Lynx 440 is a Russian-made universal snowmobile. The car was created by specialists at the plant in Ufa. The developers had high hopes for this model, which was first introduced in 1991. This device was positioned as a first-class snowmobile, designed for driving on snowy plains, deep snowdrifts and rough terrain. As a result, this snowmobile has gained very high popularity in the post-Soviet space. The car remained relevant for another 18 long years. On its basis, various modifications with certain characteristics were produced. At the same time, the entire family of Lynx 440 snowmobiles was united by the high quality of workmanship characteristic of the products of the Ufa enterprise.
The history of the car began with the Lynx 113 snowmobile, built on the platform of the Arctic Cat foreign car. The car did not receive positive reviews, as there were problems with the reliability of the power plant. As a result, UMPO engineers seriously began working on bugs. A number of shortcomings were eliminated, and as a result of numerous upgrades, a high-tech snowmobile Lynx 440 was created. We must admit that this is one of the last snowmobiles from the Ufa plant. The machine is a replacement for the Lynx 500 snowmobile. The developers have successfully finalized the design and technical part. In particular, there was a new Mikuni carburetor system, an aerodynamic hood and a sharper gearbox. The track was also modified - it became wider, which significantly affected the cross-country ability. Already in the basic configuration, the car received the function of electric heated steering grips.
Factory testers tested the Lynx 440 snowmobile in different regions of the country. Of course, the primary task of the Ufa engineers was to adapt the car to the northern regions of Russia, with extremely low temperatures. The car was actively tested off-road, subjected to heavy loads, tested for endurance and maximum load capacity. All tests took place under temperature conditions close to the range of plus 5 – minus 40 degrees. As a result, the developers were convinced of the vehicle’s high off-road capabilities, as well as its adaptation to harsh climatic conditions. Moreover, the Lynx 440 snowmobile is very easy to operate, and even an unprepared driver can handle it. The equipment can be easily controlled at home and in the field. From this point of view, the device of the same name has proven itself well among fishermen, hunters and ordinary consumers - seekers of entertainment and adventure.
The Lynx 440 snowmobile left the production line in 2009, but still remains one of the most popular on the Russian market.

Price
Production of the Lynx 440 snowmobiles ended in 2009. Currently only supported versions of this model are available.
Price tags for equipment vary depending on the year of manufacture, condition and mileage:
- 1995-1997 – 95,000-110,000 rubles;
- 2001-2002 – 115,000-130,000 rubles;
- 2004-2005 – 145,000-160,000 rubles.
Engine
The car is equipped with a 432 M-01 carburetor gasoline engine. This unit has proven itself to be reliable and unpretentious. It has an in-line arrangement of cylinders, as well as forced air cooling with an axial fan. For reliable and uninterrupted operation of the electrical system and ignition mechanism, an integrated high-power generator is used.
With a working volume of 430 cubic meters, the engine develops 38 horsepower, and the maximum crankshaft speed is 6000 rpm. Thanks to the compact and lightweight two-cylinder layout, the developers managed to reduce the overall weight of the car, and thereby improve handling and behavior on the road. The engine is equipped with a manual start, but an electric starter can be installed as an option. The engine uses a diaphragm fuel pump and a Mikuni VM 34-622 carburetor power system. The lubrication system is mixed type (gasoline + oil). According to operational measurements, a snowmobile with such an engine consumes about 20 liters at a speed of 60 km/h. The fuel tank capacity is 28 liters, which is enough for continuous driving for 1.5 hours.
User manual
The attached manual contains detailed information on the design of this snowmobile track. The instructions include both a general diagram of the snowmobile and detailed diagrams of the main components, including electrical wiring. At the end, the owner can find a list of main faults and methods for eliminating them.
Run-in
Since this snowmobile was discontinued in 2009, it is now almost impossible to buy a new one without mileage. However, break-in recommendations may still be useful after a major overhaul of the engine or installation of a new one. The running-in period lasts for the first 300 km. In this case, the owner must comply with the following requirements:
- þ do not exceed the speed – maximum 45 km/h;
- þ ride without passengers, on flat areas;
- þ do not teach driving;
- þ change driving modes.
During long trips over long distances, you should make short stops from time to time. This will prevent the engine from overheating.
Maintenance
The first comprehensive maintenance is carried out immediately after break-in. In addition to checking the fasteners and chain tension, the engine oil in the gearbox should be completely replaced. TO-2 and TO-3 are carried out every 1000 and 2500 km. This corresponds to such temporary indicators as once a month and once a year.
In addition to the operating instructions, you can also find the released one on the Internet. This manual contains detailed drawings of each unit, indicating the markings of spare parts and consumables.
Reviews
- Alexander, Kazan. The Lynx 440 is a very mediocre snowmobile that I purchased solely due to lack of money. Otherwise, I would have immediately taken a foreign car without looking. The car was purchased from a friend and was used for several years. The first owner converted it into a sports car - this can be seen both in the design and in the handling. The car handles excellently in fields and in hard snow, and in forest conditions it is also a pleasure to drive. But the understeer associated with the heavy weight forces you to slow down a bit. At least there are no skids - directional stability is excellent. I repeat that the machine handles normally only on hard surfaces, but this snowmobile is not suitable for deep snowdrifts. Well, perhaps if you drive along a pre-prepared trench. In general, the device is suitable for short distances. And after two hours of driving, the engine begins to overheat. Often there were technical problems on the road, and there was no way around it - after all, I was dealing with a domestic snowmobile. Lynx 440 accelerates to 70 km/h, but consumes a lot of fuel.
- Anton, Irkutsk. The Lynx 440 snowmobile has been in my use for about 4 years. Was sold in 2010. I was the second owner. During the specified time of use, I realized that the machine is not as good as I imagined it to be before purchasing. At least, I really hoped that there would be much fewer problems with it than it turned out to be in practice. So, after four years of operation, I came to the conclusion that the Lynx 440 snowmobile is absolutely unsuitable for driving on loose and deep snow - to drive in such conditions, you must always take a shovel with you, without which you will not be able to drive. Among the breakdowns, I would like to mention the ignition system that regularly fails. I also didn’t like the mediocre traction characteristics, which are much worse than those of my friend’s Lynx 440 snowmobile. There were also problems with the gearbox, which suffered from oil leaks and shift clarity. After the first year of operation, I changed the fuel hoses, otherwise it would have been impossible to continue using the car. Despite the vaunted user reviews regarding maintainability, I objectively declare that the Lynx 440 snowmobile is difficult to repair in the field - unlike Buran, which we easily disassembled and reassembled in the forest.
- Dmitry, Tomsk. I have been using the Lynx 440 snowmobile for two years. A very problematic car. Of course, before purchasing, I reviewed all the reviews about this car, and came to the conclusion that a supported Lynx 440 is not so bad, despite serious complaints about reliability. I just didn't expect there to be so many breakdowns. Plus, I found an ad with a snowmobile in excellent condition, straight from the factory. I bought it together with a technician friend. We looked it over thoroughly and ended up buying it. And nothing foreshadowed trouble. About a week later the belt suddenly broke. Because of this, problems arose with the variator - as a result, we replaced the entire gearbox in the hope that everything would be fine later. But at the end of three months of use, the spring in the suspension burst. We bought it and replaced it with a new spring. The car does not drive well on loose snow, but on a flat road (for example, on a frozen lake) there are no problems, which is not surprising. In such conditions, you can generally accelerate to 100 km/h. The second winter season was not without problems either. The gearbox jammed right in the forest, and in the end we had to struggle to tow the car back home. Despite all the problems, I still use the snowmobile. Why? Yes, everything is very simple - because the funds do not allow us to buy a new one.
- Yaroslav, Lipetsk. The Lynx 440 snowmobile reminds me of the successful Buran - both in cross-country ability and handling. The machines are very similar in terms of maintainability. Lynx 440 is easy and cheap to repair, all spare parts are in stock. I got the device for 120 thousand rubles. I would like to note the spacious driver's seat, good traction characteristics and fast acceleration to a maximum of 70 km/h. But the build quality is mediocre. This does not affect performance. The car copes well with transporting two people, and also confidently pulls a 200-kilogram load. There is a spacious trunk under the seat where you can store things. The device is quite noisy, but economical.

The equipment was tested in various regions. The main tests took place in Yakutia, where the model performed very well. The improvements made in the Lynx 440 modification improved maneuverability and maneuverability.
A snowmobile is intended for moving people or transporting goods off-road at temperatures from +5 to -40 degrees. The car confidently drives on the crust at high speed. The design of the snowmobile is simple, so even an inexperienced driver can operate it. Maintenance and repair of equipment is often performed at home or in the field. Similar qualities and excellent cross-country ability of the Lynx 440 model made it very popular among fishermen, hunters and consumers who need to move in difficult conditions.
Production of the snowmobile officially ended in 2009. However, many owners continue to actively use the model today.

Purchasing Lynx snowmobiles for recreational purposes is not entirely profitable due to high fuel consumption - about 20 liters per 100 kilometers. Despite this, the machines are easy to operate and easy to repair, so you can fix most problems at home without contacting service centers.
Snowmobiles of the Lynx series were produced for a long time by the Ufa Engine Production Association (UMPO). The first copy of the Lynx snowmobile was presented in 1991. The model was positioned as a first-class all-terrain vehicle, designed for driving on snowy plains. The series quickly found fans in the Russian market.
Production of the Lynx series lasted 18 years. UMPO produced several modifications of snowmobiles with different characteristics. All of them were distinguished by the high quality characteristic of Ufa products. The first modification of the series was Lynx 113, made on the basis of the Arctic Cat model. The technology turned out to be not the most successful; problems regularly arose with the car’s engine. The modernization of the machine gave impetus to the emergence of new versions of snowmobiles from UMPO.
The flagship of the series was considered the Lynx 500 model. The Lynx 440 version became one of the latest products from the manufacturer and was a modernized version of the Lynx 500. The design of the equipment became more dynamic and modern. The snowmobile has a new Mikuni carburetor system, a modified hood, an improved gearbox and a wide track. In the basic version, the snowmobile received electrically heated steering grips.
How to modify a snowmobile
The Lynx engine has a fairly good power reserve and service life. If you install a unit of the UMPO 432am model, you can increase the number of horses to 50 - 55. If we talk about modifying the power plant, then you can try to increase the number of revolutions, but you will have to climb into the switch. In some cases, another valve is cut into the crankcase and a second carburetor is installed.
