Don’t know how to choose an ATV and what characteristics to look for? Let's figure it out, Bike18 will help you!

Which ATV is better to buy for riding?

To make the right choice, you need to decide on the location of your future trips:

  • For rides on asphalt, choose an engine volume of up to 500 cc. cm and a power of no more than 70 hp. The transmission does not play a role in this case.
  • For fishermen, hunters, and rides through fields and forests, we recommend considering models with an engine capacity of up to 150 cc. cm, not exceeding 45 hp. Acceleration to 70 km/h will be enough. An automatic transmission or CVT is required so as not to be distracted by changing gears.
  • For racing and extreme sports - everything is simple. You can safely consider engine capacity up to 1100 cc. cm., power up to 85 hp. and speed up to 120 km/h. An automatic transmission would be an advantage.

Varieties

According to their intended purpose, ATVs are usually divided into 3 groups:

  1. Sports all-terrain vehicles. They are distinguished by good speed performance (maximum speed and rapid acceleration), maneuverability, and relatively low weight. Designed primarily for movement on level surfaces. Sports ATVs have low ground clearance, which is one of the factors that makes them unsuitable for off-road use. Most often, sports models are equipped with a manual transmission and two drive wheels. The maneuverability of the ATV is achieved thanks to the independent suspension.

  1. Utilitarian all-terrain vehicles. Utility means the ability to use additional equipment, for which special fastenings are provided. Powerful modifications used for cross-country travel, for use in agricultural or snow removal work, for transporting goods and other practical purposes. They are characterized by large weight, powerful engine and all-wheel drive. Ideal for traveling in suburban conditions and can be used for outdoor trips. They have one or two spacious trunks. A characteristic feature is large wheels with a deep tread pattern.
  2. Tourist all-terrain vehicles. Ideal for hunting. Such models are lighter than utilitarian ones, but at the same time they also have many of their advantages, including all-weather and cross-country ability. The latter quality is achieved by high ground clearance and low tire pressure, which allows you to overcome both snowdrifts and sand dunes. They have good handling. There are not only single-seat models on the market, but also double-seat models, which are much more popular among hunters and fishermen.

Side-by-side ATVs

It is worth mentioning separately about side-by-side all-terrain vehicles. This motorcycle also belongs to ATVs, but unlike standard modifications it is equipped with a steering wheel, like in a car. All-terrain vehicles of this type use row seats (hence the name - side-by-side, meaning “side by side”). Another name for Side-by-side all-terrain vehicles is Utility Track Vehicle (UTV).

Side-by-side most often have 2 driving axles. In some cases there is a sliding third axle (not driving). There are also three-axle all-wheel drive modifications.

Utility Track Vehicles run on gasoline. The gearbox is continuously variable with a V-belt variator.

UTVs can accommodate 2 to 6 people. Passengers are provided with seat belts. There may be a cargo box in the rear. If necessary, additional equipment is installed, for example: side insulation, windshield, hard roof, etc.

Tricycles

The name tricycle refers to three-wheeled vehicles of all types, including motorized ones. This is the simplest type of all-terrain vehicle, produced on a motorcycle base.

Tricycles have the following advantages:

  • simplicity of design, easy maintenance, reliability;
  • all main elements are easily accessible, which facilitates repair work;
  • due to their design features they are distinguished by maneuverability;
  • efficiency achieved due to lower weight compared to ATVs;
  • good speed capabilities (up to 50 kilometers per hour);
  • normal level of comfort (motorcycle shock absorbers are used);
  • normal transportability - the tricycle weighs about 320-360 kilograms, which allows it to be transported in a trailer;
  • good buoyancy, allowing movement through swampy areas and shallow bodies of water;
  • affordable price.

Disadvantages of tricycles:

  • lack of a cabin;
  • impossibility of rear-wheel drive;
  • travels on 3 tracks, which makes it difficult to move in off-road conditions along deep ruts left by heavy equipment - difficulties may arise when moving on any soft soils (sand, wetlands, mud, etc.);
  • no power steering;
  • little space for luggage;
  • no reverse gear;
  • The engine air cooling system is used. As a result, the engine may overheat at high loads.

Motorcycles for hunting

They are two-wheeled vehicles with off-road capabilities. They are characterized by increased ground clearance, robust construction and special all-terrain tires.

Motorized towing vehicles (motorized dogs)

Motorized vehicles in which a towing vehicle on tracks is connected to a sled. In this case, the driver and luggage are located on a sleigh or drag. Modifications with a cargo compartment on the motorized towing vehicle are also offered. The most commonly used carburetor gasoline engine with one cylinder.

Two-seat sport quad: Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R

The Maverick line is deservedly considered top-end: it was it that served as the impetus for the development of sports racing all-terrain vehicles. And the 900 cc Turbo R is one of the most powerful ATVs in the line and (one of the most powerful production ATVs in general: with a 172 hp engine, it can accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. For comparison: the fastest sports cars cost hundreds of thousands of dollars accelerate only a little faster (in 2.7-3 s).

In addition to its powerful turbocharged engine, the Maverick X3 Turbo R features 11.5 inches of ground clearance, enormous suspension travel (559 mm front and 610 mm rear), 30-inch Maxxis Bighorn 2 wheels and custom FOX 2.5 Podium RC2 PHG and FOX 3.0 shock absorbers. The basic configuration already includes underbody protection, doors and a roof.

In addition to impressive performance and aggressive design, the Maverick also features a comfortable cabin. With customizable seats and a car-like layout with smart ergonomics, this ATV can take you on long, long rides.

Model overview

Let's look at several of the most popular ATV models on the Russian market.

Yamaha Grizzly 700 EPS

The engine uses a 700 cc unit with one cylinder, a liquid cooling system and a pair of overhead camshafts. A characteristic feature of the model, which has a cylinder diameter of 103 millimeters, is more than sufficient torque. However, the vibration of the engine is quite noticeable. The all-terrain vehicle is equipped with an electric starter and transistor electronic ignition. A three-mode Ultramatic automatic transmission is used.

Although the engine power has been increased in the latest modification, the engine now consumes less fuel. This was achieved thanks to ceramics - the cylinder mirror is covered with it.

Traditionally, Yamaha is characterized by excellent maneuverability and good cross-country ability, therefore it is in demand among hunters and fishermen. The Yamaha is capable of towing a 600-kilogram trailer and carrying up to 140 kilograms of cargo on 2 racks.

The ATV is equipped with electric power steering from Ackermann and disc brakes. They are available on all wheels; there is not only a transmission brake on the rear axle, as in many other all-terrain vehicles.

A special feature of this manufacturer is the prevalence of single-seat models in its lineup. It is for this reason that very high-quality motorcycles from Yamaha yield the palm in the Russian market to the Canadian Bombardier.

It should also be noted that there is no winch and tow bar included as standard. They need to be purchased separately.

Honda TRX680FA Rincon

The ATV from the Japanese manufacturer is equipped with an injection four-stroke engine with liquid cooling. Engine capacity is 675 cubic centimeters. The Honda TRX680FA Rincon is equipped with transistor ignition with electronic advance.

The model has an automatic transmission (with manual control). Thanks to this, ease of control is achieved.

The independent rear suspension is equipped with aluminum arms. Disc brakes, electric and manual starters are installed.

The TRX680FA model has a ground clearance of 254 millimeters and large wheels, which allows the all-terrain vehicle to be used for off-road driving. The weight of the ATV is 277 kilograms, which is not at all much for an all-terrain vehicle of this level.

The fuel system includes electronic injection and IACV control. The Honda gas tank holds 17 liters of fuel, which allows it to be used for trips to remote areas.

Russian mechanics RM 500 4X4

The representative of the Russian motorcycle industry is the Russian Mechanics ATV with the RM 500 model. This is the first Russian all-terrain vehicle, the production of which began in 2011.

Russian Mechanics ATVs have a 500 cubic centimeter engine with a power of 41 horsepower, a 2x2 drive and 26-inch wheels with alloy discs. The gas tank holds 25 liters of fuel. Such a reserve of gasoline allows you to travel up to 200 kilometers.

To ensure the stability of the RM-500, engineers lengthened the wheelbase. Thanks to this, the ATV has become safer at high speeds. The model has good cross-country ability, which provides high ground clearance (29 centimeters). The carrying capacity of the RM-500 (270 kilograms) allows the all-terrain vehicle to be used for transporting fairly heavy loads.

PM 650

Another ATV from Russian Mechanics is RM-650-2. It is a long-wheelbase modification of the PM-650. It has become longer than the standard version by 18 centimeters. This ATV differs from the 500th model by a more powerful engine - 650 cubic meters instead of 500.

The all-terrain vehicle is equipped with a double seat, and the seat is designed as a two-level seat, which improves visibility for the passenger.

“RM-650-2” has 2 luggage platforms: one for 40 kilograms, the second for 80. The basic kit includes an electric winch, alloy wheels, rear-view mirrors, arch extensions, lighting devices, a protective kit for the bottom and a towbar.

Polaris 570 BIG BOSS 6X6 Forest

The model differs from the American one in its excellent utilitarian characteristics: 6 drive wheels and a trunk capacity of 360 kilograms. However, the engine power for such heavy equipment seems insufficient - only 44 horsepower for almost five hundred kilograms of weight. Once in the mud, you need to turn at least 4 wheels (the front axle is connected here), and doing this with a weak engine is problematic. In addition, Polaris is not a very maneuverable vehicle due to the heavy design.

Another drawback of Polaris is its lack of reliability. Owners of these ATVs complain about their regular breakdowns.

BRP Outlander MAX 850 XT-P

The name Outlander MAX itself indicates the off-road capabilities of this device. The Canadian ATV is characterized by a large 850 cubic centimeter engine with a capacity of 78 horsepower, which, together with a low gear, provides great off-road capabilities. If the 850 cc engine is not enough, the Canadians offer an even more powerful liter version.

The model is standardly equipped with adjustable shock absorbers, a 1,350-kilogram winch, and wheels with Beadlock (locks in case of low tire pressure or powerful mechanical loads that prevent the tire from coming off the rim). The front differential does not need to be locked forcibly, as the automatic clutch will handle this. For an experienced ATV owner, this option may not be necessary, but for a beginner this feature is very useful.

The ATV is equipped with two luggage platforms. If necessary, the all-terrain vehicle can be transformed into a single-seater (the passenger seat can be removed). As a result, the carrying capacity will increase even more. A winch is included as standard.

Important! Some owners note the poor placement of the radiator on the BRP Outlander MAX 850 XT-P. A significant disadvantage of an ATV is its high cost. Prices start from one and a half million rubles.

CFMOTO X4 Basic

Despite their Chinese origin, the CFMOTO X4 Basic ATVs are of good quality. Moreover, their cost is relatively low. For hunters with a limited budget, this model is one of the priority ones in terms of price and quality ratio.

"CFMOTO X4 Basic" is equipped with a single-cylinder 400 cubic centimeter engine. A fuel injection system from Bosch is installed, as well as a CVTECH variator.

The water-cooled engine has good traction, which is very useful for a utilitarian all-terrain vehicle. The ATV reaches almost 100 km speed on the highway. In bad road conditions, a reduction gearbox is used to connect all-wheel drive. The all-terrain vehicle has a locking differential.

“CFMOTO X4 Basic” is a fairly comfortable ATV. It is equipped with an energy-intensive suspension. The engineers also thought through ergonomics, doing everything for the convenience of the driver and passenger. There is a backrest, the luggage platforms are reliable and make it possible to transport large loads. It is possible to install a “kenguryatnik”, which will protect against unpleasant surprises when driving off-road.

The rims are made of steel. Not the most modern solution, but we are talking about a budget model of an all-terrain vehicle.

Kawasaki Mule Pro-DXT

The name of this ATV fully reflects its essence: it is really a “mule” - a working device for overcoming off-road conditions and performing utilitarian functions. The all-terrain vehicle has a diesel liter engine with 3 cylinders. The engine has economical fuel consumption and good traction. The greatest torque occurs when it reaches 2.4 thousand rpm.

The variator is located in the same block with a reduction gearbox, so the ATV can easily overcome off-road conditions even with a passenger and a full load of luggage. Another advantage of the Kawasaki Mule Pro-DXT all-terrain vehicle is its large gas tank, which can hold 30 liters of diesel fuel. Thanks to this, as well as its utilitarian capabilities, the Japanese ATV is perfect for hunting and fishing trips.

Note! Compared to standard models, the strength of the variator on this model is 4 times higher.

The all-terrain vehicle from Kawasaki also has disadvantages, including:

  1. The battery and air filter are installed in a compartment near the wheel arch. If the jet ski gets into a deep puddle or body of water, water hammer may occur.
  2. Insufficient air intake, which can lead to overheating.

Yamaha Rhino 660

The Yamaha Rhino 660 model, popular among hunters, is equipped with a 660 cc single-cylinder engine with electronic fuel injection, a pair of hydraulic disc brakes, an updated parking brake, and a large tank with a capacity of 320 liters of fuel. The Yamaha Rhino 660 is capable of carrying up to 180 kilograms of cargo.

Stels ATV 800 Guepard Trophy Pro EPS

The Russian all-terrain vehicle "Gepard" is in steady demand among hunters and fishing enthusiasts. "Stels ATV 800 Guepard Trophy Pro EPS" has an 800 cc V-twin engine with two cylinders. Engine power - 67 horsepower.

Thanks to its high-torque engine, the Russian all-terrain vehicle performs well off-road. The ground clearance of the Cheetah is especially impressive - 32 centimeters. At the same time, owners of ATVs of this model note their good handling.

“Stels ATV 800 Guepard Trophy Pro EPS” has 2 seats and is equipped with comfortable seats. The design of the model is made in a masculine, slightly aggressive style, which softens the smooth lines of the body.

The premium package of the Gepard includes a winch, a passenger seat, a towbar and a front rack. The basic version does not have such options.

Look at the video review, which will help you decide which ATV to choose from the Stels Guepard series.

Motorcycle for hunting

Regular motorcycles

Among the numerous brands of motorcycles, there are those that have long earned popularity among hunters due to their utilitarian qualities. We are talking primarily about Ural and MT.

Motorcycle Ural

Today, the Ural is the only heavy motorcycle produced in Russia. Manufactured at the Irbit motorcycle plant. Due to its large weight, it is most often used with a stroller, although there are also models without it. However, hunters are interested in motorcycles with sidecars, since they can carry loads.

Ural motorcycles are equipped with four-stroke two-cylinder boxer engines with a volume of 750 cubic centimeters. Engine power is 41 horsepower. The motorcycle is equipped with a four-speed transmission with reverse gear and a cardan drive for the rear wheel.

Motorcycle MT

The now discontinued MT model (another name is “Dnepr”) is still in demand among hunters and fishermen on the secondary market. There are many modifications of MT motorcycles, as they were produced from the 50s to the 90s.

An example of a utilitarian motorcycle for hunting of the Dnepr brand is the MT-11 model. Its main technical characteristics:

  • two-cylinder four-stroke carburetor engine;
  • engine power - 24 horsepower;
  • air cooling;
  • double-disc dry clutch;
  • transmission with four speeds and reverse;
  • The rear wheel suspension is made as a lever suspension with spring-hydraulic shock absorbers;
  • drum brakes;
  • maximum speed - 100 kilometers per hour;
  • fuel consumption - 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers;
  • fuel tank 19 liters.

Two-wheeled all-terrain vehicles

Most often, all-terrain vehicles are produced in three-wheel (tricycles) or four-wheel configurations (quads). However, there are also two-wheeled models designed for use in off-road conditions. Typically, such an all-terrain vehicle is equipped with the most simple, but reliable and powerful engine, automatic transmission and off-road tires.

Important! The main qualities of any all-terrain vehicle, including off-road ones, are unpretentiousness, cross-country ability, good engine traction and resistance to mechanical damage.

Compared to tricycles and ATVs, two-wheeled models are more maneuverable. Light weight allows you to move where a heavy ATV cannot pass or will be loaded due to its size and weight.
