Categories for driving a motorcycle in 2021
Motorcycles that are operated on the territory of the Russian Federation are divided into two types according to certain characteristics, which determines the category of rights to drive them:
- Vehicles with an engine capacity of up to 125 cubic centimeters, which are allowed to be driven by citizens over the age of 16 years (in this situation, only category A1 will be open). This category is also called “light motorcycles”.
- Vehicles with an engine capacity of more than 125 cubic centimeters, which includes ordinary motorcycles. In this case, when obtaining a driving license, category A will be opened, and persons are allowed to drive such a vehicle provided that they are already 18 years old.
Despite this restriction, training for a category A license can begin at the age of 16. However, qualifying exams can only be taken after reaching 18 years of age.
Let's teach you how to drive a motorcycle professionally
You need to learn how to control this vehicle with one hand - this skill of emergency driving will be useful when obtaining a license at the traffic police, when showing turn signals and braking signals on the roads. Learning to ride a motorcycle never ends, it can only be improved. Private lessons are always relevant. In the modern realities of the frantic pace of highways, it is necessary to acquire basic solid knowledge and skills to always remain in a safe environment and become the owner of a license. Motorcycle driving courses and further successful riding practice will help you become an experienced and safe biker. We offer private off-road riding lessons for beginners and experienced motorcyclists.
Procedure for obtaining rights
The procedure for obtaining a motorcycle driving license is practically no different from the similar procedure carried out to enable driving cars in category B, which is the most popular in our country at present.
To obtain rights, you will need to complete the following steps:
- Contacting one of the existing driving schools that operate in accordance with existing regulations and laws.
- Passing a medical commission, the results of which will give you access to training and subsequent driving of the vehicle. This procedure must be carried out before entering the institution, since the learning process involves passing the practical part, which consists of driving a motorcycle.
- Admission to school and completion of the entire training course provided for by traffic rules and internal procedures of the organization.
- Passing an internal exam, obtaining a school completion certificate.
- Submitting documents to the local traffic police department. As a rule, most driving schools independently organize the exam; therefore, the future driver will only need to appear for the exam.
- Registration of licenses and their receipt by a motorcyclist who has successfully passed all tests.

Recommendations
Reach a comfortable speed. Try to signal with your left hand in advance, so that by the time the maneuver begins, both hands are already on the steering wheel. Before maneuvering, disengage the clutch. When entering a parking space, steer with your feet, not the steering wheel. Just like on a snake. Before braking, move your body slightly to the right. This will allow you to stop using your right leg. Don't apply the front brake too hard.

Requirements for a driver to obtain a license, restrictions on medical indications
To be able to obtain a license to drive a motorcycle, you only need to reach the required age and not have medical contraindications, in the presence of which driving a vehicle is strictly prohibited. The medical opinion may concern a ban for a certain time until the contraindications are eliminated, or it may be one that makes driving impossible for life. To eliminate such problems, you will need to pass a commission before enrolling in a driving school.
The rules for passing a medical examination are based on the standards outlined in the Federal Law of 1995 “On Road Safety”. For each category of drivers, different rules may be provided that provide specific standards and indicators by which the possibility of admission to driving vehicles is assessed.
The procedure for passing the commission involves visiting the following doctors:
- ophthalmologist;
- ENT;
- surgeon;
- therapist;
- neurologist;
- gynecologist (for women).
As a result of passing the commission, a driving ban will be imposed if the following disorders or diseases are diagnosed:
- chronic hearing or vision impairment;
- cardiovascular diseases;
- developmental delay (mental);
- mental illnesses;
- alcoholism, drug addiction, substance abuse and other diagnoses included in the list of prohibited driving.
If a positive conclusion is issued, the validity period of such a certificate will be 10 years.
One of the indicators that can interfere with driving is the lack of necessary visual acuity. However, in such situations, a recommendation from an ophthalmologist may be issued to use glasses or contact lenses while driving. It is worth considering that if it is necessary to artificially increase visual acuity, driving without glasses can be equated to driving a vehicle without a license, for which the driver can pay a significant fine.
Required documents
In order to pass for category A, you must submit to the traffic police, and before that to the driving school, a set of documents provided for by law. It includes:
- Statement
- Passport or equivalent replacement
- Medical certificate with a note indicating that there is no prohibition to drive motor vehicles of category A
- Certificate of completion of the required training
- Receipts for payment of state fees
- 2 photographs 3*4, if photography is not taken when issuing rights.
When enrolling in preparatory courses, you may not be able to provide the entire required set, but it is better to stock up on everything you need - especially a medical certificate, officially called a medical report - in advance. This will allow you not to waste time and money if there are serious circumstances that prevent you from achieving the desired result. It is better, instead of the traffic police department, to contact a specialized doctor, get yourself in order, and then return to the deferred issue.
Attention! It is strictly not recommended to resolve the issue with a medical report through contractual means. The road is not forgiving of unnoticed details or failure to press the right lever in a timely manner. A purchased certificate can lead to loss of health, freedom and even life. No need to take risks!
How does learning happen?
One of the important stages that a future motorcycle driver will have to go through to obtain a license is training at a driving school. If previously, at the legislative level, independent training and obtaining a license after passing exams at the traffic police were allowed, at the moment the process of obtaining theoretical and practical knowledge in a driving school is mandatory.
For each institution, there is a certain procedure for obtaining permission to train and graduate specialists - if a driving school has not discovered a certain category, then it does not have the right to graduate drivers in it.
The full course of training will be 2.5 months. If the future motorcyclist already has a driver’s license to drive a car, then you can take an accelerated course, which will last only 1 month.
When undergoing training, a future motorcycle driver will undergo the following stages:
- Classes on the theoretical part, during which he will gain knowledge about all the provisions of traffic rules, existing offenses and penalties for them, as well as the rules of first aid.
- Practical part. During the training, the principle of driving and maneuvering a vehicle is mastered.
Tips for beginner motorcyclists
Before you enroll in the course, we will make some recommendations. The driver of a motorcycle transport must be appropriately equipped before the trip:
- helmet,
- motor turtle,
- knee pads,
- gloves,
- motorcycle pants,
- motorcycle boots.
Clothing should be appropriate for the season and not restrict movement.
It is worth remembering that a modern bike is one of the most dangerous types of transport, so you need to be alert and never lose vigilance on the roads. Private courses with an individual approach will help with this, taking into account your existing riding skills. If you are a beginner, choose courses “from scratch”, find out the price for a driving course and move on to a new one!
Cost of education
The cost of training at a driving school will depend on certain factors, such as the region of location and the prices of the educational institution itself. Typically, the cost of training ranges from 4 to 10 thousand rubles, but in some regions driving schools can set prices in the range of up to 20 thousand rubles.
When determining which school to study at, you should not immediately enroll in the institution that offers its services at the lowest price - such an advantage may hide disadvantages in the form of a low material and technical base, insufficient qualifications and experience of teachers.
Conditions for conducting a motorcycle driving test
Exercises to test initial skills are carried out on specialized racing tracks (closed areas). They must have high-quality asphalt pavement, appropriate lighting, and exam reception areas must be equipped with the necessary equipment. The full list of requirements for racing tracks (sites) is established by Appendix 1 to the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 1097.
The procedure is regulated by this resolution, as well as the Administrative Regulations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
- The exam can be conducted in two versions: one candidate performs all the exercises sequentially, or several examinees alternately perform one exercise, after which they proceed to the next.
- Each examinee must be equipped with a helmet and protective gloves.
- Each candidate is entitled to a two-minute practice ride on the route before the start of the test. Mistakes made during the training ride are not counted.
- The motorcycle must be installed in the starting area, the engine must be turned off, and the gearshift lever must be in neutral.
- Taking the driver's seat, starting to move, and performing exercises is done at the command of the examiner.
After completing each exercise, the inspector makes a note on the examination sheet about the correctness of the exercise, the presence of errors or failure to complete the task. To pass successfully, you need to score no more than 5 penalty points.
