Motorcycle Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide 2013 review

Description of the Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide 2013 motorcycle is in the queue for publication of the article. Announcement: Today, for almost every new motorcycle that comes into being, marketers strive to carve out their own niche. This one is a road sport, this one is a recreational enduro. But what class should we include a motorcycle that has a little bit of everything? A good bike should have a reliable engine, comfortable ergonomics and simple controls...

Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide is a motorcycle sold occasionally in Russia. Despite the fact that good models of motorcycles have a very respectable price, and the season for their use is relatively short, the motorcycle market is developing rapidly. And if you believe the words of dealers, then some models of recently released motorcycles are selling like hot cakes at the beginning of the season, and the models brought to Russia are clearly not enough to fully satisfy consumer demand.

A motorcycle has long ceased to be an alternative to a car, and the times when this equipment was bought only because there was not enough money for a full-fledged car are forgotten. Nowadays, two-wheelers can be called technological marvels in many cases, and their cost can be compared with that of prestigious cars.

Many people have started buying motorcycles for hobby purposes as riding or even collecting them has become a good pastime for many people. Many motorcycles, for example the Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide, whose technical characteristics make it possible to call the model a prestigious brand, are in demand among both beginners and experienced motorcyclists.

Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 1584 cc. see, appeared as a result of long work of inventors who sought to create a model that was not inferior in characteristics to other versions of the motorcycle. In some cases, these models are not only not inferior, but also ahead of other motorcycles, as they have minimal fuel consumption and other excellent parameters.

Motorcycles with an engine capacity of more than 400 kb. cm, which includes the Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide - this category of motorcycles simply cannot claim the title of “motorcycle for a beginner.” On the contrary, this is already a serious technique that requires certain control of motorcycle equipment with a smaller engine capacity. Yes, she attracts more attention, she is the most beautiful, fast, interesting and there is a huge selection of models. But as power increases, the weight of the motorcycle inevitably increases. In this class you are unlikely to find motorcycles lighter than 180 kg, unless they are the latest motorcycle models.

Harley-Davidson Dyna Low Rider Engine

In motion, the Harley Davidson Love Rider is powered by a 2-cylinder V-shaped engine, the volume of which is almost 1.7 liters, air-cooled. Engine vibrations are kept to a minimum thanks to rubber “pillows”, with the help of which the engine is attached to the motorcycle frame. The motorcycle engine has an almost even power cycle in all speed ranges.

Maximum torque at 3500 rpm, 126 N/m. The engine is 4-stroke, eight-valve, with electric. structure of sequential fuel injection. The maximum speed of the bike is a little over 200 km/h. The gearbox works just fine.

Also in the Harley-Davidson Dyna Low Rider motorcycle, the designers have improved the suspension - the shock absorbers at the rear now have a different design, they are soft and practical. The fork travel at the front is 130 millimeters – a good indicator. In conclusion, we can say that the bike’s suspension is designed simply beautifully.

The braking system of the Harley Davidson Love Rider is quite remarkable. The motorcycle has 2 30 cm floating disc brakes on the front wheel and a 29.2 cm disc on the rear wheel. In addition, the functional equipment includes ABS. The front brakes are 2 floating discs with four piston calipers, the rear brakes are 1 disc with two piston floating calipers.

What are the differences between Dyna Wide Glide and Softail?

Dyna Wide Glide and Softail are motorcycle models manufactured by Harley-Davidson. Both of these motorcycles fall into the motorcycle category. While they have this and more, there are a few things that separate the bikes in terms of their styling, mechanical features, and options.

Frame and Body

The first difference you may notice when comparing the Dyna Wide Glide and Softail is the Dyna's exposed rear shocks. The standard seat height on the Softail is 1 inch lower than the Wide Glide. The Softail is also longer, but only by a fraction of an inch. The Wide Glide has a 4-inch wheelbase. There is a significant difference in weight between the two bikes. The standard Softail weighs 695 pounds dry, while the Wide Glide weighs only 647. The distinctive stretched rear fender on the Softail contributes to its iconic look and is absent on the Wide Glide. The defining characteristics of the Wide Glide are its durable triple clamps and rake forks.

engine

The engine of both motorcycles is a 96 cubic inch V-twin engine. Both engines are air-cooled dual cam engines, but the Softail has a "B" version of this engine. This creates 1.7 pounds more torque.

exhaust

Each of these bikes has a different exhaust system. The Dyna Wide Glide features a “Tommy Gun” exhaust. This is a 2-1-2 exhaust system with two mufflers. The Softail also has dual mufflers but has a direct exhaust. This contributes to the difference in looks between the two bikes. The Dyna exhaust has curved lines, while the Softail pipes have sharper angles.

Paint

There are a variety of paint options available for Dyna Wide Glide and Softail motorcycles. For Dyna Wide Glide models starting with 2011 models, buyers can choose from Jet Black, Jet Black with Flame, Chrome Yellow with Flame, or Orange with Flame. Vivid Black is also an option on the Softail, but so are Cool Blue Pearl, Merlot Sunglo, Birch White/Vivid Black, Dark Candy Root Beer/Light Candy Root Beer, Psychedelic Purple/Vivid Black and Apple Green/Vivid Black.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

  • Equipment. It, of course, greatly depends on the configuration and on the generation, but this motorcycle has everything you need. And what is not needed, too.
  • Thoughtfulness down to the smallest detail. To the point that the lids of the cases, when opened, remain exactly in the position in which they are securely fixed in place and do not interfere with the owner.
  • Abundance of tuning. No matter how old your Harley Davidson Electra Glide is, two or thirty, you will always find not only original spare parts for it, but generally everything you want. There are more available tuning options for the Harley Davidson Electro Glide than for all Japanese motorcycles combined.
  • Huge power reserve. On modern injection models, it easily exceeds 400 kilometers on one tank.

Flaws

  • Dimensions. It was created for the highway, for highways, and not for city traffic jams. It is better to make your way between cars on it slowly and carefully.
  • Inch bolts, nuts and hexagons instead of the usual metric ones. If they are lost, finding a replacement will not be easy. In addition, for self-service and repair you will need an inch tool. However, this does not apply to modern European versions of the Harley Davidson Electra Glide, or almost does not apply - most of their bolts are metric.
  • Maintenance cost. In general, both tuning and spare parts for the Electra Glide cost moderate money, but repairing or servicing at an official dealer will be very expensive.
  • Huge weight. This parameter also depends on the specific modification, but any Harley Davidson Electric Glide weighs a lot, about 400 kg, give or take.

Test drive Harley-DavidsonFXDWG Dyna Wide Glide

Opinion: Vladislav Sofonov

(Height: 180 cm, weight: 75 kg)

My acquaintance with the Harley-Davidson Dyna Wide Glide began with... the sound of an approaching motorcycle. Even without seeing the bike itself, one could say that it has a solid engine and that the attention of others will be focused on it when parading around the city. How could it be otherwise? After all, the characteristic sound of the Harley Twin Cam, combined with the rich sound of the Tommy Gun exhaust system, helps it stand out from the crowd even before the troublemaker himself appears in sight.

And here he is, a black chopper with a high (but moderately) steering wheel and an engine swaying in the frame at idle speed - a “feature” of almost all H.-D models. with evolution series motors. For this, some are free to love Harley, while others are free to criticize. But both of them, having driven it, will never forget the special sensations that simply have nothing to compare with. Having briefly examined it before the start, I couldn’t find anything to complain about. Even the wiring harnesses that go to the steering controls are discreetly hidden...in the steering wheel itself! All that was left outside were the gas and clutch cables and the brake hose.

While the engine, rocking on silent blocks, warmed up, I had time to inspect the tidy. As befits the style canons, a tachometer is not provided here. The central place is reserved for the round speedometer dial, next to which other necessary indicators are located. At first glance, it may seem that the gas tank has two filler necks. Although one of them, the left one, is an imitation. The fuel level indicator is conveniently located in its “lid”. But it looks so natural that, approaching the gas station, I was still thinking about which neck I should pour gasoline into... The real tank cap is located on the right and opens without a key, simply unscrewing and saving the driver from having to once again climb into it jacket pocket.

For those who have not yet understood why the key is in their pocket, let me remind you: this, like many other Harley-Davidson motorcycles, does not have an ignition switch as such. There is only an ignition toggle switch located on the tank, which can be locked with the same key. Also included as standard is an immobilizer and alarm system, which prevent the motorcycle from starting if the owner has gone somewhere with the key. When you try to move the motorcycle, the anti-theft system squeaks obnoxiously and flashes the turn signal lamps, falling silent 30 seconds after the “carcass” is left alone. If the “owner” with the immobilizer key fob in his pocket approaches Daina closer than one and a half meters, the system itself disarms the security and, after turning the switch, allows you to start the engine. What's in motion? The motorcycle is outrageously linearly stable at 130 km/h – the maximum legal speed for the Kyiv-Borispol highway. The driver still feels quite comfortable in this “American”. The headwind is not so strong that your hands come off the steering wheel. And the back remains almost unloaded. It seems that you can move at this pace for a long time, but... “Boryspilka” ends very quickly, and with it the smooth asphalt.

Although the front suspension has good energy capacity and a travel of 121 mm (with a 21-inch front wheel this is more than enough for smooth handling of uneven surfaces), our potholes cannot be compared with the American ones, and therefore the rear suspension travel of 79 mm is 79 mm for Ukrainian drivers will obviously not be enough. And if there is some kind of hole on the way of the Wide Glide, it is better to slow down in a timely manner. It’s no longer possible to stand up on the footpegs due to their typical chopper arrangement, but it’s still possible to dodge potholes - the handling allows it.

However, despite a couple of breakdowns in the rear suspension that occurred when driving through moderately deep holes, I never received a harsh blow to the “fifth point”. After all, at the rear, in addition to the shock absorbers themselves, the impact energy is also absorbed by a thick tire and a soft driver's seat.

But with the passenger seat, not everything is so smooth: it is too tiny, and therefore there can be no talk of any comfort on it during long-term movement. So, to take a “girl” for a ride around the city, from a cafe to a nightclub... The Sissy bar (a metal arch behind the saddle) is simple to the point of impossibility and, apparently, is designed to partially compensate the passenger for the shortcomings of his seat, providing the opportunity to hold on to it.

The fact that we first rushed out of the city does not mean at all that this motorcycle is not intended for riding in big cities. Quite the opposite. In its “pure form,” Wide Glide is intended for exactly this. After all, for tourism lovers, there are many other models in the Harley-Davidson model range that are better “tailored” for this purpose.

Our “experimental model”, having a solid weight of three centners, steers simply excellent in the city. And even in terms of such an indicator as traffic jams, it is at its best. The only thing that disappointed me a little about the Wide Glide was the slight turnout in the steering wheel. Because of it, some U-turns on a typical suburban two-lane road had to be made in three stages. And pushing three hundred plus kilograms is not a very pleasant experience.

But a pleasant discovery was that when driving on stretches, the engine does not get very hot, and its heat does not fry the inner surface of the thighs, as one might expect. Vibrations are not annoying either – their level is quite moderate. The impression is that they are needed simply so that the driver does not forget that he is driving a chopper! But when driving on the highway in sixth gear, you should maintain a speed of at least 100 km/h. With less, unpleasant jerks occur in the transmission, even if you keep the gas steady.

At the “lower levels” the engine is very flexible. But, if you keep the speed above average, the acceleration occurs very quickly. In the city, the most used are the first three gears, since even in the second you can accelerate faster than 100 km/h. The characteristic “grunt” of the box is not at all annoying. On the contrary, you can always clearly hear whether you switched or not. And the work of the clutch evokes only positive emotions. The force on the handle is moderate, and the grip range is extended just enough to give you a confident start even on a steep climb.

As with many other choppers, you have to be careful when turning sharply with the Wide Glide - it doesn't like to lean too much, as the low-mounted footpegs scrape the asphalt even at moderate angles. While studying the model, I more than once came across mention of insufficient power of the front brake. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised that in our case it turned out to be quite adequate and capable of stopping it abruptly. The only pity is that the test bike is not equipped with ABS. Then you could ride it even more actively.

By the way, starting next year, Harley-Davidson has promised to install ABS as standard on all its motorcycles. And these measures are caused not only by increasingly stringent legal requirements, but also by the real need to increase the level of safety for drivers of two-wheeled vehicles. In some countries, even insurance for a motorcycle with ABS is cheaper, and therefore the demand for them is growing.

As strange as it may sound, the only thing I was missing throughout the entire test was the flames on the gas tank. This is an indispensable attribute of many choppers, and our Wide Glide in almost all illustrations on the Internet flaunts a “flaming” tank. The black glossy color, of course, also suits him. But, if you’re going to shell out such a considerable sum for this beauty, you want it to look more vibrant and individual.

Opinion: Valery Chuikov

(Height: 186 cm, weight: 125 kg)

Sports chopper is an unusual phrase, isn't it? Some might argue that it is not new - after all, so-called “power cruisers” have recently appeared on the market, and Harley-Davidson has a Sportster model. But cruisers are not choppers, and the Sportster is not a cruiser, and it doesn’t have the same engine. Now imagine that on the “older” one they changed the motor, increasing its volume by almost one and a half times and lengthening the base by almost 2 centimeters. Ergonomics are generally not bad: the seating position turned out to be very comfortable, despite the arms and legs stretched forward - largely thanks to the well-profiled seat. All controls are under the fingers and toes. But there is still one “jamb” - it is extremely inconvenient to twist the left foot in order to move to the side the side stand, hidden behind the huge rear protrusion of the gearbox. Harley’s “good old” 96 TwinCam is easily recognized by the familiar rumble that comes from its depths when you press the starter button, after which it begins to quietly rumble with its stock exhaust. The first gear is also engaged with a rich Harley “clack!” All sounds are certainly proprietary, and I would not be surprised if they are patented as part of the character of the “iron American motorcycle”

The combination of a very “torque” engine and a “stretched” gearbox (on the first I easily accelerated to 60, and on the third – right up to 130 km/h!) allows you to use only two gears in city traffic, and since the peak torque falls at only 3000 rpm, then up to 80% of the engine power is available almost from idle: if you turn the throttle sharply enough (even at a small angle), you can feel how this seemingly difficult chopper literally jumps forward. I'm not kidding - that's exactly how it is. Such sharpness can play a cruel joke in a dense traffic jam, especially with a less experienced rider. I don’t know whether this behavior of the model is connected with the consonance (for the Russian-speaking ear) of the words “wide” and “wild” in it, but the adjective “wild” comes to mind. An attempt to reduce this effect by increasing the free play of the throttle by rotating the thumb (which is located at the bottom of the handle, near the cables) did not yield anything, but on the contrary, only strengthened the “sudden start” effect. But, a little later, having gotten used to it, I even began to experience pleasure from such an instantaneous reaction of the engine (it should be noted that it was unusual for this category of motorcycles). And after driving a little and getting used to the behavior of the “Wild Dyna” in changing lanes, I was happy to maneuver in fast traffic flows, unscrewing the gas and easily moving through the “windows”. The brakes also give you confidence when driving dynamically. After the start of cooperation H.-D. With Brembo (although the company does not advertise this), you can forget about the “chopper - no brakes” stereotype in relation to this brand. High efficiency and the same information content, both front and rear, give the Dyna Wide Glide owner the confidence to stop in a timely manner, even if he exceeds city speed limits. But not everything is so rosy and every barrel of honey has its own spoon of honey! In the case of Daina, this role is played by rear shock absorbers with a stroke of less than 8 centimeters and... the lousy condition of the asphalt surface in the city of Kyiv. Two classic shock absorbers do their job normally, but only in two cases. The first is that you are driving quite slowly, and the larger the irregularities, the lower the speed should be. Optimally – from 20 km/h when driving over speed bumps and up to 80-90 when driving on “relatively flat asphalt”. And the second - when all the bumps and holes that fall under the rear wheel do not exceed a quarter of the shock absorber travel in size. Carelessness can be costly. Example: I lost support under my left leg and almost lost control of the motorcycle (along with the trajectory), hitting a small oblique transverse asphalt influx at a speed of about 110 km/h, which, if I were on an enduro, I might not even notice. At the same time, there is one trick that at the last moment allows you to partially save the situation if the unevenness is noticed in time: raise your butt at least a little above the saddle, sharply pulling yourself up on the handlebars - fortunately, it is very thick in diameter and strong. So, with the “wild thing” on Ukrainian roads, its owner should be careful, attentive and physically strong!

What's with the comfort of the Harley Davidson Dinah Love Rider?

The developers have modified the handlebars, seat and footpegs for a better ride for bikers of medium and small stature. Now it is possible to move the steering handles closer to the steering wheel by as much as six centimeters, and to move the saddle forward by 3 centimeters. Any problems, of course, cannot be avoided, but this has greatly improved the ergonomics. Using a similar method, the footrests themselves can be adjusted, so customers can find the best position.

But, regardless of the rider’s height, the knees are too high at the elbows, and the saddle is too low. When purchasing, you need to test the bike; not everyone will like its unusual fit, and for some even it will be uncomfortable.

This bike looks out at the track beyond its small fairing and is easily recognizable. For fast driving at a low landing, you need a fairing. The designers placed the canopy deeper into the windshield - this moment gave the bike an aggressive look. This motorcycle is quite powerful and easy to control. The motor is air cooled. The bike has Premium Ride suspension components at the front and rear, which provide better handling and high comfort.

Nice rack-mounted handlebars, an updated saddle and mid-mounted controls give the biker's riding position some aggressiveness. The braking structure is equipped with ABS. The “base” includes a Harley-Davidson cruise control system and alarm system, equipped at the enterprise. The motorcycle is quite easy to control, equipped with all the devices that should be in modern motorcycles.

The bike is light and mobile, superbly assembled. The Harley-Davidson Dyna Low Rider includes all the hallmark street custom features that define its segment. The basic equipment includes exceptional paintwork, giving the brand an original look.
