into heating its parts. Because of this, they will wear out faster. If the compression force is too high, then there is a risk of spontaneous ignition of the mixture even without a spark. But the difference between neighboring numbers in this aspect is insignificant, so in 80% of cases you can fill in 92 gasoline instead of 95.

To understand whether 95 can be used on your model, you need to look at the manufacturer's recommendations. If they are not preserved, they can be found on the Internet. General tips would be:

  1. The better the engine compression, the better the two-wheeled friend on the 95 will perform. Compression is best for Japanese and especially Italian models. But a Chinese scooter definitely requires 92.
  2. A 2t scooter only needs to be filled with 92-gasoline. With a two-stroke cycle, compression plays a lesser role. But you can put ninety-five in a 4t scooter. If, of course, this is provided by the manufacturer.
  3. You can fill the moped with both. It all depends on the specific characteristics. Mopeds can be either 2t or 4t, so the recommendations for them are the same as for scooters. For example, you can fill an alpha moped with 95% gasoline. The same applies to other models.
  4. The same rules apply to motorcycles in this aspect. However, it is still recommended to give preference to 92nd gasoline. Experts unanimously advise not to fill a Ural motorcycle with anything higher than 92.
  5. Even if fuel goes into a 4-stroke engine, you should pay attention to the wear and tear of the fuel system. If the scooter has been in use for a long time, sometimes malfunctions, or some parts have already been changed, you should choose the ninety-second one.
  6. Single use of gasoline with a higher octane number will not harm the iron horse. If you run out of 92 at the gas station, feel free to use 95. But try not to rev high to reduce wear on your two-wheeled friend.

Why is fresh scooter gear oil necessary?

One of the most important components of a scooter can rightly be called the gearbox. It is responsible for timely reducing the speed of the driven shaft, thereby increasing torque. That is, it converts high speeds into fairly powerful, but low wheel speeds. This part consists of a number of rubbing elements (gears and bearings) that undergo enormous loads, and, as expected, they need good care. It is the transmission oil that provides such care.

It is an oil doped with various functional additives. The main function of transmission fluids can be called protective, as they protect the surface from wear, corrosion, seizing, etc. In addition, thanks to them, energy losses are reduced and heat removal from friction surfaces is ensured. Shock loads, vibrations and noise in gear drives are also significantly reduced.

How to choose a gas station

It is best to give preference to proven brands. Although they charge more, the temptation to win a few rubles will return many times with unexpected problems. Once you get caught by scammers three times, the repairs will cost a pretty penny. Even if you have confidence in your iron horse, and a 2-stroke scooter is less susceptible to problems than a 4t scooter, it’s not worth the risk.

However, with the spread of the mobile Internet, it has become possible to check the reputation of a gas station at any time. Applications such as DriverNotes or CamOnRoad are suitable for the owner of any vehicle, be it a car, motorcycle or delta moped.

Test rides

As noted above, it takes very little time to get used to the scooter. Key points to consider on your first trips:

  • acceleration control,
  • correct braking
  • and selection of cornering speed.

Simple rules for beginners

  • You should not immediately go onto public roads and try to move at the speed of the flow.
  • It is better to exchange the first ten kilometers on the odometer in safe, deserted roads or special areas.
  • The speed for the first time should be limited to twenty kilometers per hour.

How to change the oil in a scooter gearbox yourself?

The first step is to select transmission oil for the scooter. In general, this is quite easy to do, you just need to follow the manufacturer's recommendations. You can also use motor oil with a viscosity of 10W-30

, especially if your scooter does not sit idle during the cold season, this composition will be more liquid, which means you have a reserve of viscosity for cold weather. In addition, the transmission fluid has also proven itself well.

ATF

, characterized by excellent fluidity and excellent protective properties.

Having selected the desired fluid, you can proceed directly to replacing it. This can only be done on well-warmed-up equipment, so you can ride it first or simply warm up the gearbox for twenty minutes. This way, the old oil will become thinner and easier to drain, and all the dirt and debris that has settled at the bottom will rise and come out along with the liquid.

Next, having previously wiped the drain and filler holes, unscrew the nuts from them (first from the filler hole, then from the drain hole). Then, replacing the container, remove the old oil. At this time, you can wash all the removed bolts and nuts in gasoline. When there is no drain bolt, the oil is changed using only one bolt; in this case, the scooter should be tilted on its side. It is better to fill in new liquid using a medical syringe, drawing the required amount into it. Most often, the required volume is stamped on the gearbox housing, but if there are no such instructions, then you can fill it to the bottom of the bolt thread.

The first time you should change the oil after 500 km, then every 1000. It is also recommended to change the oil after carrying out work on the cylinder: replacing the cylinder, removing the cylinder head, etc., since during these works, even if everything was done carefully, there is a possibility dirt and metal particles getting into the engine. You will need a wrench with a head (most likely 19).

The oil change must be carried out when the engine is warm - this way the oil becomes more fluid, and dirt, if any, rises from the bottom of the crankcase, mixing with the oil. The scooter must be placed on the center stand.

Work order:

  • Unscrew the filler cap (dipstick), located on the right side of the engine, next to the generator
  • Place a container (about 1 liter) under the drain hole to drain the used oil and unscrew the drain plug counterclockwise. To unscrew, use only the head - an open-end wrench can damage the drain plug, which is made of aluminum. Under the plug there is a spring and an oil filter - mesh
  • Drain the oil
  • Wash the drain plug and filter in gasoline
  • Screw in and tighten the drain plug. Don't overdo it - remember that the plug and crankcase are made of aluminum. Excessive force may damage the threads.
  • Pour 800 ml of engine oil into the engine through the filler neck using a suitable funnel.
  • Tighten the filler cap

Replacement algorithm

Motor oils come in mineral, synthetic and semi-synthetic bases.

There is no need to skimp on lubrication. The fluid level must always correspond to the operating level mark set by the manufacturer. If you do not add or change the lubricant, the piston group quickly becomes unusable or simply jams. This can lead to costly repairs. The lubricant is replaced after traveling 2-3 thousand kilometers.

To change the lubricant you will need:

  1. Socket or socket wrench (17 or 19).
  2. Funnel for filling.
  3. Rags.
  4. Thinner or a little gasoline.
  5. Container for processing.

Replacement algorithm:

  1. Warm up the engine by driving a couple of kilometers.
  2. Clean the filler and drain holes from dirt and deposits.
  3. Unscrew the dipstick and release the filler hole.
  4. Gradually unscrew the drain hole.
  5. Drain the liquid into a container, rinse the nut and filter. You can tilt the scooter slightly to completely empty the crankcase.
  6. Tighten the nut with the filter after the crankcase is completely empty.
  7. Fill in new oil through a funnel to the operating level (check by dipstick).

After replacement, you should periodically check the level and add oil if necessary.
