ATV "Grizzly" (Yamaha, Grizzly): models, characteristics and reviews

The Japanese brand Yamaha is a manufacturer that is popular in the Russian market. Buyers love Yamaha motorcycles for their high-quality assembly, standard technical characteristics, long service life and stylish design. The company released its first all-wheel drive ATV back in 1987. Ten years later, an all-terrain vehicle appeared on the market, which became the founder of the Grizzly series: a sales leader, equipment with first-class qualities. In 2021, the company released an updated version - Yamaha Grizzly 700 2019.

Market leaders

The number of manufacturers of this type of vehicle is growing in step with their popularity among consumers. Their leaders include such well-known brands as: Polaris, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda. This list would be incomplete without one of the world leaders - Yamaha, one of the largest manufacturers of motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles and much other equipment. The Grizzly ATV of this brand is one of the most popular models in the world. Grizzly from Yamaha quickly gained popularity due to its power and technology, as well as originality, both external and internal.

Model range of utilitarian ATVs

One of the primary tasks of any global manufacturer is to cover as large a market segment as possible. Naturally, this requires taking into account the needs and preferences of a large number of consumers. The line of Yamaha Grizzly models is quite impressive and includes about nine cars, each of which has certain characteristics that are improved year after year by the designers of the Japanese manufacturer. Since 2007, when the universal Yamaha ATVs began to gain popularity, all models in the series have been improved several times. Thus, initially the most popular model was the Yamaha Grizzly 700, which was awarded the title of “ATV of the Year 2007”. It is worth noting that the younger brothers (for example, Grizzly 550 or Grizzly 350) were less in demand at that time due to less power and functionality. But everything is changing, and new improved models, which took into account many consumer wishes, began to receive high marks in tests for all main indicators.

Suspension, electric power steering, exhaust and braking systems

The Grizzly 700 has independent suspension on all wheels. The levers are double and transverse, and the shock absorbers are filled with gas. The suspension can be adjusted depending on the load and environmental conditions; for this, the shock absorbers have five spring positions. Thanks to the large wheel travel, the car can drive off-road and overcome obstacles.

All four wheels are equipped with brake discs with two-piston calipers, they are controlled using a pedal and lever on the steering wheel. This braking system is one of the most effective. Deceleration and stopping rates can be predicted for any surface.

Compared to previous models, the Yamaha 700 is much easier to control. This effect is achieved through the introduction of an improved manual control motor. It is convenient for the driver to drive the ATV, physical activity is reduced, and driving long distances has become more comfortable. Other features of the model are a high air intake and a stainless steel exhaust system.

The flagship of the lineup

The Grizzly 700 ATV still remains the most popular model in the series. It has also undergone a series of improvements. As a result, the newest modification of the YAMAHA Grizzly 700 SE embodies almost all the best characteristics of these machines. This tough all-terrain vehicle managed to harness its considerable power, largely thanks to the electronic control unit. The power steering system (EPS) made the car more tractable and improved the already considerable driving performance and cross-country ability. On the Yamaha Grizzly 700 model, thanks to the innovative patented On-Command system, used exclusively on Yamaha equipment, unprecedented stability and maneuverability were achieved, both on loose, marshy soils and rocky slopes. The epitome of all-terrain capability is complemented by a 686cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine with four valves per cylinder. This Grizzly ATV is equipped with a CVT automatic transmission for optimal all-wheel drive.

One of the achievements of the technical thought of specialists from the Yamaha Corporation is the ability to change the drive option with the press of one button. There are three modes to choose from: 2WD, 4WD and 4WD with differential lock. In off-road conditions, such a function in controlling an ATV can be vital. Another distinctive feature of the Yamaha Grizzly 700 ATVs is the Special Edition color variation. Optionally, it is possible to install light alloy wheels with branding.

Engine

In previous models, designers installed a 708 cc engine with two camshafts, but in 2021 they decided to return to 686 cm³ and one camshaft. The model has a modernized intake manifold and a new injection and ignition control unit, which helps to simultaneously reduce fuel consumption and increase power at mid-range speeds. Such engines have much less vibration, and the noise level is reduced by 3-4 dB. This is achieved with several updates:

  • the use of a forged piston rather than a cast one.
  • the presence of electrochemically applied sputtering.
  • weight reduction by 6%.
  • reducing clearances and distances between balancer shafts.
  • changing the design of silent blocks.

Off-road conqueror

Reliable, off-road and maneuverable universal transport YAMAHA Grizzly 660. This Grizzly ATV with 4x4 drive is indispensable in off-road conditions. Its Ultramatic automatic transmission offers additional downhill braking with engine, reverse and low-range gearing. The ATV is equipped with a powerful, reliable, but at the same time compact 5-valve engine with liquid cooling and a V-belt variator. A characteristic feature of this power unit is smooth and uninterrupted operation. Even at low speeds, high torque is maintained. The amazing handling and maneuverability of the Grizzly 660 all-terrain vehicle is ensured by optimally balanced dimensions, a light steering wheel and an adjustable rear suspension. Relatively low weight ensures efficiency, thirty centimeters of ground clearance and improved suspension ensure a comfortable ride even on the most difficult routes.

The engine used in the Grizzly 660 all-terrain vehicle is the latest development by Yamaha engineers. It uses a patented five-valve combustion chamber. The new design solution allows for smooth and uninterrupted operation of the engine under any load. The long-travel independent rear suspension guarantees impeccable grip on the surface, be it swamp mud or a rocky slope. All this ensures safe and efficient riding of the ATV on any surface.

Yamaha Grizzly EPS 2021 Features

Engine and transmission

The heart of the Grizzly is Yamaha's 686cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. In the Grizzly, it provides quicker throttle response than the same engine in the Yamaha Kodiak, making it ideal for aggressive off-road riding.

All engine power is managed through Yamaha's Ultramatic automatic transmission , which features a sealed shifter, low-range and reverse gears. This is one of the most reliable transmissions in the class, and Yamaha backs its drive belt with an unheard of 10-year warranty.

Chassis and suspension

The 2021 Yamaha Grizzly also offers an all-wheel drive system that allows the rider to select 2WD, non-locking 4WD, and fully locked 4WD with the touch of a button. Keeping the Grizzly on the ground are 26-inch Maxxis tires that, combined with hydraulic disc brakes on all four corners, provide good stopping power.

In terms of suspension, the Yamaha Grizzly features independent double wishbone suspension front and rear , with 19 centimeters of travel at the front and 24 centimeters at the rear. You can fine-tune the suspension characteristics with the five-stage preload adjustment of the nitrous shock absorbers.

Add in 29 centimeters of ground clearance, and you will be able to climb over or overturn any obstacle in your path. If you happen to hit a big rock (we do sometimes), the Yamaha Grizzly has a full-length composite skid plate.

Comfort and a sense of control

To enhance your comfort and control on the trail, every Grizzly model comes equipped with electric power steering. We've thoroughly tested Yamaha's EPS and the booster does a great job of keeping your arms from putting unnecessary strain on your shoulders, while still providing enough feedback to let you feel the road beneath your tires.

Grizzly's philosophy is that it's ready to work when you need it.

The 2021 Yamaha Grizzly features LED headlights that provide impressive illumination while consuming less power. Add in a handlebar-mounted halogen cornering light, and the Grizzly is ready to go after the sun goes down... or before dawn.

Yamaha Grizzly 2020

The front and rear large-diameter steel racks can carry 140 kilograms (50 kilograms front, 90 kilograms rear). The Grizzly can also tow a trailer weighing up to 600 kilograms using a trailer hitch.

The 2021 Yamaha Grizzly EPS is available in Army Green or Alpine White, with RealTree Edge camo available at an additional cost.

A bright representative of the model range

The Grizzly 450 ATV is a key model in the global market in the segment of versatile middle-weight ATVs. The Yamaha Grizzly 450 was first released back in 2007, but gained real popularity after improvements in 2011. It is distinguished by its high versatility, reliability and technological superiority. The chassis of this model is rightfully considered the most technologically advanced in its class. The wet braking system is an advantage of this ATV. Thanks to it, the Grizzly 450 can be stopped predictably and effectively in any conditions. High lugs on the tires, as well as independent suspension with adjustable tension, make this model extremely off-road.

At a relatively small size, the Grizzly 450 combines many of the qualities of a full-size ATV. A fairly powerful single-cylinder engine with a volume of 421 cm3 with liquid cooling, characteristic of the entire Yamaha model line, allows the Grizzly 450 to be used both in farming and for extreme travel. A reliable hydraulic braking system, an updated chassis, high maneuverability and maneuverability make driving even in the most difficult conditions a pleasure, and a three-mode selection system and a liquid crystal instrument panel only enhance the feeling of comfort.

External features

The all-terrain vehicle has a dashboard with increased functionality. Now it contains counters for speed, mileage, fuel reserves, temperature, network voltage, and time. Buttons are used to switch. In addition, the driver can see the selected transmission mode and battery charge.

LED headlights are mounted in the front fenders. They are reliable and shine quite brightly, although they consume little energy. A halogen lamp on the steering wheel acts as an additional light source. The car has three small luggage compartments, which are suitable for storing small items needed on the road.

The 2021 Yamaha 700 ATV is a powerful vehicle suitable for off-road riding. Buyers note the high build quality and reliability of all components. And if you want to buy an all-terrain vehicle from an official dealer offering a warranty and post-warranty service, contact Yamaha-Ostrovtsy.

For work and leisure

One of the most attractive and affordable options from the Grizzly model line is the Grizzly 350 ATVs. This all-terrain vehicle is one of the world leaders in the entry-level ATV segment. With all-wheel drive, a fairly impressive entry-level 348cc engine and automatic transmission, the Yamaha Grizzly 350 has become the first choice for many extreme sports enthusiasts. Engine cooling is air-oil. The power unit operates over a wide speed range, which allows you to get out of the most difficult road troubles.

The Grizzly 350 ATV is unpretentious, has excellent cross-country ability and is perfect both as an assistant at work and for leisure. It perfectly combines all the necessary qualities of these goals. Connectable all-wheel drive, patented Ultramatic transmission, which allows engine braking on steep descents, small turning radius, adjustable suspension, torquey engine - this is not a complete list of characteristics thanks to which many consumers choose this ATV.

Mud ATV

Mud ATV Grizzly eps se

This is not the first time Yamaha engineers have had to create a mud ATV. In 2009, we already had to deal with a model of this type: the Yamaha Big Bear 400. This ATV is smaller, does not have a winch, but comes off the assembly line shod with specialized 25-inch ITP Mud Lite tires. The Big Bear 400 was designed to be ridden on trails, but the driver could drive through, for example, a puddle without fear of getting stuck.

We can say the same about the 2019 Yamaha Grizzly EPS SE, only it's bigger and better. The Maxxis Zilla tires are two inches taller than the Mud Lites on the Big Bear. They also provide better traction in muddy conditions than any other Grizzly model that does not have an SE designation. But at the same time, you will not feel any discomfort when driving on smoother surfaces and on compacted roads, as is the case with aggressive mud tires. Despite their large size, Zilla tires are relatively light, which reduces rotating masses that take away power. The Yamaha Grizzly EPS SE 2021 ATV coped with all the tests on a short test drive. The wheels never even skidded.

The winch and new tires are a nice touch, but otherwise the SE model remains the same Grizzly from the Yamaha ATV family. The quad is driven by a single-cylinder 686 cc engine. see. For the new 2019 season, the motor has been modified: it is now installed on new brackets, and the overall performance has increased. But to notice these subtle upgrades, you need to spend more time behind the wheel of your new ATV.

Reliable workhorse

Reliable, comfortable, compact, maneuverable and, what is also important, inexpensive universal ATV “Grizzly 250” feels great both in the field and on hilly terrain. Featuring a powerful 249cc 4-stroke engine with impressive torque, an automatic transmission and independent front and rear brakes, the Grizzly 250 not only gets the job done, but also competes for top spots in off-road racing.

Scope of application and technical characteristics

The Yamaha 700 will appeal to everyone - hunters, fishermen, summer residents, athletes. Unlike other models, the 2021 version is much more suitable for off-road driving. The manufacturers installed Maxxis Zilla tires on it, which are two inches higher than on other cars. This allows you to increase traction on mud surfaces, as well as climb mountain trails without much difficulty. At the same time, Maxxis Zilla are non-aggressive tires designed for mud, so driving on smooth roads is also comfortable. They are large, but quite light. The ATV has a load capacity of 140 kg and is capable of towing a trailer weighing up to 600 kg. All this allows us to call the Grizzly 700 model truly universal. Its technical characteristics:

  • number of engine strokes - 4.

ATVs "Grizzly": prices

An important factor in the popularity and demand for Yamaha ATVs is their cost. Along with technical superiority, the Japanese concern has always tried to keep prices for its products at a competitive level. Today, estimated prices range from 190 thousand rubles for the youngest representative of the Yamaha Grizzly 125 line and up to 490 thousand rubles for the Yamaha Grizzly 700 SE.

Reviews

Consumers who have experienced the full potential of Yamaha ATVs have noted many excellent points. First of all, these are the engines. The power units of the entire model range are distinguished by throttle response, power and reliable operation over a wide speed range. The power steering also deserves praise. The designers made sure that the steering was light and predictable. The unique Ultramatic transmission automatically maintains belt tension. Engine braking is light, comfortable and predictable, just let off the gas. The ergonomics of Yamaha's utility ATVs have always been a strong feature of these vehicles.
