Long-term test of CFMoto CF800. "Toy" for half a million
Trying on the image of the owner of a CFMoto all-terrain vehicle, we mercilessly tested this device for two months. And when the euphoria of owning a new “toy” subsided, not only its advantages, but also its disadvantages began to emerge
Natalia Umnova
Some time after purchasing a new “toy,” the euphoria of owning it subsides, and the owner begins to notice the shortcomings or simply features inherent in any car, motorcycle, ATV, mobile phone and anything else, regardless of class and price.
After running in, which is 400-600 km, the CFMOTO Z8 “kibitka” needs to do the first scheduled maintenance. Around this time, the oil light on the dashboard begins to flash, reminding you of the need for maintenance. During the test, we ourselves periodically checked the oil level in the engine. It must be said that getting to the dipstick in order to check the oil, much less add it, is not an easy task: the neck is located between the rear wheel and the right fender liner behind the pipelines, under the cap with a red mark - you will have to seriously twist to get to it and manage pour oil.
However, you need to check the oil level regularly: in 2014, the Z8 engine was slightly modernized, so units from the first batches may occasionally suffer from some previously unknown “sores”. And then how lucky you are: someone will come across a device that will travel thousands of kilometers without significant breakdowns, and someone will get an unsuccessful, “broken” copy.
You can’t just go and change the variator belt. To get to it, you need to remove both variator pulleys, and to do this, unscrew two large nuts, which, in turn, can only be done with the help of a powerful pneumatic impact wrench, because they are screwed tightly, and it is not a fact that even with a special tool it will be possible change the belt yourself in the field. Although we didn’t have any problems with it, despite the fact that we didn’t particularly regret the “side”. But here the whole question is in the load: it’s one thing to skid in a swamp or mud, another thing to drive along dry steppes, and a third thing to climb rocky slopes. Under different operating conditions, different problems with equipment will arise. It should be noted that the assembly of the all-terrain vehicle is performed at a very good level, the plastic is precisely adjusted, nothing in the cabin falls off due to shaking, which, by the way, is not so much thanks to the really successful suspension, which provides comfort for the driver and passenger, as well as excellent grip on the surface . There are also no comments about cross-country ability: the Z8 overcame all the obstacles that an unprepared ATV or “side” could theoretically overcome, and when it got stuck, the winch helped. Yes, there are difficulties with access to some nodes, but this is not so critical if you do not need to access them often. As for reliability, it is still better to closely monitor such equipment in order to detect the first symptoms of the “disease” before the device fails and you are subject to non-warranty repairs.
The front tires are different in size from the rear: when going on a trip, in addition to the repair kit and tubes (if the disc bends), take a couple of different tires in case of serious damage

800cc CFMOTO X8 Terralander
CELESTIAL INTRIGATOR The X8 Terralander is intriguing at first glance. Interesting option. Judge for yourself. Firstly, it is equipped with an 800 cc engine - and this is a serious, full-fledged device that can be modified for any operating conditions without regard to weight. Secondly, a similar two-seater device has a price limit of 350 thousand rubles. — a truly unique event on the market. The X8 provided for testing turned out to be not entirely stock, but the changes that dealers made to its design were minimal and really necessary - the quad was being prepared for competitions, and riders near Moscow do not regret the equipment in the excitement of sports. To begin with, we made a hidden installation of snorkels in the manner of ISS (this system is used in BRP) - a prudent step, taking into account the harsh conditions for the further operation of the equipment. The oil radiator moved behind the water radiator - and this is also a necessary step. Thus, the “obstacle” to blowing the large water radiator disappeared, and the oil radiator received additional, albeit very conditional, protection from mechanical damage.
Terralander's appearance is pleasing to the eye - muscular, wide, solid. The metal “cheekbones” on the front end are not decoration, but real safety arches to protect the standard optics. The headlights shine properly, no problems with turning on or adjusting the headlights were noticed during the test. The driver's seat is comfortable and spacious - it's comfortable to sit, and even more comfortable to stand (the driver's footrest is quite sufficient in both size and profile). The display, which flashes when you turn the key, is informative and simple: the level of fuel, technical fluids, transmission mode indicator - everything is in its place. Another turn of the key and the engine wakes up. The sound is pleasant, smooth and low - you immediately want to “open up” more and sharper. Well, the motor vibrations running through the plastic of the body encourage you and call you to heroic deeds.
UNSPARKLING FLOW The movement of the transmission knob is soft and precise. The X8 accelerates dynamically, without jerking or slipping. Several dozen attempts to pull the quad from the start onto two wheels failed - 63 Chinese “horses” with a total weight of 386 kg did not want to “sparkle” and “goat”. Well-mannered, probably. In fairness, I note: the driving dynamics of the X8 are excellent - acceleration up to 70–80 km/h is so uniform, as if you were driving along a runway, and not along a broken track.
Terralander turns confidently and safely. The suspension works great even on stock shock absorbers, let alone sports ones.
The front differential is forcibly locked, there is a tow bar and a winch with a synthetic cable. I couldn’t miss the “moments of happiness,” so I deliberately and maliciously climbed into the thickest puddles and swamps that I found in the forest. At first I had no luck - the Terralander drove out of any puddle calmly and drove into the next one just as calmly. It careened (sometimes very strongly), cut through slurry and other turbidity with its white sides, stirred muddy porridge under the wheels, froze for a moment and, cursing lowly with quadrocycle obscenities, pushed cubic meters of water in front of itself, taking me to land.
But human persistence knows no bounds, so the X8 was thoroughly sunk in a shallow swamp, and the winch could finally be tested in practice. Unwinding the cable, I planned to swing, lower and raise, tighten and loosen in order to rescue the submerged war horse from dirty captivity. However... it was all over very quickly. The quadric, hooked by a cable to a nearby birch tree, methodically and slowly freed itself. All I had to do was press the buttons and watch as hooky wheels appeared above the water.
The man and the ATV returned to the car wash tired, dirty, but happy - during the whole test day, the feeling of the reliability of the equipment and the associated personal safety did not let up for a minute. For many users of classic utilitarian ATVs, I’m sure this feeling is far from the last.
After the wash, when the X8’s white sides sparkled again, it was time to evaluate the distance traveled and inspect the quad for possible damage. I looked and found nothing. But suspicions have crept in that headlight glasses can quickly lose transparency during active or aggressive driving. And the filler neck is located in a very unusual way - right under the rear trunk. Without a funnel, refueling can be a hassle, and you'll probably learn some new acrobatic skills.
Otherwise, the CFMOTO X8 Terralander is a classic two-seater utility vehicle with a large margin of safety, impressive volume and good potential. And at the stated price, it will definitely become one of the best-selling models on the market. Will the forecast come true or not? We'll find out soon!
Price CFMoto 800MT
This week the new product will be shown at the Shanghai Auto Show, and we very much hope that the delivery dates for the 800MT outside of China will become known at that time. The CFMoto 800MT is expected to be available in two versions - on spoked wheels and on more road-ready alloy wheels. The price of the new product has also not yet been officially announced, but according to rumors in the Chinese press, the new CFMoto in China will cost somewhere between 50,000 and 70,000 yuan (590 - 830 thousand rubles), but it is unrealistic to calculate the price on the Russian market from this amount.
It is also unknown how the new product will be distributed. The fact is that CFMoto dealers in the regions are much more interested in ATVs than in top-end touring motorcycles costing a million, and the Austrian manufacturer can either prohibit or approve the sale of 800MT through its dealer network, and the KTM dealers themselves may be concerned about the neighborhood orange motorcycles with CFMoto in different ways.
We hope that the new product will go on general sale and we seriously look forward to the opportunity to test it!
CF800-X8 EFI – the new flagship of CFMOTO
At the end of February, the official distributor of CFMOTO equipment in Russia, AVM-Trade, introduced a new ATV CF800-X8 EFI (“Terralander 800”)
This was, perhaps, the most anticipated new product in the entire history of sales of all-terrain vehicles in our country. Its design, technical characteristics and possible price were discussed by the ATV community long before the first production samples appeared.
The ATV has a stylish and aggressive appearance. Sharp lines and intersecting edges make the appearance of the ATV bright and memorable. And yet, when you look at the new X8, you can’t help but feel like a very user-friendly machine, which is inherent in all ATVs of this brand. Later, when you start the engine and hit the road, this feeling only gets stronger. Separately, I would like to note the recognition in the new model of the signature CFMOTO features, which is an indicator of the maturity of the brand. Engine – two-cylinder, V-shaped, 800 cc. cm, with Delphi EFI electronic fuel injection system. With this motor, the ATV has become very “easy to climb” - on slopes of any steepness there is no lack of power. The engine maintains throttle response throughout the entire rev range and easily accelerates the car to a speed that is forcibly limited to 105 km/h. The presence of a centrifugal clutch in the design and perfectly selected characteristics of the variator allow you to start and accelerate very dynamically and confidently, but at the same time smoothly and evenly, without jerks, so characteristic of 800 cc engines from other manufacturers. This not only provides comfort, but also simplifies the control of the ATV in difficult rough terrain conditions, where any mistake can lead to leaving the track, and also provides the possibility of a “jewelry” dosage of torque, which is extremely important in swampy areas and when forcing areas with unstable soft ground.
The ATV received a new multifunctional instrument panel, which displays the speedometer, odometer and daily mileage, fuel level sensors, engine temperature and oil pressure, engine speed and on-board voltage. The monochrome panel looks strict, is easy to read and conveys all the necessary information. The selection of information display modes is carried out by the “SET” button located on the left under the LCD display. When you press this button in the lower central part of the screen, the readings change sequentially: odometer - daily mileage - tachometer - on-board network voltage.

The new ergonomic two-seater seat features a removable passenger section with an integrated backrest. You sit in the driver's seat like a glove. The bump of the passenger seat prevents the driver from sliding back during sharp climbs, and clearly divides the seat into two independent “person seats”, eliminating the feeling of some cramping inherent in most two-seater ATVs.
The fuel tank “moved” back, under the passenger seat and rear trunk. As a result of the changes, the weight distribution not only did not suffer, but, it seems, became even more accurate. Jumping on springboards only confirms this - when jumping, the ATV does not tend to tip over backwards and does not dive (unless, of course, you make unreasonable manipulations of the gas and brake). The fuel filler neck is hidden under a cap with the CFMOTO logo, located between the rear headlights.
The air filter housing was located under the lining of the false tank - this made it possible to raise the engine air intake to a considerable height, which is important for fording.
The new housing design also takes into account ease of access to all elements that require monitoring and maintenance. The cooling system expansion tank, battery, fuse and relay box are located under an easily removable cover. The relays are assembled in a separate box designed to protect them from water and dirt. Each element is signed - which simplifies the search and elimination of possible malfunctions. At the rear of the ATV there is a compartment for small items, equipped with a quick-release lid.
The CF800-X8 EFI is equipped as standard with 26” Ancla tires with developed lugs and alloy wheels. Disc size is 12". Perhaps, on wheels of a larger diameter, the ATV would look more impressive, however, the distributor considered that the “twelfths” would be more practical, for at least two reasons: for this standard, the choice of tires in our market is wider, and, moreover, In rough off-road conditions, it is preferable to use higher profile tires.
The ATV inherited from its predecessors a plug-in all-wheel drive system, controlled by electric drive and forced hard locking of the front differential. Depending on the driving conditions, you can select the optimal drive mode: rear, full, full with locked cross-axle differential). This familiar, reliable design provides high cross-country ability and ease of control. The modernization also affected the gearbox.

Gears shift easily and clearly. The brake system has also been improved. The four-chamber dual-circuit brake cylinder used in it provides fairly effective and precise braking. The main braking system is complemented by a highly effective EBS engine braking system, which reliably slows down the speed of the ATV in both transmission modes - direct and downshift. You can appreciate the performance of the EBS system on steep slopes, as well as during emergency braking.
The energy-efficient and reliable independent double A-arm suspension with anti-roll bar features specially selected springs and shock absorbers for superior energy efficiency and handling. Thanks to changes in the geometry of the steering mechanism, the ATV “steers” so easily that it completely eliminates the need to use a power booster. It handles as if it had power steering, with excellent feedback.
The new Terralander CF800-X8 EFI will undoubtedly be a success on the Russian market. Let's hope there will be stories of the CF800-X8 EFI taking on challenging and long-distance adventures in the foreseeable future.
Tourenduro CFMoto 800MT 2021
This motorcycle is the first significant result of CFMoto's collaboration with KTM. CFMoto has long been a contractor for the production of one- and two-cylinder engines for the Austrian brand, and this year they launched full-cycle production for the first time, i.e. launched entirely made-in-China versions of the 790 Duke and 790 Adventure. The upcoming CF1250 tourer is based on a special version of KTM's LC8 big V-twin, while the 800MT coming into production is based on the 799cc LC8c inline-twin, the same one found in the 790 Duke and Adventure.
As part of the CFMoto motorcycles, the engine produces 94 hp from the crankshaft and 77 Nm of thrust, it is installed in a distinctly KTM-esque steel tube frame, the motorcycle weighs 231 kg in the basic version, and 248 kg equipped with an aluminum luggage system.
Assistants CFMoto 800MT
CFMoto tried to equip their new product with the maximum of available technologies, including inclined ABS and traction control on the internationally recognized Bosch module, which is found in dozens of Japanese and European models. It is curious that the 800MT has a version produced at the Chinese factory Bosch.
Other technologies include the electronic gas required for this engine, as well as related functions such as cruise control and several riding modes. Plus there are heated grips and seats, as well as satellite navigation integrated into the 7-inch color dashboard, keyless entry and, unusually, automatic high beam headlights.
Chassis
In terms of mechanics, everything is also very relevant: suspension from KYB, brakes (four-piston radial calipers at the front) from J.Juan. Surprisingly, KTM models built at CFMoto facilities are equipped with WP suspension and Brembo brakes.
